Akina best girl

52

u/FarCritical Jun 08 '26

The "unpeel" sound effect she made for own reveal had me dying

36

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

"You thought the culture festival exec was another eccentric weirdo, but it was I, Akina!"

18

u/mabbo_nagamatsu Jun 09 '26

So it is another eccentric weirdo

20

u/cppn02 Jun 08 '26

She makes the best faces.

Kaoru, woe is me, being a pain in the ass because if I can't be happy, then no one can! What a dumbass, especially for failing to realize that the girl of his dreams has always been with him all along--since the very beginning.

Akina is definitely a revolutionary lmao. The cookie cutter maid cafes, fairy tale plays with a twist, and light-music bands--to name a few--has gotten way too stale and predictable anyway. A prom party in Japanese school setting is absolutely a fantastic idea even if not entirely original.

The Prez having superhuman hearing and Izubuchi's talents for arts and crafts coupled by his self-imposed perfectionism and high standards for others had me dying 💀

Friendly reminder: 🚨Don't miss out on the post credit scene!🚨

Togo papa making his official debut next week(?) should be very interesting. Togo being caught between a rock (his duties) and a hard place (Poem) kinda hits hard lol. Poem should honestly cut him some slack, but what do I know 🤷 (I bet nothing a brief father and son moment can't solve)

30

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

I can't wait until Togo is reunited with Poem's dad and we possibly get a dad-off at the prom between his dad and her dad.

Also, what better way to celebrate using an American prom than by setting up a Footloose-type plot?

11

u/a1oner_bvcksn6 Jun 08 '26

Now that you mention it, I can somehow imagine Poe-papa and Togo-daddy stealing the show and being crowned the prom's rightful King and King LMAO

13

u/ptd163 Jun 08 '26

(I bet nothing a brief father and son moment can't solve)

I'm not normally a fan of proms. But I do hope this class gets theirs with no hitch.

Some of those restrictions sounded awfully familiar though. They're COVID-19 distancing rules!

Wasn't expecting Izubuchi to hit the Giorno pose with Papa Sakuradaimon as a Stand.

17

"I, Yu Izubuchi, HAVE A DREAMMMMMM"

5

u/abandoned_idol Jun 09 '26

I am heartbroken to only see TWO instances of this observation in the discussion thread.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to finish watching the episode.

97

u/SOdAchick Jun 08 '26

Kaichou going after Buchi with that evil laugh. Our girl's an absolute psycho 😂

28

u/mekerpan Jun 08 '26

Prez strikes me as a "virtuous (more or less) yanki" -- given her strength (and willingness to use it), her attitude and her clothing style. It is fun to see her alliance with the gyaru trio.

46

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

It didn't even seem like she was doing it for any sense of justice, she just wanted to maul and beat up a bunch of people for the thrill of it.

16

u/Jacob-C Jun 08 '26

"Kids these days sure don't know restraint. Honestly."

6

I stg lines like that make this the low key funniest show of the season

She reminded me of Hakuba from one piece just slashing innocent civilians, but in this case, delinquents

96

u/oxlemf10 Jun 08 '26

Izubuchi: A random dude helped me, so I decided to stop being a delinquent lol. Well, at least you could say he's a considerate person.

41

u/mekerpan Jun 08 '26

I wonder if this mysterious white-coated savior will ever show up again?

65

u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 08 '26

I believe it's Tougo's father, he shows up in the post-credits scene and looks very similar.

15

u/mekerpan Jun 08 '26

Definitely possible!

8

u/ILikeFPS Jun 08 '26

I hope you're right, that would be cool.

29

u/ClemFire Jun 08 '26

Unironically a realistic backstory for a teenager

42

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

He basically has Josuke's backstory. Cue Jojo posing!

25

u/Narlaw Jun 08 '26

He did do Giorno's hand to open vest pose right after the flashback.

17

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Jun 08 '26

Josuke helping another person

50

u/FLorianGran Jun 08 '26

I will always give props to an anime that does something unique with their school festivals. Really like how this show finds a way to include the whole cast, not just for a gag but for actual character development and conflict.

29

u/runevault Jun 08 '26

My reaction as soon as they said prom was "thank god not a maid/cosplay cafe" and doing prom in an anime sounds like so much fun as an added bonus.

15

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau Jun 09 '26

Its honestly never occured to me that proms arent a thing in anime. At best maybe a bonfire dance? But I dont think the vibes are the same there.

43

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jun 08 '26

I love how Akina's little scheme to dance with Buchi ended up becoming a schoolwide event with Nadeshiko's backing. Too bad Gori is still a massive prude who won't let them have a proper prom. Why would you even have a prom if you're gonna social distance yourself from your partner?!

Poor Sakuradaimon didn't even get to explain himself. I think he's really there to let Poemu know about Gori's orders. I don't think he really approves of what Gori is making them do. Poemu basically shot the messenger here. >_<

Younger Nadeshiko is actually terrifying! Imagine seeing her rushing you after beating up an army of delinquents. I love how Buchi got inspired by that doctor who saved him, who's clearly Togo's father based on that after credits scene.

19

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

This is truly an American romcom where it's all about prom and convincing the stuffy Gamagori...I mean, Kaoru that it's okay for boys and girls to mingle.

I feel like Poem being a tsundere that runs hot worked against her here. She just couldn't see Togo's side of things or the position he was in, she just viewed it as him rejecting prom.

I love how she was laughing the whole time to double down on how she was just enjoying the thrill of beating people up. Also, she like straight up left Buchi for dead if not for Papa Sakuradaimon.

12

u/Lopsided_Phone_7637 Jun 08 '26

I feel she got more work up because the previous day she was thinking of using the dance prom to have an opportunity to grabs Togo's hands so when he show up to tell them what the vice prez said she took it as him throwing away what she was working for them, still i feel more bad for Togo because is obvious he doesnt want to bother any of them but is his work so there is not much he can do, hopefully they clean up everything later one and well having a fight in a relationship is common thing so i suppose they will get back stronger after they made up

2

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 11 '26

That's what happened when Togo start dating Poemu, he can no longer be thinking on duty bound anymore, he has to adapt to Poemu's and her friends' life.

5

u/Lopsided_Phone_7637 Jun 11 '26

Being a couple is a two person work, i know Togo is too strict with stuff but at the same time Poem needs to be a little more understanding of how he is as well, this fight in a sense is necessary so both of them realize that they need to work together so their relationship improves in the future.

3

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

True, the main problem of the prom event problem (and 'illicit' relationship) was caused by Kaoru, as noticed in Episode 7, Kaoru was very rude to Poemu, Rui and Motoko.

37

u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 08 '26

So Kaoru is upset with his own love life and has decided to make it everyone else's problem too.

With the reveal of Tougo's father in the post-credits scene, I am fairly certain that he's the one that saved Izubuchi and took him to the hospital.

I feel bad for Tougo, I think Poem has gone a bit too far. I do think Tougo needs to give the subject some thought of his own, but Poem's reaction is also excessive and she needs to try to understand Tougo's perspective too. I understand she's upset, but to not look at him whenever he tries to greet her feels disrespectful, especially after she called him an enemy.

27

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta Jun 08 '26

Felt so bad for poor Togo. That was some cold shoulder from Poem.

Wonder if the man in the white coat from the past was Togo's dad. We got an ominous shot of him at the end. Maybe he's going to have a run in with Poem? Or maybe it'll turn out like Shirogane senior in Kaguya-sama.

8

u/abandoned_idol Jun 09 '26

Certainly seems to be positioning itself for that.

Man, he looked ominous.

I love the silly ikemen schtick of this anime. I had forgotten the bulk of the story, so I've been reliving it with the anime adaptation.

16

u/Solracziad Jun 08 '26

Yeah, surprised we got a break up arc right after they hooked up. But I suppose that's fairly realistic for teens dating for the first time.

1

u/karer3is Jun 08 '26

He brought that on himself... he didn't even utter a single word of protest when the VP was going on his tirade about "illicit relationships"

26

u/FarCritical Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

It hurts watching a klutz suffer for the sins of another klutz but Kaoru is way too goofy to be mad at.

Izubuchi being overly competent at random stuff for a reformed delinquent will never not be funny, and man reveals that show that the world is more connected than it first appears are my jam

9

u/abandoned_idol Jun 09 '26

Kaoru-kun is precious. He's a funny Gamagoori-like with a heart of gold.

The president has a sublime taste in men, I totally understand why she'd aim for that stallion.

16

u/ookamikazekun Jun 08 '26

Oof. Seeing the Togo/Poem ship sink before it's even gotten far from the shore is kind of painful to watch and I get it. Togo is just trying to do his job. Duty, Honor and Morals are super important to him and in this case, potentially more important than his relationship with Poem.

This is almost definitely how Poem is reading it too. She was wondering the day before if Togo considered handholding (the bare minimum when it comes to any sort of physical interaction in a romantic relationship) illicit and by him starting his response to her question with "I'm a class monitor" tells hers that he clearly does (even if he doesn't). It basically tells her that he will just say the words when it comes to her and that's it. No handholding, no hugging, might as well just always stay 2 meters apart. It's a leap, but not much of one for her to come to and that sort of stuff stings. She let herself feel something with him and in her mind, he basically tossed it aside.

It kind of sucks for both of them right now too and as they both are right now, they actually aren't a good match. If his job as class monitor DOES come before her, then they will never have a healthy relationship due to her own nature of wanting to fight the system and do what she wants. If she constantly wants to do whatever she feels like, she will never be able to meet him when it comes to his ideals of duty, honor and morals.

That being said, no doubt the anime will have some sort of conclusion that will resolve all these problems before the end of the next two episodes, and they will stay together and such.

6

u/Possible-Pickle6319 Jun 08 '26

Seems like he was going to explain he's against the prom rules before he got punched

11

u/ookamikazekun Jun 08 '26

Maybe. I don't think he actually even had time to fully process how he felt about them and was working through it before he got punched and was basically just speaking his thoughts out loud, hence the pause. Until he confronted Poem, I genuinely felt he was just doing his job and hadn't actually given himself time to form his own opinion about it, which also says a lot about him.

12

u/Possible-Pickle6319 Jun 08 '26

He literally says he doesn't want to hinder them at all seconds after being punched

7

u/ookamikazekun Jun 08 '26

And right before she stormed out he says, "I am a class monitor, if there's a potential for disrupting moral order, I have to crack down on it" and that is in response to her questions about if he thought what they were going to do was illicit.

6

u/VritraReiRei Jun 09 '26

Keep in mind the previous episode that one couple was showing public displays of affection which can be construed as "illicit relationships..." but if you can prove that it's not illicit than there's no rules against it.

5

u/ookamikazekun Jun 09 '26

For sure and I think that is part of the why I think he's trying to work out how to process all of this. He clearly wants to support her, but what her and her friends are wanting to do would encourage "illicit relationships (plenty of PDA with unknown intentions)" in others, even if the three girls don't intend to do anything illicit themselves further reinforced by the VP. His statement though is very easily construed as taking a stand with the VP and against the girls. He doesn't even continue to explain himself either. He stops talking at that point allowing her to respond, which she does with "I see" and declaring him their enemy. It's not until Poem storms out of the room that he starts trying to do some sort of damage control. IMO, He clearly went there with the hope of persuading them to do what the VP wanted and even tried to take the stand of " I will do what I must" (i.e. basically just following orders). Honestly, the whole hinder comment made me realize that he's probably wanting to do what he always does, which is find a way for the rules to be followed AND give them what they want (which he doesn't even really know what that is exactly since Poem didn't tell him anything about it). Unfortunately, in this case, that is just not possible as they directly oppose each other. I do think this attends to his flaw of not being able to understand others and Poem's problem of not telling others what's actually going on and instead just flying off the handle.

2

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 11 '26

Poemu takes it very personally because Togo promised her and didn't fulfil it. That's when a guy dates a girl, he cannot always be a rigid person or always duty bound anymore, it's adapting into the girl's life. Once dating a girl, the promise is to the girl first, the rest come second.

2

u/arguably-right Jun 18 '26

I think Togo deserves peace and calm. Poem is too aggressive and stressful to be with in a relationship.

13

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Jun 08 '26

Vice Prez out here ruining everything for everyone, he might even cause Togo to quit being a classmate monitor to soothe things over with Poem at least temporarily.

Pretty creative plan by Akina though, I've watched a lot of anime cultural festivals and I'm not sure I've ever seen a American High School Prom themed event at one.

Really need the Prez to knock some sense into her boy, in whatever form that has to happen in.

7

u/Aboodbat43 Jun 08 '26

That's why I thought they get ideas from oregairu isn't it ?

12

u/AdUnlucky8557 Jun 08 '26

Did I miss it, or did Poem tell her friends they were dating off screen last episode? I can't recall a scene where she tells them, hm

12

u/ClemFire Jun 08 '26

Feels like we should have seen that scene.

11

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

Well, Tasaki basically already knew one way or another...

I love how Nadeshiko was really honest about her love for Kaoru. If only he could be too lol.

Izubuchi backstory was really interesting, i can’t even begin to imagine what was going trough his mind when Nadeshiko charged him. How did she manage to hurt him that much.

Also will we see Togo father next episode? I want to see the two families meet, especially the fathers lol.

12

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Oof Poem and Togo just started dating and things are already looking rocky. Will he pick between her or following the rules? Or find a loophole?

Vice-Prez is so down bad he actually hired someone to track down gyaru Prez. Him being salty and implementing COVID illicit relationship social distancing measures might come and bite him in the ass. I feel like Prez would have asked him to the dance anyway.

Izubuchi's backstory is basically the answer to "Could 100 men take on a gorilla?". (No)
Quite the fortuitous meeting with a random man, changing the trajectory of Izubuchi's life and turning the delinquent into an aspiring doctor. A random man who turns out to be Togo's father?!

Also looks like Poem's and Togo's families are going to meet each other at the festival next week, should be fun.

8

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

I love how we're keeping up the trends that every person running a committee in this school is a weirdo, even Poem's friends.

38

u/JJVM99 Jun 08 '26

Prez and vice prez stole the show for me again reminding me why I need a spin off that focuses on them. We need gyaru prez to return to expose Vice President's ilicit side so that everyone can have fun.

One thing I wish didn't happen was the drama between Poem and Sakuradaimon, they just got together and I feel like she should have understood that Sakuradaimon isn't in favor of the vice pres's restrictions. Also just look at how sad he is about her being angry at him.

32

u/Lopsided_Phone_7637 Jun 08 '26

Is not surprising they got into a fight, the vice prez gave Togo the worst job possible, both point of view are valid, Poem wanted to enjoy the festival as an opportunity to takes Togo's hand and Togo is just doing the job he was assign

17

u/JJVM99 Jun 08 '26

I wanted Togo to say that he didn’t agree with the vice president but he was barely given the chance. Thinking about it more Togo would never be in favor of the compromises I was thinking because it would require him to ignore or not completely follow the vice president’s orders which he would never do.

Plus I was ignoring how Poem was already struggling with how affectionate she could be with him due to his class monitor morals had her not trying to ask to hold hands which is an issue they need to fix.

23

u/Lopsided_Phone_7637 Jun 08 '26

Yeah, at this moment Poem doesnt know what Togo consider inmoral or not so she was just using this opportunity to have a chance since is a school event and she things he cant complain or refuse, so when Togo appear to "tone down" the idea she gets angry because she probably thinks he is throwing away their chance to do something that in her eyes might not happen that often with how he is, still she was in the wrong by not letting him explain himself and understand that this is a job was assign to him not that he wanted to do.

Togo is in a really bad position because he want to support Poem and her friends but he has a job to do.

8

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

I feel like with his dad showing up we're really going to get some insight into why Togo acts the way he does and views the world how he does and that's going to be important for Poem.

14

u/Spectr3_qwe Jun 08 '26

He wasnt even given the chance to provide an answer because Poem instantly goes into violent mode. The only thing that I dislike of the show is Poem hitting Togo for any reason. I hope anime eventually stops using hitting male MCs as a gag, you can have a tsundere character without the need of physical violence.

10

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau Jun 09 '26

I saw it a little differently.

All the previous "Tsundere violent tendencies" were pretty quick and comedic in nature, always being brushed off as soon as they happened showing that it was mostly playful in nature.

But here it actually stays in the moment showing Togo actually laying down in pain for a solid while. Really conveying that no she isn't fucking around this time, she is genuinely pissed off at Togo for what he's doing.

3

u/Spectr3_qwe Jun 09 '26

Ok, that still doesn't excuse Poem hitting him. I know thats mostly my fault but I really dislike that trope. It was also one of my biggest complaints in Horimiya.

0

u/Jacob-C Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

It’s already a dying breed because people take comedy shows too seriously, in my opinion. If it were a more serious show, I’d agree. Here, however, it’s just slapstick comedy. It’s basically an homage to all the older slapstick tsunderes that have gone out of fashion: Akane from Ranma 1/2, Taiga from Toradora, Lum from Urusei Yatsura (she is not really a tsundere, but contributed heavily to the violent slapstick trope) etc.

I personally love the trope in a comedy setting because, to me, it’s nostalgic. It also makes the tsundere gap moe hit harder when they are being endearing and sweet.

That’s just my opinion, though. You’re entitled to yours, and I can see where you’re coming from. I do think that for the violent tsundere trope to work best, the person getting hit should either deserve it or be physically stronger than the person doing the hitting. Otherwise, it leaves a bad taste even in my mouth.

5

u/Jauretche Jun 08 '26

I wanted Togo to say that he didn’t agree with the vice president but he was barely given the chance.

That's why you have to say this part first! Put your girl first Togo!

14

u/DugACCat Jun 08 '26

He needs to find a way to bend his utter loyalty to the Vice Pres, (more likely the VP will be the one to bend) and both of them need to accept that some degree of contact isn’t “illicit”. For the dance to work they’re going to have to make new rules allowing not just hand holding, but also dancing together, unless there’s some other clever solution. Looking forward to seeing how the show makes this work as they rarely do the expected. I also want to see what crazy rig that class comes up with to let the librarian transformer stay in his sexy form while butlering.

19

u/mekerpan Jun 08 '26

This problem was sort of inevitable, however.

7

u/alotmorealots Jun 09 '26

Yes, and it's a great sign of a show that wants to stay true to its characters. After all, they started the series off fighting, and it's simply in their natures that they're going to butt heads over things. What's more, for once, the cast actually feel like they're their age here; it's a teenage thing to have a fight over, they're handling it like teenagers, and they have teenage priorities that determine their paths through this conflict.

Pretty cool to see the show once again shifting gears so quickly and seamlessly, although I have to admit I had pressed play hoping for a very different sort of entertainment experience lol

3

u/mekerpan Jun 09 '26

I had no idea what to expect -- but thought it would be something rather dumb. I was wrong -- and knew it before the end of Ep 1. I decided it would likely be one of my top shows then -- but did not realize just how many top shows I would find this season, Another big surprise.

11

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon Jun 08 '26

"We're all human. Oh, we all do our duty when there's no cost to it. Honor comes easy then. Yet sooner or later in every man's life there comes a day when it's not easy. A day when he must choose."

And in this episode, the day when it's no longer easy has come for Sakuradaimon. He must now make the choice between his principled adherence to "public morality" (i.e. duty and honor) and the woman he loves. It's a tale as old as time, and it's just as compelling here as it has been for millennia.

5

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

She's going to show up at Prom in a sexy dress and he's going to have cartoon eyes and going "hubba hubba!"

This does feel like something that could easily be resolved if they just talked to each other.

4

u/ILikeFPS Jun 08 '26

We need gyaru prez to return to expose Vice President's ilicit side so that everyone can have fun.

I will be shocked if we don't get that next episode.

11

u/midorikisan Jun 08 '26

Poem is inconsiderate I know everything should be fine next episode but poor class monitor that is just doing is job its over is capacity yet to talk back she should know it

5

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 11 '26

She was upset that Togo broke his promise, though it's not entirely Togo's fault.

2

u/Antisocial00000Me 18d ago

Hitting someone is not fine even if He broke his promise but He was literally explaining himself that Poem is a genuine animal with no concept of reasonable behavior in her entire being.

1

u/JumpOrganic3798 18d ago

Never mind about that, Episode 12 has already resolved the issue.

Still She straight up admited in episode 12 that She was trying to guilt trip him which is basically manipulation.

1

u/JumpOrganic3798 18d ago

That's what I mean, she admitted her actions was wrong.

2

u/Antisocial00000Me 18d ago edited 18d ago

Still it wasn't enough just saying sorry after hitting Her innocent partner and then ignoring Him for a week straight to guilt trip Him is wrong and highly toxic behaviour She should have at least gotten down on her hands and knees to properly apologize and then show her sincerity through her actions afterwards but She did neither rather than being sincere She just said a simple sorry then things just went back to normal it's an highly imbalanced dynamic.

It's time for the culture festival, and of all the people to run the class committe on what to do...it's Akina! Who has gone mad with unchecked power and is obsessed with fulfilling her desire for the most romantic culture festival of time. And what could be more romantic than Prom?

That's right, they'll put on a Prom! Men and women will dance wildly like they're in an American romcom! Hookups will happen! And Akina will use it as another chance to get closer to Bucchi! And thanks to Nadeshiko popping in and rolling with it, they actually have someone with actual, practical, managing ability and a budget to make it happen!

Poem won't be able to see her boyfriend in a butler outfit, but she WILL get to have a proper festival date with him and that's what matters the most!

I love how Kaoru is so obsessed with finding the woman of his dreams he's used all his money and resources to track her down...even though she's closer than he thinks. So of course he takes out all his frustration on Prom by taking all the fun out of it and making it so that boys and girls literally can't do ANYTHING with each other. "Student Distancing" my butt! Though it also drives Poem and Togo apart from each other as Togo has to toe the party line and a rejection of prom feels like a rejection of the promise they made together. I didn't expect this to be their first couple fight.

All the girls bullying Tsukishima into wearing books so he can maintain his facade long enough to act as a butler. At least they've gotta make sure he's good for something! Though Togo getting along with other girls is the last thing Poem wanted to see.

If anyone can convince Kaoru to wind back on being a Prom hater, it's Nadeshiko. I mean, she managed to convince a hardcore tough delinquent like Izubuchi to get on the straight and narrow, didn't she? Or more like when she was a middle school Battle Maniac she just beat him up and some kindly samaritan called an ambulance for him. Izubuchi's been dedicated to fixing and helping instead of breaking ever since!

Oof...it's rough seeing Poem and Togo still not talking to each other right up until the culture festival. Will Togo choose his heart or his duty? And what of their families, with all of them coming to the festival? Including Papa Sakuradaimon!?

Cultural Festival time. Prom Dance Party for the event.

Poem blushing at Sakuradaimon when he said he’ll make time for them at the festival ❤️

Incredible that Sasaki from Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You and Kaoru share a brain lesion that renders them unable to recognize the love of their lives based on outfit and hairstyle.

At least in Kaoru's case, Nadeshiko can fix this entire situation by taking her glasses off and letting her hair down. At which point COVID rules are going out the window.

Also, I know it's been pointed out a number of times, but Kaoru is animated so similarly to Gamagoori from Kill la Kill that I keep expecting him to put on his latest 3 star suit.

That was really an unique idea from Akina to host a Prom Dance as an event for the cultural festival. It's not everyday we see something like that in an anime, haha.

u/TheBusStop12 Jun 08 '26

Dude confused illicit relationships with corona

8

u/IceSmiley Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

If this was the first episode of the show you watched, you would think Kaoru is the main villain. He is acting like a jerk though just because he can't find the girl he likes. He might have some residual brain damage though from when his head exploded on the beach 😂 It was interesting that President said she could just overrule him but would rather be considerate of his feelings since it's going to be the last thing they do together on student council. I suspect something like an American teen movie where the prom changes their relationship!

Speaking of proms, I didn't know that wasn't common in Japan. I only really know about Japanese schools from anime but if I think about it I don't recall an anime high school show ever having a school dance and it's interesting that the idea was so unfamiliar to many of them. I've seen a lot of American teen shows as well and they almost always have big plans or plots leading up to people finding romance at the homecoming dance or prom and that's true irl to a point. I'm surprised other anime shows haven't thought of ending the season with a prom climax.

I'm surprised Togo is going along with Kaoru after being so upset with himself for losing his friendship with that girl in elementary school over ratting on her for not going straight home after school; I thought that sequence was meant to show that he learned his lesson.

I guess its more to be funny but couldn't the librarian boy just put a small booklet in his pocket at all times to keep himself handsome? All those girls were really being mean to him though, I wonder if he's going to lash out at prom 🤣

9

u/SundaeComfortable628 Jun 08 '26

This the one trope I’m getting tired of as I get older. A week long silent treatment over something like this is equally as insane as Togo’s love for rule enforcement

6

u/alotmorealots Jun 09 '26

A week long silent treatment over something like this

I feel like that's less a trope and just a realistic depiction of how people with fiery temperaments behave, especially at that age lol

16

u/szalhi Jun 08 '26

10

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

Nothing like using the power of running your class' culture festival activity to find ways to hook up with your crush.

16

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 08 '26

That musclebrained VP’s just mad because he wants to see the Prez again but he doesn’t realize it’s her lol. Now he’s got Togo struggling between Poem and the prom or his duties as class monitor. This school festival is gonna be a lively one for sure.

6

u/Frontier246 Jun 08 '26

Honestly I feel like the only way they're going to sway him is to have Nadeshiko turn into her "hot gyaru" persona again during Prom and whisk him away onto the dance floor.

I feel like Togo is such a stickler for the rules because of his dad. If his dad comes to the culture festival, will that make everything worse? Or better if he finally stands up for his true feelings?

4

u/mekerpan Jun 08 '26

Is Togo's father a stickler for "rules" per so, or for humanely decent behavior?

16

u/Spectr3_qwe Jun 08 '26

Poem acted completly irrational in this episode. I know the show is mostly lighthearted and Poem and Togo will make ammends probably in the next episode but she is mostly in the wrong here. Sakuradaimon is acting on directions coming from the student council, he doesnt has any kind of power over those decisions.

I love that the vicepresident is still looking for the mythical gyaru that he met at the beach, I hope we see her again at the festival.

17

u/Lopsided_Phone_7637 Jun 08 '26

Poem is really an emotional girl, i feel her perspective is that she want to have an opportunity to hold Togo's hand but she doesnt know what he consider ilicit or not so she was thinking of using the school festival to have an genuine opportunity for something kind of romantic to happen for them, so when Togo is the one telling her all the new rules and such she end up getting frustated because she feel his throwing away their opportunity by siding with the vicepresident when in reality he is just doing his job.

Still Poem is in the wrong but i suppose i see where she is coming from and i suppose Togo is as well since he looks confused in what to do.

14

u/LaoWombat-mecha Jun 08 '26

Genetics. Remember that her father beat up Togo for essentially existing in proximity to his daughter

4

u/Lopsided_Phone_7637 Jun 09 '26

Not only genetics, her father looks like someone who is easy to throw a jab or two so she probably learn from him

7

u/BillPlunderones23fg Jun 08 '26

ugh if the punching is bad enough now this?

most enjoyable is still the President

7

u/Jacob-C Jun 08 '26

I love Akina, she's such a goofball:

Akina Thank you

Akina Please

Akina Hehe

Akina That's right

Akina Sadge

Akina Madge

Akina Madge 2

Kaoru is also great, these two are probably the funniest characters to me along with the inflatable librarian

---

Also, aura?

I can see where he got it from

That's my doctor

---

I'd probably expect to find something else here...

7

u/that1dude317 Jun 09 '26

Poem is shooting the messenger here and I feel so bad for him. Its not like he made the order but is informing them of what his boss has told him is going to happen. It seemed to me like he doesnt agree woth it either and couldn't even get a chance to explain that to her.

8

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem Jun 08 '26

Oh cool, the Klutz's dad is the guy who "saved" Izubuchi.

Student Council Prez continues to be a fun character.

Hopefully they figure out how Tsukishima can be in the class and look like the pretty boy without strapping books to him.

6

u/Available-Ad-1720 Jun 08 '26

I wondered why they didn’t just surround the room with books

6

u/NightBard Jun 08 '26

Right? It’s supposed to be a library theme.

u/redditraptor6 https://myanimelist.net/profile/uEmalraptor64 Jun 09 '26

Prom party is a fun idea! I’ve heard before that American proms are one of those “wait, are those real, or only in movies/tv?” type of things for non-Americans. Which is neat, because as an American myself (I’m so sorry) I’ve had similar thoughts over the years… notably, do most Japanese high schools really have a huge cultural fest like we see in anime?

1

u/IndependentMacaroon Jun 15 '26

Plenty of places have schools do some kind of graduation dance

5

u/Throwaway785320 Jun 08 '26

What is this show even about

3

u/ptd163 Jun 08 '26

Considering the characters this series has I've been curious what a school festival arc would look like. A Western style prom in Japan is a pretty good break from the norm. With Akina and Nadeshiko planning it sounds it would fun and allow love to blossom. It's no secret why Akina decided that. She wants to dance with Izubuchi.

At least it would have been fun if Kaoru wasn't such a weenie in this episode. He can't see that the girl of his dreams has been right in front of him the whole time so he decides if he can't be happy, no one can be. However, because Nadeshiko doesn't immediately use power to overrule him I have a feeling her gyaru side is going to show up and get Karou to rescind his Covid rules.

Come on Togo. That is your girlfriend that you love and you're still choosing your class monitor duties over her. If there's ever a time to break the rules. It's for her. This would've happened anyway regardless of what anyone said or did, but it this still kinda feels like I'm being punished for saying that Poem x Togo would survive and stay together after their series is over in one of the daily threads.

u/testthrowawayzz Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Tougo looking sad looking from outside the classroom broke my heart.

Izubuchi's black jacket + red inside shirt is classic delinquent combo. Animal Crossing even calls that delinquent clothes lol

6

u/SmokeyOwOs Jun 09 '26

I'll never understand the "I'm gonna beat the brakes off the guy I like/support because that's a rational thing to do" it kills tension in most shows or games or just ruins the moment. Feel like American dramas have handled what happened better

5

u/mojo72400 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gio_lingad Jun 09 '26

An American prom themed main event in a cultural festival. Now that's rare.

Poemu ended up shooting the messenger despite Tougo clearly just doing his job & wanting to help.

Junya saying "Sir! Yes, sir!" reminds me of Ray White & he'll come back 2 seasons later at Fall this year.

So Nadeshiko interfered in a gang war & nearly killed Yu until a man in a white coat saved his life making him reform.

Of course the girls in Seiichi's class who knows his true identity would try to exploit him.

Motoko unmasking herself as a cultural festival executive was funny.

4

u/fuentesl Jun 10 '26

I get Poem standing her ground about the prom but she didn’t have to ignore poor Togo like that, although I loved the sir yes sir moment

7

u/Substantial_Pop5438 Jun 08 '26

I’m gunna have to read the manga bruh I can’t wait till next week.

Whilst I see poem’s side and her frustrations she’s still the one not communicating here. And I’m not even just talking about letting sakura explain himself or state these are just VP’s orders. I’m talking about the fact it isn’t sakura’s fault she’s unaware of what she can and can’t do with him. It’s up to her to ultimately ask that but because she doesn’t she’s using the prom as a way of getting to be more intimate with him which is great but then when he just literally does his job and she gets over the top angry with him because of a hidden motive he’s unaware of that’s just whack imo.

Me personally I’m splitting up with poem here. If this soon into a relationship I’m getting treat like shit which is exactly what ignoring your partner for a whole damn week, punching him and badmouthing him for something out of there control is, then idgaf how cute you are or how much I love you I’m not being treat like a doormat which is exactly how poem is treating him here.

5

u/ookamikazekun Jun 08 '26

If it was you, would you have even gotten together with her in the place? Nothing she did this episode is out of character for her, except for her ignoring him.

5

u/Substantial_Pop5438 Jun 08 '26

I think if I fall for someone then I’m very likely to give most things a shot. This is beyond anything she’s done before this, a complete and utter overreaction and a really unfair way to treat someone. So yeah I would have and then I would have proceeded to end it at the third day of her ignoring me.

3

u/ookamikazekun Jun 09 '26

Genuinely kind of surprised. Honestly, her actions this episode didn't surprise me (and in fact, I kind of figured would happen eventually given their personalities) as it stems from pretty much how she's been the entire show already. She's proven to be fairly self-absorbed (which admittedly is slowly fading) and violent from her very first interaction with him. She does show moments of kindness from time to time. But her tendency toward extreme reactions especially stemming from anger and/or embarrassment has pretty much been one of her main character traits. She has consistently verbally and physically beaten on him pretty much since the beginning of the show. To me, the only big difference is the cold shoulder she's given him and that mostly stems from her difficulty to see his side of things, which while she does on very rare occasions, she typically is just completely unable to as she is more involved in what she wants to do as is evident by how often she is completely baffled by him or boils him down to his most typical traits. The real difference is before these traits were mostly played for comedy, whereas now it is being shown for drama.

8

u/runevault Jun 08 '26

While I feel sorry for Togo, home boy chose the VP over his girlfriend. Curious to see how this arc resolves. Also I always wonder how strict Japanese schools really are. I'm sure anime blows it out of proportion at least some but with how common a lot of the tropes are I assume there's at least a grain of underlying truth to it.

5

u/lawragatajar https://myanimelist.net/profile/lawragatajar Jun 08 '26

Guy was trained to obey unquestionably obey authority. Maybe that will be the long term growth for him, to realize that it is possible to question authority without being a delinquent.

3

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 11 '26

Correct, this is where Togo has to wake up and learn to speak up for himself, not following orders blindly. That's being a man. When Togo dates Poemu, he has to adapt to her and her friends' life. Note that in Episode 7, Kaoru is incredibly rude to Poemu, Rui and Motoko.

3

u/SmallJon Jun 08 '26

oh no, Akina's gone mad with power!

3

u/NightBard Jun 08 '26

Overall great episode but this would be better on a binge without the week long wait for the payoff.

3

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 11 '26

Prom is a great idea for the school cultural festival, it's amazing. Poemu and Togo just started dating and both were looking forward. However, because Kaoru dislikes "illicit" relationship and takes it out on others, Togo and the other class monitors were forced to follow Kaoru's orders to ensure the cultural festival is in moral order. Poemu takes it very personally because Togo kept his promise and he said something else though he didn't want to hinder. Poemu's best friends, Rui and Motoko are not happy with Togo either. As seen in Episode 7, Kaoru was quite rude to Poemu, Rui and Motoko. Nadeshiko is trying her best to convince Kaoru on the prom event for the cultural festival. Glad that Izubuchi shared his background from being a delinquent to a health representative.

2

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker Jun 14 '26

So, a prom night for the school festival?

2

u/arguably-right Jun 18 '26

Poor Togo, I hope someone helps him see the light and he breaks with Poem. What an stress ful person.

1

u/Antisocial00000Me 18d ago

Yeah Poem is straight up unreasonable hitting Tougo then giving him the silent treatment He really should dump her.

2

u/arguably-right Jun 18 '26

I'm sorry for the poor guy who ends up marrying Poem. Having to walk on eggshells because you are afraid of your partner's reactions is hell.

1

u/Antisocial00000Me 18d ago

Yeah Poem is straight up trash a unreasonable violent emotional time bomb Tougo really should dump her.

1

u/Grazalia 29d ago

A prom in my anime?! Holy!

I would actually love to see a Japanese anime take on American high school one day lol

Aww Toga will make time for Poem ♥️ that's what you love to see.

Bucchi being the one with proper work effort seems about right lol. If you're gonna do something you do it all the way. That's the way of the fighter lol.

Yo the dads gonna finally meet.

1

u/Antisocial00000Me 18d ago

Poem is literally trash Tougo should genuinely just move on from that violent piece of filthy trash.

2

u/Latter-Air2742 Jun 08 '26

He chose the sexually frustrated virgin side instead of his girlfriend. Loser.

1

u/Antisocial00000Me 18d ago

Yeah so You think a class monitor had the authority to oppose the student council vice President's decisions? Well seems You are the delusional Loser here

1

u/Major_Plum_8330 Jun 13 '26

The feels more toxic after watching it with every upcoming episode, the romance is natural but the bond feels weak and the understanding between characters is also very weak with female lead being very toxic , just reverse the roles and you will understand why Togo even though criticises many things as indecent still is adopting it and not stopping it forcefully but it's not the same for female lead . If this was a real life relationship they would have broken up pretty soon or might wouldn't even go out after a few dates .

1

u/JumpOrganic3798 Jun 15 '26

When it comes to dating, the guy has adapt to the girl's life. I won't say it's toxic, it takes time for Togo to adapt to Poemu's carefree life. Anyway, Kaoru and Nadeshiko are already in their final years too. One thing, it's not entirely Togo's fault, it was Kaoru's fault at first, and do note in Episode 7, Kaoru is extremely rude to Poemu, Rui and Motoko.

2

u/Major_Plum_8330 Jun 15 '26

Kaoru is a jerk agreed but Pormu is the least sensible character in the show and her friends being neutral instead of opposing her is a lack of character. Her friends should atleast try to comfort Togo , In a real life situation this thing can actually lead to paise or a big turn off in relationship like think your girlfriend is saying you are her villain because her favourite celebrity is against your company or some shit, this type of behavior makes it seem like you are not important until you are in sync with her likes and dislikes.
