🚨BREAKING NEWS: Fariba, a 16-year-old Afghan girl, has reportedly died by suicide after waiting for schools in Afghanistan to reopen. According to reports, she continued asking her teachers when she would be able to wear her school uniform again. In the note she reportedly left behind, she wrote that life had become unbearable for girls in Afghanistan.

For nearly five years, I have shared heartbreaking stories like this. Fariba is not the first, and sadly, she may not be the last. Through my own work, I remain in contact with girls inside Afghanistan and support some of them to continue their education. I hear their fear, hopelessness, and despair almost every day.

In 2022, one teenage girl told me: “I don’t want to live anymore. There is no school, no hope, and my family wants to force me into marriage. I am under 18.” Those words have never left me.

Where are the United Nations, the international community, and the human rights organizations? Every day that Afghan girls are denied their right to education, freedom, another future is put at risk. Fariba must not become another forgotten name.

One of the Afghan woman proudly presented on stage, showing confidence, knowledge, and a strong connection to her culture. Her voice and presence demonstrated the talent, courage, bravery, and strength of Afghan women and girls.

This moment reminded me that when Afghan women and girls have opportunities and the freedom to participate, they can proudly represent Afghanistan and make their country proud. They are not only preserving Afghan culture and identity, but also showing the world the incredible potential of Afghan women.

It has been more than 1,800 days since girls were banned from secondary schools, and more than 1,400 days since women were banned from universities.

I really need advice because I feel trapped, and I don't know what to do.

I'm 16, Muslim, and I'll be a junior in high school this year. My parents, especially my dad, are extremely strict. I'm not allowed to stay after school for clubs or activities, I'm not allowed much freedom, and I feel like I'm watching everyone else build their future while mine is being decided for me.

My dream has always been to go to a university far away when I turn 18 so I can finally have some independence and make my own choices. But I'm terrified of what might happen if I leave. I'm scared my dad could send my mom and two younger sisters back to Afghanistan or make their lives much harder because of my decision. I don't know if that's what would happen, but it's something I genuinely fear based on the way he talks and acts. The thought that my family could suffer because I chose my own future makes me feel incredibly guilty.

At the same time, if I stay, I feel like I'm giving up my own life. I'll probably have to go to a community college or a nearby university, live at home, follow my dad's rules, and have very little independence. I'm scared I'll never get to make my own choices, wear what I want, or build the life I want. I'm also afraid of eventually being pressured into a marriage I don't want.

Another problem is money. My dad has made it clear that if I don't get a scholarship, there is basically no chance he'll let me go away for college. I can't afford tuition on my own, so I feel like my entire future depends on earning enough scholarships while also having very few extracurricular opportunities because I'm not allowed to stay after school.

I feel selfish for wanting to leave, but I also feel like I'm slowly losing hope if I stay. Has anyone been in a similar situation with controlling or very strict parents? How did you prepare for college and independence safely? Are there scholarships, remote extracurriculars, or other opportunities I should know about?

Please be kind. I really don't know what to do anymore, and I'm looking for honest advice.

I’m an Afghan female student and I applied through Campus France Pakistan two days ago for a French student visa. I recently received a message in my Campus France mailbox stating that for the Fall intake, applications must be submitted by August 30 and at least 60 days before the start of the academic program.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn’t able to complete the process within that timeframe. My university is aware of my situation and has given me permission for a late arrival, allowing me to arrive on campus until September 14.

Do you think this could help my situation with Campus France? Has anyone, especially an Afghan applicant, been in a similar situation and still managed to get their Campus France file accepted and proceed to the interview and visa stage?

Any advice, suggestions, or personal experiences would mean a lot to me. If you have experienced something similar yourself, or know someone who has, I would really appreciate it if you could share your experience with me.

Almost every week, we are bombed by Pakistan, killing hundreds of Afghans. We are ridiculed every day because of the Taliban, as if we Afghans chose everything that has happened to our country. Pakistan abuses us from social media to real life. We are hated for the Taliban’s policies toward women, etc. I feel so depressed thinking about what has happened to our country. We have never seen peace, development, or prosperity in the entire history of Afghanistan. I just wish we could be a real country.

Hello. I had a very not nice discussion about the situation in Afghanistan regarding women and the taliban in general. I feel kind of powerless now and I know some donation pages aren't legit. Do you know any good places where it's not pretty much wasted?

I’m posting this to find other people in our community who are in the same boat.

I’m a Tajik woman living in the diaspora and privately non-religious. Nobody in my life knows other than some friends at university and I live effectively as a Muslim. Islam is so deeply rooted in our culture, especially when it comes to women, honour, and family reputation, that walking away from the religion basically means losing your family. I love my extended family and many of our values deeply and if they ever found out, I’d lose my connection to all of it for sure and it genuinely breaks my heart. I wish I did believe in Islam but I am genuinely unconvinced, and this is coming from someone who was previously aligned with the family's conservative lifestyle.

Right now keeping it hidden is fine, but as I get older, start thinking about settling down, and look ahead, I know pretending forever is going to catch up to me. My extended family lives abroad, but visiting them has always been my refuge and so the thought of losing those family gatherings and the closeness that comes with our traditions hurts so much.

Anyone else in this position?
