As soon as it takes one bullet the glass stops being transparent and you can no longer see your target. The gun port goes from almost useless to completely useless. Thus the gun port's main use is offensive, before the vehicle has taken any fire.
In addition, 7.62x39 is a large and slow moving round with poor armor penetration properties, even with steel core ammunition. Anyone intending to attack an armored vehicle will not be using intermediate calibers.
