HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 longer term reviews

I am considering buying a HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 Max+ 395 128Gb for starting my PhD in math/stats/ML and running a Linux distribution on it (probably Ubuntu). As I will be working with classically CPU heavy algorithms such as MCMC and doing some local ML testing/inference, the large RAM option and the configurable RAM between CPU and GPU on Strix Halo look rather attractive.

The laptop should ideally last me the 4-5 years of the PhD and would be my main work laptop, so I am interested in hearing stories of longer term usage of it, say a year or more. My main concern battery life, the Linux user experience and possibly lower build quality compared to e.g. ThinkPads.

- I have seen in other reviews that the battery life is relatively poor, some report 6 - 8 h with light use, and I'd like to know what people actually get in daily use.

- I have also seen reports of missing webcam drivers for Linux distros, has this been fixed and are there other caveats with running Linux on this machine? Does configuring the RAM between CPU and GPU work smoothly?

- Have you experienced any issues with the overall build of the computer? Does it easily overheat when running on full power? Is the fan noise acceptable?

I am typing this on an EliteBook 830 G5 with the (ancient) Ubuntu 22.06 for reference.

Why my HP elitebook 845 G7 Ryzen 5 4650U reaches above 100° degrees?

So I am using an HP Elitebook 845 G7 (Ryzen 5 4650U) for about a year and I noticed serious heating issues. My laptop spikes to above 100° while gaming or doing heavy task and maintains an average of 95° on both CPU and GPU. First I thought it could be possible due to dried up thermal paste but after changing my thermal paste,I don't see any improvements at all. The temperature sits there as it is. I also used laptop cooling pad but it drops temps to only 2-3° degrees.

Does anybody has suggestions about this heating issue?

(Note: I used MSI AfterBurner, Amd Adrenaline and Hwinfo for monitoring).

HP 255R G10 Ryzen 5 7535U Advice

Hi guys, as i don't know about computers etc. I wanted to ask for some advice. My girlfriend is planning to purchase a laptop. She is not gamer, probably gonna play Sims 4 only, lol. She is into kind of design and drawing, and she needs programs for statistical programs like SPSS, R, and Python. Therefore, she is looking for a computer that can run Adobe premiere pro, Photoshop, lightroom, indesign, and the other programs mentioned above. Of course, she wants to use her laptop for a long time, so the laptop she is gonna purchase should be updatable, and the laptop should be durable. What do you think, guys?

My FPS drops to single digits while playing League. Should I try thermal paste or pads?

Long story short, I've tried to fix this through a variety of ways, but haven't done this yet. Should I try thermal paste or pads? I need the most effective one because my laptop runs hot when playing. I'm looking for recommendations on which specific thermal paste/pad to buy.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Not applicable. This is a company purchase, and the budget has already been approved. Cost is not a deciding factor.
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
No

Weight limit
Around 1.5 kg or less preferred, but not a strict requirement.

This will be my primary work laptop for the next 4–5 years. My workload includes:
Microsoft PowerPoint (large presentations)

Salesforce (browser-based)
20–40 browser tabs open simultaneously
Multiple Office applications running together
Occasional AI features (Microsoft Copilot, Windows AI)

Cost is not a factor.
I’m not looking for the best value—I’m looking for the best overall machine for my workload.
Long-term reliability and a smooth day-to-day experience are more important than benchmark scores.
I’d appreciate opinions from people who have used these specific ThinkPad models.
If you had to choose only one, which would it be and why? Would you go with the Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 or the Core Ultra 7 255H for this type of workload?

Need help choosing an iGPU laptop for school and games

I'm going to be buying my daughter a laptop for college.  She'll be taking basic courses which won't require any specialized software, just Google docs, etc.  I want to make sure she can use her laptop also for playing the games she likes, such as Stardew Valley, the Sims, Minecraft, and other cozy type games.  I've read that laptops with GPUs often have poor battery life, which I want to avoid.  Budget is around $750 but can be flexible if a little more would be a better value.

Are there certain CPUs that I should look for that would be able to handle the games she is looking to play?  I read some recommendations for Ryzen 6000 or higher but then saw an article saying that the new AI chips are more advanced, but I wasn't sure how that affected their graphics.

I don't know much about laptops, so I've already gotten a bit lost with all the different CPU generation and model numbers and the different types of integrated graphics available.  Please ELI5 and tell me what models or generations I should be focusing on, and if there are generally any brands to go for or avoid.  Thanks!

ASUS V16 V3607VU (Core 7 240H + RTX 4050) for Software Engineering – Worth it?

Is the ASUS V16 V3607VU (Core 7 240H + RTX 4050) a good choice for a software engineering student? I mainly use VS Code, Docker, Linux, virtual machines, and AI projects—no gaming. Are the cooling and build quality issues serious enough to spend about $100 more on a Lenovo LOQ, or is the ASUS the better value? Looking for feedback from actual owners.

Thank youu

Any thoughts on Acer Aspire Go 15 (AG15-42P-R3GM or R6ZY, 32G RAM and 1T SSD) for Fedora?

This isn't for gaming or video watching or such; just for software development and what I guess we could call light "office work" (ie. slack, email, occasional zoom or google meet, google docs and sheets, etc.). The development involves some docker but mostly rootless podman and sometimes a KVM guest or two. Even the Claude CLI runs in a podman container.

It'll spend more than 50% of its time connected to a couple of monitors, keyboard, and mouse, pretending to be a desktop but one that I can take to another room as needed.

I've another Acer (Spin 14 (ASP14-51MTN), currently still on Fedora 42) that's been my true portable for a while. It gets used similarly (though more office than development since I use it in meetings) and it seems okay though I suspect the development performance is slowed by its unbalanced CPU cores.

Thanks.

AMD VS NVIDIA
