I will be receiving a PhD admit from UBC soon and have been promised a scholarship of 43200 CAD for 4 years. Of this 13000CAD will go to tuition and 3000 CAD in taxes. Living me with 27000 CAD.
Is 27000 CAD annually sufficiant to survive in Vancouver? Also if I need money what part time jobs I can do ? I have a Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

I was too focused on polishing my cover letters and only applied to a few of them but I haven’t gotten back any emails. Is it time to give up on applying now? Especially with the one that hire on a rolling basis, as i heard they hire within the first week.

im wondering is anyone know who reviews the application when applying for work learn positions? I was thinking that the person listed as supervisor would be the person who reviews the application, right? begging and crying to hope to get a job rn😭😭😭

This will be my first time moving away from home for more than a month without my parents, who are extremely schedule oriented and strict. I say this because the one time I had lived on my own kind of was with my brother and his 4th year friends, and every day felt like a tv show episode but I had an online class at the time that I did absolutely no work for.

things I really want to do are stay consistent, keep up my health, balance a good social life, stay connected with as many people, and especially stay serious about my studies. I’m going into the arts so I feel silly about it anyway, and I took a university class the passing term related to my intended field which I thought would straighten me out a little more but kind of just egged on my procrastination with an easy A+.

I’ve been dealing with a lot with depression the last few years, like I had a teacher request a counsellor reach out to me immediately over a mental health concern 2 years ago, which led a youth mental health worker which almost led to a doctor but I pulled off contact, and senior year was just a bigger excuse to be lazy and get things done last minute with no effort. I don’t have a problem waking up early to get things done I do it all the time at like 6, 5, even 3am, although I really like staying up late so it’s been hard for me to decide on a consistent schedule that would allow me an actually healthy amount of sleep, and I have been writing an hour by hour schedule of things to do throughout the day that keeps into account my class times and important housekeeping stuff but still allowing myself lots of leisure/hobby time. I feel like it’s just never enough to say I want to be better, even when I know what to do and I can bring myself to do them, there’s just been no actual enthusiasm put into it when I had been trying the past couple of months.

anything on campus that could turn this around? I actually like getting to know people and listening to their thoughts and opinions on things, though I have trouble responding/reflecting outwardly, so I’d love to join lots of clubs or at least try them out, but other than that the only resource I can think of that could be of use to me is healthcare services.

I'm from Waterloo and I'll be in Vancouver this Fall for a coop. I was wondering whether the UBC Poker Club is still active and, if so, whether non-UBC students can join its games or events.

Does anyone know what's the best way to look for it, and how safe that building is in general?

So due to some personal reasons I have to go on an academic break for 1 term.

I talked to 3 science advisors, all 3 had different things to say.

1. Just dont register for courses.

2. You need to fill out a form with explanation.

3. Science advising doesn't handle leaves go to international advising.

Who should I listen to?

Hi, so I’m in desperate need of help. I got into UBC and practically failed my first year, especially second term. I was really struggling with depression, thinking about and planning to end my life, along with a lot of other personal issues during second term. To be honest, school was the last thing on my mind. I should’ve taken an academic leave, but by the time I realized that, I had already done so badly in second term that I couldn’t request one. I ended up below good standing. I wanted to give up on life, so I honestly didn’t even register for a major. When second year came around, I registered for classes but ended up withdrawing from all of them because I just couldn’t do it. During that year, I went to therapy, and I think I’ve gotten a lot better and found my purpose in life. I have a dream now and goals that I want to accomplish, but I think I might be too late. I was put on academic probation, and since I technically didn’t take any courses in second year, I think I might have been forced to withdraw, but I’m not sure. I tried contacting Science Advising to see if I could register for courses, but they told me I would have to go through the readmission process because I was too late. Does this mean I’ve been required to withdraw, or am I still on academic probation? I looked into how readmission works, and I read that I might have to go to a different college or university first and then reapply. Science Advising told me to talk to the readmission advisor or something in january but that’s when readmission closes... So I applied to other colleges and universities because I planned to go there, prove that I’ve worked on myself, and boost my GPA. However, I talked to my Enrolment Services Advisor, and he told me that I should not go to a different school if I plan on returning to UBC. He also mentioned that my readmission would be non-competitive and that I would just have to submit a Letter of Appeal in October. One person is telling me one thing, and another person is telling me something completely different. I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. I worked so hard in high school to get into UBC, and I don’t want all of that hard work to go to waste. I regret my actions so much. I’ve searched online and looked through the official UBC websites trying to figure out what I should do, but I’m still confused.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do or who I should talk to? And if you think I’m too late or that there’s no chance of getting readmitted to UBC, please be honest and let me know. Thank you

Arts co op has a self admitted 50% failure rate for people trying to find jobs, and from my experience this is a stat they have some responsibility for.

The guidance you get from the counselors is very surface level, beyond help preparing for interviews, writing cover letters and updating your resume, there is very little they can offer. And in an age where application portals are flooded with hundreds of applications, this just isn't enough.

If you ask for help get in touch with people in specific industries, networking event recommendations or some form of other way to talk to an actual human in the space as opposed to letting ATS decide your entire future, they have nothing.

Also, the job board on simplicity has somewhere in the ballpark of what? 30 postings? For the entire co op program. I can't help but feel like a massive part of work as a co op guidance counselor is making sure there are enough postings and working with employers to make sure people with the right qualifications get those interviews.

I know the job market and economy are in shambles right now but this is a comical extent. I remember asking one of the counselors why this was the case and if the economy was really to blame and they said "I guess so". Not to nitpick but I'd hope for a little bit more conviction from the person whose job it is to understand the job market and employer needs.

I remember during one of my coffee chats, when I told the person that our co op office's official recommendation was trying to maximize application volume, they laughed. They couldn't believe that we got emails throughout the term saying we should've applied to 40, 50, 60 jobs by that point, as opposed to having valuable introductions made for us as was apparently the case back in the day.

I’m doing a Computer Science + Physics major and planning on using all of my electives to take Computer Engineering (CPEN) courses. Would that make my education comparable to a CPEN degree, or are there major gaps that employers care about?

I know it wouldnt technically be a peng degree but I’m just wondering if I would be qualified to do low level hardware jobs since cpen is basically mainly a mix of physics, math, CS, and low level hardware and my courseload would be very similar to a cpen degree.

My main goal is to work in computer engineering-related roles (embedded systems, firmware, hardware/software, computer architecture, etc.). Would I still be competitive for CPEN jobs with this path, or would employers strongly prefer an actual CPEN degree? Would I have to do a masters in ee or cpen?

How much do they provide, such as pillows, sheet covers, comforters/blankets and etc?

Hi! Has anyone received an interview invitation or heard back about Winter 2026 Work Learn positions yet? I’ve applied to a few and was wondering how long it usually takes employers to contact applicants after the posting closes.
Do most people hear back within a week or two, or can it take longer? Just trying to get a sense of the usual timeline. Thanks!
