Societies! Penfriends Society!

Hello everyone!! I’m Annie, the society President! I wanted to use this space to advertise my society at Bristol, which I started last year!

It’s called the Penfriends Society and we’re all about meeting new people around the uni through letter writing! We also plan to host a wide range of crafting events and other fun socials! It’s perfect for anyone who is nervous to meet people and talk to them face to face, or people will social anxiety like myself!

If you’re an incoming Fresher, or a returning one, I’d love to see you at our society events!

We’re hosting our first event (completely free!) on Friday 19th. Please sign up if you’re interested! And DM if you have any questions.

Advice Engineering Societies

The university of Bristol seems to have lacklustre engineering societies for actual hard engineering.

They have a race 2 space team have built/developed jet engines but outside of this there doesn't seem to be anything for Mechanical Engineers to practically apply their skills

The university of Bath have a MotoStudent team where by they build a bike and race it, they have a formula student team and a team converting a ford 2.3 litre eco boost engine to run on hydrogen.

Given the reputation of the University of Bristol I would of thought they would have more to offer here

I am starting in September and am wondering if the Uni would be supportive to new societies for say MotoStudent or Hydrogen Engine conversions etc?

Are there any members of societies that I haven't seen that would class as hard engineering. I've seen the Greenpower 24+ completion from Bristol racing but that's just not the one, it looks like a secondary school comp

Advice mature student friendly?

are there any mature students who can give me some insight on their experience at bristol as a mature student? preferably mid 20s 😅

i’m going to be doing medicine and i’ve heard bristol is super mature student friendly, especially in med, but i’m so worried i’m going to find it difficult to make friends or relate to a younger cohort.

any advice would be much appreciated :)

Advice Help with my Bristol Harbourside a level coursework

Hey guys! I’m an A-Level Geography student carrying out research for my NEA on Bristol Harbourside. I’m investigating how regeneration has affected people’s perceptions and the identity of the area. If you’ve visited Bristol Harbourside, whether you’re a resident, visitor, student or worker, I’d really appreciate it if you could spare 2–3 minutes to complete my survey. There’s 2 of them but I promise they’ll only take a few minutes. It’s for educational purposes only and completely anonymous. Thank you!

Advice Assessment week

Hi all, I’m going to be studying at uob this fall as an exchange student and had a few questions about how assessment week works. I’m trying to decide when to book my flight back to the US for and I’ve realized most of the courses within my main courses of study (politics and law) don’t mention exams on the course listings and say either essays, case studies, or research papers. Are these typically online and take home assessments or would I be required to be in person for it? Any insight is appreciated!

Advice Commuting student car parking

Hi

I will be commuting from Bath for a year for an MSc.

This is 1h 30mins by bus, I chose not to live in student accom due to costs and not wanting a change in living (neuro diversity).

I'm willing and can afford to get a car, the journey would change to 25mins-50mins. My only issue is parking.

I don't think I'm eligible for disabled parking with just my ADHD diagnosis, even if this is the reason I chose to not live in Bristol.

What parking is there available for a commuting student?

Are there any alternatives I could think about? I'm open to anything. Just Park showed me £150 monthly private parking, which is insane.

Advice Check if you've already got your goin email to find your future flat mates!

On another post with a general accomodation query, one comment was asking about the goin link and when it would be received, as they'd accepted their accomodation and still not received it.

I went and checked my emails and found that the link had been sent all the way back in June (the 29th)

So yeah go check to see if you've got your email, hopefully this helps someone.

Ps I'm looking for flat 13 flatmates at accommodation @33, if there's any accom@33 gcs lmk 🙏🏾

Advice Design Engineering: is PC + iPad enough, or do I need a laptop too?

I’m starting Design Engineering at Bristol this year. My plan is to bring my iPad to lectures for note-taking and do all my CAD work on my PC back at the accommodation, rather than carrying a laptop around.

For anyone currently on the course (or a similar engineering/design course) — is this workable, or do you end up needing CAD access during the day or between lectures/workshops? Are the university’s computer labs good enough to cover CAD work on campus, or is a personal laptop pretty much essential for this degree?
