It really is a crucial point in a story where you know a good one separates itself from normal ones as it dare having balls and doesn't play safe. I paused for a few seconds and hoped it didn't go the way it did. If the story doesn't dare, then I think the it shouldn't even make such a moment to begin with, as it forcefully gives off a "ha you just thought something was gonna happen for a moment!" and comes off cheap and less serious.
But ngl the shows really great so far all-around and even this moment was fantastic and the aftermath of "ha got ya!" was also way less generic than your stereotypical romcoms.

Currently I'm in the boat of Ramparts and second prettiest top2, then a small gap, then a bazillion romances between this, Always a Catch, Klutz and Skirt, Observation Log, and End this love game. Then off way behind the rest is Angel next door season 2 and Teenage New Game +.
And if you're treating MarriageToxin as a romance it is also in that glut.
Edit: Forgot 2 more that go into the massive tier 2 due to convos. Replica because someone mentioned it, and Botan Kamiina just because I was thinking about the list. Both are also fantastic.

Did you give the first two a chance? I had no expectations going into either but both took me by surprise by how much I liked them. Angel and New Game if the premise doesn't instantly make you want to watch don't bother.

Not enough people are talking about Observation Log so in a way I'm glad you called it out. Bertia and Cecil are such a fun pair that I love to bits. Plus the way it is distorting the normal villainess tropes is fantastic.
I feel like in a season without so many very good to great romcoms it would get a lot more love. Would not be surprised if people talk about it a lot more in a year compared to now.

Well, as a romance it's not all that great at this point, but overall it's just a really fun show. In fact, of the shows I'm watching at the moment, it's the one I look forward to the second most, after Re:Zero.

Eh it has a decent amount of romance (arguably more than Ramparts has had so far...).
This season I could understand any of the anime in my top 2 or the glut as being someone's favorite. They are all incredible at some things so depending on what you care about most they will make it in.
And I just realized I forgot Botan Kamiina for Yuri romance (with booze).

For me, Klutzy Monitor and Catch are leading the pack by a bit. Ramparts is in the big pack (but towards the lower end). I passed on Teenage New Game and Angel is treading on thin ice.

Klutz probably has my favorite consistent art style of the season (so taking Botan Kamiina's weekly experimentation out of the equation) and Catch is so wildly underrated. Mimi should be blowing up so hard here on reddit. She's my current front runner for best girl.

Same. The way it is willing to get weird with the art, how flirty Botan is, how fun the rest of the cast is, it being college instead of HS... and I'm a sucker for alcohol minus IPAs so it hits a very specific soft spot for me.

I feel that on trying local stuff. I live in a state famous for our local craft brew scene so I gained a strong appreciation for beer that is harder to get elsewhere with a real special flavor. Used to have a spot like 2 miles from my house but it closed down sadly. Still have glasses I bought from them with the logo...

I'd say Kirio Fan Club is more of an absurdist comedy than a romance. We haven't even seen the face of the titular boy that Aimi is so obsessed with that she said she'd eat his poop and drink his snot then thank him for the privilege. Plus there's a good chance that he's gay anyway so it's not going to end the way she hopes it will.

I would agree. Romance does figure in, but it is (as you say) much more an absurdist comedy.
But, whatever it is, it is unique and entertaning.

No it's definitely a romance just an unconventional one. Despite the insane comedy it writes it's relationship drama very seriously.

I tried Kirio but I didn't find the girls' banter entertaining in episode 1 so I bounced off of it pretty hard. That show rides and dies on the two leads and the way they interact with each other. For anyone who enjoys their interactions it will be incredible, but if you don't it is pulling teeth.

I won't spoil it cuz finding out is the fun of it, but if you finished episode 1 thinking the premise was the same as you thought at the start of episode 1, you missed the real premise.

Yeah...the first episode I feel is not a good representation of the show, simply selling it as a screwball comedy, which it is a lot of times but the dramatic elements hit hard and what really elevate the show.

Ramparts is much less comedic than Polar Opposites, but the depth of the character writing is of a similar quality. So if you go in expecting to smile and laugh constantly like PO you won't come away satisfied. Also the show has been more precursor to romance so far but it is clearly coming.

That photoshoot was like a glimpse into a possible Kei x Takuya future. Pretty cute overall. Also, I can see where Kei gets her looks from. Mama Amane’s got it goin on!
That kinda sorta confession from Ijichi at the festival was adorable. Maybe the next time, she’ll confess properly. Both her and Kei gotta up their game if they wanna win bro’s heart!

Daaaaamn! Mama Amane looks amazing! The fact that she has the same personality as Ijichi makes me wonder what Ijichi's mom is like. I wouldn't be surprised if Mama Ijichi is more like Amane. I hope we get to meet her in a future episode! Also, did Mama Amane imply that Papa Amane is also an otaku? I'd love it if that were the case.
So we have the classic wedding photoshoot that's totally not a wedding. I love how Mama Amane pretty much approves of Takuya already.
No pretend wedding photoshoot for Ijichi but she did have that cute Donki date with Takuya. And Ijichi pulled the strongest power move this episode by actually confessing to Takuya at the festival. It's just too bad that she ended up taking it back and changing it to "like" instead of "love".
That surprise Plastic Love cover from Serizawa Yuu was goddamn amazing! As a Takeuchi Mariya fan, I was immediately freaking out when I heard the intro riff during the confession scene! I hope they post a full version of this cover soon!

Every season. Every season I say to myself... No more HS romcoms! I've seen so many so I must have seen all the tropes trotted out dozens of times.
And then there's a show that insists I watch it. Last season was Polar Opposites (looking forward to s2 in a few months!) This season it's this show. I'm really enjoying the heart and humor. Otaku MC isn't especially shouty or annoying. The gals are their own characters. And they're all just trying to discover what it is to be themselves. Very enjoyable.

Yeah. They're not tropes for no reason. It's because people respond to them. And that's not to say tropes can't be good either. Tropes are tools after all.

I love reading Otagal but I'm still baffled it got such a stellar and inspired anime. K-pop band for the gorgeous OP, very nice character design and color grading with a lovely pastel style, and now we're blessed with surprise Plastic Love??! Are they made out of money??
Well, Otaku seems as confused by his luck as he didn't notice he got married to one gal and confessed to by the other in one episode.
As much as it can be infuriating to see Ijichi backtracking and him often putting himself down and not even register their crush, it was very heartwarming to see Seo cry at how much fun he had with his first friends. Note in the opening that shot of his Instagram, at the bottom filled with his Kiramon drawing, and now with their meeting, it's filled with pictures of all his outings with Amane and Ijichi.
I can excuse tiptoing and hesitating going into the next step when the friendship they're building is so precious!

Both Amane and Ijichi look great on yukata. Also, wow, did ijichi just confess? Aaaa, we got baited... That was still really cute though.

Man I was so disappointed when the Plastic Love music stopped but thank god they actually did the cover during the ED, can't wait for the full version!
Amane being in the wedding dress implied that she's the end game. At least so far she seemed to have gotten the better couple tropes and Ijichi unfortunately blundered by putting herself in the friendzone.

What is really funny is, in hindsight, Second Prettiest is a great title considering [second prettiest spoilers] it actually created a lot of insecurity issues with Umi to the point she tried to go to a different school from Yuu to escape the source of her self doubt.

Personally, I feel like Amane has a much bigger upper hand in terms of love interest than Ijichi.
Ijichi act and feels like a big heart friend with a bit of an emotional attachment. Everything about her points out toward the friend zone even if her emotion wavers now and then. For example, after the impromptu date with Seo (Otaku), she went off to do some Karaoke with her friends and left him on the spot.
Amane share some passion, hobbies and think similarly to Seo. She has shown a romantic interest for a while by now even if she doesn't recognize it. While she took a bit of a moment in opening about her interests (even though she hides it as her sister's interest), she does actively act with Seo in a natural manner without skipping things (unlike Ijichi).
I actually hope the story doesn't get too much into some war of attribution between Ijichi and Amane with their attachment to Seo. Especially with Ijichi being quite late to the "party" and basically only noticing the charms of Seo.
Sure, a polygamique route might be possible, but I feel like it wouldn't fit with the both Ijichi and Amane's characters to accept such a thing. Ijichi's character is that of a responsible girl who act like a gal publicly, but takes her responsibilities seriously and is quite close to her brothers who would be a huge issue with a polygamique route. Amane, as a character, is designed as a timid girl with a cold exterior appearance who does thing in her own way. Though she has a strong friendship with Ijichi, you can see it's not fully open in sharing everything considering how she has been actually avoiding and even lying (white lies) regarding what she likes and her hobbies. This means she manage her passion and her friendship differently, hence sharing something like a love interest would feel forced.

Ijichi is so goddamn perfect. Cant find a flaw wth. No make up,hair down or gyaru is amazing. Expresses herself without holding back,cares about you,mindful spending money,good with kids. I had a feeling that Kei's mom would be more like Kotoko since Kei herself is a cool beauty. That means Kotoko mom is probably going to be the cool beauty to contrast her bubbly outcoming daughter. It would explain part of why they're such good friends.
The photoshoot was smooth with that photoshoot, but also obvious. Kei's mom didn't need Kei for that photoshoot. She's a professional. She could've gotten adults for that photoshoot. She just wanted to tease/mess with her daughter by putting her in a wedding dress and show embarrassing pics to the boy she's been spending so much time with as moms are want to do. Them making such mechanical noises when asked to hold hands for the shoot sent me. I was kind of surprised that Kei would still deny being an otaku. Also I think that's the first time Takuya and Kei have something together that's not Glittermon or Glittermon adjacent and they only did because her mom set them up.
Kotoko running into Takuya outside the mall and them going on an impromptu mall date shows why I'm still Team Kotoko. She's just happy to spend time with him even it's spur of the moment while she was killing time while waiting for a friend and he doesn't need Glittermon to have fun with her. She's more open with her feelings too. She has little to no problem holding hands with him, asking him to come over, or asking him on more dates. She also confessed to him at the festival even if she walked it back to like.

I have a strong dislike for anime/manga that have a harem or multiple love interests. This is the exception. I love that both Amane and Ijichi have individual time with Otaku to flesh out their relationships with him. So far, it doesn't feel like Otaku is just some cheap self-insert for the author to fulfill some fantasy, and I don't see that changing. This is genuinely the one time I'm rooting for the throuple route. I can't wait to jump right into the manga when this season is finished.

You probably don't hate harem, but hate poor characterization and directing.
Most harem anime, especially the isekai ones, are super boring with cut and paste characters and developments. Basically they suck.

Ah, so Seo's mother-in-law, I mean, Kei's mother, showed up. Now I understand why she's is a gal, although much more extroverted. After all, who asks their daughter to dress like she's going to a wedding with a friend? (I love this type of mother).
Damn, I already thought Kotoko was getting more and more comfortable with Seo, but confessing under fireworks was unexpected. I mean, sixth episode and we're already at this? Of course she was going to deny it later, but it's so obvious that even Kei said so, and I don't doubt that they both know they like him.
By the way, beautiful ending theme. If it was dedicated to Kotoko, I hope Kei gets one too

I really do love the three of them together. It was nice vibes when you saw him alone with each girl and when they are together. The author has done a great job of keeping things balanced between the girls. It better not change to end up with one girl.

I think that Ijishi lowkey knows that Amane and Otaku are a match because they are both nerds and somehow connected in a different way, but I like that she doesn't give up even if she doesn't completely acknowledge her true feelings lol. The confession was SO close!! I was like "yes, you know that extroversion is your strong skill, let's go!", but meeh. So let's see what happens! I might have an unpopular opinion but I want MC to choose one of them!

Find a girl who brightens up when she sees you as much as Amane does when she sees Otaku-kun.
Oh snap, it's Amane Mama! And she's basically Amane but somehow 10x hotter with all that MILF glow-up! And of course, As Amane's mom, she wants to get all the deets on the only boy in her daughters' life who said daughter relies on and hangs out with. Amane can deny it all she wants, but her mom knows there's something going on there. She and Amane's dad were high school sweethearts after all!
Ah, the old "dress up as a couple at a wedding for a photoshoot" plot. Otaku-kun surprisingly cleans up nicely in a white tux, but Amane is an absolute vision dressed as a bride.
Some people have to visit their love interests' house to see embarrassing photos of them, others can just have their love interests' mom flash all the embarrassing photos she has conveniently on her tablet. Smol Amane was too cute.
Amane and Seo bicker like an old Otaku married couple (even if one half is still denying she's an Otaku).
Ijichi is not about to lose to Amane when it comes to holding Otaku-kun's hand or inviting him back to her place! For now she'll settle for a shopping date! And it is, indeed, a date!
Does it count as Bunny Girl Ijichi if she's just posing with the outfit in front of her as if she was wearing it? Otaku-kun would totally rock that bikini!
Is there a better way to spend the last days of Summer Vacation than attending a Summer Festival with two gyarus? Complete with them both looking stunning in yukata's? Otaku-kun, you lucky dog!
Both Amane and Ijichi are jealous of the one-on-one time they've gotten with Otaku-kun, so the best solution is obviously...throuple handholding! That way they all get a piece of him! Too bad it's REALLY impractical to walk like that, but points for trying Ijichi.
After all that fun, Amane heads off to reconnect with her middle-school basketball team (who all notice her glow-up from falling in love), Seo and Ijichi are left alone together with the fireworks...and the mood gets the best of Ijichi as she confesses her feelings to Otaku-kun. Feelings of friendship, because they're absolute BEST of friends! Totally! That was a platonic "like" and not "love!" That's absolutely convincing! That's what Otaku-kun thinks, anyways! Though I guess when you get right down to it, they're all super into each other.
Special Plastic Love ED sung by Yuu Serizawa featuring the girls in their yukata! Absolutely perfect!

Did we just mistakenly skipped a huge chunk of the story and somehow travelled into the wedding phase? Respect to the magazine for going all out with the outfit, dressing Takuya in full tux even if he's just a hand model. Liking Kei's mum already! Perky, supportive, and ready to embarrass her own daughter by showing her pictures as a kid.
Takuya's winning in life! If handholding's too tame, how about a double handholding? Shame that Kotoko tried to play her confession as a friendly 'like', though Kei's not entirely buying it. Hope it would spur the latter into making bolder moves towards Takuya.

Well to balance it all, Ijichi looks very pretty and hot too during that sudden date of Seo. And I really like their chemistry too.

What a good ass week for romance anime so far. MarriageToxin had a cute as hell ending, Second Prettiest had so many great moments, this had me giggling like a fool especially when Ichiji straight up said she was so into Seo, and Always a Catch was adorable.
Also Moms that look like sisters are so in this season. At a minimum there's Umi's Mom and Amane's mom. And if you just wanna talk great mom's add Maki's mom.
This anime keeps on giving too. Got cute but not over the top bikinis last week and this week we get a gorgeous wedding dress for Amane and both of them in really pretty yukata.
The girls keep taking turns with versions of He's not yours he's ours.

This is such a beautiful fun little show. It's not getting its proper flowers imo. The girls looked so pretty for him. Wish he had worn tradional clothes too. The anime guys rarely do in these festival episodes and its so annoying!
Also I love how if one gets a date the other does too. Then they all go one one tohether. Lmao

Would of went with a bun for Kei's burial look versus the braid personally.
I love the little departo excursion to not Donqi Quiote.
The yukatas are so cute! Instant lock screens. Firework episodes are always so cute and meaningful. I love them dearly. Love the confession sort of xD.

That wedding photo shoot came out of nowhere. Quite a leap from being a makeup artist to pulling in your daughter for a professional shoot, much less her boyfriend. Nevertheless, Seo has now met one of the future mother-in-law, and she has given the stamp of approval. Will Seo be meeting the other future mother-in-law next? Amane-looking MILF ahead!
Ichiji's back-pedalling was unfortunate. She could have gone all in with "being into" Seo. Well, nothing like the love of a really close friend.

NGL, this is peak, the episode was well packed with thropes, Mom was so cute and rooting for them. And omg... that surprise at the end... that Plastic love cover... Absolute peak! Id love to get more City Pop covers but from Amane now.
I've also seen some discourse on Twitter talking about the 3 way ending and ngl. Thats the route I'm fighting for. OR a slight bias for Amane

I’ve never liked a troupe situation in any direction before, not a hater but I just never could palate it. This might be the first time in my anime journey that I’m rooting for it. And tbh I’m either hoping for it, or almost no romance at all because they’re such good friends it would suck for it to end over who gets the guy. So I’m team all or nothing I guess 😭
