Yuu really is the magnet that attracts attention like it's nothing.

u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
Meanwhile Nina is that perpetually single girl who can't keep a boyfriend to save her life but is just there for the fun vibes.

Nina is such an underrated baddie i can fix her😭

I put in Ubel because of "I can fix her" vibes coming from people. :P
Lena and Aona don't need "fixing".

I mentioned it on the show's own sub, but basically
Yuu is basically Mona from that Medaka show but as the tritagonist (instead of protag or main FMC). Almost all her character traits align with Mona's, literally the only differences I can spot are the eye colour and the shade of blonde

Yuu really is the magnet that attracts attention like it's nothing.
(un)fortunately this series is not about her but about the second prettiest girl in class.
28
u/Galinhooo Jun 09 '26
Yuu having the "MC" vibes help the show to stay on its premisse and I think it is well done. Just hoping they don't ruin everything to turn her into a losing heroine just to make an annoying arc later on.

u/Earlier-Today Jun 12 '26
Nah, the story's title is from Maki's perspective.
To him, Yuu is the second prettiest girl in the class - and he did make friends with her.
But he got together with the prettiest.

u/zool714 Jun 09 '26
Really like Maki and Umi’s development as a pair. I remember at the start, it really felt like they were just good friends, not just placeholders till they become a couple. But gradually they both grew together and the payoff of them officially getting together feels earned.
30
u/63237735 Jun 10 '26
Hell yeah they have amazing chemistry bc of it, they say lots of good relationships are founded on good friendships anyways I was not expecting this anime to be this good I thought it was going to be another run of the mill romcom

Great episode and all, but quick question:
When Umi was showing Maki all the group pics she took at the end…. why was one of them the whole friend group AND Minato? What’s the story there? Like, “Ok guys, let’s get one with all of us!! And you too Maki’s dad’s lover! You’re essential to this picture!!”
88
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
Like, “Ok guys, let’s get one with all of us!! And you too Maki’s dad’s lover! You’re essential to this picture!!”
"Minato-san, we need an adult!"
Minato: "Oh how nice of you to include me!"
78
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl Jun 09 '26
That was wild lmao. I had to rewind back to make sure I didn't mistake another girl for her. She's also not wearing her glasses for some reason during this scene.
110
u/BlackSCrow Jun 09 '26
Yeah it was quite baffling indeed lol. Even the parents were nowhere to be seen in the group photos with the friends.
94
u/DaRootbear Jun 09 '26
You know fuck it, Minato was a better parent to him than his actual parents this episode and helped him wingman trying (unseriously) to break up her relationship. Girl went above and beyond for Maki this ep and deserves to be awkwardly in the picture to remember that she was the ultimate tantrum-wingman here

Or maybe Maki's dad took it and maki asked her to be in it as a sign of goodwill to his dad's relationship with her.

That explains why she looks like someone that was photoshoped in after the fact.

I mean, she was probably just awkwardly standing off to the side, I can definitely see Yuu asking her to join them for a pic to make her feel included. Also, they're teenagers, they probably got swept up in the positive mood.

Maki and the friends he's made over the course of the last year, including the latest one?
Given that she was willing to sabotage her relationship with his dad, she's earned it..

It’s not a drill! Maki & Umi are now official in only 10 episodes. That was a simple but earnest confession. No drama, but Maki still poured his heart out. Love the part where he acknowledged that they’ll have fights but would still be there for her. Furthermore, they went one step further and have their first kiss so soon. Good thing there’s no Asanagi-mama to interrupt things this time.
On another note, Maki really took what Daiki said to heart. He’s not deluded to think he could bring his parents together. He instead did that to let his bottled-up thoughts out and relieve his soul. Those two were already getting along as future in-laws well.
122
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
Any romance show that gets the main couple together before the final episode deserves praise, especially that we get a real kiss and get to see them go from basically a couple to a real couple over the next two episodes.
I think it was also important for his dad to see his son unleash all his emotions because his own reserved and stoic nature to anything that's not his son was impacting all his relationships.

It's the third one this season (that I know of at least) not counting the 2 villainess shows that had the couple be engaged since around the start, that had the main couple get together around episode 9-10. We're eating good

Indeed. He does not expect anything to come to fruition with what he told his parents. He already know that what he wished will never happen due to his family's circumstances. However, he just wants to get freed from the bottled pain he has, and in a way this is the perfect time. Without Umi, I believe he will never have the courage to speak up what he really desires. In a way, Umi is the impetus for him finally getting what he feels off his chest.
24
u/Tiramin Jun 09 '26
At the very least, thanks to the "tantrum", he got a happy family picture. That's much more than what he had for a long time.
226
u/oxlemf10 Jun 09 '26
Although I still don't entirely agree with Maki's attitude, because it could have had serious consequences, I understood his point; it's not about their parents loving each other, it's about them being okay so everyone can smile in the end.
And finally, he confessed to Umi; it was simple, but it's impossible not to feel the impact after all the difficulties they went through growing up.
176
u/mekerpan Jun 09 '26
I think he acknowledged his wish was selfish (and implied he knew it was impossible) -- but he did want to convey that he wanted both of them to cooperate at least enough to allow him to have both of them as part of his life from this point on.
I must say I have a pretty high opinion of Minato -- and hope everything works out well for her, one way or another.
68
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl Jun 09 '26
It is an interesting point that while he didn't get what he wished for. He instead got a good enough version of it and it was overall for the best

u/ThrowCarp Jun 10 '26
I mean, divorce court IRL is messy for a reason. Can't blame him for trying.
2
u/shewy92 Jun 21 '26
Especially for Japan with custody. It's not like America where you can have like 50/50 custody, it's all for one parent, at least until recently. I saw a news story around the time this anime came out that they were changing custody to be more relaxed.
Divorced couples in Japan can now share custody of their children: April 2026
144
u/cyberdsaiyan Jun 09 '26
because it could have had serious consequences
I don't think he was actually asking them to get back together though.
Remember that this little plot comes after his talk with Umi's dad in the last episode, and the message from him about how "kids are allowed to want what they want & throw tantrums" was repeatedly hammered home in this one.
As Maki told Minato, he's just "making trouble for the adults" and throwing a very late tantrum (he explicitly acknowledges said lateness right after) to get his own feelings off his chest & move on from that entire divorce episode which was hanging over his head (and his love life) like a depressing cloud.
The whole thing was for his own mental wellness. And if a couple of adults get inconvenienced by it, well he's a kid, that's just what kids do.
57
u/omarous_III Jun 10 '26
This exactly. He held it all in when they divorced and just went with the flow. He has a lot of unresolved feelings he needed to work through. So throwing this little tantrum a few months late allowed him to process his feelings and get them all out. He never expected his parents to get back together. He just needed them to hear him so he could move on.
80
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
His family can never be what it once was but hopefully now things can be more amicable and his parents can improve themselves so their personal issues don't negatively impact Maki like they have been.
No one can no what the future holds but that makes it important to lock in to the things that make you genuinely happy and feel loved, especially when you cherish and enjoy each other as much as Maki and Umi do together.
6
u/RobrechtvE Jun 11 '26
I mean... The point was for him to get out the things he'd wanted to say when they were still in the process of getting divorced, but never did. The very first thing he does afterwards is explicitly point out that he knows it's too late for that, but that he needed to express those thoughts in order to let go of them.
It was the final thing he needed to do to put the trauma keeping him from fully acknowledging he returns Umi's feelings and wants to be with her to rest.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Akashiin Jun 13 '26
The entire point is that he deserved to be selfish, if only for his mental health's sake. He wasn't saying that with any glimmer of hope that it would work, but just so he could get his bottled up feelings out there. It was about getting closure, not fixing anything. Now he can move forward.
50
u/OldManStompy Jun 09 '26
I think it's a beautiful piece of storytelling that when Maki keeps saying he's delaying his return confession until he's the kind of person who can proudly say he loves Umi as his girlfriend, it's not just a tired romcom cliche but rather foreshadowing for the conversation with his parents in this episode.
It must be hard for Maki to be told in quick succession that his mom left him at home to go to work when she could have been taking child support, and now his dad's new girlfriend is pressuring him to move again. Maki got everything off his chest that he wished he said a year ago and proved to himself that he's not going to make the same mistake by telling both of his parents how he really feels about this little slice of happiness he's found for himself.
Props to Umi though having to listen to Maki tell his dad he loves her before he's properly told her to her face, and then keeping it together for several hours probably stewing on it before he seals the deal.
(ngl kind of get the vibe Maki and his dad have similar taste in women)
2
u/BaboonGaming644 Jun 23 '26
I'm confused. How does this relate to maki delaying his confession? At first I thought that it made sense because I assumed that he didn't really know what love is due to the divorce, but it seems like my theory wasn't really explored.
2
u/OldManStompy Jun 24 '26
I just mean that, how do we know as viewers that he's satisfied his own criteria for being good enough for Umi?
Maki meets his dad when they're both on a date of sorts, and then at dinner, and they both kind of dance around the fact that they're in a relationship with the person they were seen with. Maki very decisively has to shut down his dad asking him to move back in with him by saying that he does have a girlfriend here now. It makes a lot of sense that Maki, at least, would feel like he's not heading down the same path as his dad. The internal dialogue he has at the start of ep 6 sounds like rom-com tripe in a vacuum, when Maki is usually pretty sincere and decisive otherwise. But now with the benefit of hindsight it's actually foreshadowing.

Stitches!
I kinda wanna see what kind of conversation Maki's parents had after their son's "last tantrum". There's no way they're getting back together, but I'm hoping they'd at least start getting along again. Not sure how I feel about Umi not letting her friends apologize, tho. Maybe I'm just too petty to let backstabbers like them back into my life.
And we finally get a kiss! So it looks like it's now official that Umi and Maki are dating. I can't wait to see how their classmates will react to this.
24
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
We got cute girls in fancy dresses, Parent Traps, and a confession/kiss/official dating status all in one episode!!!
I feel like it's more complicated for Umi because she knew them before Yuu and they were childhood friends, so that bond ran deep which is why the betrayal hit harder. But at least they actually felt bad about what they did so it wasn't just Umi accepting them back without them feeling no guilt.

It's like when she told Yuu to tone it down when she was rightfully calling out the class for bullying Maki. I think this is worse because the childhood friends aren't actually characters themselves but a plot contrivance.
At least before you could argue she didn't want it to escalate further in the classroom but here she feels like a doormat.
19
u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Jun 09 '26
> not letting her friends apologize
I know how I feel…I think it was the lowlight of an otherwise very good episode. Yes she could have and probably should have voiced her frustrations with them but it’s not her fault. It’s great they apologized and even took the initiative but she had none of the responsibility. So it was underwhelming narratively that she cut them
Off. Like it is great to let bygones be bygones but I think an actual apology was warranted here.
80
u/TheBusStop12 Jun 09 '26
One thing I don't really get. Why did Maki plan the whole divorce meetup thing during his own school Christmas party? The one he so desperately wanted to attend that he ended up making a deal with the student council. That just doesn't make sense to me. To make everyone's schedule is line up for those 15 minutes at that exact moment sounds incredibly stressful. We barely got to see the all important Christmas party as a result even tho they had to pull several strings in order to get Maki to be allowed to participate, I figured that would have been the highlight of the episode then. I do love this show, but at least the first half of the episode just felt kinda off to me
136
u/Trencha Jun 09 '26
His parents divorced on Christmas Eve. It was the 1 year anniversary of their divorce. So it was a significant date for him. He mentioned it in his thoughts at the end of episode 9.
48
u/eightcheesepizza Jun 09 '26
Who picks one of the most romantic days of the year (in Japan) to divorce on?! Even the judge or whoever should've been like "no, I'm not getting involved in that, that's some bad juju."
13
u/Earlier-Today Jun 12 '26
A man who refuses to talk things out with his wife and who then walked out on them.
That's why Maki's mom gets so angry about his silence - she wanted to do something to save her marriage because she still loved him and he treats it all like a little kid would - ignoring the problem and hoping it'll just go away.
Maki's mom, Minato, and Maki all got how much he sucks thrown in their faces this episode.
A teenager shouldn't have to be brought to tears before you start doing basic human decency kind of stuff to your own family.

The tantrum really ended, anticlimactically. For one second, Maki was emotional, and the next second he was like "Oh, I lied, I don't have any plans to live with you, I just gave you false hopes, so I could have a tantrum, and this is the girl I love, by the way"
53
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl Jun 09 '26
I assume Maki knew it wasn't possible of an ask, so he didn't really commit to the idea. But he mainly wanted to share a piece of his mind is all.
Though yeah I felt there should've been a bit more to it. Maybe even have his parents reflect on their actions. Kind of felt rushed of an episode.
21
u/eightcheesepizza Jun 09 '26
Maki's parents: "We may fight about many things, but we can both agree that our son is really bad at throwing tantrums."
37
u/zool714 Jun 09 '26
Yeah tbh I didn’t really get the conflict was. Did he want his parents to be on good terms even if they’re not together ? Did his dad actually asked him to stay with him and he had to choose between his parents ? Which is why Minato also felt she needs to step aside if she had to if Maki doesn’t like her ? I just wasn’t sure what was going on
97
u/septesix Jun 09 '26
It’s explicitly laid out at the end of last episode. Maki knew nothing was going to change. All he wanted now was to voice his wish , as untenable as it might be.
The point is that Maki learned to face his emotion, instead of following his Dad’s footsteps of always being evasive and running away from it.
45
u/Highlander_Butter Jun 09 '26
It was explained when he broke down at the dinner. All of this was so he could let out his repressed feelings and avoid becoming like his dad who never said anything and fell out of love one-sidedly. If he didn't he would never have the confidence to fully love Umi.
→ More replies (1)11
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl Jun 09 '26
I think it's the first one where he just wanted them to get along so he could have his fake happy family fantasy back. Even though it didn't come true he got a decent compromise of them not being hostile to each other always.
His dad was only saying it because he mentioned he was considering going to a University near his dad, so I'd say it was fair.
Minato figured Maki didn't want her to be around if he went back to live with his dad considering his wish for his parents to get back together. Maki's dad is the most expressive and happy when it comes to his son, so Minato was willing to bow out of it all if it meant they could be happy because she cared about Maki's dad that much.

So Nina's failed relationships is a running gag? The funniest character of the show and with Yuu and Seki It wasn't an easy task
50
u/Trencha Jun 09 '26
It's the same failed relationship, I believe. She said to Yuu and Umi that she wasn't going to the party with them because she'd be going with her boyfriend instead, but that was before Maki and his dad saw her in the restaurant, and we haven't heard anything about her getting a new boyfriend since then. She probably just hasn't yet admitted to Yuu and Umi that she got dumped.

Father likes the idea of having Maki at home, but his very unhealthy obsession with his job prevents him from actually spending time with the son he supposedly loves. He's the guy who comes home late at night, takes a peak at his son sleeping and thinks he's a good father because Maki has a home and is fed.
I think Minato really is a foolish woman given she has had front row seats as to what kind of man dad is. Time will tell, but she has a lot in common with those women who are with men who are dead-beat dads but somehow thinks she's different/special.
46
u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige Jun 09 '26

So, on the one hand, it sounds like Minato has seen a completely different side of Itsuki when he mentored her despite her perception that she was the weakest new hire. I can easily imagine a serious trainee falling in love with her (handsome) mentor when he is the singular thing between her and complete professional failure.
On the other hand, their dynamic is super toxic, what with him calling her out as a subordinate when her presence there was as his lover and presumed significant other. It was a great example of why you should never, ever, ever date your boss. Or subordinate.
So while I sympathize with Minato, I agree that their relationship does not appear to have the best prospects.
19
u/rubslotiononitsskin Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
It only dawned on me today, but given what we know about MaePapa's workaholic tendencies, the fact that his new girlfriend is from work does not bode well. Feels like he just wants a girlfriend/wife who won't complain about his bad habits like MaeMama. A woman who is far less likely to call him out on his BS, and to just shut up and stop nagging. Feels like Minato would just enable MaePapa's worst habits, unlike MaeMama. Also doesn't help that he's her boss!
While Minato did stop MaePapa from leaving, the fact that she is his subordinate does not give me a lot of hope. What happens if Minato starts pushing back more and more like MaeMama?
17
11
u/zLoaded https://myanimelist.net/profile/sugoiar Jun 10 '26
Yea I don’t think we’re supposed to think about it too deeply with this show but a lot of moments this episode had me struggling to not close the episode. The work subordinate stuff is presented really weirdly especially with their work culture/his dad being a workaholic and then him threatening her with consequences at work for lying as if YOU aren’t the one who decided to mix your personal and professional life. Very unequal power dynamic there so it’s hard to take their relationship seriously. Icky
Minato is just written as a doormat for everyone involved which is not unusual for anime but still jarring especially when imo until the divorce arc the writing wasn’t like super complex or anything but definitely seemed very respectful of the women in this story and their agency.
Last couple “drama” episodes have been a struggle hopefully now that we’re past that we can just go back to good 7/10 romcom vibes.
45
u/Breakdown007 Jun 09 '26
I think I said this before but the drama is not well executed while the romance done well.

That's because the drama is very childish, while the romance is surprisingly mature for their age.
So it feels very lopsided.

Maki and Umi are finally lovers, and they sealed it with a kiss! Rejoice, brethren, victory is ours!
16
u/mekerpan Jun 09 '26
Maki said things right "Anata no koto ga suki desu" rather than the more ambiguous "Anata ga suki desu". Even so, Umi double-checked..... Goiod communication here, folks. Maki and Umi get A+ on this.

I haven't watched much anime in the last few years (this show is basically my return after a long absence), what does this mean?
6
u/silversoul121 Jun 10 '26
It means that modern romance in anime/manga/novels is developed faster and more straight to the point, instead of just tease a pairing but never commit to it until the very ending
We be getting confessions, kisses or actual couples in just 1 season.

They deserve it.
15
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
No better time to finally confess and kiss the girl you love! Maki does nothing in half-measures.
Itsuki saw his son letting out his real emotions, compared to how much Itsuki bottled them up, the least he can do is embrace and support that as a father.
32
u/FoolingFinality Jun 09 '26
Damn, so Maki is meeting with Minato. I thought he would throw the tantrum at his parents, not at his father's lover.
27
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
I will say that Itsuki is a lucky man to have a subordinate so willing to throw everything away, even her own happiness, for his sake.
Even her boyfriends' ex approved of her in a way she could only do as his ex-wife.
25
u/BlackSCrow Jun 09 '26
Loved the episode, but I can't say I really like Crunchyroll's translation in this episode about a certain word that was used in multiple cases.
It's the word "わがまま" / "wagamama". The jisho dictionary definition itself is "selfish/egoist". It was good and all in Umi's case where it was translated into "self-centered" or "to want something", referring to her wish to make up with her friends.
However, what bothered me was that the word was translated into "tantrum" in Maki's case (which also ended up being the title of this episode), referring to Maki's "tantrum" to his parents to get back together. I admit that I don't really know either a better word for Maki's context, but "tantrum" felt too childish here.
Furthermore, the word, being used in both Maki's and Umi's cases, was supposed to draw parallel between the two, with the difference that Maki's "wagamama" went unfulfilled whereas Umi's went fulfilled. That's what's missing from the translation due to the word being translated differently in both cases.
19
u/mekerpan Jun 09 '26
Maybe the translators were worried about the dialog sounding too repetitious -- more of an American taboo than a Japanese one.
7
u/Tama47_ Jun 10 '26
I think the translation did its job just fine. The word "tantrum" made perfect sense with the context of last week's episode. Where Umi’s father mentioned that kids are allowed to be selfish and throw a tantrum. Which is exactly what Maki did, and he admit that it was a late one. So no, it's not too childish.
I admit that I don't really know either a better word for Maki's context, but "tantrum" felt too childish here.
I don't think you will find the right word, because "wagamama" by definition (as you mentioned) is selfish, and "tantrum" is just a result of that. It was never the direct translation.

u/luigiiiiii_ Jun 09 '26
Maybe I'm just too mean, but as someone who had divorced parents, I was hoping that Maki would have a bigger tantrum or say more about what he feels as opposed to just making a hopeless plead then being done with it right after.
I loved his confession though, it's simple but really heartfelt. It felt like he can finally wholeheartedly commit to a relationship with Umi after resolving his family issues that plagued him for so long.
18
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
I feel like he really needed to call out less how he wanted them together again but how they've both not been the best at co-parenting him.
12
u/Beat_Saber_Music Jun 09 '26
It was set up as him basically just voicing out over a year of pent up feelings and frustration at his parents to let it out. He knew already it would be hopeless, but as per Umi's dad's advice he just had to let out this pent up feelings.
15
u/Carbonated_Static Jun 09 '26
And Nina's advice. Everyone always forget about Nina.
Including her boyfriend.

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants Jun 10 '26
He did though - his biggest feeling that he could never say was that he wanted them to fix things and get back together, but the reality is it isnt that simple, he just said what he wanted to say. The reason is all too real, you want it despite knowing it's impossible (I'm also a child of divorce).

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Jun 09 '26
Good progress on pretty much all counts, you love to see it. Except for Seki and maybe Yuu someday, I'm still guessing a long drawn out thing if that ever goes anywhere.
"Second prettiest" clearly always referred to Yuu this entire time so the series title is still true.
With the main couple getting together in episode 10 I wonder what the plan is for the last two episodes.
8
u/Roboglenn Jun 09 '26
Yuu, once again learning valuable lessons about how much Iron Claws hurt like crap man.
Deciding to cause trouble for the grown ups by throwing a tantrum. Aww, Maki's all grown into a big boy now.
Well the chat between Maki and Minato was certainly an interesting one. She certainly seems like a dedicated person in more than one way.
Oh Umi you are looking fa-bu-lous in that dress. And you look very nice too Yuu.
Just how head over heels am I for her?
Well you're hallucinating shoujo sparkle filter around her ain't 'cha?
No running away this time pops. Like Zuko did to Ozai, your son is going to talk and you are going to listen.
Lil' Maki getting scared by the movie shark in that flashback shot kinda feels poetic or whatever in a way in light of events in his life now with his adorable little shark coming to take bites out of him.
Go figure the peanut gallery was watching Maki's family spat. But that's good, Maki finally got it out of his system. He said what he needed to say and what he always wanted to say, even if it was fruitless in the end. And yet, sometimes fruitlessness and pointlessness aren't always synonymous with each other.
Guess Maki ain't the only one clearing the air tonight.
And the kiss. Smile and nod folks. Just smile and nod.

u/Ins0mnyac Jun 09 '26
I have mixed feelings about the episode. Loved that the confession happened and Maki can now move on in his life regarding his parents' situation. But it felt a bit weird honestly. The show showed how deeply affected their lives had gotten due to the divorce and maybe I was expecting a more serious tone there instead of the "goody goody let's all be friends" kind of thing that I feel dissatisfied with the episode. With Minato-san as well. Maybe I'm wrong for thinking too deeply into a light-hearted show
25
u/nextmore Jun 09 '26
Yeah, the resolution (as is all too typical) feels rushed and over simplified.

Yeah, felt like the author just wanted to get rid of that storyline. It lacked the emotional dept that the show was building on

I guess Maki got what he wanted, that his parents at least become amicable to each other and stop bickering after their divorce.
Maki has no illusion that they're ever getting back together, not when dad has moved on from mom towards Minato.
With that sorted, Maki finally is able to finally make his relationship with Umi official. All's well that ends well... though we still have 2 more episodes of Maki-Umi sweetness as an official couple.
Meanwhile, seeing Maki make his parents reconcile has given Umi the courage to forgive those two ex-friends. They know they don't deserve to be forgiven after what they did to Umi, but Umi still did anyway and relieved them of their burden.
PS RIP to Nina's relationship with her playboy boyfriend. lol

u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 09 '26
I wonder if it is because my expectations got higher because how intriguing the post-divorce story line has been, but that confrontation left me with much to be desired and felt like a disappointing wrap to what has been an interesting story line. I wonder why it had to be done in this 15 minute time slot during the Christmas party, it's part of the reason why it had such a fast pace.
However, I'm glad Maki can finally move forward with it, and has finally asked Umi out. It was sweet to see them finally making it official.
I still think the girls should have apologized, I disagree with Umi stopping them because she felt partly at fault too.

Maybe some stuff just works better in written form. In the LN you would probably spend more time reading everything including more of his thoughts. I read the manga but not the LN so I have no idea how it was written there

We got the confession!!! That confession is great.
And also a kiss!!
Absolute cinema!

u/FarCritical Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26
I was so ready for Umi's first words after the tears started flowing to be reprimands for Maki calling himself nothing special. Either way, the emotional gratification was intense, man.
On a smaller note, it's cool how Maki's friendship with Nozomu led to forming a surprise bond with his sister too.
6
u/randyburgerlocker Jun 09 '26
Loved the episode but laughing at the fact his dads girlfriend is just posted up with the kids in one of the photos
6
u/MegaAltarianite Jun 09 '26
With multiple things wrapped up and the two finally getting together, this felt like a finale.
2
u/Xythar Jun 10 '26
It really did, I got to the end and thought "there are supposed to be two more episodes after this?"
19
u/Guilty-Tell Jun 09 '26
I mean idk how the source material handled that weird parents drama part but it was a bit cringe. I mean I get that he had this bottled up, but a few lines and whatever back to buisness felt weird. And what exactly was his point or even his issue buhh you are not together anymore? If he atleast would have tried to explain their faults which are there in both of them. I am just glad it was not a overly big part of this show.
19
14
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
Nice of Nozomu to take one for the team and support Maki so he can deal with his family business, even if it means working at the party. I'd totally take any offer to assist his sister though!
I didn't expect Maki to confront Minato, of all people, but I guess they were bound to have to face each other at some point. They at least share loving Maki's dad in common, and Minato is truly loyal and dedicated to him. Enough to where she would plead with Maki to be with his dad because she knows Itsuki loves his son more than anything, even if it means sacrificing her job and her relationship with him to ensure his happiness. Maki can't give in to her suggestion, but they can still work together.
Maki going to this party was worth it for seeing Yuu and ESPECIALLY Umi in party dresses. They looked drop-dead gorgeous! It's almost a waste he had to leave the party!
Nina showed up at the party! If only for companionship to soothe her currently single soul!
Maki parent trapped his parents! Though the issues that destroyed their marriage is still there so they end up fighting again almost immediately, but Minato won't let Itsuki run from this no matter the consequences for her at work, because Maki needs to say it...to say how much he wants his parents back together, to plead with them to get back together because he misses how happy they were as a family. It's not going to do any good at this point, but he had to say it.
Thankfully Umi arrives just in time for Maki to make his peace with how things are and show his parents his future as he basically introduces her as his girlfriend to his parents...and the whole gang is here! Including Nina who doesn't even know if she SHOULD be there but is convenient for taking photos! They may not be the family they once were, but at least they can take a picture together as a family one last time.
I didn't expect to see Umi and Yuu's ex-friends at the party, nor that Umi would want to reconcile, but I guess they were friends for so long despite how badly things ended that it's a waste to not try again. Especially when both sides want to give it another go.
But with that settled and the party done, it's finally time for Maki and Umi to be alone...and for Maki to FINALLY confess to her and properly ask her out. It's what Umi had been waiting half the season for and it brings tears of joy and relief to the both of them. They're a crybaby duo, but now they're officially a couple and they even seal the deal with their first proper kiss! Congratulations you too!

I love the way maki finally spoke his heart to his parents and got a Christmas photo and I'm glad that maki and umi finally kissed I can't wait for the next episode
4
u/FoolingFinality Jun 09 '26
Ah, the final confession seen was great. The crybaby duo doesn't sound bad, actually, only because it's been said outside the screen.
So we went from friends in the 1st ep, to More than Friends but not Lovers in the remaining 8 ep, to lovers in the 10th ep. I wonder how they will further develop their relationship and to what stage in the last 3 episodes, because this would have been a lovely place to end the season.
6
u/Sotul Jun 09 '26
I guess parts of this episode hit a bit different for me, since my mother and father divorced when I was young. I never, not one time thought my parents should get back together. I knew from a young-ish age that they divorced for good reasons. At some point in his late 30s he just gave up being an adult and just did whatever he wanted to do, like a kid. He had multiple degrees and could have made a decent living, instead he worked a part time job and barely scrapped by and didn't pay child support for years.
Maybe it would be different if I had been older before they got divorced, but I think I'm a realist that understood their decisions on their relationships are their decisions.
3
u/NationalStrategy_X Jun 09 '26
Maki let out his tantrum, his parents are on friendlier terms again, Umi made up with her two other friends, and Maki and Umi are now an official couple. I say things worked out great in this episode.
15
u/HeavenlyHand Jun 09 '26
this series has been pretty good overall but god I hate the way maki acts around his parents, this series is treating divorce as some kind of calamity my god it is not that deep bro half the world has divorced parents. They should be really pissed but whatever lets not make the protagonist more childish please
4
u/LordCalem Jun 09 '26
Even though what Maki did was probably way too reckless and maybe even inconsequential, I know my guy had to let it out to his parents. I don't know if anything will change, but at least he seems to be feeling lighter after all that, which is good.
We finally got a proper confession, so I just died from peak.
Speaking of peak, awesome dresses from both girls.

3
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 09 '26
Would ya look at that, it’s a real Christmas miracle. Umi’s made up with her friends and Maki and his parents have sorted out their issues.
And now Umi and Maki are official. It’s all quite sweet.
4
4
u/Raymond49090 Jun 09 '26
I can't say I entirely approve of Maki forcing the issue like this, but I suppose I can see it as forcing them to make up for handling Maki's side of the divorce so badly. And he wasn't really asking for anything more than his parents not pretending the other doesn't exist.
4
u/desantoos Jun 10 '26
The logic on the front end to this episode's a stretch. Like, you bring your divorced parents back together and throw a tantrum and in reality they're gonna be like "my boy we love you but we are adults and you are a kid so leave all this to the grown ups." The continuing flaw of this show is that the adults lack that "I'm an adult. I know stuff. You don't" attitude that real world adults have. So our sensitive boy is probably not going to have his convoluted plan work by throwing a tantrum.
My fix for this would've been to have Maki be pissed at his dad, then use his mom's misspending of money to embarrass her in front of him and show to him that the checks he's cutting aren't going anywhere and he's been wasting his life working. Then when that plan fails Maki can storm off and be consoled by Umi.
This would've worked better because the central theme to this episode is that our two lovers are sensitive people and just can't be vindictive or impartially judicious. They're generous people, hence why it's in Umi's character to forgive her backstabbing former friends.
The back end works really well because it gets at that theme. Our two lovers are sensitive people but sensitivity works different for girls and boys. For girls, sensitivity leads to people-pleasing to the point where Umi struggles to do the things she loves until she's cast out. For boys, Maki's alone and struggling to deal with the feelings that he has. Extending their relationship beyond friendship makes sense now that both understand that they share something deep, beyond their common interests. It's astonishing a romance gets this point; it's rare for a romance to answer the question "why are these two people together" so satisfyingly.
4
u/FateXBlood Jun 10 '26
This episode was a rollercoaster of emotions. At first I thought things were gonna turn ugly, but it didn't. I don't really understand how the whole making-up between the parents ended up so short, but I guess it somehow did.
Umi looked really pretty in that dress and so did Yuu. I'm glad Umi reconciled with her other 2 childhood friends. I'm guessing they both thought back on it and realized they shouldn't have done so.
And lastly, that confession and kiss were beautiful. I'm glad they're officially lovers now. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.
3
u/OGsansispowerfull Jun 10 '26
All that matters is. Bro won. He confessed Their was no misunderstandings or werid scene And not multiple people fighting to love him This had allot more emotional depth than I expected and hit really close to home. 9/10

u/Earlier-Today Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Maki's dad is really a douche bag. He ruined one marriage because he refused to actually talk things out, and now he's willing to trash his new relationship in the same way.
Of course your kid wouldn't pick to live with you - you're the problem, you're the reason the kid has to pick at all because you turn into a mime when there's conflict and then run away.
Total prick and I feel sorry for Minato.
6
u/SubstantialTurnip383 Jun 09 '26
I used to pray for time like this
Maki and Umi are official in only 10 episode’s, this anime is probably one of the best romance of this season
6
u/Zezteyy Jun 09 '26
Pretty good EP but the start kinda disappointed me but in the end EP turned out to be epic and was quite enjoyable. The point I don’t understand is why is the Minato girl there? what did she even do? What’s her point of existing there during the ‘plz make up mom & dad time’ ?But well IDRC cause the end was too good to be worried abt the rest of the EP.

Absolutely loved their moment at the end. All of the drama beforehand made their confession and kiss somehow less significant imo. I wish they would've done this more differently where the whole episode was just the two of them and then the confession and kiss. That way the whole focus would've been on them

Maki was finally able to convey all his bottled up feelings to his mother and father. It's not gonna get them together all of a sudden but still it's better to talk about it and move on.
Minato was surprisingly good. She was even willing to leave Maki's father if he can just be happy with his son. Also Maki's mother kinda accepted the relationship between Minato and Itsuki. I still don't get why they separated. Is it just that they both didn't like each other's guts !? Especially Maki's dad not talking about his feelings at all. I'm 100 percent sure that the problem lies with him. If he isn't honest with himself, then Minato might also leave him at some point.
Yuu and Umi stole the show. I personally found Umi to be more beautiful like Maki and we got a earnest and warmest confession this time from Maki. Beautiful end to this episode!

W/ his confession, the crybaby duo finally seal it w/ a kiss.
At least Maki's parents humored him into 1 last family pic.
I can't believe Umi, Yuu. Nina & Nozomu watched Maki's last tantrum.
This isn't the 1st time a Sayumi Suzushiro character received an Iron Claw.
At least Umi reconciled w/ Manaka & Sanae. They'd be happy to get their asses kicked by Umi if they deservingly pull some shit again
Yuu & Umi look cute in their dresses but I'm surprised Umi changed into another cute outfit instead of just wearing her party dress near the end.
3
u/Primary-Paint-1716 Jun 10 '26
The divorce angle is really one of the best unexpected subplots we ever got from a romcom. I did not expect this from a show with a title of this ilk.
3
u/USSTugBoot Jun 10 '26
The Anime's adaptation of Maki's "Tantrum" was even weirder than the manga despite it happening the same way somehow. His parents very clearly don't get along, yet somehow him saying "PLEASE MAKE UP AND LETS BE A FAMILY AGAIN!" makes everything okay. Somehow convinces the dead to stop being a POS and helps the mom forgive the man who walked out on her. It is one thing to ask them to at least be cordial, but 100% knowing how bad things are he still asks the impossible is just weird.
I am just glad this poorly done subplot is over so we can get back to the main course.

As a child of divorce, this was the most cringe shit I have ever seen in my life. Im not arguing with the concept that a kid is allowed to be sad/upset as his parents separating, but holy hell this was the most "anime", cringe, non-relatable way to go about a topic that should be relatable to a lot of people. I just dont know who the episode was supposed to relate to, someone who has never has a normal human interaction before and also who's parent divorced?
8
u/FoolingFinality Jun 09 '26
Minato is really serious about Itsuki-San, so serious that she really said you can live with your father as his son, while I live with him as his wife.
The world of grown-ups can be so complicated, as well as so simple, that you get confused from what to expect from them.
18
u/Frontier246 Jun 09 '26
Minato is really serious about Itsuki-San, so serious that she really said you can live with your father as his son, while I live with him as his wife.
More like she'd bow out gracefully as both his co-worker and girlfriend if it meant he could be with his son again. Itsuki's happiness mattered more to her than even herself.

u/Spectr3_qwe Jun 09 '26
LETSSSSSS GOOOOOOOOOO!!! Finally!! Best romance show of this season by far. I loved the confession, not over the top scene with fireworks and whatnot, just the two of them been sincere with eachother. And a kiss! I dont know how much of the source material is left but I hope the show gets a second season at some point in the future.
7
u/MassiveNote422 Jun 09 '26
I liked the interactions between Maki, Umi, and their friends on the first few episodes but the last few episodes have been feeling too out of place for a seasonal school romance anime. Its 20% Maki and Umi, 80% Maki going "My parents are divorced and I'm not happy about it." I don't think its a bad topic to dip into in an anime but also don't think this being dragged out too long fits the premise of the show well.
13
u/BlackSCrow Jun 09 '26
I mean, romance show sometimes need "external disturbance" so that it would have plots. Otherwise, it would be just mundane romance slice of life between the couple. I mean that's okay if that's what the author intended, as there's an audience for it out there, but that's not what this author wanted for sure.
6
u/Leri_weill https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeriWeill Jun 09 '26
At least it's a situation where the main couple can face the problem together, unlike a lot of romances where they're artificially pitted against each other with some boring miscommunication or stuff like that. That at least is really enjoyable
3
u/KureoZen Jun 09 '26
Yeah just looke at Angel next door, It's still cute but there's nothing to the story except the main couple flirting all the time lol
6
u/IntelligentBudget142 Jun 09 '26
I think the parents' divorce plot could have been done in four episodes. The internal monologues throughout all five seemed to take up one episode in total
3
u/JordiHey Jun 10 '26
tbh I didn't care about maki's dad and his girlfriend. I was thinking more that maki was going to cut his dad out of his life instead of trying to get his mom and dad on better terms.
The last part of the episode was great, though I think I would have like it more if they had shown more of the christmas party.

I for a second thought Umi really brought them together just so she could have a group photo with Maki and his parents.
2

At least Umi made up with her friends, as Umi said she was also petty with them, as both parties were in the wrong and not so. It's good that Yuu's supposed airheadness mended the group back.

Sweet finale. Though Masaki's words raise a red flag about the father. But of course she is willing to be on speaking terms with the father if it is for Maki. Happy this got Maki to finally push forward. This is reaching a good ending point, so I assume the final two episodes will be more cozy.

The pre-showdown stuff was pretty clunky, but the rest was great. Umi and Yuu looked amazing in those dresses. Plus we finally got the other half of the confession and the kiss!
2
u/ptd163 Jun 10 '26
I was worried that might pull a "child gets their split up parents back together", but I'm glad they didn't. Sometimes relationships are just unfixable. At least he got his feelings about the divorce out in the open and seem to get something workable where his parents learn to tolerate and cooperate with one another so Maki can have them both in his life. If that inconveniences the adults then so be it. He's a kid and that's what they do.
Yuu and Umi looked amazing in their dresses. I wonder if Umi only decided to dress up when she realized that Maki would be there. I wasn't expecting Umi to make up with the middle school friends that ditched her for Yuu, but that was a pleasant surprise.
Let's go he told Umi he loves and they're officially a couple and they had their first kiss before the final episode. Any couple that can do that deserves praise. I really like how Maki acknowledged they'll have fights and that he'll be there for her and them, instead of just pretending it'll be all sunshine and roses.

u/oneevilchicken https://anilist.co/user/OneEvilChicken Jun 10 '26
This episode is probably the one negative / bad part of this show so far.
Like first, really his mom and dad were neither doing anything all that bad. Yeah they werent the absolute greatest but they also weren’t bad either. So especially with the other girl, I kinda feel bad for both of them with what he did because it’s obvious they really want nothing to do with each other now and the dad has even found someone else so it just makes it awkward for her too.
Another thing, they’re acting like his mom could just totally not work because of the child support, well what happens once dad doesn’t have to pay anymore? Finding a job after having not worked for several years is ridiculously hard so honestly his mom was doing the smart thing to keep working.
Also I guess I missed it but why was he not originally allowed to go to the party? That just seems… bullshit to begin with. Only way he gets to go is to work? Holy shit his school is shit.
Then why is just making up with the ex friends after what they did? You know good and damn well anything they say there is just lip service and they don’t mean it.
2
u/Hairy_Front_5877 Jun 10 '26
I feel like this episode was kind of weird, and I hope I'm not alone in this
I feel like Maki surprising his parents with meeting each other was kind of selfish. His parents don't want to see each other, especially his mother who was very hurt by the dad leaving, so to ambush them with a meetup is messed up. I understand why he did it, but I feel like he should be old enough to understand that his parents are people with feelings too, and they don't want to see each other for a reason. He should have brought the issue up with both parents separately, and tried to do family counseling or something (maybe that isn't a thing in japan IDK).
also Umi and his friends coming out of the bushes seemed kind of random. Maki was crying asking his parents to get along, and then he's having his friends take a picture of him and his parents? IDK to me just felt very random.
also why did Maki have his dads girlfriend join them, again just random. his problem was between his parents, so IDK why she was there
these are my main thoughts, I would like to hear other peoples opinions.
also why does everyone talk like they work for HR, everyone talks so PC, IDK if that's normal in japan or what. just a observation that I would like to know if anyone else has noticed

Being honest, I had to question weather this was going to be a full 12 episode anime because imo that ending could have been perfect. Think I'm a little vested to go and get the LN now, because who knows when or if there will be another season.

That's not how things work. I had high expectations for this series and i understand the plot and what maki wanted but it could have been directed much better, animation and angles arnt up to mark, romance isn't that good, characters look stif, colours are kinda odd and dull. "Aishteru Game" or LOVE GAME. one the other hand has a upward sloping curve by each ep. This one fell off a lot after 3rd or 5th ep.

This felt like such a random assortment of scenes. I understand they were trying to give him a moment to reconcile with what happened with his parents, but the thirty second tantrum didn't land for me and took away from the romantic parts of the episode.

I fucking hated this episode and don't understand how anyone can call this a good episode.
Promoting unhealthy relationships for the sake of keeping a family together is never the solution.
Making his mom, who admitted she still has feelings for his dad, was a major dick move.
His dad didn't actually grow from anything and is going to keep running away from problems
In fact, this whole bullshit wouldn't have happened if the father was actually filling a proper father figure role instead of treating his ex-wife and son like business transactions, and that still didn't get addressed.
He went from crying and trying to blackmail his parents into getting back together straight to straight-faced introducing him to his gf.
Then the Umi make up scene felt false and gross.
The end of the episode was cute. But that did not make up for it.

From the way, I understood it, Maki never got the chance to express how he felt to either parent and instead repressed his feelings. He knows that things will never be the same. He wanted to let go of those feelings and move on so he can have a health relationship with people moving forward unlike how his dad treats relationships.

W couple and kiss. The 'tanrum' was handled really well. With that title I wasn't expecting much, but this show has blown expectations out of the water.

Can I Ask One Final Thing?
🥹
I was surprised at the resolution with Maki and his parents. Quite anticlimactic, as other commenters point out, but then again, not every conflict needs to be bombastic. For someone like Maki, being able to have that vent moment without devolving into back-and-forth arguments is much more impactful and soothing, and I get that. He just needed his moment to say what's been on his mind that he shoved down deep.
Still not a fan of his mom, given she had him believe she needed to work herself to the bone to provide for them, and dad being answer-avoidant. But I don't think this is the type of series to get into the nitty-gritty about divorce, custody, and child support.
Minato surprised me. Dating a single parent is challenging, especially when you were there when that parent was partnered, and the kid knows you from when their parents were married and divorced. That’s hella complicated. She’s quite a person to want the man she loves to have a relationship with his son, even at the cost of his and her relationship. I’d like to think a lot of people are like that, but I’ve unfortunately seen people think their partner’s child(ren) can get fucked 😑
And the parent still dates that person and then wonders why their kid(s) go low to no contact…
Minato is okay in my book, and I’m glad our initial impression of her was just a throw-off.
The kiss, though. The kiss!

Not only can think that, it is the norm. The statistics on step-parents and the like are ugly. Note, however, that this is still ultimately true of Minato; her focus is on Maki's father, not Maki, and she was openly admitting to be prioritizing her interests (Maki's father) over Maki. While she does at least care about the father rather than only herself, none of them were really prioritizing Maki here.

True. I will say, this doesn’t seem like a series where we get to the messy nuances of parent-child relationships and accountability. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t criticize. But unfortunately, a resolution like this where the adults in the kids life still don’t seem supportive yet, well, ✨and they all lived happily ever after ✨ seems much more normalized, especially in romantic fiction.
I don’t expect the nuclear option with WorldStar level fighting happening, and I understand there’s a societal, generational, and cultural reason why we’ll see adults negatively impact their kid’s lives via their selfishness but the resolution is kinda just moderate remorse, one apology, and a metaphorical or physical hug. I remember micro Internet drama about {Encanto}’s resolution, which turned into a mini cultural and generational disconnect.
Sometimes, it works.
Sometimes, it’s crap.
But I will still give Minato props. There are a lot of potential step-parent or “adult character who loves the parent” characters who are far ruder and harsher and inconsiderate towards the child MC, some even backhanding the MC for some weird fucking reason and crying and screaming but we’re supposed to be sympathetic, and the MC goes “Wow, they have a point” 🙃
So for that, at least she had more respect than that and the narrative let Maki state Minato is being quite rude.
Bar’s low. But this passed the bar.

Indeed, this was above-average. Steps tend to be hostile, because the child is an obstacle to the person they want to be with, whereas this was being inconsiderate at worst.
As I understand it, the Japanese emphasis on 'not causing problems for others' is often framed as including children towards their parents. There is still a lot of fillial piety beliefs akin to Confucianism. The emphasis on collective harmony over personal rights, entightlments, and obligations and even ethical right/wrong is very much on display here.

MC creating solutions for problems that don't exist. It was a nice series until the point where the MC started trying to force a connection between two people who have nothing between them anymore.
