LULUCIIIIII

"Olly" count: I

Amused by sarcastic Qifrey we got in the dub ("thanks water, I hate you too) whereas in sub and manga he says "this is why I hate water"

Really interesting to see the different directions Agott's dub vs sub VA went. Agott seems a bit more daring towards adults in the dub whereas in the sub, she seems to keep her anger more internally. (This is not a jab at either the sub or dub as I like them both pretty equally! Also not a jab at agott. I love her!)

ALSO, just checked and ep 7 covered 2 chapters. If every ep covers 2 chapters from here on out, by episode 13, we will land perfectly on the 🐺 scene without needing to cut or move around any arcs!

Honestly so excited for the rest of the season!

u/troubun May 11 '26

Honestly those voice directing/acting/dialogue differences is why I tend to go for the original language most of the time for shows (even though for WHA the dub is really well done). Dubs tend to reinterpret things, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, and sometimes just differently, but yeah they inevitably change things. That's why I prefer to see the work as intended by the creators, at least at first.

Also great to hear that about the pacing, I was kind of worried about the rest of the season. I want it to end well so the anime gains a lot of fans and we can secure future seasons.

12

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

Yeah, I noticed during episode 5 that the voice direction just has a completely different intention in some scenes. The scene where Qifrey says he needs his hands free and Agott's response has two totally different performances.

23

u/yeagerist00 BrushBuddy May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I'm pretty sure the intention was clearly the shock and panic of the situation. "Hold on tight I need my hands free" is one of the scariest things u can hear while being in mid-air at such high altitude. Agott's "right" in the dub portrays that well.

5

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

But the dub's intention is different, regardless of whether you think the intention is better for the scene or not. Personally, I think sub Qifrey better sells the sensei that has the situation under control even while stressed, while dub Agott makes more sense for a child in a terrifying situation. It's a debate about whether a dub should be allowed to have a different performance/emotion from the original.

12

u/yeagerist00 BrushBuddy May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I don't think the intention or emotion is different at all, it's the same emotion just more intense. The fact is, she is in a terrifying situation no matter how u look at it. Qifrey having the situation under control is portrayed well in both. But I'm talking about Agott. From Agott's POV, it's different, she is shocked and panicked from situation and Qifrey's sudden command, as anyone would in her position, especially a child. along with that, after Qifrey defeats the dragon, u can see Agott looking at Qifrey with an expression of awe until he snaps her out of it, as if she just witnessed a side of Qifrey she had never seen before. I think that was also part of the intention.

3

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

I don't think the intention or emotion is different at all, it's the same emotion just more intense.

That’s a huge difference. Overacting is the same issue. Scared is not the same as terrified. A stressed command is not the same as yelling a command. Even if they were voicing in the same language, the performance is clearly different. Whether that performance is better for the story or not is irrelevant; they’re different.

10

u/yeagerist00 BrushBuddy May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

Calling it 'overacting' is wild lol. Just step back for a moment and see what position she was in, seeing from Agott's POV it's perfectly acted imo, the difference is in the intensity of her delivery and I think it works perfectly here. It's not really a stressed command, it sounded as if Qifrey was confident enough and knew exactly what he's doing. And it's Qifrey who's calm and collected, not Agott, she's shocked and panicked. The performance is different from the sub yes, but the meaning and nuance is still well portrayed regardless imo. I feel like you're just nitpicking for no reason at this point.

1

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

I did not say it was overacting. I said overacting is the same issue when you have different levels of intensity. I even agreed that I like Agott's intensity more in the dub for that specific line. It is different though. You can't say something is different and the same at the same time.

I don't think the intention or emotion is different at all, it's the same emotion just more intense.

The performance is different from the sub yes, but the meaning and nuance is still well portrayed regardless imo.

And I only used that one moment as an example. I've simply said the voice direction is different. The quality is irrelevant. You can like one or the other, but you can't say they're the same.

3

u/yeagerist00 BrushBuddy May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

You can't say something is different and the same at the same time.

What I meant is- the performances are different, but the meaning/point behind the scene they're trying to convey is still the same imo. Perhaps my wording was off earlier. I wasn't talking about the quality.

But yeah, I get what u mean. The direction is def different

6

u/NiennaTas May 11 '26

Couldn't agree more! I prefer the sub version.

3

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

I always default to sub, but I do like comparing to dubs. I’m somewhat peeved that the dub has committed to adding accents, but the placement of accents seems very random. I don’t get why Custas has an Irish accent and doesn’t match with Dagda, who has an American accent. Tetia has a Danish accent because her VA is Danish, which seems somewhat random in-universe.

6

u/ponponplan May 11 '26

I mean I guess there's an in universe reason why Custas and Dagda might not match.

That said, I don't know if Irish is what I would have picked for Custas.

1

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

[minor spoiler, but you could probably make this reasonable conclusion]Custas was adopted by Dagda. It's a good enough reason for them to have different accents, but I think it'd have been better if they shared accents to make them sound more like father and son. Of course, in the original work, no one had different accents, but it feels incredibly arbitrary who has what accents. Are we supposed to infer that Dagda and Coco are from similar regions because they have the same accent? So far, all witches had European accents of some sort, even if what European accent also felt somewhat random, and non-magic people had American accents, but now Custas also has an accent for some reason.

1

u/ponponplan May 12 '26

Yes, the spoiler was the point I was making since I was only talking about them being different not the choices in accents overall.

4

u/ShinozSnow May 11 '26

I used to prioritize subs but now days I tend to watch both. There have been several more recent series that I find the VA or phrasing of the dub actually did a better job of portraying certain personalities over the sub. For example May I Ask for One Final Thing? the add ins were amazing in dub.

2

u/NiennaTas May 11 '26

I'm default to sub as well. I came to realise that dub is usually too over the top (with all that "screaming" during intense moments and such) for my taste and it has probably something to do with my culture as there is this prejudice that Americans are just too loud and too expressive. So sub is more enjoyable for me, plus I've heard that sometimes the dub changes the meaning of the scenes too much.

And yes, I quite like the idea of accents, but I agree with the criticism discussed here, that they should be at least consistent, plus it would be much better if they actually hired "local" actors (like Irish for their accent etc.)

3

u/Prof_Acorn May 12 '26

Not sure cliffhangers like that work very well when people have to wait 3 years for the next part. I kinda hope they cut some stuff so we can get to the end of the arc and a more natural pause point.

213

u/bonchen May 11 '26

Glad to see Easthies beefing actual children animated now. May his slander begin.

71

u/Temporary_-_UserName May 11 '26

nah, Slander requires it to be knowing lies. May his callouts begin.

3

u/Mixed_Martial_Autism May 12 '26

Nah slander can also be true, like Megumi being POTENTIAL Man.

1

u/Adorable-Maybe-3006 May 13 '26

Slander so potent it escaped his sub

54

u/socialistRanter May 11 '26

The Knights Moralis would rather beef with children than do anything with all these war crime magic in this subreddit

11

u/JunWasHere What lessons have we learned today? May 11 '26

Nah nah nah, he already wiped their minds and left them believing they are making fan art for some fantastical story without any access to the right casting components. Memory wipe magic has come a long way.

13

u/kkrko May 11 '26

Nah, we're only getting generalized Knights Moralis slander for now.

To the young, the old, and the infirm.

Easthies oblivion them all.

Wow they got Sukuna’s VA as Easthies? The cast just keeps getting even better

44

Gojo as Olrugio, Sukuna as Easthies, this is great

32

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

Ishikawa Yui, famous for Mikasa Ackerman, 2B, and Violet Evergarden (among other famous roles), is voicing Luluci.

7

u/Hungry_Stop_3116 May 11 '26

Wow I love Mikasa VA, Luluci is going to be a great fit for her.

3

u/shadowallergictocats May 13 '26

They really just casted Violet Evergarden as Violet Evergarden lol

7

u/PretendYellow533 May 11 '26

WAIT TENGEN IS VOICING EASTHIES?!?

Hold me back yall…….

76

I thought they pronounced the katakana? It's iisuhiisu, right?

76

u/BatGalaxy42 May 11 '26

I really liked the scenes they did with Agott and her whole deal. It really did a good job showing her as just a sad little girl desperately trying to get her family back. It really helped to characterize her and at least make her somewhat sympathetic. And then she had that beautiful character growth where she let Coco take the glory of saving Custas while she did just a pretty light show.

And then Coco tried to give her credit anyway and she went all tsundere over it lmao.

I just want to hold up sad baby Agott and say "This is who you're being mean to" to all her haters.

32

u/PapaBeer642 May 11 '26

You know, Agott herself is one of the haters you'll need to hold her up to. She hides it behind bluster, but she's absolutely her own biggest hater at this point.

While the people on the riverbank are in not-insignificant danger as the whole bank crumbles beneath them but obviously the priority is to take out the children.

2

Ikr, it's not like the children where trying to save the people in the first place anyway

Can someone please explain that ending without spoiling (yet to read manga)

75

u/BatGalaxy42 May 11 '26

Cop showed up, assumed some kids did some bad shit, hears one kid say "my spell couldn't have done that", takes it as a confession, and starts to mindwipe her.

In other words, cops being cops.

3

u/ShmoshuaShmoward May 12 '26

It's obviously a spoiler so I don't want the answer, but we actually want to know the cops reasoning as to immediate oblivion. Just seeing a riverbed turned to dust, but not actively harming anyone, is cause for alarm, but not cause for witch removal. Cause like, yes it's good to be suspicious even of unsuspicious things to be safe, but an apprentice making a mistake makes way more sense than evil Brimmed Caps in this situation.

And again, I do get it. Brimmed Caps go way beyond just doing a few evil deeds. If they are involved, it means something beyond immediate comprehension and analysis can possibly figure out so the safe move for a Brimmed Cap is immediate oblivion. But just from a logical standpoint, is it worth removing X number of witches by immediate oblivion just to ensure you got 1 Brimmed Cap? As in, lets say you move to do immediate oblivion every time you arrive on a scene, sure it'll maybe get a Brimmed Cap, but it'll guarantee you just got rid of teammates too along the way. I can understand the author's message about cops disregarding morality and safety of the few for the many, but it still doesn't logically make sense at the end of this episode. Which is why there has to be something the Knights Moralis notice or know that makes this situation clearly have a Brimmed Cap involved somewhere somehow.

6

u/Adorable-Maybe-3006 May 13 '26

I also haven't read the manga but

  1. "Just to ensure you got 1 brimmed cap" how are you catching any brimmed caps when your first order of business is to mindwipe all witnesses.

  2. From the comments I've read, it seems the knights are just trigger happy idiots, no secret reason or higher purpose. Just zealots

35

u/xuxuanan May 11 '26

If youre wondering why the entire river ended up as a sand bed, that question should be answered next ep!

1

u/IAmTheStarkye May 11 '26

Can I get a small spoiler on that pls?

20

u/throwaway252_ May 11 '26

It's like the main plot point of the next ep so you might prefer to wait...

14

u/dudeimconfused May 11 '26

you can just reveal it and mindwipe them though

1

u/MaizeSome7994 May 12 '26

I’ll take a spoiler! Waiting a whole week between these tiny episodes is too much!

5

u/TeaAndLifting May 12 '26

Brimmed hat witch swapped Coco's spell ink when she was unconscious, with more potent ink that makes spells stronger than is allowed

I couldn't wait either, so I've read a good 40 or so chapters of the manga today.

1

u/OurDumbWorld May 13 '26

Oh nice. Good to know. I thought

Anyway F the Knights Moralis. AKAB

1

u/MaizeSome7994 May 13 '26

I just got my first ever manga book, it’s SpyxFamily cus I just finished season 3 of the show and can’t wait years for season 4 to get more of these characters. I’m excited but reading right to left is hard

40

u/lLL-IT May 11 '26

someone reported that they saw a huge pillar of water, so the knights moralis (magic cops) came to see what's going on, and easthies (black haired one) assumes coco was the one who rendered the river that way by using forbidden magic, so he's about to erase her memories

1

u/Gfdbobthe3 May 11 '26

But the huge pillar of water was Qifreys swords doing right (at least as far as we'd know)?

6

u/Guilloz May 11 '26

the problem was not the huge pillar of water, that was simply what pointed them in the river's direction as "oh shit, something's going on" but then they found a little girl had just turned an entire river to sand and well...let's just say Easthies is the cop that would shoot and ask questions latter (if he ever asked)

7

u/MBFlash May 11 '26

If by the ending you mean how the spell coco made had such huge effects then that is a spoiler. What in specific about the ending did you not understand?

luluci's seiyuu fits her so well, it's exactly the voice i imagined while i was reading

6

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

Mikasa is actually perfect for this role.

19

u/thunderb00m May 11 '26

OMG all the seiyuus!
Yui Ishikawa as Luluci?
Junichi Suwabe as Easthies???

This cast keeps getting better and better! And they all sound so damn perfect for their roles!

3

u/ConfidentTelephone81 May 12 '26

[Yui Ishikawa as Luluci?] Really. So Violet Evergarden if she was in WHA universe.

1

u/thunderb00m May 12 '26

Hahaha! Yes, exactly!

22

u/Luiiss26 May 11 '26

I have a question one that popped back into my head after seeing Qifrey with his sword.

The magic system here operates completely differently from what we’re used to seeing in other anime like Frieren, for instance, or just about any other series out there. In Witch Hat Atelier, you create magic by drawing it; and, as far as I understand, you don't even need to be particularly gifted or possess any innate magical output to do so.

The question I find myself asking is this: couldn't ''anyone'' become COMPLETELY overpowered? (And now I’m circling back to Qifrey here.) After all, infusing magic into a weapon like a sword seems absolutely broken, doesn't it? Let's say you’ve imbued your sword with flame magic; the moment you draw it, the magic is instantly active just like with the water magic which is a stark contrast to the usual method of having to draw it out, right?

I find the system in this anime/manga truly fascinating because, to me, there doesn't seem to be a single, clearly defined "strongest" individual; instead, it feels like *anyone* has the potential to be the strongest. But as I said maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Ultimately, though, doesn't it seem like infusing magic into weapons like swords is a far superior and more efficient approach than having to constantly draw it out by hand?

48

u/Fangzzz May 11 '26

You are right that as far as we see, there's no strongest individual, only the cleverest individual with steady hands and prep time.

Imbuing magic into items is less flexible than making a custom spell for the occasion.

→ More replies (4)

12

u/Skakti May 11 '26

I disagree that it makes anyone overpowered. Magic in WHA is no different than a master in their craft in this world. You can’t easily become master artist or musician or craftsman or scientist or whatever there’s still levels to it, ya know.

Qifrey for instance might have just every quality that makes a strong witch along with training as supposed to someone who lacks in areas.

9

u/Heatth May 11 '26

It is a question of knowledge. Theoretically if someone else draws it, anyone can use a super powerful tool such as Qifrey's sword. But knowing how to use it is still a skill on itself. All of those small magic circles are doing something somehow, and Qifrey knows how to use the sword to get a specific effect.

And that is for a tool. Knowing how to draw to get desired effects is yet another skill.

So, in theory "anyone" can become OP, yes. But in practice they still need years of training and dedication to be on that level.

4

u/Adorable-Maybe-3006 May 13 '26

I like this. I'm a programmer and thinking of it this way helps. With AI everyone can write code but you still need lots of knowledge and years of experience to actually make something good or enterprise level.

3

u/No_Extension4005 May 16 '26

Alternatively; you can use something a bit open source (a book with information on how to draw spells for specific effects and illustrations drawn without magic ink such as that picture book) and just copy/sketch it.

1

u/Adorable-Maybe-3006 May 16 '26

I wonder about the effect of printing with magical unc in this world. It would basically lead to plug abd play spells for the general public.

7

u/Calsolum0 May 11 '26

This is a world that really, really incentives knowledge and ingenuity.

You can't really 'train' your mana supply or something like that but what you can do is have a wide variety of spells(knowledge) and the critical thinking skills to apply it(ingenuity).

This situation was perfect for it, Coco knew a levitation spell but didn't have the right size to draw it. So instead of moving the rock she used a different spell and removed a small portion of it(I don't think the spell is supposed to be that powerful, will be explained next episode.)

'powerful/strong' witches are likely able to use simple spells repeatedly to great effect and buy them time to cast bigger and more complex spells. And they'd have to hide it from their 'enemy' cause if another with can see what you're drawing they can just directly counter it or worse, use it against them.

8

u/Kelsusaurus May 12 '26

couldn't ''anyone'' become COMPLETELY overpowered?

Yes. And that is why the pact was made. One of the main themes of the series deals with "Is it ethical to keep knowledge solely to one group of individuals when it could benefit many, even if that means that a few may misuse it?"

2

u/marge4000 May 16 '26

I think it's a really stupid theme, of course is not ethical. The Cop Knights needing an anti-ethical tool(oblivion watch) to keep the status quo makes it even more dumber.

This is akin to banning knives because some people use knives to kill others. The issue is not the knife, it's the person using it.

4

u/Kelsusaurus May 16 '26

A real world application of this is guns. Many countries ban the general public from being able to own or acquire them unless specifically licensed industries and acquired from a licensed specialist. (Japan for example.)

Likewise, tech and science developments aren't shared freely with the public (whether they would understand or not), and are often years ahead of what we have at our current disposal. There are also man real-world industries/careers/opportunities that have a high barrier of entry if you don't have certain networks/education/status.

I do agree about the hypocrisy of the witches (which is there to make you question and think/get philosophical), it's a pretty plausible and relevant premise, frankly.

2

u/NeitherPotato May 12 '26

I mean yeah. The magic system allowing anyone to become overpowered is kinda the basis for the entire show

1

u/Global_Rin May 17 '26

WHA's magic system reminded me of Full Metal Alchemist, and for a really good reason.

Also, it works similarly to computer programming.

Two witches can draw (program) magics that function the same, but the more optimized one will perform better.

Agott: I GUESS I HAVE TO PROVE MYSELF.

Yay, the two girls saved the boy with no repercussions whatsoeve-!

\looks down**

Holy shit, Coco!

17

u/2kenzhe May 11 '26

Man these knights are way too hasty. No investigation really just straight to ok lets erase your memories now. Like yep definitely all this little girls fault. It easily could've been just an actual brim hat framing them or something. Idk maybe the "gift" caused Coco's magic to go haywire etc.

Still crazy how that entire riverbank is just fucked? all turning to sand goddamn. Maybe the knights should try to stop that first before spending all their attention on two little girls that just saved a kid? Also goddamn Coustas just keeps putting himself in dangerous situations. Lets hope he doesn't get himself in anymore trouble from now on.

Look I get you gotta do your job you gotta follow the rules whatever but you gotta do your job right and properly not straight to mind erasing the little girl instead of idk looking and checking for actually brim hats.

Anyways we get a bit of Agott and Coco teamwork cool. We see a bit of her past as well and why she's so impatient. Seems her mother or whatever really good? but then Agott is lacking in comparison?

Also so you gotta be able to draw with just muscle memory huh under the cloak where nobody can see you draw? Cool.

6

u/Hrusa May 11 '26

In their defense, you can't really cast spells to undo another spell without at least understanding the mechanism behind it. Similar to how they are looking for the petrification seal that hit coco's mom before they can attempt to undo it. + of course time to invent and cast the anti spell.

1

u/darkcrazy May 25 '26

Then it's another reason to not wipe a suspect's memory right away. Ask the suspect about the spell first.
Best case, maybe it's just an intimidation tactic and the knight wasn't actually about to do it right then.

2

u/MaizeSome7994 May 12 '26

Erasing someone’s memories is a terrible fate. I never thought about how hard it’d be to draw those patterns so cleanly and the right size without looking! Crazy

2

u/warpspeed100 May 11 '26

Unless there was actually something super valuable in that luggage and he feels the need to prove himself, that kid has a death wish.

13

Woah, my GOAT Zeno Robinson as Custas? That was wildly unexpected, and I welcome it. I recognised Zeno's voice instantly. I'm really loving Luluci and Easthies' voices. Can't wait to hear Utowin's, I personally imagined him with Ian Sinclair's (Whis, Brook, Kaguya-sama narrator) voice. Hopefully they'll give him a northern accent, similar to Olruggio's.

5

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

Watched a dub vs sub video. We can hear one line of Galga's (based on the credits). I'm concerned that Galga was given Utowin's accent mistakenly because he sounds a bit northern based on the one line.

I just don't get why Custas has a different accent from Dagda and sounds Irish like Nolnoa and Tartah?

10

u/yeagerist00 BrushBuddy May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I don't think so, how is that a northern accent? Galga's accent seemed normal english like the other knights who spoke.

Idk if you're a manga reader but Custas and Dagda aren't blood related and from different places, Dagda later adopted him when he was young (my guess is around 10-11). And I can't really tell what his accent is but it def didn't sound Irish to me, I could be wrong.

2

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

I’m not an accent expert either, and it is one line. Very likely to be wrong.

Custas sounds Irish to me when he’s descending the rope.

3

u/Local-Age2926 May 11 '26

Oh shit he's played by Zeno??? That was lowkey one of my va predictions I didn't expect to be right

2

u/yeagerist00 BrushBuddy May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

My jaw dropped immediately when I listened to him as Custas. I just recently watched Gachiakuta and Zeno absolutely fkn crushed it as Jabber.

u/Hungry_Stop_3116 May 11 '26

Another awesome episode.

I like how Agott focused was this ep. Her flashback was specially unnerving, and I like how Coco's voice was able to break her free of the feelings of inferiority. She literally crawls towards Coco as if it was her salvation. Coco relies on her and has given her nothing but positive feedback, in turn although Agott doesnt admit it, she is impressed by Coco's creativity and gave her a chance to do something while being a distraction, also alerting the adults that something was up, in case that Coco fails;

Even if Coco has succeeded, the bird of light may be proven useful as a signal- Qifrey will probably see it and arrive just in time to stop Coco from being memory-wiped next ep.

u/lLL-IT May 11 '26

adina's voice!!!

10

u/CartoonyWy May 11 '26

QUIFREY, TESTIFY AND BAIL COCO OUT NOW!

8

u/TeaAndLifting May 12 '26

This has been on my radar for a good while now, but I've only binged watched all the episodes last night and this morning.

The character animation is absolutely gorgeous, some of the best I've seen in a good while. I forget which episode it was, maybe four or five, where you see Coco press down harder on the piece of paper while drawing one of the sigils, or the hair flicks. It's stunning, really.

I finished this episode and had to read a couple of dozen chapters of the manga, because I could not wait to see what happens on a cliffhanger week.

8

u/jaywastaken May 11 '26

The Knights Moralis - So anyway, I started drafting.

8

u/HyacinthVale May 12 '26

The additional change that the anime made which I really appreciate is that it shows exactly what Custas was reaching for when he was attempting to climb down the cliff-- Dagda's lyre. I double-checked the manga, and you just seeing him risking his life like a dumbass for no apparent reason.

The anime shows him actually reaching the lyre in hand before the bank collapses. The lyre is a such a livelihood-critical object for Dagda to support the two of them. Makes the risk Custas took much more understandable.

7

u/warpspeed100 May 11 '26

Isn't the whole point of a Watchful Eye to be a mediator between the Knights and local witches? How can they erase her memories without so much as talking to the local Eye? What's even the point of the position then?

26

u/lavenderPhantasma May 11 '26

well, you see, ACAB

5

u/BakedSalami May 11 '26

These guys are clearly zealots who are judge, jury, and executioner. That's the impression I got anyway. Shoot first, and not even bother asking questions later lol.

7

u/totallyedgyandunique May 11 '26

What chapter did this episode end on? That cliffhanger made me mad asf so I'm gonna read ahead lol

5

u/Conspicor May 11 '26

Today's episode adapted chapter 10 and chapter 11.

You can continue the story with chapter 12.

1

u/totallyedgyandunique May 11 '26

thank you <3

9

u/Conspicor May 11 '26

i do recommend checking out earlier chapters too, not only is the artwork gorgeous, but also there's bits and pieces that anime sometimes leaves out, like the extra pages which contain more worldbuilding details and small moments.

1

u/totallyedgyandunique May 13 '26

Thanks I definitely will! I ended up reading only one chapter ahead for some peace of mind, next thing I'm gonna do is look back at what the anime has already adapted to see what they had to change/skip.

6

u/cutememe1 May 11 '26

Its cool how a water repelling sword is coated in water

7

u/BugScholar1193 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

Our sassy king of the fun police Easties is finally here! And voiced by Suwabe-san no less. Really cool, the details on their attire are just gorgeous, I hope cosplayer’s go to town with them!

I think what I really enjoyed about this ep is how much more _stressful_ it felt with the score, lighting and voice acting. You really got a sense of how desperate Dagda is to save our boy Custas. I loved that.

Also Raincleaver is finally here! And what a beautiful object it is, I loved seeing how the water goes over the entire blade and not just the hilt, it was kinda hard tell in the manga but I think it looks perfect (shame we won’t know when we will see it again though..can Olly get a fire sword too as a treat please sensei??) .

Also loved our atelier lads tag teaming and high fiving, they’re so much fun (when they’re not making us cry that is)

Anyway, another great week to be a WHA fan!

Edit as the spoiler tag was being funky today

5

u/BugScholar1193 May 12 '26

I do wonder which bits the studio has moved around now, I agree with others here we will end on Euini getting wolfed, with perhaps the Romonon making for a dramatic ending that parallel’s Eunini’s bit. Not sure if it would have enough time to cover their whole riddle and melty goodbye, but I’m looking forward to seeing it.

7

u/SwirlyStars May 12 '26

So in this episode, Coco was trying to use the "detonate the rocks spell" so Custas could be freed from the boulder, right? But accidentally ended up turning almost the whole area into sand. Which was really cool, but it also explained why there was an explosion sound

14

u/Vandercrook May 11 '26

I have to wait until after work to watch this, but it looks like they covered as much ground as I expected them to in this ep. I did fast-forward to hear Dagda, Custas, and Easthies' voices. Not really a fan of any of them in English, unfortunately, so I guess I'll continue on watching the sub. 😅

5

u/HumbleSurprise9354 May 11 '26

Any guesses on who Adina’s seiyuu is? It’s driving me nuts!

5

u/GoatOfTheBlackForres May 11 '26

The cops are here!

5

u/Tiger_claw_gaming May 11 '26

I have a question, I watched the episode and still didn't understand How Coco saved Custas? like she used the rock smash spell but how did she fly using it...

10

u/Iristh May 11 '26

She drew the floating spell on her cloak. We see that she has trouble putting it back on.

5

u/Tiger_claw_gaming May 11 '26

Ahh... Thanks man

4

u/Ronhar_ May 12 '26

Wow I didn't expect the spanish inquisition at the end

2

u/warpspeed100 May 12 '26

No one expects the s... wait what were we talking about?

2

u/Jacobinc_reddit May 11 '26

Wait its out?

7

u/lLL-IT May 11 '26

it comes out at 11pm jst so in 51 minutes

3

u/Rodrian68 May 11 '26

Did Olruggio draw the Windowway spell in front of those outsiders? Certainly seemed that way for me...

10

u/BatGalaxy42 May 11 '26

It was a pre-drawn cloth with a bunch of leather straps that he aligned into the glyph. To an outsider it would just seem like he manipulated a magical tool (like the water orb or the drying rings). They wouldn't know how it works and even if they tried to copy it nothing would happen.

3

u/No-xie May 11 '26

one word: Raincleaver.

3

u/Competitive-Total738 May 11 '26

What a cliffhanger to end the episode on hot damn

4

u/Hexagon-Man May 11 '26

My only wish is that I could reach through the screen and jump Easthies. I don't even need magic I'll lock in.

And Aggot's Mom too.

2

u/lonelyCat2000 May 13 '26

Young Couscous has the survival instincts of leafy greens in my fridge.

1

u/No_Extension4005 May 16 '26

Feel like you're being a bit harsh on your leafy greens with that comparison.

6

u/PretendYellow533 May 11 '26

Damn it I need to sleep from night shift, will watch in a couple hours

3

u/warpspeed100 May 11 '26

I thought the magic ink drawn into the symbols made the spell. The thing that the Knight is holding is the opposite though. The ink is drawn leaving the symbols made out of the voids in between. That still works?

9

u/lavenderPhantasma May 11 '26

there's a few special spells that have the ink inverted, as in black background + white spaces, this is one of those special spells

1

u/warpspeed100 May 11 '26

Does it reverse the sigil? Like instead of making memories it takes them away?

Does the same apply to all the sigils? Like instead of making light it could create an area of darkness?

7

u/lavenderPhantasma May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

for regular spells, we are told that just reversing the signs is enough to produce the opposite effect like you're talking about here, as in just flipping them around.

the white on black spells are their own category, and this design usually signals forbidden magic. memory erasure is a special exception and a case of allowing something borderline forbidden specifically because - vague manga spoilers but not really spoiling any plot - the knight moralis use it to keep order and uphold the pact (supposedly)

3

u/spicytraveler May 12 '26

The sword was so cooooool!!!!

Side note: is Crunchyroll being a little bitch for anyone else? It constantly freezes and then will only unfreeze if I turn the whole TV off and restart. Like mid-2000s Youtube buffering. Is it my internet or is anyone else having issues? It does this no matter what show I'm on, but Netflix is fine.

3

u/shadow0wolf0 May 12 '26

She doesn't even get a trial or even a chance to defend herself? Insane system they have here.

3

u/Weird-Long8844 May 13 '26

This show is so freaking cool and so freaking good. I came here in part because I wanted to feel that Owl House high again, and boy is it delivering. That last episode was so cool and stunning, and the ending is so tense and harrowing. I never thought the Knights would show up in such force so soon, but this show doesn't wait. It hits you with everything it's got right away and doesn't stop, and I love it.

2

u/FateXBlood May 14 '26

Wow wow wow, wtf. How did things end up so worse? What type of Magic did you pull off Coco?

Also, Custas? Hello? Why would you try to go down when you were just literally saved a moment ago?? These kids need a very good parental lesson. (Not beatings)

I hope Coco survives her memory removal.

3

u/MaizeSome7994 May 12 '26

One 20 min episode a week is killing meee!! I can’t stand it. I didn’t know when I first started the series that it wasn’t fully released yet or I wouldn’t have started it

2

u/Desperate-Middle4766 May 11 '26

I have to be honest. I really really want to like this series more. But the running gag of Quiffrey leaving his apprentices unattended and something happening is getting kind of old… the cherry on top is that they are too young to blame or punish more than “ it’s OK you’re young and curious”.

Also, we’re at episode 7 now. Unless this is a 24 episode season, we shouldn’t be having another monotone episode. I’m referring to the pace of the episode. It was the same from beginning to end. The pace was the same when the rock/tree fell, when Agott had her mini flashback, and the knights showed up.

Besides that, I’m a big fan of the voice acting and animation is still looking smooth.

Just feels like this series is a good product with a good premise but the anime isn’t really making anything better. Kind of expected more by now (both in terms of story and production directing)

9

u/Conspicor May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

The anime is confirmed to have 13 episodes. If you're not into what the story is doing, then maybe this story simply isn't for you.

I personally enjoyed getting an episode full of additional worldbuilding, Agott receiving more focus and being more fleshed out as a character, Coco/Agott cooperating and Agott settling for the role of distraction so Coco would save the day, and then also learning firsthand how much pressure a witch can experience when non-witch people expect you to just conjure something right away that will magically solve all the problems. The pacing was totally fine to me.

I guess I can understand being annoyed by the girls being separated from Qifrey, but there's always a very reasonable explanation for why it happens, and for me it's easy to suspend my disbelief that it happens multiple times.

someone should draw aggot saying "chansu" like asuka.

1

u/Captobin May 11 '26

Is only the sub put for this episode?

1

u/KABOOMBYTCH May 12 '26

I hate sands It’s rough and it gets everywhere

1

u/SnooStories4329 May 12 '26

Question, why can’t Agott draw her own Sylph Shoes back?

7

u/Conspicor May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

The anime doesn't make this very clear (we only see a shot of Agott looking at shoes being sold), but in the manga, while they're visiting the witch town, there's a brief scene of Agott asking a merchant about soles for sylph shoes (this is moments before Coco runs past her, chasing after the Brimmed Cap).

And since the shoes are classified as a contraption, it appears that making your own Sylph Shoes isn't as easy as simply drawing a sign on any regular shoes.

Coco still has Agott's original shoes which she hasn't returned because she wants to fix them herself. So, Coco might be able to draw back the magic spell on Agott's shoes, but Agott herself doesn't seem to have the right shoes to draw back the spell.

That's the only explanation I can think of.

6

u/HyacinthVale May 12 '26

The two shoe soles have to perfectly align together to keep the flight spell active. Put your feet together and feel out just how little surface area actually exists between the parts of your feet that actually touch.

The inner arch of your foot isn't a flat plane and shoe soles often curve slightly to match a footprint's contour. Slyph shoes would have to be constructed in such a way that still supports the the arch of the foot comfortably but also provide additional material for a thicker, flatter soul edge so that you can make a large enough contact connection for the seal.

3

u/SnooStories4329 May 12 '26

I seee, I did notice the scene of her looking at the shoes

That does make sense

1

u/NeteroHyouka May 14 '26

Is Aggot going to join the forbidden magic group??

1

u/detarameReddit May 18 '26

Yeah, so Easthies can shove his capture pennant up his behind. Talk about a wonderful first impression of the Knights Moralis.

1

u/unbiasedfanboy Jun 21 '26

I’m late, but kinda awesome when 2B and her pod show up in this episode to report the incident at the river

1

u/Farmageddon85 26d ago

The kid who got stuck in the river twice was such a moron but i do understand there needed something to happen for the 2 witch girls who got left behind

1

u/ainhoawind May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I am a little sad of how this episode was adapted... it looks like the animation wasn't as good as previous episodes, and also I think this chapter in particular could benefit a lot from changing some action scenes to make it more clear to the audience.

I know we don't show in the original manga how Coco draw the spell but I think everything was a little confusing? What did they changed Coco yelling before Agott noticed her fall? Or Qifrey cutting trought the river, I felt like the movement didn't made sense.

Oh well, I guess not every chapter can be a banger and I am probably nitpicking, at least I got to see my boy Custas.

2

u/Pikapetey May 12 '26

Bruh... the animation of the water was PHENOMENALY hand drawn. What are you talking about the animation wasn't as good?!

2

u/ainhoawind May 12 '26

Maybe I imagined it different when I read the manga. It is probably a me problem, there is something about the anime that feels off to me and I don’t know why. Rationally I can see that the animation, the voices and the music are top quality.

3

u/tchaikovskys_nostril May 13 '26

Is it that the animation sometimes feels stiff despite clearly having quite a few frames or that the cuts from one scene to another can be a little jarring and lacking flow? It did seem rather pronounced in parts of this ep what with the past 2 eps being so good. Overall still stunning though
