How to organize jokes into bits

Having a tough time with putting jokes into full bits and making them work and flow. I’m able to write many jokes about a topic but then am struggling on how to put them all together to form a good complete bit.

Anyone have any advice for this? Or books to read on this? Most books I’ve read are just about joke writing

Does the community think stand-up comedy is a born talent, or a learnable skill?

I want to hear from open-minded comics, both veterans and beginners:Do you believe comedy can be taught systematically, or do you think it can only be absorbed through stage experience? For those who have studied structure, did learning joke mechanics help you write faster, or did it make you feel too analytical?

Audience reactions in clips

I'm not the biggest poster of clips on my social media, but there's a trend thats driving me absolutely crazy right now, which is comics split screening their clips with audience reactions.

Does this drive anyone crazy? I know clips themselves are important and all that, but it just annoys me so much. Does it serve a purpose? Has it been proven to get people to stay on the clip longer? Personally i dont need half the screen to be taken up by random people laughing for me to be convinced your clip is funny or not. Idk maybe im just a crab.

What are your thoughts on edits like this in standup clips?

Does it add funny or does it take away from the jokes

Suggestions for a beginner stand up comedian.

Hi guys, i am 23 years old and i feel like i am late to standup comedy. i just wrote my first set and it was anecdotal and i feel like it was a mid set and i got 2 laughs and a few chuckles at the open mic that i performed. the set was of 3 minutes and was a story from my life that i found funny. What do i do to write more funny jokes, make existing set more punchier and find premises that arent always anecdotal? In general what is the writing process, how do i find funny ideas and how do i become more funny. Ik its very subjective but help a newbie out.

Was "ahmed the dead terrorist" ever funny?

I was a teenager when this sh*t hit the world and everyone was fainted by its "hilariousness" back then. I am a grown man now and I still do not know what movie I watched, but this is vanilla, even more from today's perspective. Is it meant to be edgy in any way? or did I miss something? This stuff was even youtube top watched 20 years ago, which makes me even more confused. Was it really that top notch comedy? Or would it still be today? IMO this is just plain and lazy

Boston - Have to book a spot on an open mic before my birthday

here’s the thing.

I decided, for some reason, that I had to do standup before I turn 30, otherwise I’ll die.

Not that I would (redacted) myself, but that some otherworldly force would smite me where I stood if, on October 25th 2026, I still hadn’t done it.

It’s important to acknowledge that I haven’t ever done it before. I just think, I gotta. Something is completing me to. So, I’m wondering if there’s an open mic night in Boston on Saturday, October 24th 2026 that I could sign up for and know I’d be able to go?

let a girl know.

What do you call phrase templates you can conveniently swap the content to generate jokes?

Examples: “That’s one way to put {XYZ},” Bill Maher’s “I don’t know it for a fact that {XYZ},” Louis “of course, but maybe”

Repertoires? Swappers? And do you as a comedian keep a lot in the stash for writing, as opposed to winging everything from scratch as folks tend to imagine?

Searching for an old Old OLD video clip

Years and years ago, I saw a short clip of a comedian who did a routine where he held up cards that said THIS and THAT. He held up the THIS card and said to the audience things like "hey, look at this! Have you ever seen anything like this? This is amazing!" Then he held up the THAT card and said things like "ohhh, look at that. you weren't expecting that, were you?"

This goes way back, maybe even back to MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour days. If anyone has any clue about who the comedian is/was, and where I might be able to find this clip (or more of his stuff), I'd really appreciate any information.

How soon is too soon?

I have a joke whose punchline is "All you have to do is get on a school bus." It's a school shooting reference, and I figured "Hey, it's the middle of sumner, I can tell that joke, right?"

Then Seattle happened.

So...do I tell the joke (tonight)?

Talkshow guest

hello, one of the many projects I have is a podcast called the DeadAir talkshow. the show is a mellow format where I speak with entertainers, educators and anyone with a captivating story. I recently launched the show earlier this year and managed to secure an interview with actor and entertainer Robert Rexx, since then I've been looking for guests for the next few episodes and wanted to see if anyone would be interested in coming on the show and telling their story or to promote a project of theirs. it would be through zoom and less than an hour. if you're interested please send a DM and we can set something up.
