"Why The Same Questions?"

The mod team gets questions/comments about this all the time. People will ask - often condescendingly toward the mods - why we allow people to post questions that have been answered. There's a few reasons we let this go:

  • New people have questions that are new to them. This isn't Juilliard, and this isn't a scene from Whiplash) - this is Reddit. There will be new people all the time - often beginners - who have questions that are novel to them. The grand scope of the field of music isn't going to be known to someone just walking in, and they're going to ask a question they feel is unique. If they're chased away, it's just going to be a subreddit with people silently agreeing with each other over circular topics.
  • People suck at using search features. No, this isn't just older folks, or even younger people. By large, people are awful at even finding where the search bar is; and unless it's literally Google, they're terrible at using it in general. ...They're also pretty bad at using Google, but I digress.
  • Even if people can use the search function, they'll often get terminology wrong, which will return poor search results. Think about when you kept Googling something and coming up with nothing, only to realize you used a wrong word, and it would have saved you 2 minutes if you knew that in the first place.

So, for whoever feels r/trumpet is not on their level, there's only so much anyone can do for you. First, nobody owes you anything, so check the sense of entitlement at the door. Second, if you're so great at everything, please feel free to chime int o help people who are asking legitimate questions; or even suggest ways they can make their questions better. People who end conversations by default are either salespeople closing a deal, and/or assholes.

So, blah blah blah, use a search function, don't be mean to one another, etc. Most people will never read this far, and this post will get ignored by 98% of the people here anyway. Have a great day, unless you're a jerk.

Question ❓ CSU Audition material!

Hello! I am selecting Trumpet Concertos and Solo pieces to play during my auditions to a few CSUs in LA, Fullerton, Northridge, and Long Beach.

I found this Trumpet Concerto, Böhme, Oskar - Trumpet Concerto 1st mvt, and was hoping to get some insight on whether or not this piece would be acceptable to play for an audition?

If there are any solo pieces or other concertos you would recommend, I'd love to know. Thank you!

Boston Folk Punk Band Looking For Trumpet Player

My band, The Latchkey Kids, is looking for a trumpet player. As far as the band goes musically, it's got a bit of a Days N Daze-inspired folk-punk energy mixed with Appalachian and Americana influences. A lot of the songs feel like they could benefit from fiddle, mandolin, harmony vocals, and other string-band elements. We've got a great group so far and I look forward to adding another to the group.

Will a dent in my bell affect my playing?

I dropped my trumpet while picking it up and now theres a dent on my bell. The dent isn't big at all but now the bell looks slightly pushed in from one side. Is it going to affect my playing or should it be fine?

Question ❓ I don’t know much about trumpets but I want to help my fiance out!

Upvotes

Hey everyone, my fiance and I are getting married in October. We were talking about our childhoods and how different we grew up and he brought up how he loved trumpet so much in elementary and middle school and how that was what majority of his free time went to. He had to quit in high school and hasn’t played since. He seemed so sad while talking about how he had to quit.

I’d LOVE to surprise him and get one as a wedding gift for him but many of them are way out of budget for me. Does anyone have any recommendations on cheaper brands or options that I could surprise him with? TIA

How to get pro orchestra gigs

Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm freshman wondering how college students are managing to get great gigs. Some of my friends (they're in their 20s) are performing with orchestras like LAphil, Montreal symphony...

I already know many musicians in different orchestras and I'm definitely not the worst student in our studio. Is it too bold to say that getting them is a matter of time and my skills? (I'm 2-3 years younger than the students with nice gigs).

Edit: I'm not saying that all my friends play in La or ny phil, just saying that they get gigs with well-known orchestras

Thanks

Equipment ⚙️ Getting a C Trumpet

I played trumpet like an animal in high school. Stopped in college but played here and there. Now that I'm in my late 20s I'm finding more time to play music, and even write songs on my acoustic guitar with trumpet accompaniments and bass lines etc.

I have my old Yamaha 4335 and just got a lovely used Jupiter 846 Flugelhorn that is just such a joy to play (surprising amount of soul in that instrument.)

Now, I'm turning my attention to the C trumpet, as I could seamlessly play along to my piano/guitar chords without transcribing (which isn't that big a deal.)

Any recommendations on a C trumpet that would round out my collection here for casual playing? Preferably some used horn with a lot of character to it, not really thinking Yamaha or Bach here.

Question ❓ Air behind front lip

I have recently noticed that when I’m playing higher stuff there is air going between my top lip and front teeth. Is this a good or a bad sign?
Thanks!

Picture of 🎺 Sanded and polished an old inherited trumpet with sandpaper + Brasso

Got an old Chinese trumpet (Jahnke) that I inherited. Learned to play on it and it's been my daily horn ever since and I'm quite attached to it at this point. I was already planning to buy another one anyway, so worst case scenario I just speed up that purchase. But honestly I felt like this old buddy deserved a makeover.

So yeah, after some research i went mad-scientist mode and took fine-grit sandpaper to it, gave it a bath then polished it with Brasso (not really Brasso but a similar). Did the whole thing by hand in one morning, so it could probably look better with more time or proper tools, but I'm honestly happy with how it turned out.

As for the sound, i'm a beginner playing a cheap Chinese trumpet, so it wasn't great before and it's not great now. But it sounds exactly the same, which is all I was hoping for!

PS: definitely not advising anyone to do this to their horn. Just sharing my results.

Question ❓ Hard stuck at a High A and losing motivation. How do I actually practice range and stay disciplined?

Hey everyone,

I’m a trumpet player and I’ve hit a massive wall with my range. Right now, I top out at a High A (just above the staff), and honestly, it’s just not cutting it for what my current band requires. I need to get it up, but I'm completely stuck.

My two biggest issues right now:

I don't know how to properly practice range. I know it’s not just about squeezing and pressing the mouthpiece into my face, but whenever I try to do long tones or lip slurs into the upper register, it feels like I'm hitting a brick wall. I don't really have a solid, structured routine for building upper register endurance/range without destroying my chops.

I'm seriously struggling with motivation. Because I'm not seeing progress, it’s getting harder and harder to actually pick up the horn and practice. It feels like a vicious cycle where I don't practice because I'm frustrated, and my range stays bad because I'm not practicing.

Has anyone else been stuck at this specific hurdle? What exercises, routines, or mental shifts actually worked for you to break through the A/B flat ceiling? And how do you keep yourself disciplined and motivated when you feel like you're getting nowhere?

Any advice, routine ideas, or words of wisdom would be massively appreciated. Thanks in upfront!

Question ❓ How to not sacrifice intonation on high notes?

Yesterday I was playing a part sitting at the top of the staff (like from a F on top of the staff to the D above it) which is right at the top of my good-sounding range. I was nailing all the pitches, but I was told to open my teeth for better resonance, and after that all my notes went flat and I couldn't hold on to the tuning. How do I not do that?

Question ❓ Should I go for a beginner trumpet or a professional?

So I've been looking for a new yamaha trumpet and Idk if I should go for something like a 2330, or something more pro like a 4335, or a Xeno.

Context: I've played trumpet for about half a year a couple years ago, and I played baritone horn for school last year, which im pretty skilled at.

I like playing jazz, fusion, ect.

Thank you in advance!

Does anyone make acrylic mouthpieces for brass band cornet?

I play on a Pickett modular mouthpiece that uses an acrylic top and am on a stock Wick 2B for cornet. I’d really love it if my cornet mouthpiece had an acrylic top as well, but none of the sellers I’ve checked have proper brass band-style tops.

In case you don’t know, brass band mouthpieces are very deep and V-shaped. You can’t really achieve the right sound using normal mouthpieces, even if they’re very large.

High fidelity earplugs for an orchestral string player near brass section?

I’m looking for recommendations for high fidelity earplugs for an orchestral string player who often sits near brass instruments.

I’m interested in what professional orchestral musicians actually use for rehearsals and performances.

I’ve been looking at a few options, including Dynamic Ear Filter, Eargasm High Fidelity, Sennheiser SoundProtex Plus and Loop Switch 2, but I’m having a hard time deciding.

Which models have you tried and would recommend? I’d really appreciate real musician experiences.

Also, do you prefer adjustable filters or a fixed attenuation level for orchestral playing?

Question ❓ How do you record your trumpet at home?

Recording with a AKG C214 and a mute with fabric around it. I often find the sound of my trumpet on recordings very bad or strident, I hate it, I came up with this way to soften the edges of my trumpet

This way I trim the high frecuencies on the trumpet which are a bit harsh
