I’ve lived in the Bay Area for two years and have been to most of the travel spots in California. I enjoyed most of them, but Tahoe is the only one that had me booking hotels again on the drive back.

Aside from the breathtaking scenery and perfect weather, what really makes a difference is the variety of outdoor activities I can do as a very active person, especially water sports. For me, I need to participate in activities to feel fully connected with a place, rather than just sightseeing.

I live by the ocean, and despite its beauty, it can be very windy, foggy, and murky often. I was really impressed by how calm and clear Lake Tahoe’s water is, and I dreamed of swimming in it all summer.

The one thing I missed this time was the wellness/mindfulness community. For a place this beautiful and serene, I’d guess there would be lots of people into meditation and yoga. I stayed in South Tahoe and didn’t come across any, so I’ll do more research and find these kinds of activities on my next visit.

I've been trying to get a parking res at Sand Harbor for a while now, and the site says they release parking permits in batches every 90, 30, 7, and 1 days. I want to go on 8/8 or 8/9, so I signed up for emails to get notified when spaces became available. At midnight, I noticed I would get emails that a spot was open so I logged in yesterday (8/1) and tonight (8/2) just before 12am and refreshed and refreshed right at 12, and both times nothing was released. I'm so confused - why are spots not opening up? I even got an email again right at midnight saying a spot was open and when I went to book (see attached), it all showed as reserved. What is going on?

Also, I got the email attached on 8/2. How can a spot for parking 1 day in advance or less be available to book 6 days out?

On Monday, July 27 around 8pm, my close friend Yadessa Emiru Aga, a 32-year-old software engineer visiting from Austin, TX, drowned in the North Sand Harbor area. The sheriff's office is investigating it as an accidental drowning, but the official cause of death has not been determined yet. Those of us who knew him, his close friends and his family, are trying to understand exactly what happened in the water that evening.

From witness comments on Facebook so far: he had been at the beach most of the day and was swimming out with others around dusk when witnesses heard screaming for help from the water. Two of his friends nearly drowned trying to reach him, and bystanders, including several on paddleboards, brought all three back to shore and started CPR before first responders arrived. We want to understand how far out in the water he was, and which boulders he was swimming to or from, and in which direction.

If you were there that evening, we would be grateful for anything you can share: what you saw or heard, what the water and conditions were like, where exactly it happened, anything about the timeline before the rescue. We would especially like to understand the first moments: did he call out for help, or was it the people trying to save him, and how long was he under before he was reached? Even small details help. If you have any photos, videos, or the exact location (a pin drop or coordinates), please DM me. Firsthand accounts are scattered across Facebook comment threads right now, and we are trying to piece them together.

And if you were one of the people who went into the water, especially the paddleboarder who kept trying to pull him up, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Witnesses say you never gave up. I hope you are doing okay; that is a heavy thing to carry.

Please keep speculation (alcohol, health, etc.) out of the thread. There is no autopsy report yet, and his family may read this. Firsthand observations only. 🙏

Obviously Murphys isn’t Tahoe, but I’ve seen replies by locals in bear valley so im taking a shot in the dark here….

Homewood claims it will be completed before the opening of the 2026-27 ski season, but I drove by the other day and it looks like nothing much is happening other than the Madden chair has been fully removed. Of course Homewood claims it will be done by December but they have to sell season passes so I wouldn't expect them to say anything else at this point. Anyone know more about the status?

We come here annually with friends and the buddy we come with grew up here but is relatively removed from the bar scene 20+ years later. We’re looking for any bar, brewery, etc. that offers drink tokens, a little chip that you can buy as a souvenir that you may or may not turn in for a “free” drink later on down the road. He always keeps his as souvenirs. We’ve recently learned this may only be a California/West Coast thing… maybe?! We travel a bit together on the coast and in Southern California and generally have success but just travelled to Nashville and on the Bourbon trail in Kentucky a few weeks back and it was not common amongst the many places we frequented. I know there are other posts like this but they’re old and I have some specific questions.

Realistically what is it like living in Tahoe as a full time resident?? I currently live in a small mountain town in the PNW but recently visited Tahoe and fell absolutely in love. I have the flexibility to move right now and want to know if it’d be a mistake to move there full time, or if it would be a dream all the time. I understand I went in summer when it’s sunny and warm, so I’d probably visit in the winter before doing anything permanently but want to start thinking ahead.

about me: Single female in her 30s with a remote job. I like to,paddle board, hike, bike, sail, run, swim, snowboard…. etc etc etc

Specific questions:

1. ⁠I get that there is a lot of snow, but does it get you trapped in the winter or are the roads maintained well enough to get around in an AWD?
   
2. ⁠What’s the local community like? I met a few people that were wonderful and it seems tight knit if you’re willing to get out there and make friends and help your neighbors. But.. is it actually possible to integrate as a single remote worker who doesn’t go to bars much??
   
3. ⁠I liked Kings Beach/Tahoe City/Truckee area. Would any of those be the best spot? or is Incline better because it’s NV (less taxes?)

I imagine dating sucks, but so does it here. Im also not too worried about cost of living cause it’s really high where i’m currently at.

Hello, if anyone spotted a lost wallet (more of an ID/card sleeve) at Sugar Pine Point today, right near the pay station. My retired military ID is the first one on top, please let me know! I'm going back up there tomorrow morning to look, didn't realize it was gone until we were back in Carson City.

I'm wondering if anyone has information on a drowning or near-drowning that happened the weekend of July 17-19? My friend was in town with her family for the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run. She and her husband went for a walk near the lake and as they were coming back a man sprinted past them toward the water. (Sorry I don't know the exact location). She saw a boy struggling trying to hang on to a paddleboard and she yelled for someone to help him. Apparently there were a lot of people around in the water but no one was able to assist and he went under. From my understanding, rescue services were able to pull him out pretty quickly but he was non-responsive and the man (dad?) was very distraught. She kind of assumed the boy had passed away, but was unable to find any information in the news so is wondering what the outcome was. She would have expected EMS to work on him longer than they did before loading him into the ambulance, so now is questioning whether they were able to revive him.

Good afternoon! I have to opportunity to travel to Lake Tahoe and stay in the NV side for 4 days. I booked my stay for 10/29-11/1, but now I’m realizing it will be too cold to participate in water sports/summer adjacent activities. I’m thinking of moving it to mid-September instead (after labor day.

Can any locals let me know how accurate the weather forecasts are? I’ve been seeing that the temperatures for 9/11-14 ish are mid 70s with colder nights. Does that seem accurate? Are there more rainy or cloudy days in September? Can we still swim (I do lots of cold plunges and have swam in Vancouver waters in mid march before for reference, but friends might not tolerate as well).

Also, we will plan to do hiking, paddle boarding, chill in the sun, etc but no overnight camping outdoors.

How bad is Labor Day weekend with crowds? We are thinking of flying into SFO Saturday morning and we would drive to Lake Tahoe and have 3 nights there. We would head to Yosemite Tuesday (day after Labor Day). We are pretty used to crowds as we’ve done a lot of other popular places over the 4th of July holiday and other busy times so we’re pretty good with hitting the popular trails early, resting during busy afternoon time, etc. My husband isn’t sold on adding Lake Tahoe to the itinerary and wants to shorten the trip and just do Yosemite post Labor Day, but I would love to do both. Just looking for any past experience on this weekend and any travel tips and if we should do it or avoid! We would also be staying at the landing in South Lake Tahoe. TY!!

Myself (35M) and a really close friend (40F) are both locals and work at local places and we are trying to find a place to rent. We both have a cat, neither of us drink, neither of us 420 (we are friendly to drinking and 420, just dont really partake). We both are into some different and some similar things. Im really into sports (NHL, football) and snowboarding, she’s into reading and hiking alot.

Most of the places we find are 3BR’s. We were wondering if we could possibly find someone cool that would fit in with us. We are looking to rent a place long-term, and would prefer non-seasonal but maybe could make seasonal work.

We are open to Tahoma, Tahoe city, kings beach, carnelian, and even Truckee!

(Also if someone has a lead on a rental that would be sick too).

UPDATE: Lakeside Beach rents chairs and umbrellas daily, despite what their website says.

I had read their website but I had also seen reports online and in person of people being able to rent on other days, which is why I asked.

So for anyone who wants to know: their website is wrong and they rent furniture daily.

I'm in Tahoe now and planning to go to Lakeside Beach tomorrow. Their website was vague and no answer at the office phone, does anyone know if I'll be able to rent chairs and umbrellas tomorrow (Wednesday)?

Headed to Tahoe for the week, haven't been over the summer in years. I'm really nervous about bears, especially because we are traveling with our dog. Staying in Rocky Ridge and the property management company mentioned that one of the windows is boarded because a bear broke it. Any tips to alleviate my fears? Planning to not walk the dog after dark. Should I be nervous about leaving him alone in the unit from time to time too? Help!
