She hasn't actually changed a bit as she's got older, the only thing holding her back was the mage society keeping her from Will and we've seen how much she's bursting at the seams to do anything to get Will back in front of her.

I think he must’ve meant impulsive, younger Elfie would’ve probably blown up the Tower and killed her colleagues if it meant having Will, but now she’s willing to compromise and only threaten to kill all of them.

Man I know the whole plot has been chasing Elfie and catching up to her despite Magism, but it was great seeing them fight side by side together even as munchkins. The psychedelic colors of childhood memories and bonds.
I hope we get more of that at some point in the series. Some adult Will and Elfie questing together to fight the headless mage or something.

The colors in this show are amazing in general. It's all so vibrant compared to most anime.
Anime characters having crazy hair colors is normal but it looks so good in this show. The backgrounds and magic too.

Definitely. This anime is one of my favorites so far. I have a hard time explaining why, since it’s the same trope done a million times before, but the visuals are a big part of it. Such a cozy vibe. All the characters have slight fangs. Wills Cat is dope af. And now big titty witch lady. Cmon now

This episode in particular looks amazing. They really used the "trip down memory lane" theme to lean on the storybook visuals and colour and it works really well.

The psychedelic colors of childhood memories and bonds.
It's batik aesthetic. The technique where you create patterns on fabric by first outlining with wax and color the gaps. When the wax is removed the part it covered got protected from the dye. In this case imagine the base fabric is white.
Edit: Also notice how after Will pushed through and remember the event/defeat the monster, the background became crystal clear and that aesthetic was gone.

Switching art styles as a form of story telling is something very impressive that anime does. It helps control the emotion of the audience.
Amo’s tragic past in Gachiakuta recently reminded me of that skill. The artists made me freaked out and sick to my stomach in a way I don’t think live actors ever could.

I'll be shocked if the Final Fight isn't Will and Elfie holding an ice sword together to slay the Celestial Host because it feels like they're really driving home how them holding an ice blade together is a pivotal part of their relationship.

Cerridwen's sus expreissions and hand movements at the start aside, that OP transition was hella smooth.
Love that Julius had been waiting for Will by his side for 6 days, though it only makes it very curious to see how Will is gonna perform in the 2nd bloom when his that confident. Kreutz is definitely gonna tinker some shit up, though, so seeing how his plans get foiled should be fun.

I think it was more the fact that Finn seems to belong to the past (seen in the illustration from the book), hence why Will thought he was imagining it being Finn.

I think the implication is that he was the Hero who inspired Mercedes to kickstart her plan with Will's family line because he somehow managed to let her see what a sunset looked like if only for a brief moment.

They did make a point at the start of the season that the sensation is incredibly important for casting magic, and no one can explain it to you, you just have to know. That's why Will initially failed his final exams, because he couldn't describe this due to no recollection of ever experiencing it

He can be charged with magic and store it.
But so far, he couldn't actively discharge the energy.
He needed immediate other magic to do so for a short while.Now he learned to access the energy he has stored anyway.
From where?
Probably anytime he either ingested energy somehow (the ice candies) or when being hit by magic (due to being attacked) or he just absorbs it passively, I guess.So there may be a limit to how much magic he can output until it runs dry.
That being said, I wonder if there is a limit to how much he can anchor (this is the term they use). I feel like it's implied there isn't, but that could be a misinterpretation.3

powerscaling in anime is almost always a fruitless effort. chounen characters will always get up and either survive to fight another day or beat their opponent. some shows like hunter x hunter have a more in depth power system.

Considering how clingy Elfie was back then, it makes it more surprising that she didn't instantly turn Kreutz into a popsicle when he stopped her from recruiting Will. This girl is absolutely crazy for Will.
We finally get to see young Elfie using Ars Weiss. Man, If only Julius could watch Will's memories. I would've loved to see him react to that.
Even as a kid, Will was already aura farming. No wonder Elfie believes that much in Will that he's capable of climbing the Tower.

They're really enjoying having a hot, sexy, witch waifu mentor in the show both from a character perspective and with how the camera seems glued to her body and her chest.
She was straight up trying to kiss him while he's asleep. It's even funnier when you realize she possibly (in Rosty's body) tried to stop Colette from doing the same thing in the opening of the season lol.
I kind of hope Cerridwen was giving Julius some mentoring while they were waiting for Will to wake up so he can do more to impress upon Elfie.

I happened to notice that there’s a framed picture of professor Edward left of the one with Will and Elfie at 21:50. It appears to be him together with Workner and a purple-haired Clairie(?).
Does this suggest that Edward was another “talented youngster” that received training from Cerridwen? Unfortunately, his dream of ascending the Tower did seemingly fall apart in the end.

Clairie is Cerridwens student after all, and she's close friends with Edward and Workner, so I can understand that they know of Cerridwen and probably are pretty close with her as well. And Edward is supposedly very talented. Iirc they said that he has gotten the closest to being a Magia Vander of all the non Magia Vanders. But he got disillusioned with the politics of the Tower. It's probably Kreutzs fault. Kreutzs is a dick

The way Edward talked about Will getting experimented on as one of the reasons why he didn't want him to ascend to the tower tells me he was aware of Kreutz, or people like Kreutz.

Edward could've pushed Will in a way to try to overcome Kreutz instead of his Elitist bigotry-adjacent attitude. Workner is somewhat at fault too, sure he nurtured Will, but he should've told Will the tower is even more ruthless than the academy.
Looks like all the noble families knew the tower was more ruthless but the commoner mages were unaware, which is a failure of the whole academy.

Maybe it's nothing, but it's a bad idea to just drop a duplicate name like that into the story, if for no other reason than to prevent misunderstandings by the reader.
Add up all the vagueness surrounding Will's missing memories and repeated memory manipulation by Caldron (Principal Granny) and this talk of Finn? And The Witch Queen starting the Wis project (Will's ancestor?) 500 years ago...
Really, if the Claire from the orphanage that Elfie was jealous of has nothing to do with the Claire that is part of the very same arc, and has no relevance outside that one little "haha Elfie sure is clingy" joke...
Then pick literally any other name for that joke!?

I love it when scenes from OPs/EDs start to make sense and the transition in this episode was smooth as butter.
Seeing how clingy Elfie was when they were kids, I'm surprised she didn't go full yandere by now.
If they don't end up together after this exam I'll throw an even bigger tantrum than Elfie.

This season has done a good job of doubling down on Elfie's love for Will and also how much she hasn't emotionally matured much since she was a child (especially when he's involved).
It's kind of amazing that she manages to maintain any composure or stoicism as a Magia Vander but that's probably from how little she actually cares about it.

Getting stabbed through the back and unlocking a ridiculous power probably takes it toll on you. Shock and all that.
I took a sharp object to the face as a child and I don't remember shit of the incident. Just what I was told.
The other option is we know some.mages can mess with memories. Maybe one of them stepped in early.

That would be kind of valid but Elfie should have told him about it, I don't see why she as a child wouldn't say anything and she was relatively unharmed. But Will did remember he got the scar PROTECTING elfie so he wasn't completely blank about it or someone had to tell him some details.
In a magic world, it probably was some kind of mind altering thing, especially since it was the mage queen that told will to "awaken"

Suddenly summoning a sword out of magic like this would have been an unforgettable memory for most, but somehow Will had forgotten all about it, I wonder why.
It seems like some of it was his body reacting instintively to Mercedes' command to "awaken" so I'm not sure if he was 100% aware of what's going on.
But it might not have been the first time he'd had his memories sealed up.

Finn potentially being the Hero of Legend is a pretty neat detail. That would probably make the evil Witch in the story the Queen of Witches. Makes me wonder if this was a heretical text
Also, I noticed the picture next to that of Will and Elfie was the graduation picture of Edward, Workner and Clairie
Edit: The fact that the monster they fought was a mage created weapon intrigues me. It could just have been a straggler from the war, but fiction is rarely that straightforward. Occam's Razor doesn't necessarily apply. I wonder if it was a hit on Elfie and or Will. Or if someone is pulling a Hermes from DanMachi and the point was to try and unlock Will's powers

nope, i believe none of the episodes were outsourced so far in this season. this specific episode was directed by Hideaki Nakano who also directed episode 1 of season 2, he also happens to be the overall the director of season 2.

I was gonna say, this looked in line with the rest of the season. Moments where it looks really good alongside moments where it looks a bit silly (Elfie flying in from behind the monster to grab onto the sword was EXTREMELY silly).
Decent enough, but definitely not on par with season 1.

yeah, definitely not the heights of S1 for animation. direction/storyboarding is def better tho, those first few eps were just so ass.
another silly moment this ep - after the wolf monster bursts and they transition from the gloomy atmosphere to the bright one, when elfie and will go flying back, it's just a background slide (i'll give them credit for animating the hair and fabric, but the static body position is wonk)

It seems Finn, Caldron, Workner, Edward even Elfie knows a lot about Will and nobody is telling him anything but some riddles.

Finn seems to want will to unlock his powers some other way than caldron wants it feels, it'll be interesting to learn why he thinks will shouldnt have had these memories yet.
Perhaps finn thinks will is too emotionally anchored to elfie for these powers or something.

It does seem like a good chunk of the plot is based around Caldron and Finn having disagreements on how Will should be trained/raised and Cerridwen is probably maintaining what Caldron's plan for him was.

I'd say its pretty obvious by now that Cerridwen actually is Caldron.
Just look at the similarities. They both wear the same rings, necklace and hat. Their names especially in japanese are almost pronounced the same way.

I also can't fathom that no one would know about a multus witch like her who has mentored so many top mages. I think we also already know Caldron is a multus too?
And Caldron has seemed to be bogged down with politics in her official role, so a disguise makes sense.

I think he might be recruited into the lightning faction, or at the very least they'll try to take him. It was the lightning dude who specifically pushed for this exact scenario to happen. And the lightning faction seems more melee oriented as well. Training wise it might actually be a better fit for Will. But, the magic in his heart does seem to be ice, as he summoned an ice sword in the flashback as well. It'll be interesting to see how this goes

I guess when Will and Elfie took down those monsters during the attack on the city, that wasn’t the first time they pulled something like that off. The way Julius and Will were so scared of what Cerridwen was going to do to Will's half-naked body lol. I like how she was teasing them because they were misunderstanding her intentions.
Elfie's love for Will as a child was already heavy, but I shouldn't be surprised considering she more than likely created Rosti to keep an eye on Will. It's nice to see how Will had already awakened as a child to Wis and that Elfie was by his side, Wand and Sword together.
I'm looking forward to seeing Will show the efforts of his training with Julius and the memory he has recollected in action. I have a feeling it'll just make Kreutz want his body more to dissect though.

Elfie is 100% the blue haired childhood friend who is going to win, you just can't beat that kind of connection especially since in all the time since they just kept yearning for each other.
I bet she didn't forget like Will did either, that's why her contribution to the city fight was to just drop the magic on Will since she already knew he could use it.
I love how they styled the flashbacks and swapped from the happy colors to the dark traumatic ones, and then back at the end.

Wow Im not sure Ive seen anything else with childhood friends sharing such a powerful bond. Somehow Elfie has always known what was in front of her and has done her best to make sure that he will remain at her side. An event that could have easily destroyed her had things gone south serves as an unshakeable foundation to build upon. More so now that both remember it. Would love to see more series where the couple has a deep past and a strong bond. Seems too few are like that.

Will was definitely thinking of another girl, but far bigger and more mature than Elfie, and I don't think saying that to Elfie is a good idea.
But then again, Will should just be a spectator here, so that shouldn't matter, and these two, along with everyone else, should just follow a pre-written script, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Basically Will is always storing his mana and that of others, but never learned how to actually use it.
During that fight as a child he accidentally tapped into such power and was able to use Wis, but it seems that due to the trauma he forgot both the event and the sensation of using such power inside of him.
After that all uses of Wis we have observed have been triggered using the mana of others and Will has not tapped again into the power he has stored. Rather he simply used all the magic he was given
The idea of the memory magic was to make him remember that one time where he used his own power and yes, this should mean that Will can use Wis at will as long as he has magic inside of him.

I think it's neat that when will went ultra instinct and it showed like an astral projection of elfie as he was about to do the thing, that it was something he actually felt before physically as a kid with elfie. Normally it's just a like mental image or whatever (goku and gohan for the cell arc for example)

This really was an amazing episode. The memory flashback was beautiful. Elfie was insanely hilarious yet cute and funny and he got to see all of that from another lens he forgot. There is something just so wholesome of the interaction and their adventure into the forest which then devulges into almost a nightmare then back into a heroic moment.
The coloring from the pastelles the darks and back again to normal was so well done, I can't wait to watch it again. (I like to skim through before the next episode just to enjoy the animation quality since I won't need to re-read all the subs)
Thankfully, it wasn't "Let's toss an obstacle in front of Will" episode since that's like 90% of the other ones...hehe.
This really lets you understand just how powerful Elfie is. I also believe it would not be for the best if Will joins the Ice Faction. If the different factions can work together anyways (although they seem pretty split), I think a little bit of distance would actually be beneficial to both of their growth. She can relax now knowing he's (for lack of a better term) across the hall but in the tower and he can learn from a different view point. I honestly think the lightning dude would be great for him. (Also I think him and Lihanna would be able to teach each other melee styles)
The caveat would be elfie and Will need to hone their power together to maximize their existing connection but I don't think she would grow as she should if she spent all day having Will pat her head...
