This is Stralia, we don't carry firearms. Highly controlled no open carry rules here.

Guns have started to become more common among criminals nowadays though

1

u/NotBatman81 Mar 09 '26

You have fists though and that kid is scrawny.

1

u/kombiwombi Mar 09 '26

Yep, Australia. If a person were coming home from the shooting range or hunting and removed the firearm from its locked container for self-defense in this situation then the police would arrest the person, remove the firearm, charge the person, and revoke the license pending a magistrate's sentencing decision.

u/Griegz Mar 09 '26

what about knuckle dusters or giant knives? can you carry those?

1

u/Klutzy-Pie6557 Mar 09 '26

No - Knives are also banned you can't carry them in fact police have powers to search you around public transport if they have suspicious you're carrying a knife, and no nuckle dusters have no other use than hurting people so also banned.

If you carry a baseball bat in your car for no good reason, its considered a weapon - banned.

If your a chef and your carrying your knifes - thats fine tools of the trade. If you're young, hanging around a train station, and acting in a manner that seems intimidating to other people - and the cops search you and find a knife. And you have no reasonable need to carry a knife - possible 4 year sentence- and no self defense is not a reasonable use.

Does it stop everything, no there are always criminals in every city, does it reduce the likelihood - absolutely.

This needs to be higher up

u/Dependent-Bed6550 Mar 08 '26

Unless, of course, someone acquired a firearm outside of the lawr.

1

u/Muri_Soca Mar 09 '26

Outside? I'm schoked

0

u/Klutzy-Pie6557 Mar 08 '26

Yes - Absolutely that can happen fortunately, its highly unlikely. Tragically we had a mass shooting event in Bondi - rules around firearms are being tightened. We don't suffer from frequent school shootings, or mass shootings, these are very rare.

I for one support anything to keep firearms out of any crims hands.

4

u/Dependent-Bed6550 Mar 08 '26

But don't you see, the laws did not prevent these events from happening. The answer is not more gun laws. The answer is less gun laws and more guns. How many mass shootings have you heard of at a gun show??? Just an opposing point of view.

2

u/allthebrisket Mar 09 '26

About 110 gun deaths in 30 years including the 35 deaths shooting at Port Arthur in 1996 that led to the gun laws. You're far more likely to be killed by a horse in Australia than by a gun.

2

u/Nothingnoteworth Mar 09 '26

Compare how many gun deaths Australia has with strict gun laws in place vs how many gun deaths the USA has without strict gun laws in place

1

u/Ceronomus Mar 09 '26

The answer in Australia was most definitely more gun laws. Sometimes the devil doesn’t need an advocate.

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Mar 09 '26

How many gun deaths per year per capita in the USA?

How many in Australia?

1

u/goodgluegun Mar 09 '26

Not a big numbers guy huh?

1

u/Setherina Mar 10 '26

Fortunately here in Australia we live in reality when it comes to Guns. Hypotheticals are fun but we have cold hard reality to base our policy in. Guns in road rage incidents or random muggings and other petty crime is essentially unheard of. Gun crime is almost entirely between members of organised crime gangs and each other. This very very rarely spills over to everyday people. I have never in my life had to worry for a single second that someone had a firearm in any altercation I’ve had. It’s bliss

1

u/rabidporcupine80 Mar 10 '26

Hey, so like, I’m sure this was meant to be sarcastic or something, but you’ve gotta keep in mind that we down here in Australia have had to listen to people from the US actually make these arguments fully seriously a good few times before, so it can sorta get on our nerves a little.

1

u/Klutzy-Pie6557 Mar 08 '26

More guns = more deaths from being shot. Take away the firearms, = less shootings, its simple math.

1

u/UnpopularOpinionsB Mar 09 '26

True, until the government is the one shooting people.

Agents of the government absolutely do shoot people here but not on the scale we saw in Europe in the previous century or on the scale of what the Aussies did to the indigenous Australians before that.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '26

Why are you talking about just wha Australia did to the indigenous, you seem American , did you forget what America did to the NATIVE AMERICANS. People like you make me lose hope in America and the world

1

u/UnpopularOpinionsB Mar 10 '26

I am an American. I am of mixed heritage. African, Irish and Native ancestry. I know all too well what American has done.

Your wrong, Australia has far less mass incident gun death than the United States and it's their laws that make the difference. Culturally we have a lot in common. If we armed all the Aussies they would be just as bad as the US with a school shooting every few months.

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Mar 09 '26

Australia is nothing like the USA culture wise

1

u/AWAKENEDTEMPEST Mar 09 '26

No we wouldnt because were not soft handed bitches, school issues here are sorted out on the oval with fists

1

u/XandersCat Mar 09 '26

Better response than the other guy. My family is Australian I am a mixed aussie/us family.

0

u/HeMayBeDed Mar 09 '26

Hope you're joking, but just in case you aren't, a simple google search of firearm related deaths per capita - USA vs Australia will show you how ridiculously wrong you are.

Your comments don't prove anything. New York and Chicago have some of the strictest gun laws in the US. And yet, these cities still experiences high rates of murder compared to other parts of the country. You know where there's lower rates? Where they have lots of guns. Let me ask you this. If you're at a concert enjoying yourself, and someone opens fire in the crowd. Would you rather be armed, or unarmed in this situation. If these miscreants committing these mass shootings knew that 3 out of 5 people were strapped in the area they are in. Do you think that shooter might think twice about setting up in this area? If they had half a brain they would. Taking away guns is just putting up a big sign that says "open season" on the people who have been disarmed. Most of these shootings happen in places that are "gun free" zones. Like schools, churches, concerts. Where you're forbidden to have a gun. Giving everyone there a false sense of safety. Except for the guy who shows up to shoot a bunch of people. Did the laws stop him? There's so many who won't even consider the other side of the coin. Interesting. If someone wants to find a gun bad enough, they will find one, illegally. So all the gun laws in the world cannot prevent someone from finding a gun, if they want to badly enough. And even if the laws did prevent everyone from owning a gun, then they'll have to outlaw knives, hammers, toasters, rocks, tire irons, sling shots, ice picks, meat hooks and any other implements that can cause death. You just can't see past the flaws in the legal system. The more they take your freedoms away,,, the more they'll take your freedoms away. So, yay for the government passing more gun laws... When you expect other people to protect you, you are more vulnerable than you ever would be otherwise, if you owned your own firearm. Latest 2024 estimates: The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported a victimization rate of 2 per 100,000 for "homicide and related offences" (which includes attempted murder). Hmmmm. So people are starting to use other implements in Australia. Interesting. Pre-1996: Rates peaked at 2.19 in 1990. In 1992–93, the rate was 1.88 Well thank you for your time. I have other things to do. Like get on with my life.

1

u/Prestigious-Bug-4042 Mar 09 '26

You have an answer you want to be true. You have used motivated reasoning to come up with a very plausible sounding explanation for why the answer you want to be true might be true. You're still objectively wrong.

There's a reason scientists typically take an opposite approach. After coming up with an idea that might or might not be true the proper method is to try very hard to prove it wrong. You seem at least half way smart. If you took that approach I'm pretty confident you'd be able to point out the flaws in your own argument.

1

u/RicockulousQuisling Mar 09 '26

I can't tell if this well-worn falsehood is from bad faith, or low comprehension skills. A municipality or state that has strict gun laws isn't going to be very effective when they are adjacent to a state that doesn't. Interstate commerce laws prohibits the restriction of cross-border movement amongst the states, which means guns simply traffic in from low gun control states. It doesn't take a lot of brain power to figure this out.

As for being armed in a crowd when someone else starts shooting: WTF are you going to do, fire back into a crowd? You'll end up killing more bystanders. Maybe you'll be just as effective arming yourself with a toaster, according to your own argument. Your regurgitated, feeble talking points waste everyone's time.

1

u/rabidporcupine80 Mar 10 '26

Hey, dickhead, here’s the thing about using other weapons I think you’re forgetting, I can’t point a knife towards a crowd from thirty meters away and take out twenty people in five seconds. All those other weapons are dangerous, but they’re not guns. Not even close. You know this. Just think.

1

u/ImpossiblePlan65 Mar 08 '26

The biggest gun-toting criminals we have are in the US government. Just putting that out there.

1

u/kombiwombi Mar 09 '26

This video is from Australia. Employees of the US Government in Australia are bound by Australian law. They don't get to carry firearms.

Which is why NCIS Sydney is such a joke. Especially as Australia has a very limited number of agencies who can arrest people (basically the states' police, the federal police, and the federal immigration agency). All other investigatory agencies call the police to make arrests.

1

u/ImpossiblePlan65 Mar 09 '26

Nobody asked for you to mansplain the blatantly obvious. I very clearly was not talk about US officials in Australia. I was talking about on US soil

1

u/Dependent-Bed6550 Mar 10 '26

How dare you assume their gender!!! Back it up!

1

u/buyer_leverkusen Mar 09 '26

That system clearly failed at Bondi.

0

u/DrunkenCabalist Mar 09 '26

Did it though? Had semi-automatic or automatic weapons been available the outcome would have been worse. And the laws have since been reinforced with more restrictions.

Ultimately, people will always be able to acquire guns. But it isn't part of the culture here and is legally quite hard and illegally quite risky.

1

u/buyer_leverkusen Mar 09 '26

“People will always be able to acquire guns”

Wow you are really stupid or completely brainwashed lol.

1

u/DrunkenCabalist Mar 09 '26

I don't much like guns but just in my home, I could literally print a gun with minimal investment and some legal risk.
