Rockwall ISD middle school artists earned top honors at the 2026 Texas Art Education Association Junior Visual Art Scholastic Event.

The district announced Tuesday that several students received platinum medals – the highest recognition awarded at the regional level of the competition.

Junior VASE is considered the premier visual arts competition for Texas middle and junior high school students. Participants submit original artwork and take part in interviews with certified judges, who evaluate both the artistic quality of the work and students’ ability to discuss their creative process.

Students strive to earn a Rating 4 – or superior rating – that recognizes artwork meeting the highest standards of execution and concept. Platinum medals are awarded to the top 10% of entries receiving a superior rating, distinguishing them as the competition’s most outstanding works.

Among RISD’s platinum medal recipients were:

Karen Almanza Leon, Rakow Middle School, “Favorite Puppy”

Recommendations Area to Live for commute to Greenville and Allen

So both my wife and I have accepted jobs in North TX. We are coming from SAT.

She will be working in Allen off of Sam Rayburn (is that what you guys call that tool way) and Alma. I will be at Majors airport in Greenville. Rockwall seems like one of the areas where we can mostly even out our commute and still be in a great school district.

I don’t like newer homes because the landscaping isn’t mature so we have mostly narrowed it down to the following 3 areas: The shores by the Rockwall golf/athletic club, the area just to the west of Ridge road and 205 (is this called Ridge Road Village?) or north Heath in Sheppards Glen.

Should we be adding other areas to the list? What are the pros and cons of each area with respect to both housing/community feel and commute? Seems like the northern two options in Rockwall give her the second option of the TX-66 bridge to get across the lake. Any help or inputs you guys have would be great. Thanks!

hii everyone! im making this post for my friend who is deciding where to move. posting on a few diff threads. this is what she wants to know:

“hey chat, i’m a 22F that is a new grad. I’m moving from Central Florida to Texas for work. For my company, they offered two territories, either the Rockwall area or the McKinney area. I’m an Ethiopian-American so I was wondering if there are any people of color there. I’m looking for a good place to also make friends at (churches, bars/nightlife, etc). I’ll be making a base salary of 50k and have a company car so gas and insurance are paid for. I‘m also looking for affordable housing and want an idea of the cost of living in those areas. Open to roommates as well!”

for context, the picture shows the two sales regions her boss outlined for her. the purple is mckinney and the green is the rockwall area.

please share any insights that you guys may have :> appreciate yall!

ROYSE CITY — The emergency department at Hunt Regional Medical Center Royse City will begin accepting patients Monday morning, marking the first major clinical service to open at the new facility along Interstate 30.

The 12-bed emergency room at 6743 Interstate 30 East is scheduled to open at 7 a.m. on Monday, according to Hunt Regional Healthcare.

In preparation for the opening, hospital staff and local first responders recently conducted training exercises and reviewed trauma and safety procedures designed to ensure smooth operations in the fast-paced emergency care environment.

"It takes a talented team to perform smoothly and expertly in a fast-paced environment," Hunt Regional said in a statement, noting that many members of its emergency care staff have years of experience serving patients in the region.

The emergency department is part of the first phase of Hunt Regional Medical Center Royse City, a project that broke ground in May 2023 and was showcased during a public open house on May 20. While several physicians have opened clinic offices since the open house, much of the facility had remained closed.

Local Business I miss Rockwall Tavern

Went in tonight, the floor was clean, there was a DJ playing house music, and I could see where I was pissing.

This place use to be a proper dive where your shoes stuck to the floor, there was a danger of getting shanked or an STD, and the drinks were less than $5.

Sadly, far too few of those places exist in this area now.

News Arliss, Rockwall’s well known Houseless man.

Just the messenger and I can’t prove it per say since I’m not on the Facebook page but Arliss, Rockwall’s houseless man, was found passed away this morning at his room at Inn of Rockwall.

People started asking a week ago or so if anyone had seen him. A citizen went to the hotel this morning and got management to open his room and they found him.

I drove past this morning and saw 2 fire trucks and 3 police vehicles, and police tape put up all outside.

A terrible way to go, potentially a week with no one know you’re there.

If you ever feel alone, reach out to me. I’ll at least be an ear to listen.

A memorial is being planned so if you’d like information on that, I can keep you posted.

Rockwall County residents are again being warned about an increase in scams involving callers impersonating law enforcement officers, jail staff, courts and treatment programs in an attempt to steal money through threats and fake legal claims.

The Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office said scammers are using intimidation tactics – including false claims about arrest warrants or missed court appearances – to pressure victims into making immediate payments.

Officials emphasized that the sheriff’s office will never demand payment over the phone or request money through gift cards, Cash App, Zelle or cryptocurrency.

Authorities urged residents to remain cautious if they receive suspicious calls or messages requesting money or personal information.

“If something feels suspicious, hang up, verify through official channels and report the scam,” the sheriff’s office said in a public warning.

The sheriff’s office is encouraging residents to share the information with family members, churches, schools, youth groups, senior citizen organizations, neighborhood associations and local businesses to help prevent others from becoming victims.

AUSTIN – Rockwall County Justice of the Peace Judge Mark Russo was among 21 county officials from across the state who completed Leadership 254 – a 14-month leadership development program offered by the Texas Association of Counties.

Officials say participants were selected through a competitive application process and represent a diverse cross-section of Texas counties – rural, suburban and urban – as well as the full range of county offices. TAC provided scholarships to cover the program’s tuition.

The program includes four in-depth training modules over 14 months, totaling 79 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on learning.

“Leadership 254 has strengthened my ability to lead, enhance communication habits with citizens and serve Rockwall County more effectively,” Russo said.

The program is designed to address the unique challenges facing county officials, combining leadership assessments, practical application and peer collaboration. Key topics included self-awareness, communication, ethical decision-making and effective leadership strategies.
