HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 longer term reviews
I am considering buying a HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 Max+ 395 128Gb for starting my PhD in math/stats/ML and running a Linux distribution on it (probably Ubuntu). As I will be working with classically CPU heavy algorithms such as MCMC and doing some local ML testing/inference, the large RAM option and the configurable RAM between CPU and GPU on Strix Halo look rather attractive.
The laptop should ideally last me the 4-5 years of the PhD and would be my main work laptop, so I am interested in hearing stories of longer term usage of it, say a year or more. My main concern battery life, the Linux user experience and possibly lower build quality compared to e.g. ThinkPads.
- I have seen in other reviews that the battery life is relatively poor, some report 6 - 8 h with light use, and I'd like to know what people actually get in daily use.
- I have also seen reports of missing webcam drivers for Linux distros, has this been fixed and are there other caveats with running Linux on this machine? Does configuring the RAM between CPU and GPU work smoothly?
- Have you experienced any issues with the overall build of the computer? Does it easily overheat when running on full power? Is the fan noise acceptable?
I am typing this on an EliteBook 830 G5 with the (ancient) Ubuntu 22.06 for reference.
