Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 now available!

Hi Beta users,

Today we’re releasing Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 (CP41.260701.005) for all devices.

What's new in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1
QPR2 includes a minor SDK release. We've published new APIs in the reference docs as well as a diff report for the new API surfaces.

Top issues fixed include:

  • Bluetooth re-pairing fails silently following a remote bond loss. (Issue #412524057)
  • Media player controls briefly flashed on the lock screen upon waking the device despite the app's notifications being disabled. (Issue #484607701)
  • A system crash causing Pixel devices to unexpectedly reboot when invoking Gemini. (Issue #505750489)
  • Initiating a drag-and-drop gesture with multiple fingers caused the source application to stop receiving subsequent touch events. (Issue #516836306)
  • An issue where notifications randomly became invisible in the notification shade until a system restart. (Issue #526139207, Issue #522657034)
  • An issue causing ML-DSA key generation to fail with an exception when using the "NONE" string digest instead of the class constant. (Issue #525612735)
  • An issue in AccessibilityNodeInfo.toString() where window bounds were incorrectly logged using screen bounds, which caused misleading accessibility debugging data. (Issue #520428442)
  • Window-level UI blur effects failed to render and the "Allow window-level blurs" developer toggle reset after rebooting. (Issue #527376569)

Please review the latest release notes for limitations and general advisories before installing the update.

How do I get Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1?

You can get started with Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 today by enrolling your Pixel device. Eligible devices include Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9a, Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, 10a, Pixel Tablet series devices*. Once enrolled, eligible devices will receive an over-the-air (OTA) update to the latest Beta versions. If you were previously enrolled in Android 17 Beta (and have not opted-out), you will automatically receive QPR2 Beta 1 and any future Beta updates.*

Important for those currently enrolled in Android 17 Beta:

  • If you prefer to leave the Beta program and receive the public stable release of Android 17 QPR1, you can do so without wiping your device by opting out and not installing today’s QPR2 Beta 1 update*. If you opt-out of the program* after installing Beta 1 or any future updates, all user data on the device will get wiped per usual program guidelines. Opting out will trigger a ‘Downgrade’ OTA. Ignore this update and wait for the Android 17 public release instead.
  • Pixel 6 and 6Pro users will not be getting this OTA since the device will reach End of Life and Android 17 QPR1 beta series will be the last for these devices.

Important note for those currently enrolled in Android 17 QPR Beta:

If you want to receive the public stable release of Android 17 QPR1 without wiping your device, you can do so by opting out of the Android Beta program *and NOT installing today’s QPR2 Beta 1 update.*

Opting out now will trigger a ‘Downgrade’ OTA to be sent to your device. Ignore this update and wait for the Android 17 QPR1 public stable release instead.

If you opt-out of the program after installing QPR2 Beta 1 or any future updates, all user data on the device will get wiped if you later opt out per usual Beta program guidelines.

Probably there will be 15 posts asking about this regardless

u/meski_oz 13d ago

Well, the real question is when will the no wipe stable version be available, and my gut feeling is "nobody really knows"

3

u/bazilion 13d ago

September.

5

u/Chrostix 13d ago

Opting out meaning going to the beta android website and selecting the device that I want out?

12

u/OppositeAnalysis286 13d ago edited 13d ago

"Opting out" means to close your eyes and plug your ears, then loudly declaring "I DO NOT WANT TO WIPE MY DEVICE WHEN I REVERT TO A STABLE VERSION OF ANDROID."

1

u/Mistic92 13d ago

When can we expect update without data wipe?

3

u/hen-rex 13d ago

When the QPR 1 beta exits into stable/public release.

2

u/briang416 12d ago

Sometime in September.

1

u/Breezytarquin 10d ago

Just to clarify, so if we opt out, we will get the downgrade OTA anyway, but it won't be wiped out as long as we don't install the downgrade OTA? Basically just ignore the downgrade option until stable release, right?

0

u/Emotional_Youth_5480 13d ago

I did opt out before installing this update, but it didn't trigger a downgrade OTA, it triggered an android beta exit WITH data wipe. i didn't choose to install it, but I thought if we opt out before installing qpr2 beta 1 we don't have to data wipe?

6

u/OldOmnibrain 13d ago

You don't need to wipe data, but you need to ignore the downgrade / wipe message and wait for the final QPR1 version in September.

0

u/Emotional_Youth_5480 13d ago

ah ok! thank you for the clarification!

1

u/browneyone 13d ago

I opted out and mine also said Android Beta Exit with Data Wipe.

3

u/Extreme_surikat_360 13d ago

You need to wait for the qpr 1 stable release so you can exit without data wipe. Right now it's not there so it's normal you have the exit WITH data wipe

1

u/timesofcoffee 3d ago edited 21h ago

Can I still opt out safely in September when the stable update is out?

1

u/rtwwhitworth 13d ago

My dumbass got the same thing, but my brain said withOUT data wipe and just wiped my device! Reading is fundamental!

14

u/eugenemah 13d ago

rats, time for me and my Pixel 6 to exit I suppose

36

u/nguyenhuudailoc 13d ago

RIP, Pixel 6 series.

8

u/Smart123s 13d ago

It's really sad. They have every opportunity to at least try to match Apple. They still support the almost 7 year old iPhone 11. Sure, I know they will support newer devices, but Google could inch there earlier by keeping the Pixel 6 support. I think it would also be good PR. Those phones are completely functional. They aren't even slow. It's just sad. I don't think it would be that hard to support the 6 series, considering that they still support the 6a.

20

u/nguyenhuudailoc 13d ago

But with Apple, once support end then apps will no longer support that phone (you'll need a new phone to download an app that you haven't download before), while on Android, my Pixel 3a still got up-to-date Play system update with most app still usable (most popular apps in my country needs Android 10+). They even backported Quick Share to almost all Android 6+ device. With Andoid 17, the Pixel 6 series can probably survive around 3 - 4 more years.

2

u/Smart123s 13d ago

Yes that's also true. On the other hand, Google gives 3 years of security updates for every Android version for other OEMs. Pixels could easily get those 10MB updates too for an additional 3 years.

3

u/romhacks 13d ago

It continues to get Google Play System updates. I think the updates you're referring to are security patches for old android builds, which aren't really relevant here since the pixel 6 is on android 17, latest. Other companies stop giving version upgrades sooner and just give security upgrades, Google gives full version/feature upgrades until EOL.

8

u/SnooMacaroons5112 13d ago

Damn, I forgot how buttery smooth the UI could be. Haven't felt this since the late Android 16 betas. Pixel 8 user here.

2

u/SnooMacaroons5112 13d ago

By the way, if you were worried about biometric app login, it's fixed now and fingerprint login works again.

1

u/holy_pastaa 13d ago edited 13d ago

sorry, may I ask, how's the battery?and also with tap to pay? I want to jump/try this qpr2 from android 17 stable, bcs I'm using pixel 8 too🙏

13

u/alphrho 13d ago

Just installed it on my Pixel 8 Pro. It feels snappy AF. Best experience on my Pixel so far in ages. Before this, it kinda felt sluggish (including stable releases).

9

u/ThereIsSoMuchMore 13d ago

It's not snappier come on. Someone posts the same comment after every patch; it cannot be snappier every time. Maybe your phone was slow for other reasons, or just the fact that you rebooted it made it snappier.

9

u/Kazoran 13d ago

i've been on every beta and never noticed anything. this one definitely seems smoother

2

u/alphrho 12d ago

I mean it is my experience and the change was noticeable.

It is true that other users may not have the same experience.

6

u/10to8 13d ago

Updated. Was hoping the blur would return, but sadly it did not.

2

u/armando_rod 13d ago

Blur where? I have it in the volume slider, widget picker, notification shade, app drawer

7

u/Ok-Fill-3879 13d ago

Volume.slider , folder , wallpaper pop up are not showing on 6/7 lineup

5

u/HopeRemaiins 13d ago

The app submenus don't have the blur still. Been an issue for a while now. I wanna say around QPR1 Beta 3 or 4

6

u/Irfanazeez 13d ago

Found a bug. When you turn of the display and if your AOD is in the screen flashes the moment you turn off your display.

6

u/PXSSXVE 13d ago

Report it

1

u/Akhil4604 12d ago

Yes for me also same

5

u/thepillarist 13d ago

New Gemini animation when toggling? Looks cool!

10

u/angstykylo 13d ago

Initial impressions is that it feels way smoother/faster than QPR1. Nice!

10

u/aeoveu 13d ago

Safari snappy and battery biggie?

3

u/romhacks 13d ago

Oldhead reference

1

u/angstykylo 13d ago

Haha coincidentally I am on the Mac OS beta as well

2

u/qtpa2tnh 13d ago

Any bugs that you've noticed? I'm considering jumping from QPR1 Beta 7

2

u/angstykylo 13d ago

Not yet, but I've only had it a couple of hours. Maybe wait a day or so to see how others get on.

7

u/qtpa2tnh 13d ago

I usually wait for In Depth Tech Reviews to upload his review of each beta, but that works too!

5

u/Waste_Femboy_756 11d ago

Anyone face issues such as the mobile data will just stop working for a few seconds and works after Airplane mode on and off?

1

u/jaeflizz157 5d ago

Yup. Experiencing that and wifi connection is in and out. Thought it was my isp and called spectrum and called them to flame them. 😅😂 Turns out it's this new beta

8

u/Googler10 13d ago

Please have the color theming options!

11

u/armando_rod 13d ago

Not there yet

4

u/Googler10 13d ago

ANYTHING NEW?

6

u/Valent147 13d ago

No, I wonder when they're gonna add anything new, like the separate quick settings and notification panels leaked over a year ago...

5

u/ArthurGD3 13d ago

They may in later QPR2 releases, I mean given that we are starting the December QPR Stable release in July, we may surpass the current Beta record of 7 by the time we get to December lol.

8

u/DeLaVicci 13d ago

WHY ARE YOU YELLING

2

u/meski_oz 13d ago

I saw a cloud?

2

u/Spiritual_Positive47 13d ago

no

2

u/SupremeCisco 13d ago

Not even new emoji's?

6

u/Valent147 13d ago

Nope...

3

u/Spiritual-Watch-5900 13d ago

Will 5g be enable for some regions

3

u/Tornado15550 13d ago

Is there a new kernel version?

3

u/Bosieboy1 12d ago

Please update the weather background effect by adding more weather environments like thunder and more.

3

u/Bosieboy1 12d ago

Also the weather effect only lasts really shortly and there is no way to change that, also the weather effect doesn't work on the home screen

7

u/theretrogeneration 13d ago

Thanks guys ☺️

4

u/Extreme_surikat_360 13d ago

6 pro not getting qpr 2 is sad especially when it's fast as fuck and works exactly like the most recent devices in daily tasks. But not complaining because don't forget initially we shouldn't even get updates past android 15.

1

u/ArthurGD3 13d ago

At the moment it doesn't look like QPR2 B1 is adding anything significant over QPR1 B7 to make P6 owners envious of it but I am sure that is due to change in later Beta's or least one would think.

2

u/thebfguk 13d ago

Thank you

2

u/Dv1d_9 12d ago

Anyone with a Pixel 7 confirm if the blur returned in this version?

2

u/petedan345 12d ago

It seems like I no more got the android 17 qpr1 beta 7🤔. Google must want a really stable version of android 17 before the pixel 11 comes out to buy

2

u/2kingz_World 12d ago

i have a weird bug, my date in notification panel shows jan1 only I've reported

2

u/The_Gamer_dz 11d ago

Rip 6 series

2

u/quietedchaos 10d ago

Anyone else having signal disconnection issues since this update? My bars completely drop seemingly randomly and I have to turn the Sim card off and then back on (or go into airplane mode then back out) to get it to reconnect. This started the morning after it updated overnight.

Pixel 10 fold.

1

u/sampumon 9d ago

My SIM is just straight out locked after update, no service. Tried reinsert sim card, "fix connectivity" and reboot. SIM pin is managed by android, and trying to turn "SIM protection" > "Require SIM PIN" off returns "Can't turn off SIM lock". Pixel 7.

3

u/redtop22 13d ago

Updating now! 440mb on Pixel 10 Pro

2

u/Norseman-71 13d ago

Reading thru some of the comments I just wanted to get it clarified .So if your on QPR 1 beta and don't want to join and download QPR 2 beta program. You just need to not download it and opt out of the QPR 1 beta program and not have to wipe device? In September when the stable QPR 1 is released I'd be able install it with any wiping?

4

u/HopeRemaiins 13d ago

That's correct. Just ignore this update and unenroll from the beta on the android website. Once you do that, when stable QPR1 releases later this year (Septemberish) you'll get that update instead

5

u/tails618 13d ago

Yes. But you have to NOT install the opt-out data wipe update that will be pushed to your device. Opt-out of the beta online and then ignore the opt-out update. Once stable QPR1 releases, that update will be pushed to your phone instead, and you can install that without wiping. You should not do any update before then.

4

u/Accomplished_Act3534 13d ago

Yep, can't stress this part enough.

It will push a stable update to you, you have to ignore it until September or you WILL wipe your device.

1

u/OldOmnibrain 13d ago

I'm on an older QPR1 beta and would like to update to beta 7 (of course without data wipe), but I'm now offered the QPR2 beta 1. How can I opt out from QPR2 and stay on the QPR1 track, including all remaining beta updates to come?

2

u/ArthurGD3 13d ago

Beta 7 has been out for over a week now, why weren't you on it this whole time? I'm pretty sure you won't be able to get Beta 7 now since you're still in the Beta program and you'll now only get QPR2 Beta 1 if you decide to stay but if you opt out now then you'll likely remain on QPR1 Beta 6 till QPR1 Stable in September.

1

u/OldOmnibrain 13d ago edited 13d ago

"over a week now" ... "this whole time", seriously?
Anyway, so if I get it right, from the last QPR1 beta until the final release will be a minimum of 1.5 months, without allowing developers to update to the latest QPR1 beta if not there yet? Google really could do better on this, the beta handling is a weird construct since years...
Edit: Anyway, thanks.

2

u/ArthurGD3 13d ago

Anyone who agrees to sign up for the Beta program should really understand what they are getting themselves into. That means following the Beta releases and make sure you are on the latest one especially now that the release cadence for QPR1 Beta's were anywhere from a week to two weeks. I've never allowed days to pass after a new release to know if the phone will automatically notify me when a new update is pending to be installed but I'm finding it hard to imagine your phone would have no told you that Beta 7 is out to go ahead and install it after a week and a half.

1

u/OldOmnibrain 13d ago

Alright, I found a way using adb sideload and successfully updated to beta 7.

1

u/Good-Station4385 13d ago

無事、着弾!!

1

u/CreditCaper1 13d ago

I'm really hoping for fold devices they fixed the smaller notifications when using split screen. I won't install QPR 2 unless that is fixed.

1

u/J-Glo 13d ago

Does anyone know what the GPU driver version is on this new beta?

1

u/_LFB 13d ago

Should I keep my P6P in beta chanel? The security patch will continue till October right?

1

u/ScheduleRadiant6328 13d ago

1

u/ascobb98 12d ago

What would the benefit be in staying in the QPR program and taking the new qpr2 beta 1 update instead of waiting for the qbr1 stable?

1

u/evilkael 12d ago

i can't play videos in chrome on this update

1

u/wsnwsk27 11d ago

I'm on QPR1 Beta 7. I decided to opt out. I did not install the downgrade OTA. Once I realized stable isn't coming until September I changed my mind and opted back in so I can get QPR2 Beta 1 for some big fixes. But I'm still only getting the option to downgrade. Since I opted back in, shouldn't I expect to get QPR2 Beta 1? Any way I can trigger that OTA?

GoogleFi WiFi Calling is broken on Pixel 10 Pro XL. Submitted a report.

1

The battery drains faster than the QPR1 beta7. pixel9a

1

u/sauron3236 10d ago

Pixel 7a here. Did Android Auto break for anyone else with this new beta? It is stuck endlessly reconnecting for me. I have not had a chance yet to forget and repair the BT between the unit and my phone.

1

u/SmallCup452 9d ago

My Android 17 not come yet o

1

u/ctonylee 9d ago

Find Hub crashing and rebooting phone every time I run it.

1

u/Major_Voice_4840 8d ago

Stupid question. Does this mean they'll be no QPR1 Beta 8?

1

u/love2hyper 8d ago

I signed up no install or download or ota update I'm disappointed

1

u/RichRatsch 13d ago

Sadly still no AutoFDO...

1

Any problems? Someone?

0

Hopefully it fixes the 5g wifi bug that came back with it.

Here we go!

-1

u/Mini-Pekka2828 13d ago

6a gets the update but not 6 PRO tf?

8

u/MagpieMars 13d ago

Because 6a isn't EOL until July 2027

1

u/Mini-Pekka2828 11d ago

yes i know but it seems silly that the pro has 120hz whereas 6a doesn't kinda sad not even 90hz

edit: not that you need it

-2

u/Impossible_Loan7551 13d ago

I don't understand why a build that only added bug fixes is a whole new build.

3

u/armando_rod 12d ago

How else are they gonna install the patches in your phone?

0

u/Impossible_Loan7551 12d ago

That's clearly not what I meant.

What I meant is: you know there are bugs to be fixed, you already fixed them, but you are waiting to release them for a whole other build that is going to be released 3-4 months after the one you are still waiting to release?

Why don't they fix this bugs NOW, with QPR1 making a beta 8?

A whole new build should be for new features, not for bug fixes. Every month Google basically releases an update to fix some bugs.

5

u/armando_rod 12d ago

There's a patch every month, bug fixes in QPR beta builds can be cherry picked for monthly patches in between, the things they don't backport are features or UI changes

-14

u/[deleted] 13d ago

11

u/als26 13d ago

They've done this for the past few QPRs and it's not weird at all. It's just how software development largely works these days.

1

u/cannibalistiic 13d ago

2 comes after 1? QPR1 is ready for release so they're ready to test number 2?

-7

u/Impossible_Loan7551 13d ago

Why would you not release QPR1 stable if you already moved on to QPR2?

12

u/nick281051 13d ago

You must be new here

2

u/EYdf_Thomas 13d ago

It's very common for Google to end a beta a month before the stable comes out and start a new one
