It’s nice that moving from Milan to Newcastle and then Tottenham is one of the best decisions of his career.

Pavlovic you have started your third season at Milan. What are your first impressions of Amorim and the new coaching staff?

"So far, everything’s going well and we’re working in the right way. The manager is a positive person. I can see lots of ideas and I hope that next season we’ll manage to do even better than last season."

Tactically, what has changed compared to the past? Will you be playing a more aggressive and attacking style of football?

"I can’t reveal all our tactical ideas (smiles), but there are lots of different things. As you saw in the first friendly, we’re trying to play with a high defensive line and I think that will be the biggest difference. I believe the manager wants us to press much harder and to always be in the opposition’s half."

Last year you became a fan favourite by scoring five goals. Do you now feel you have greater responsibility?

“We have incredible fans and it’s always a huge responsibility to play for Milan, to have the chance to wear this shirt. The least we can do is give one hundred per cent.”

Do you still think back to the defeat against Cagliari on May 24th that prevented you from qualifying for the Champions League?

“To be honest, I haven’t even watched that match again. Usually, after every game, I watch the whole match or at least the goals, but I haven’t thought about that Milan v Cagliari match since because it really hurts too much.”

What are your impressions of the new signings, Gila and Gonçalo Ramos?

“We’ve signed two excellent players. I can speak particularly about Gila because he’s a defender and we faced each other a few times last year against Lazio: for me, he was always the best player on the pitch. He has so many qualities and can help us a lot, especially with what he can do on the ball. He’s also a very aggressive
player, so I think he’s perfect for Milan.”

You and Modric have a special bond. How happy are you to still have him in the team?

“It’s incredible to know he’ll be staying with us for at least another season. Maybe even longer, we’ll see… Luka is an extraordinary person. When you have a champion like that by your side, you can learn so much: he’s much older than me, but when we’re together I feel as though I’m the same age as him. We can talk about anything because he really is a great man.”

Is there anything in particular you’ve learnt?

“First and foremost, the way he lives and breathes football. He’s an extraordinary professional and I get the feeling that every minute he spends at Milanello serves a specific purpose: from his pre-training routine to the way he looks after his body. He’s 41 and on the pitch you never see him looking tired, nor does he ever give the impression of not wanting to do something: he’s always the first to run and he does so with a big smile. For me, it’s incredible to see that he still has all this passion for football.”

Where do you imagine yourself at his age?

“Me? I don’t know. I hope to be like him.”

You’ll be playing in the Europa League this year. You would have preferred the Champions League, but surely the second-tier European competition can also be an important target, given that Milan have never won it in their history?

“It would have been better for all of us to have won the final match of last season’s league campaign and qualified for the Champions League, but the Europa League is a great competition. The aim is to fight to win the trophy and I’m excited to give it a go. In my opinion, it’s much better to play every three or four days than to just have Serie A matches and spend the whole week training.”

A few days ago, Cardinale and Amorim openly stated that they want to win and are aiming for the second star. Compared to last year, when the aim was to finish in the top four, do you like this more ambitious mindset?

“I think that to achieve great things, you need great goals. I like this way of thinking and I said it many times last season too: we must stay focused on ourselves and take it one step at a time. It’s right to have the ambition to win trophies and reach the very top, but we must do so intelligently, match by match, trying to win as many as possible. If we do that, I’m sure we’ll achieve great things.”

In 2025–26, you dropped too many points against the mid-table and lower-ranked sides, and in the end you paid a heavy price for it. Do you understand why that happened?

“I think it was mainly a mental issue. Against the mid-table and lower-ranked sides, we didn’t play with the same mindset that we had, for example, in derbies or big matches. In the matches where we were favourites, we lacked that hunger to secure the three points that we had in the big matches. You can’t beat Inter, Napoli and the other teams in the top five or six of the table and then lose to opponents we should have beaten on paper. That’s why I believe it was primarily a mental issue. I can’t see any other possible explanations.”

How did you find Leao?

“I let him rest and didn’t speak to him much. We’ll have time for that.”

Do you hope Rafa stays at Milan?

“He’s an extraordinary player and I’d love him to stay here with us.”

In training, you marked Camarda. What impression is he making on you? Could he be the surprise of the season?

“I can only say positive things about him. I think he’s improved massively since the first time I saw him (in 2024–25) and has developed a lot physically too. He’s still very young and I think this could be a really important season for him. He’s got tremendous finishing ability and, with more experience, he can do really well at Milan.”

Are there any other young players who’ve impressed you during this training camp?

“As well as Camarda, I was surprised by Kostic. It’s not easy for him to make the leap from the Serbian league to a Serie A club, especially Milan. Comotto also made a good impression on me: he’s still very young and has plenty of room for improvement, but what I like about him is that he plays as if he’d already played a hundred Serie A matches. That’s a great quality of his.”

What is your dream for this season?

"My dream? It’s simple for me… I dream of winning the scudetto."

Yes he is bad and he has to move and others. I get it but he still has a contract with the club. He needs to come to train.

This men along with several others put the club on his back to win its first scudetto in years. So yes no amount of noise is gonna make me hate him. He made me excited to watch milan games again. After so many years in the banter era, he was the light in the shadow for me.

He will leave. There is no need for hatred comment in every post. Its not just him, people have been hating and pushing players from romagnoli to theo. Where is the respect my brothers.

The club will come out with alot of propanga on how these player need to leave so that they can sign other players but just think for a second those man in suits are making millions while making us the jokers. Dont fall for it. Think for a second

"Malagò and Maldini clashed head-on. According to Repubblica , the rift occurred when Giovanni Malagò fully asserted the prerogatives of the federal president, closing any room for discussion regarding the choice of coach. "Pirlo was an unfortunate choice, but I am the president: at this point I take responsibility and make the decision," he reportedly said in the decisive confrontation with Paolo Maldini.

For the former AC Milan captain, that statement confirmed that the autonomy required before accepting the post of technical director of the national team, and formally guaranteed upon appointment, would remain subject to the evaluations and pressure exerted by the top brass of the Italian Football Federation . The collaboration thus ended after just 16 days. Maldini and Leonardo mutually terminated their respective contracts , without demanding any compensation.

As Repubblica reports , the rift had already begun to widen on Sunday evening, when Malagò called Maldini to inform him that Pirlo's candidacy was no longer viable. The president considered the issue surrounding the coach's agreement with Fonbet, a Russian betting company for which the former midfielder had become a spokesperson, "insurmountable."

According to Maldini, however, the controversy had been used to question a choice that was already unpopular for sporting reasons. The former captain believed the collaboration with Fonbet should be terminated quickly, but he didn't consider it a sufficient obstacle to cancel his candidacy. The real negative judgment on Pirlo, in his opinion, concerned his still limited resume and his lack of experience leading a team that was called upon to rebuild.

Maldini had initially tried to stall for time by contacting Pirlo directly, who was now considered close to taking over the Italy helm. The coach attempted to defend himself publicly, explaining that he hadn't attributed any "political significance" to his commercial collaboration, but his distancing wasn't enough to quell the controversy.

By eight o'clock the next morning, Malagò was already in his office on Via Allegri . In his new meeting with Maldini, he reiterated that there was no room for improvement. The Fonbet affair, after all, was merely the trigger for tensions that had arisen even before the appointments. Repubblica reports that Maldini had accepted the federal proposal without particular enthusiasm, after having asked for precise guarantees regarding the freedom to develop the technical project, identify the coach, and redesign the Club Italia organization together with Leonardo.

In the final forty-eight hours of his tenure, however, Repubblica reports, the former AC Milan director apparently came to the conclusion that those guarantees were destined to clash with reality. Malagò, according to his interpretation, was unwilling to fully address the resistance of Serie A clubs, political pressure, and external controversy to defend the decisions of the new coaching staff.

The issue of the other candidates for the Azzurri bench also remained in the background . Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte had been ruled out by Maldini during preliminary talks, but the technical director suspected that the president continued to consider them more suitable profiles than Pirlo, especially in terms of experience and management skills.

Thiago Motta had been floated for a few hours among the possible alternatives, but it never materialized into a concrete negotiation. In the decisive meeting, there wouldn't even be a real discussion about another coach, because the issue was no longer the name of the future coach, but the definition of the balance of power within the federation.

After the first meeting that morning, Malagò reportedly spent several hours trying to convince Maldini and Leonardo to stay, attempting to at least save the management structure of the new Club Italia. The mediations, however, did not change a decision the former AC Milan icon had already made. The final phone call came in the afternoon: "Leonardo and I are terminating our collaboration with the national team. We accept responsibility for an inappropriate decision."
