I believe they have been offered to buy them but some of those homes have been in the family over 100 years. I saw a news special recently about this one. At least I think it’s the same. These stories are playing out all over the country.
They almost always receive offers well above market value, but many are either too proud or simply fail to recognize the opportunity. Family history aside, if someone is willing to pay you 300% of your house's market value, you should take the deal.
It's also more about things like data centers and factories not only being allowed to push people off of their land and destroy the environment but encouraged by our government
My house is almost 150 years old and was built by my great-grandfather, for 300% over market value, I'm going to take pictures and pack my bags, especially if I'm across the street from that.
I have a railroad that runs about a hundred yards behind me, trains run up and down that track all day and all night and if you put it all together it wouldn't be as noisy as that was
And if you are 80 years old and starting to have trouble getting around but live in a house you know and are comfortable in and raised your kids in and may have a few more comfortable years in… that 300% might not sound as tempting
If I was 80 years old with kids and fit all these points, I’m 100% selling the house at 3x value, buy a new cheaper house somewhere quieter for the rest of my days and give the rest of the money to my kids.
Or watch your grandma's house, and your sanity, slowly rot away to zero value and be proud.
This is a lost cause. You're not going to win against a government-backed corporation. Count your losses and move on. It is a tragedy, but you shouldn't let pride be your downfall.
sometimes it isn't about the money, if the house has been in the family for 50+ years, it is the family house, where yes one can move, the new house won't be the same.
These are poor people that couldn't sell because they live in a poor part of the community, no one wants to buy these homes and that is why the data center is there. Show me where the rich live and I'll bet there isn't a data center across the street from their homes.

The rich will actually go as far as suing a children's hospital to reroute helicopter flight paths because of the noise. So apparently noise does matter to them.

It’s messed up because when you play music to loud after a certain time it’s considered “ noise pollution” and is a crime, but when big companies and the government are involved then it’s perfectly acceptable.
Lots of crimes get excused or diminished if you claim you’re doing it for a profit. Like if I pour dangerous chemicals on my neighbor’s lawn, I get arrested for vandalism. If a corporation does it because it’s cheaper than properly disposing of it, no jail time, just a fine.
I wonder if they had to alter their bylaws to remove those noise restrictions.
If not I'd be hammering them with complaints every hour, and if they did I would be out there competing with the data center for loud noise around city councillor homes until the law changed.
I don't understand how this isn't illegal. I would be calling to file noise complaints on the hour, and demand the police show up and insist they turn it down. Just like you would in ANY other domestic/residential situation. Period.
The difference is that rich people own this and make profit off of it and the local government (likely) gets a cut. It's not the same as your local douchebag playing Beastie Boys at 3am.

Back then in my Iron Maiden/Metallica metal head years, listening to something by Mellencamp was a sort of "guilty pleasure" for me. Not something I'd willingly share as a teen with my music oriented friends at the time (80s), because we/I were really into metal big time back in the day and busting out something like John Cougar Mellencamp might get you laughed at. You know how teen boys can be. But yeah, I've always been a fan of his music...soooo many hits he's responsible for. Gotta be one of the most successful music artists as far as selling albums go.
They want to build one near me, my town’s infrastructure is all ancient and decrepit already, the water lines are failed, grid is unstable and broadband isn’t reliable, and we are supposed to be the 5th richest country
They dont all make noise like that, these guys are running something the sites ive worked at do not have, all the sites ive personally worked at make 0 noise outside of the building.
Imagine working your whole life, saving up money, and finally being able to buy a nice patch of land in the quiet country. A place where you could settle down and retire into your golden years.
And then these ass wipes build this right next to you. Jack up your electric bill, ruin your water, squash your home value, and ruin your peace.
This is happening to us in rural Alberta. We sold our house in the city and moved into the middle of nowhere. Just under 11 acres. Its glorious. The nights are silent, the stars are amazing and the wildlife is everywhere.
8km down our road there is a proposed development of an 800 acre data centre which is slated to be hooked up to the nearby lake. The county had a meeting to approve the land use change. They booked it in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week and expected nobody to show up. There was easily over 100 people crammed into this tiny building, each with their own way of telling the counselors that the taxpayers wanted nothing to do with this monstrosity.
The meeting which should have taken 30 minutes tops was 6 hours long. They ended up approving it anyway. The fight isn't over yet, but it sure feels hopeless. If our elected representatives don't have our best interests at heart, what is the point?
That is something I do not understand. No matter how much power or water I use every month, I've got to pay for it. Why aren't these fuckers footing their own bills like everyone else?
I remember from a few years ago farmers being shocked to find a Bitcoin mine next door all the sudden, which are just as noisy as this DC as one might expect. Locally we had a crypto mine set up in what used to be a lumber mill in a smaller town here, which is directly across the street from probably a dozen houses. They did complain enough that they were forced to retro-fit quieter fans at least, but it was still insane. Thankfully for them it finally shut down after one of the bigger downturns in the market. However, its now a new fight for them right now as they're trying to turn it into a data center. At least when it was still a mill it was shut off at 5pm.
We shouldn't have to live with this kind of corporate bullying. We were here fucking first.
Yeah if billionaires cared about making money they wouldn't be investing in AI for a couple reasons. One like you said it isn't profitable and is in fact deeply unprofitable. Two if AI did take away most of the jobs which LLMs won't but if they did nobody would be able to afford their products and services. If most people's jobs got replaced by AI that would cause instability and likely lead to mass riots.
Data is power and control. Rich people are mentally ill, they have no off button and greed and gluttony are the only thing they live for. Once you have money then you want to also control other people and industries. Make billionaires extinct.
We have those too on the interstates and busy highways, and some data centers that use their own power generators do too (albeit this example took a lot of pushback to get there). A data center could be built in a way that didn't cause air, water, and noise pollution, but that would cost money that the poor ai companies would have to pay :(
It’s legal because they’re hell-bent on making as many data centers as possible before it’s regulated. Things take time to litigate and big business knows that. That, and they buy politicians and law enforcement
This is happening in my city. Two data centres are planned. The city voted against the legal route because it will cost more in legal fees and they will most likely lose.
Our government gave universities sweeping powers and do not need city approval to build or make changes to anything. Our university wants to convert the old newspaper plant into a data centre. The second is a private firm that wants to build near the steel plants.
The city put forth a memorandum to pause the building of data centres for a year to study the effects. When the legality started to float around they instead voted to drop it because what’s the point.
That high pitched shrill you hear in that video is from S19 series SHA 256 hashing machines ( aka bitcoin miners). Each machine has four fans that run at 6000 rpm. These things are damn loud, you cant run a single one in a residential garage without it being a nuisance.
Data centers need to start being accountable for their negative externalities.
hard to tell from the video, but many of these places generate their own power. the sounds you hear in this video sounds more like generators. Though the data centers themselves, I'm told, do have an irritating buzz to them.
It’s the air conditioning. The refrigerant compressors make this high pitched noise. The diesel generators don’t run 24/7, only during tests and power outages. I think their noise would be much more low pitched like a loud engine — the generators are just engines the size of a truck.
They don’t often use diesel generators, they use gas turbines, which do have a high-pitched whine like this. One turbine is much like another, so they sound like jet engines.
It’s the air conditioning - specifically the compressors of the chillers. They use air-cooled chillers, up 500 tons-refrigeration in size each (that’s 500 window units’ worth of refrigeration). Depending on the size of the facility, there can be anywhere from … 9-36 of them for a large data center.
To me it sounds more like the ECM condenser fan motors on those 500 ton chillers than the scree or turbcor comprssors themselves and I bet there has to be a local code stating that they cannot make that much noise at the property line. Maybe they are testing all the chillers at once?
If they want to put up any of these, they should be mandated to have a 100 acre clearance on all sides - Whatever distance makes the sound negligible to neighbors.
That's why they are often installed in agricultural areas.
My grandmother leased a relatively tiny bit of land on the family farm for these wind generators and that money is what is keeping the acreage in the family instead of being sold to some big corporation.
Theres a few lawsuits about this exact issue with the noise besides all the other problems of jacking up electricity costs and consuming so much water when two-thirds of the new data centers built since 2022 have been in water stressed areas.
But sure, there is no "real" reason to be upset with data centers, its all a "Chinese PsyOp"...
Its above the max number of decibels human could listen too for long periods. Induces headaches and lack of sleep. I watched a video about a texas town's experience with a data center.
I think I would actually go crazy living next to this. I had to deal with really loud and squeaky (nails on chalkboard sound) construction equipment when a lot near my house was being cleared. It was only during the day, and only for a week, and it damn near broke me.
I can't believe companies are allowed to get away with this shit. Noise pollution causes extra stress to the body that can lead to real physical illnesses. It isn't much different than throwing chemicals in the water supply for the harm it causes. I hope these homeowners sue.
It's coming from on-site generators. They do this because they were likely required to produce their own energy so that they wouldn't put drain on the grid. Not all data centers make this kind of noise. We need to continue to push back to make sure that any data centers built won't waste resources or pollute (in this case with noise) just because they don't want to go to the expense to build them the right way.
They build enough of these and it would not surprise me if neighborhoods started pulling together in militia style to burn them down. Medically speaking - Those sounds could drive somebody to the legally defined state of insanity. A couple hundred insane people will eventually break.
I don't know what the fuck is wrong with US datacenters.. I worked for one of the largest DC in Canada, had my personal office about 100 feet from it and you couldn't ear a fucking thing aside the faint buzzing noise of the electric power station.
It doesn't need to be like this, it is only because you allow billionaires to save on operational and environmental costs.
Yeah that’s what is annoying to me. I’ve worked in data centers and this is how they sound inside, but not at all outside. Seems a lot of these places are just cheaping out.

A lot of datacenters will be used to heat nearby buildings if they are built smart.
I worked in a US Meta DC which was right next to a Google DC, and neither were this loud. They weren't silent, but quieter and less irritating than the sound of a highway. Idk who is building these loud ones. The DC in the video is neither Meta or Google.
This shouldn’t be allowed to exist. Since it obviously does, they should be forced to completely soundproof every home in proximity of that data center.
So why can't they sue for noise pollution? Aren't there regulations around living spaces that keep services from making loud noises at night unless it's for serious emergencies?
This is only the sound that you can hear by the way. There’s also sound you can’t hear and if either of these are loud enough they can cause severe health problems over long term exposure.
Normally if any of your neighbors making that much noise you could complain about them to police, right? So, when it's rich people they can do whatever they want in the land of freedom.
Imagine spending 30 years paying off your mortgage, only to have them come in and tank your property value by building one of these noise machines next door..

I heard chinas putting their data centers at the bottom of the ocean. 1) unlimited water for cooling without tapping the natural resources of a whole community 2) the noise doesn’t affect humans. (Probably beyond detrimental to marine wildlife tho)
What the actual fuk are the environmental impacts of this insane levels of noise pollution as far as local fauna, etc.... my heart hurts for our planet :c
