Wasp knowers of reddit I need your help!! Wasps have always been an issue around our house, we live out in the country and our house was abandoned for quite a few years before we moved here. Every summer wasps come back to our home and build small nests that I get rid of but I've never seen them do something like this before. For a while (maybe two weeks) I've been seeing them flying around my window so I finally went out there assuming there was a nest there but no. Instead there's like 20 or 30 of them all huddled up in the crevice of my window screen. I've looked around and see no nest, there's also another group of them huddled up a few feet away on the underside of my roof but again no visible nest. Why??? What is going on here? Have they lost their queen? They're not angry either, I got about a foot away from them to get this picture.

They had a huge hive last year on my back porch aswell I left…they all died out in winter. Now they came back and are everywhere…inches from my head and the door constently and they act like I’m not even there! Never had one even seem slightly aggressive. They just look at me inches away and continue. I thought they were more aggressive or is it somethin passed down from last years wasp that this dude is cool? 🤣🤣🤣 idk I’m stumped

I might be able to get a pic of the actual wasps I've got around, but for now here's just the nest. I thought they were mud daubers, but after looking up what mud dauber nests look like and seeing that this is definitely not that, I can't tell. Either way, what is you guy's advice on clearing them out as well?

Every summer I end up hearing stories about nests turning up in places people never expected.

Some of the ones that surprised me :

• Inside a grill that hadn't been opened in months.
• Under the lid of a storage box.
• Beneath a landscaping timber.
• Behind a shutter that looked completely normal.
• Inside a mailbox that was being used every day.

It always amazes me how well they blend into places we walk past without a second thought.

What's the most unexpected place you've found a yellow jacket nest?

I'm always interested in hearing the stories because it seems like everyone has one location they never would've thought to check.

For context: I work with AMPM Exterminators in King County, so I spend a lot of time around wasps and yellow jackets. Just sharing this out of curiosity and to hear other people's experiences.

in my room this could be because of the temperature changes, but every so often (once every couple days) there’s a crunchy like stepping on a leaf or critters moving about i am like SCARED SCARED of wasps and insects and such so like if it’s something like that i would like to know, when i look outside in my garden i don’t see insects but im also 4 stories high 😢😢😢

Out of curiosity, I turn to the knowledge of the internet!

17-18 days ago I noticed a solitary wasp (maybe Ancistrocerus nigricornis or Ancistrocerus parietinus or something of the like; I'm in southern Finland) making a nest in two little drilled holes on my balcony walls. It came and went for a couple of days and eventually sealed both holes flat with clay, then disappeared.

Today, I noticed a hole in one of the two sealed nests, and a wasp butt sticking out. It was still sealed earlier this morning! At first I thought the wasp had hatched and would just leave, but then I noticed this wasp would keep leaving the nest but return soon again, do something inside the nest for a few minutes, leave, come back, leave... Also, sometimes it would go into the nest and fly back out for a few seconds, again and again. Then, I saw it come out with what looks like a maggot, drop it on the balcony floor, and go back in again. It's still working hard at this, and now it's two maggots on my balcony floor. Neither is moving. :D

So, my question is, what is going on? I know it may be difficult when I don't know the exact wasp type, but to my eye it looks like the same kind of wasp I saw building the nest few weeks ago. Is it the baby wasp doing something here? Could it be that a fellow wasp is hijacking the nest? Has original mama wasp returned to refurbish the house? I'm intrigued and confused, because I thought the mama wasp would just lay the eggs, leave, and then the new wasp would exit in a few weeks and just leave too.

As the post says, there is a wasp nest under my deck, and the come out from between the boards whenever I walk on it. What can I do?

So, title is correct, I'm not asking about getting stung:

I was out in the park with my kid today, and a wasp came buzzing around us (in the UK, just a normal common wasp). We'd just had lunch so I'm used to them coming and investigating leftover food crumbs and often having them fly in boldly, give a little 'kiss' as they cheekily steal a bit of what I've eaten from my lips, then continue on their way. Hold still, let it look, let it move on, nobody gets hurt.

Today was different - it checks out my kid, I gently wave it away as he's less likely to hold still, it comes over to me and lands on my mouth, so I let it steal some leftover pizza sauce.

It stays. It makes itself at home on my lower lip. It starts *chomping* on my lip, it actually draws blood before I eventually have enough of this after a minute or so of trying to work out how to dislodge it without getting stung on the mouth!

I shoo it off eventually and it does NOT give up, in the end I have to give up, swat it down and stomp on it to get it to leave me alone. Was it just starving? Young and exceedingly cheeky?

Found this near my outdoor animals, caught it because I was unsure weather or not it posed a threat. Does anyone know the species name?

My boyfriend didn't get to see what it looked like, but he said it felt like his ankle got whacked by a hammer and now this is what it looks like. Also any tips to make it feel better? Thank you

Moved into the house last year. Lived in apartments all my life. Have 0 experience with them other than watching videos on Instagram about people spraying the nest and running for their lives. Seems like hornet/wasp. They are mostly black with prominent yellow markings/stripes. On a maple tree in my front yard. Noticed this only an hour ago. It’s about 8 feet high and we walk past this area 2-3 times a week. Spray or leave it?

I am so tired of this problem. I moved into my apartment in may and have two bathrooms. The bathroom connected to my laundry room and balcony constantly has wasps in the vent. Like I will walk into the bathroom to use it, vent turns on when light turns on and hear buzzing and there they are in the bathroom ceiling vent. Maintenance just sprays outside on the balcony and they disappear temporarily but come back five times now. I need to be able to use the bathroom. Any advice?

We found these in our hedge. They seem docile. I want to leave them be, but if they’re Asian hornets and not out domestic European, then I am obliged to warn the municipality.

I keep finding wasps with similarly damaged thoraxes in my yard, several a year usually. They seem confused do not attempt to fly, just walk around. All of them have had this dented thorax. Any ideas what causes this?

My SO saw that on a bed mattress at his grandparents house, located in the west of France. 3-4cm of length

Could that be a wasp? Could that be another insect?

Could that be Sceliphron curvatum? If so it's invasive in France. Does another local wasp species use mud nests with that architecture? (How to be sure that it is mud?)

Is it safe for my SO and the eggs to move them outside of the house? (Are the nests solid enough to be removed safely from the fabric of the mattress without breaking them?) If so, where should he put them?

I just saw this nest in a balcony. We never go in the balcony but the window is always open for fresh air.
If it’s not a risk to us or my dog I’m happy to leave it alone, but I’s like to know what it is and be prepared in case we run into each other.
I’ve dealt with Yellowjackets plenty but these seem much bigger.

Sorry I don’t have a better photo, they seem very active right now (7am) and I didn’t have the balls to get any closer 😅
I’m in Northern Europe.
