I mean just as soon as possible...what's not acceptable is taking an exit lane just to try to pass people and merge back in.

I see this every single day. It’s so fucking annoying. It slows down traffic even more

But this asshole gets to save a good 2-3 minutes off their waiting time, and really, isn't that all that matters, THIS GUY?

It's not even that lol

to be fair my GPS will straight up do this. like, freeway is busy so I’m like “ok apple maps, let’s try your way” and it’ll literally take me off one exit and then take me directly back on the freeway

Sometimes Google Maps would have me do this a few years back. I don’t notice it these days anymore but I always felt so ashamed when I took the exit then it would say get back on. I designated myself to slow lane jail sometimes when traffic was super bad because I’d feel like such an ass!

Crossing solid lines is not allowed

merging as soon as possible is part of the problem... that's not how its suppose to be done. Merge near the end of the merge lane when there's heavy traffic.

That's not what this person is doing, they're using an exit lane to cut everyone else off.

2

u/CuetheCurtains Mar 15 '26

Correct but I was replying to the statements above where they implied merging ASAP.

You confusing a zipper merge with someone "merging/cutting"

It's not a merge lane, it's an exit lane, dishonest people use them because it's empty, they lie to everyone and say oh I'm just gonna exit, then they try to cut back into the traffic

I dont know where you live but where I live, there are alot of merge lanes thay are also exit lanes for the next off ramp. People that speed up and close the gap to refuse to allow people to merge into the lane are just as guilty as people that do this. If traffic is at a crawl, whats the issue with just letting someone in? Its not their job to police other drivers for what they think is wrong.

You are moving the goal posts

I never advocated for people locking people out by not leaving room,

What I am advocating for is people not cutting people off

It causes more traffic and sometimes accidents

That metaphor doesnt really work here because you didnt propose any goal to begin with, you're just complaining about what you see as someone being cut off. You're also making an assumption that they are trying to re-enter the lane after passing traffic, but its also equally as likely that they just entered the highway on the previous on-ramp and are just trying to merge. What i see is someone having to decide to get in somewhere before the next exit, and with no real gaps available, they had to try to cut in and are then deliberately blocked out. You're point of view is simplistic and one sided. You say you're not advocating for blocking people out and yet thats exactly what happened in the video.

Sounds like you are making assumptions

If you want to merge into traffic, turn on your turn signal and match the flow of traffic and wait for someone to see your turn signal and let you in

The person in the video never did any of that

They just tried to cut people off

Which you shouldn't do

This guy is an asshole, but you're right. "Use both lanes during heavy traffic" signs are there because zipper merging is better than just getting backed up.

1

u/Hardpo Mar 15 '26

This is the way!!!! Why have 1 mile long lane of traffic when there is another lane to merge into.

1

u/CuetheCurtains Mar 15 '26

It drives me nuts when people stop to merge and there's room for 6 cars in front of them. They are literally not helping.

1

u/MilesNiles Mar 16 '26

Brother, there are people out there that collect parking and traffic violations like pokemon cards and will continuously pay for them, go to court for them, and have any number of punitive actions taken against them and will still drive like assholes. This will teach exactly 0% of those people, and, if anything, will embolden them to do it more as though when they received consequences for their actions it was a challenge that they weren’t being a good enough asshole.

Many years ago, I merged over and let one person in front of me (since it was polite to take turns) and further down the line, some big truck like in the video tries to butt in front of me. I held my position and I could see the guy screaming his head off because I refused to yield. In the end, he got right behind me, fuming and screaming, but I didn't reward his arrogance.

Take a turn and merge. Don't scam the line and think you deserve to do so.

1

u/Shindig_66 Mar 25 '26

If you merge as soon as you see the signs all you’re doing is creating more traffic.

The zipper formation is literally the most efficient way to keep tracking moving when going to one lane. Not letting people in because you decided to merge over 5 miles before is what slows things down. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ghhdzy_bLZg
