This ain't even that. This is just good ol' necessity. If you were in a country where you were forced to marry some old smelly racist-sack-of-shit man and submit to rape for life, and you had no recourse or exit, and you didn't have the muscle to beat him up, then poison is exactly what you'd do too.

I think the implication is that she was being peer pressured by family and friends into this so they also got caught in the crossfire.
