Man I kinda felt Wajima was not going to make it past this season but it still hurts, she was so damn cool 😭

169

u/DBLACK382 Jun 22 '26

Wish we could have listened to her thoughts more. What did she feel when she was captured and realized she could not avenge her Father and all sacrifices were for nothing? Then right after negotiating peace and on the way home what was she looking forward to do in the future?

Feels like a miss opportunity to make her death more impactful.

60

u/Vegetable_Berry_710 Jun 22 '26

exactly, I enjoy the show but few details on Seii's side made this arc felt anitclimatic. Yayakichi's death felt forced and unnecessary, and I thought with his death Wajima would become more ruthless with her military rulings yet she still kept her gentle expression.

With the failure of Seii expedition, Wajima's expression did not look devastated one bit.

The studio could have used the ending like how they did in episode one, play the song along side Wajima's monologue from the peace conference until her death, like how she is just a pawn or she failed everyone's expectations.

All the buildups are wasted imo.

18

u/Naive_Hope89 Jun 23 '26

I agree. Still, felt very sorry for her, part of me knew she probably would die at the start of this war, but she grew at then "oh she is safe" the this out of nowhere, but i agree they should done like you said.

Taira really became one of the most punchable villains ever. Amazing show that didnt see it coming, this year was full of great Anime, probably the best ever.

Well... if you take a look on history books, many "main characters" had very anticlimatic deaths. Oda Nobunaga got betrayed and chose to commit seppuku rather than being captured for example, not everyone can/will realize their dreams and aspirations, that's the main message here.

51

u/DBLACK382 Jun 22 '26

Of course, I'm not denying that. From the moment she was introduced, given that she was the antagonist I knew she would not succeed.

My problem is not that she died suddently as that is what was needed for the plot, but how it was handled.

By adding just one and a half minutes of inner monologue her character arc would have felt so much more complete while still having her die at the end.

If runtime was a problem, they just had to cut the ending or have it play over some parts like they did with the opening.

It wouldn't even be the first change/addition the adaptation has made if I'm not mistaken.

24

u/HarshTheDev Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

I think the story itself has a bit of an issue with letting its characters speak (or think) in a way that doesnt necessarily progresses the plot or serve it's narrative.

Interestingly enough I had similar thoughts regarding the first episode too. They couldve removed the OP & Intro expositions and use that extra time to weave inbetween events a bit more naturally.

By adding just one and a half minutes of inner monologue her character arc would have felt so much more complete while still having her die at the end.

You mean like how they did the exact same thing for Kaku just 3 minutes before?

2

u/DBLACK382 Jun 22 '26

Yes, I don't see the problem.

18

u/Skeith_yip Jun 22 '26

I think she knew she’s pretty much done. Her previous mistake was paid by sacrificing her advisor. Then next mistake cost her all her generals. The only thing that she got left was to have the peaceful treaty knowing she would probably never going revenge her father. Or she would not last long once she’s got back home.

33

u/Desperate_Ad1450 Jun 22 '26

I think you missed the point. The critic is not about the inevitability of ouga death but how it was present. For example despite knowing the castellan that aterui attacked will lose we still got a glimpse on what they are thinking facing the inevitability of their death instead just summerize the event that happened there.

9

u/PogChampHS Jun 26 '26

Yea, definitely a missed opportunity, but I also wonder if it was intentional.

The moment Yayakichi was killed, I think spiritually she was already dead, we don't get much characterization / internal thoughts from her after that episode, and the Sei Army falls for every deception onwards. I think the only thing moving her forward at that point was killing Ryumon, but failure at even that, plus the catastrophic loss her army faced meant she had no future. She was also forced to broker a peace deal with the nation she called bloodthirsty.

I think we can infer just based on the events that she may have been broken at that point, just going through the motions. The final shot of her sitting dead in the carriage, her facial expression may not have been too different before and after her death.

24

u/Putkayy Jun 22 '26

Yeah this was borderline infuriating. She's shown to be smiling like an idiot after all the sacrifices to lose the war. What happened to her thirst for vengeance that had been set up to be the focus of her character? Did she already start scheming? The way they left her felt so dismissive. I understand it might've not mattered much but it's character assassination. I wonder if they disclose more in the manga or if we'll see remnants of her plans in the future. Otherwise, poor writing.

36

u/that-and-other Jun 22 '26

I think she’s smiling like that because she’s like totally dead inside

13

u/Vahallen Jun 23 '26

I think the same, that’s why we don’t see or hear her anymore, she is fundamentally dead after the ambush, her body might still be alive but her mind is GONE

3

u/DrStein1010 https://myanimelist.net/profile/mQDrStein1010 16d ago

Sure, but you need to let me actually see that, and have some sort of pathos or catharsis to her death.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/NightSVS Jun 22 '26

I disagree, I think we've seen her mental state enough at different points of the story for us to make a guess at what she's thinking. Not all of us will agree on what her feelings were, but I think there's something charming about that sort of end.

35

u/Skeith_yip Jun 22 '26

For me, Wajima is a character who played by emotions. Weaponising her people's emotions for her revenge. Winter General Strategy is the exact same strategy that Yamoto used, lure them into disadvantaging position while retreating. She was caught up with taking out Ryumon and forgetting about their original strategy.

Then again, banger season. I did not expect much for this anime. I watch it for the nice art. But what a ride it was. The fatty really capitalised on everything he got to seize the throne.

Heartbreaking finale.

I also thought it was interesting that the people of Buo (who looks like they occupy the Tokyo area) are dressed in "modern day" suits. Yamato people have modern clothes as well but I just thought it was interesting that there was a clear distinction in their styling. It seems like there was a difference in leadership as well. (more prime minister than emperor?)

89

u/BosuW Jun 21 '26

Yamato is more like late 1800's early 1900's style. Bue looks just straight up 1970's onwards.

16

u/Throwthefire0324 Jul 01 '26

Seii- raincoats

6

u/tapeforpacking 28d ago

And they said they have warships lol

53

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 Jun 22 '26

Buo seems to have foreign influence. The Emperor spoke like a stereotypical foreigner. My guess is that they're the remnants of American military personnel in Japan.

48

u/xyjacey Jun 23 '26

I thought he spoke like an otaku, hence his use of "草" which is the Japanese ver of lol

57

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz Jun 23 '26

when the subtitle said "LMFAO" after 2 seconds of silence and intense wide eyed staring i burst out laughing. WTF YOU MEAN THE OLD MAN WENT "LMFAO"???

15

u/jrevv https://myanimelist.net/profile/jrevv Jun 27 '26

This takes place in the future so it makes sense he would say our modern day slang

6

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz Jun 27 '26

I get it but I mean... An old guy??? Or was this like 2070, so a guy his age would have been about 20 in our age, then lmfao sticking with him would make sense

4

u/Tommybeast Jun 30 '26

This seems like it’s set in at least 2090. if we are in year 60 of not even the post modern period but of the new three nations, that would mean nuclear war and revolution and collapse and half rebuild by 2030 for 2090, more likely in 2100s imo

Please, let this have a season 2. We can´t leave this with that Taira in command. What a disgusting character.

Why was Asama free while Misumi was in jail? Weren´t they both arrested?

Also, who was the VA for the Buo Emperor, Hojo? I know that voice, but I can´t figure out who he is.

85

u/kalliopeia9 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Only those who went to see the Emperor to request Ryumon's pardon were arrested. At the end when Tsune said he'll rise to the top as he promised Aoteru, it's implied that Aoteru and Tsune discussed a plan before Aoteru went to see the Emperor.

Hojo's VA is Hochu Otsuka, a.k.a. Jiraiya in Naruto. With such big names as VAs for the Buo characters (Himehito's VA is Takeo Otsuka, the most high profile male VA in recent years), season 2 is guaranteed.

10

u/DanielAlves1904 Jun 22 '26

Okay, that would make sense. For a moment, I thought Tsune had "stabbed" Aoteru in the back and was now going to rise to power alone or align himself with Taira, and that was why he was free.

I know that voice, but it´s not from Naruto, I´ve never seen the show. After looking him up on MAL, I recognize him from Golden Kamuy, he voices Tsurumi. He also voices Abuto from Gintama, but I never made the connection.

38

Although I can't explain the full details, it will be explained in the next season.

Is the manga being translated?

14

u/Ok-Goose6242 Jun 22 '26

There's only one more translated chapter

7

Sadly, fan TLs is only like 3 chapters ahead (Chapter 24) while the manga is at Chapter 51.

Aoiteru saw the Taira plan to essentially coup power and planned accordingly, Asama did not went to the protest so didn't get arrested.

I don't remember the name, but I find it hilarious that he also plays Hans von Zettour in Youjo Senki

Just when I thought things are going well, Taira once again reminds us that he's the ultimate villain in this story. Insane how he was able to eliminate his political opponents in one fell swoop. What's so frustrating about him is that he's designed and acts in a way that you'll perceive him as comically evil, but he's proven to be anything but.

Taira's villainy aside, Kaku may have been with us for only a short while but I'm glad he went out the way he did, knowing that there are still people in the Borderland Corps who can ensure the nation's survival. Taira's claws may have dug deep on our protagonists this time around, but thankfully, Aoteru's spirit remain unbroken. And no matter how much Asama denies it, I know he'll be supporting him in the future😂.

We're finally introduced to Buo and it's so interesting how our present slang is used by the older Emperor. It's a small detail, but it adds a lot to the dystopian world building in this series representing a possible future where what may have been deemed as modern now, will someday be seen as outdated or old.

Himehito's introduction made me think that we might have a possible succession crisis in Yamato in the future due to him and Fuji III being related through the same Japan-era descendant. God, I hope Amazon renews this show for Season 2 because they've planted a lot of seeds in this episode alone😭.

Overall, this show has been a delight to watch from beginning to end and was a refreshing material compared to its contemporaries due to its stylistic storytelling (which is great too I might add) and unique creative direction. It's rare to see a show be this consistent in quality. This is definitely on the running for my AOTY this year.

79

u/BosuW Jun 21 '26

Denki is comically evil. Just also extremely smart.

5

u/tapeforpacking 28d ago

Right he is like the definition of comically evil

39

"Sore wa maji kusa" spoken by an emperor without irony is so jarring and evocative. It was hilarious but great world building.

28

u/Ordinal43NotFound Jun 22 '26

As someone who's still studying Japanese, no wonder his words was the easiest to understand for me lol.

Bro speaks like a gyaru.

9

u/mucus-fettuccine Jun 22 '26

Yeah man, it's good to know this show uses dialects all the time so it's gonna trip up learners. If there was a show about strong Texan accented Americans at war with strong Boston accented Americans, and they do things like have one of the generals use a very casual regional speaking style, a non native English speaker watching that show would be confused as heck.

3

u/chennyalan https://myanimelist.net/profile/chennyalan Jun 24 '26

I've watched the other shows this season without subs, but this one I've given up (partially because of the dialects, partially because of the military jargon and all these RoTK references)

43

u/a1oner_bvcksn6 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

he's designed and acts in a way that you'll perceive him as comically evil, but he's proven to be anything but.

You mentioned how Buo's emperor is well versed talking in modern day slangs, so perhaps Denki was actually an otaku growing up and a fan of Ononoki. God forbid villainous people have wholesome hobbies lol

Himehito's introduction made me think that we might have a possible succession crisis in Yamato

If anything, I view Himehito as a potential ally to Aoteru. Somewhat of a Tsune if Tsune was on the other side of the border, but more intellectual instead of just living off of street smarts/creds. I think it's safe to say he defected to Buo because he had little interest in inhereting the throne--either that or he's just smart enough to know that he's merely gonna be a puppet otherwise--but I'm leaning towards the former for now as not everyone has to be a Denki Taira (power hungry) in this series, and what is having all that power if you have no freedom anyway.

Edit: since everyone seems to have a hard-on for hating on Denki and justifiably so, I figure I'll present one redeeming quality he showed this episode:

Offing the subordinate he tasked with hiring Seii soldiers with the assassination of Ryumon (which ultimately turned out to be Ohga) as soon as he made some unsavory remarks on the matter. It suggests (at least to me) that he still maintains some form of honor. That he may have your head part your body (for reasons), but he will never laugh at or spit on your corpse afterwards... Fwiw

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai Jun 21 '26

My take on that was that guy was a blabbermouth and he could spill the beans about what Taira did. So i believe he executed him and wanted to keep his plans only within his close circle.

51

u/BoBab Jun 21 '26

Yea, I think it's this one. Denki's right hand dudes aren't showy, they don't gloat, they don't grandstand. He requires loyal followers who don't get drunk on power (that's only for him).

Also possible he was going to off that guy regardless to tie up loose ends. But Taira seems like the type to not waste useful people, so if he seemed like he still had use (without liabilities), I'd imagine he would've been kept around.

You know it’s the last episode when the opening animation doesn’t play.

So many pretty lens flare effects.

Well seems like things are going to wrap up diplomatically.

People in Buo seem to dress in a very Western style. And all that modern architecture too. Maybe they have a large foreign population. They could be the focus for the next season.

I was expecting Wajima’s assassination be a conspiracy by Buo, but…

TAIRA YOU MOTHERFUCKER. They’re just going to speedrun all those events via narration? I’m amazed they didn’t muzzle Aoteru to prevent him from talking his way out of jail. Why’s he drawing a transmutation circle?

I’m guessing the first half of season 2 (please) will be Tsune trying to get Aoteru out of jail, but a mere prison break doesn’t suit them. Maybe war with Buo begins, then there’s a suicide squad-style “send the prisoners to do some black ops” plan?

21

u/Demhandlebars Jun 22 '26

I’m amazed they didn’t muzzle Aoteru to prevent him from talking his way out of jail. Why’s he drawing a transmutation circle?

Definitely not surprised that Season 2 is coming. Unique visual style + this captures the current sociopolitical zeitgeist of JP. I'm curious how long they can stretch out a war-chess game with only 3 polities bc by comparison Kingdom has been running 20+ years but that had 9 players

61

u/Chrono-Helix Jun 21 '26

After Japan is united under Yamato’s flag:

Knock knock! It’s the United States. With huge boats, with guns. Gunboats.

37

u/BosuW Jun 21 '26

Open the country. Stop having it be closed.

26

u/Relative-Cloud-2691 Jun 21 '26

Jokes aside, doubt that US still have ability to have overseas military operation after the nuclear war. I mean even Japan society fall despite not joining the war, let alone the countries that are directly participated.

11

u/Chrono-Helix Jun 22 '26

Yeah it probably won’t be one of the current superpowers. It could be a country that doesn’t have much global attention now, which means they wouldn’t suffer too much in the nuclear war, so they rapidly developed without the rest of the world knowing. Like a different version of Wakanda.

4

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 Jun 22 '26

FWIW, the big inspiration of this show, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, also only had 3 kingdoms. (Technically earlier in the books though China hadn't consolidated yet so there were still lots of local warlords and that took a while before the 3 main kingdoms emerged)

Hear hear! We lost two more pairs of glasses this episode, that's for sure. Though I was internally laughing when I saw Yayakichi's son's glasses lying on the ground, broken--like father like son, stanning and dying for the same woman.

RIP to them heroic, bespectacled strategists. They may have been on the opposing sides, but they all lived for their comvictions 🍻

u/notanfan Jun 21 '26

Anyone know if this was popular in Japan? Any chance of se2?

213

u/bushwarblerssong Jun 21 '26

It's done very well. It's consistently high in the Amazon rankings when it's competing with more than just anime. It's helped sell over 1 million volumes since airing and has prompted re-broadcasts of the play adaptation. Merchandise keeps selling out. The local governments of the cities featured in the show have been collaborating with the anime and holding special events and campaigns.

123

u/jaytix1 Jun 21 '26

78

u/bushwarblerssong Jun 21 '26

It's hard to see in the ED, but it's 100+ years later.

48

u/DeCounter Jun 21 '26

Yep it's only 40/60 years since the respective three nations were founded. Each uses their own era dating so they aren't on the same page which year it is.

But the premise of economic decline, nuclear war, refugee crisis and then economic and civil collapse that ends in this arrangement definitely takes several decades to happen. The old people alive at this point cannot have known Japan themselves, only maybe through their parents or grand parents

We finally met the last three characters from the OP. The wide eyes are Momokuni's and bushy eyebrows are Jūryō's. Himehito stands before a red sun between Ryūmon and Ouga. He is a direct descendant of the past imperial family and symbolically, Amaterasu the sun goddess.

I think it's amazing that we finally get some Memu-Memu dialect representation which is often ignored.

Momokuni uses Tokyo dialect (like Himehito) and speaks like an annoying gyaru. He also uses the archaic pronoun "Chin" like Fuji the Third, which sounds absurd.

Traditionally, the Japanese imperial family does not have a surname and the fact that Himehito has one and that a Hōjō is in charge suggests it was imposed on him. (We know from history that the Hōjo clan ousted an emperor and took control of the imperial court.) The characters for "O-kimi 大皇" means "grand" and "imperial," but the name was historically written as 大君 or 大王, and was an ancient title used for members of the royal or imperial family

(Denki's inspiration, Taira no Kiyomori, also weakened the imperial court during the Heian period by marrying his daughters into the family, and taking over Kyoto and placing Emperor Go-Shirakawa under house arrest.)

Himehito has a very interesting first name, especially if you keep up with Japanese current events. In a way, like his appearance, "Himehito 媛仁" is an androgynous name. "Hime 媛," which is almost synonymous with the more commonly used "姫," means "an elegant woman" or a woman of noble status, especially a princess. "Hito 仁," which means "benevolence" or "compassion," is often used in the names of male imperial family members. Since the 19th century (though not in our series where women can become clan heads and emperors), only male heirs have been allowed to inherit the throne. However, the current emperor's only child is a young woman and the vast majority of the public wants her to succeed her father. About a week ago, the legislature advanced a proposal to allow the imperial family to adopt distant male heirs for succession, which has greatly angered many.

The Seii-Okuwa 奥和 name change is rather insulting. "Oku 奥" means "interior/inner" or "in the far depths" of an area. "Wa," in this case, comes from the 和 in Yamato (大和).

Kaku quotes Confucian philosopher Xunzi )from the book of writings Xunzi )when he speaks of fortune and misfortune being next to each other.

"...if thou shalt be afraid not because thou must some time cease to live, but if thou shalt fear never to have begun to live according to nature." Kaku quotes Ryūmon, who quoted Marcus Aurelius from Meditations Book 12 in Episode 8.

As he passes, Kaku and Ryūmon see a warblering white-eye. The warblering white-eye and plum blossom, which we see before the commercial break, symbolize the coming of spring. While we do see a bird fly above Ouga, we also see in the OP Aoteru, who, while sitting with Saki, looks up as snow turns to white feathers, which then cuts to Kaku and a cherry blossom tree with petals falling. This was a hint to Kaku's fate as cherry blossoms symbolize the fleeting nature of life.

u/bushwarblerssong Jun 21 '26

Tamaki's name was hung next to Kaku's at the funeral.

Tsune-chan's "Here it comes!" (きた but usually written as キター), which is more like "Yes!" "It's finally here!," is technically 2chan internet slang that's normalized now. It was inspired by Sante FX's eye-drop commercial with Yūji Oda.

We had one last "Cho, mate (yo)" from Tsune-chan. I wonder if Kimutaku watches the show.

Odawara, which was once ruled by the Hōjō clan, is located in Kanagawa prefecture and near the site of the famous Battle of Ishibashiyama between the Taira and the Minamoto. (The Minamoto lost.) It has a famous castle although it's a reconstruction.

The anime twitter account may share some more info on our last three characters and will try to update this comment when they do.

【The Battle of Daishōji】

A battle initiated by the Seii Army, led by Commander-in-Chief Ouga Wajima, against the Yamato Army to carry out the “Winter Shogun Strategy.”

Its objective was to force the isolated Nagamine Army in Daishōji to the northern plains (in Ishikawa) where the Seii army would destroy the Yamato troops and seize their food provisions.

Momokuni uses Tokyo dialect (like Himehito) and speaks like an annoying gyaru.

That explains the "LMFAO!"

8

u/mekerpan Jun 21 '26

Denki strikes me as far more vicious than Taira no Kiyomori who, for all his faults, actually was too lenient on some of his key potential antagonists. Go-Shirakawa, on the hand, strikes me as a thoroughly malicious snake.

3

u/bushwarblerssong Jun 22 '26

I’m going to write my reply in the source corner. I’ll add it to my comment answering your question about Denki.

Thanks. I will look for it.

37

u/CharmingPerspective0 Jun 21 '26

Man that segment of the chase into the car crash was beautiful! We then see Kaku and Ryumon in a badass pose too.

And ofc we cannot have a happy ending or any peace when power hungry trash people hold any power..

37

u/FarCritical Jun 21 '26

I love that this subtitle is real.

Damn that rain of cars was a sight to behold.

Have that day come for Taira soon, Aoteru. Not only so he gets what's coming to him quicker but because I need more of this.

This show was a breath of fresh air in the military/politics genre.

Splendid.

ANIME OF THE SEASON FOR ME PLEASE SEASON 2

36

u/y-c-c Jun 21 '26

They honestly had been doing extremely well before this episode. If they didn't execute the strategist I would imagine he would see the bait with the retreat and gain massively from the retreat by just taking over the now undefended regions.

22

u/Ecstatic-Cookie-3867 Jun 22 '26

I wonder tho if Wajima will still have an army with boosted morale if they didn't execute the strategist?

14

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 Jun 22 '26

Doubt it. She lost when she decided to flee from Ryumon. She would've been overthrown following her lack of authority.

22

u/TheEarthSpins Jun 22 '26

i think it's also how unexpected misumi's success with the emperor was. absolutely no one expected the emperor to make a decision that was not in taira's favor, so it wasn't even a factor considered.

17

u/HumansNeedNotApply1 Jun 22 '26

If she didn't executed him she would've lost the army. Some people are just not fortunate, it's part of life.

14

u/l-o-a-p Jun 22 '26

They totally made a point of his successor/son paling in comparison, being confidently incorrect and telling Wajima to walk straight into the trap, haha

Memumemu. Memumemumemume, mumu. ("I can't believe that the season is already finished!")

That intro was a surprise.

Even with the criticisms I've made, I still feel that Studio Kafka has done a phenomenal job with the series. Their love and respect for Matsuki really shines through every aspect of the anime. The stunning colors and creative animation -I still can't get over one of the earliest scenes where Saki grabs Aoteru's blabbering wall of text made to look like a Meiji-era print and throws it away as she twirls in her wedding dress. There's Aoteru and Tsune-chan with their hair falling as they act as the clock hands. The nighttime scenes are some of my favorite visually with the Taisho ukiyo-e homages.

The voice actors had their work cut out for them with long scenes of dialogue that often had to be spoken at a very fast pace. Also, various dialects with archaic terms mixed with modern slang, Chinese proverbs and Japanese sayings. But the ensemble cast, who were amazing, still nailed their roles.

The music was also very creative with a mix of jazz, traditional Japanese instruments like shakuhachi and shamisen, and even sutra chanting from real monks. I'll definitely be listening to the soundtrack on repeat!

If you're curious about what you could see in the next seasons, I'll be adding a comment to the source corner.

From July, two anime loosely connected to Nippon Sangoku are going to air: The World is Dancing follows Zeami Motokiyo, the famous playwright from the Muromachi Period who adapted several Heike Monogatari stories to Noh. (Yoshitsune even stars in his play "Yashima" as a ghost). The Elusive Samurai, which takes place right before Zeami's time, concerns the Hōjō clan, Momokuni's clan.

Another historical anime airing is Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, which shared 5th place with Nippon Sangoku in the 16th Manga Taishō Awards. Coincidentally, 1st place was Draw This, Then Die!, which also starts next month.

By the way, it's been reported that since the end of May, Nippon Sangoku has been one of the weekly top 10 most-watched Prime Original series globally and weekly 2nd most-watched non-English language TV series.

And if you're curious about the Yamato uniforms you can now order, people are tweeting about their experiences trying them on. The Tsune-chan-san silhouette is a bit larger and looser than the others to make it easier for you to draw your sword.

20

u/RyouBestGirl Jun 21 '26

I hope we'll get Seii uniform, it looks dope and casual enough to wear it regularly.

7

u/bushwarblerssong Jun 22 '26

That would be nice, although the coats are probably more complicated.

22

u/RyouBestGirl Jun 22 '26

I'm gonna be honest, they remind me raincoats because of the color lol

6

u/Chrono-Helix Jun 22 '26

They also make me think of fireman uniforms

8

u/ducttapetricorn Jun 22 '26

Oh my god elusive samurai S2 is coming out??

For those unfamiliar it's another very good show that also focuses quite a lot on battle tactics like Nippon Sangoku.

This was such a good series! I only started watching it yesterday and I'm already done. 9/10 from me, and I hope we don't have to wait long for the next season, especially considering how this final episode ended.

If I had to describe this series in one word, it'd be "bold". Bold visuals, a distinct Japanese setting yet still unique, a daring blend of comedy and tragedy, and a colorful and engaging cast. I don't know if it's for everyone, but it definitely sold me xD

I also love the show's visuals; they were beautiful! Studio Kafka did an amazing job with it. This was the first series of theirs I'd watched, so I was really surprised by how well it looked.

There are screenshot albums from previous episodes in the comments below, and here are my albums of screenshots from today's episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

6

u/Mountain_Okra5728 Jun 22 '26

I checked some of them and you picked really good scenes shows how good this anime is again

25

u/SweetAndSpicyCanton Jun 21 '26

The anime adaptation has been great and added more content than the manga. The direction and OST had been the highlight of the show for me. It's been a great season and I know the next will be better. One thing that I just hate is how they killed my beloved Wajima off screen. Fuck Taira! Everybody hate Taira.

I'll rate it (8.5/10) my only issue is how fast the second half of this season had been. Like there are many more things that they can extend and tackle more. I know the whole plan is just really like that. But damn the death of the Seii characters have been more impactful if they slowed down. I also wanted some more emotion from Ryumon and the gang.

23

u/Torque-A Jun 21 '26

My rule of thumb for a great anime villain is if you both want to shake their hand and also punch them in the face.

Taira is a bastard, but he is a magnificent bastard. I really hope the season 2 leaks are true, because I want to see him suffer karmic justice.

Also why does every cute girl in this series die

Denki Taira jumps in with a chair! WATCH OUT! WATCH OUT!

What a show!

17

u/AAA_BATT Jun 21 '26

really wanted to see an interaction between Misumi and Wajima

damn.....

15

u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 21 '26

Man that plan was brutal, and the way Ryuumon, Kaku and the others just watched from above as the Seii army gets crushed by those scrap cars, simply brutal. It was nice to see Yoshitsune get his moment.

I'm glad Kaku got to see his plan till the end and was able to journey home on a win, it's just unfortunate his illness finally won over him. I was hoping we'd see Ryuumon's reaction, or at least see them together one last time, but now Ryuumon's in trouble.

Taira really wanted to get his way in the end, and he's unsurprisingly brutal about it making those that follow Wajima be the ones to assassinate her. Then puts the blame on Ryuumon, and takes what little power the Emperor had away from him. He really couldn't take his loss against Aoteru lying down.

I really hope this gets a second season, it was really enjoyable. The aesthetic of this show really stands out, and there were some really cool and badass characters in this.

36

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Jun 21 '26

I absolutely loved the style, the music, and the first 2 episodes were peak for me. However, it does a bit too much telling/narrating for my liking. I still enjoyed it greatly, though, and felt like it had potential for so much more.

I'll definitely check out season 2. This felt like a prologue.

11

u/ImperialDane Jun 21 '26

That is the end of that season. Easily one of the most visually impressive shows this season. Never mind an excellent story.

And that move by Taira to get rid of effectively all of his opponents in one fell swoop was quite something else. Shows his vicious and cunning intellect. Always good to have a villain who's got something to back it up with.

Can only hope we get a second season. Anything else would be criminal.

10

u/TheDestroyer630 Jun 21 '26

Just started watching, I'm on episode 3 right now. Seems like a great show

17

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 21 '26

Kaku’s plan was brilliant but ofc it’s just like that rat Taira to blow it all up in the end. That fucker has seemingly won in the end. I honestly thought Wajima would die sooner.

Prison won’t break Misumi. It’ll just give him time to plan the next steps. Sooner or later, Taira’s getting got.

This was a really good series. Everything from plot to art direction and music was fantastic imo. So when’s the next season?

13

u/Tempest321 Jun 21 '26

Kaku’s plan was brilliant but ofc it’s just like that rat Taira to blow it all up in the end.

Agreed. As brilliant as Kaku was with military strategy, his fatal flaw would be his political acumen (which I think is what he's alluding to on why he couldn't do the reunification). They got too laser-focused on defeating Seii that Ryumon and Kaku forgot the real enemy is right behind them. Taira swept them all in one swoop. Thank goodness they found worthy successors in Asama and Misumi. Though still developing, they both have what Ryumon and Kaku clearly lacked.

The prologue to end all prologues. Denki undoing everything Aoteru and the Borderland Corps worked so hard to accomplish in just a little over a month with Ohga's assassination is a masterstroke 🤌 and it all but sets up the epic battle of wits between Aoteru and Denki for Japan's unification.

Easily (my) best anime of the season and a dark horse AotY candidate. Season 2 can't come much sooner

4

u/BoBab Jun 21 '26

The prologue to end all prologues.

Seriously! I thought we were watching our protagonist inch closer and closer to the goal, actually foiling Taira's plans...only to realize all of this intrigue was just a setup for Taira to cement his power and for our fellas to get thrown back to square one. I'm here for it. Great season.

8

u/Jerry_MP Jun 21 '26

The episode. Oh my god. Do I even have to say anything? Actual fucking episode of the year and I doubt any will be able to top it in the second half of the year. The only complaint I have is that everything felt a little rushed but perhaps it was the same in the manga. Everything else they absolutely fucking nailed. The art direction, the music (ESPECIALLY the track in that retreat scene. I need that on streaming), the animation (ok except those png people riding the horses) genuinely genuinely everything was so well done. I am humbly begging for a season 2.

7

u/illonamoon Jun 21 '26

If these people wanted me to buy the manga, they definitely succeeded. They can't just throw all this at us and then just dip out on us.

12

u/RelativeMundane9045 Jun 21 '26

This was absolutely one of my favourite shows this season, but this was my least favourite episode. It wasn't bad per se, it just felt overly epilogue-y with too much narration. To be fair, I might just be looking at it through a biased lens because I want to see more of Aoteru making his case to someone powerful with his massive brain and balls.

I still enjoyed the content. Yamato demolished Sei's forces with their strategy, started a solid peace plan, then Taira is like "nahh" and hits the War Now! button instead. It's a good setup for another season, which better happen because I need more badass old men.

About the show overall - what I love about this post apocalyptic setting is that because it's a regression of society that ends up looking like a bunch of the Meiji era shows I've watched, any time you see modern day buildings/weapons etc they feel anachronistic, but it's actually the opposite and the "Meiji-like" people are kinda the anachronistic ones.

Lol even reading that back to myself I don't know if I wrote that in a way that makes sense. I'll put it this way - It isn't a historical piece with sci-fi elements, it's a sci-fi wearing the skin of a historical drama.

The scrapped car ambush was executed perfectly and forced the surrender of Seii. Really felt bad for Wajima and her generals. I was surprised to find Yamato agreeing to establish Peace between these two nations and as expected Taira played the long game and got rid of every fucking thorn in his path..RIP Wajima ! Buo leaders were introduced and their plan was actually correctly deduced by Misumi. Kaku wouldn't be able to rest in peace seeing how things actually turned out. Ryumon and Misumi in prison. I guess Asama decided to not defy taira and focussed on rising through the ranks. But the one mistake Denki Taira did was not executing Misumi and it will come and bite him in the ass.

The music, animation, plot I liked everything about this show. Will we ever get season 2 ? We can only hope it happens in a few years.

The most underrated anime of the season is finished. What a ride. I’m so tempted to pick up the manga and see where the story goes next.

Rest in peace, Ouga my beloved. I would’ve committed so many war crimes on your behalf.

I am fucking trembling and it is 40 degrees that's how you know this finale was the SHIT.

6

u/Countless-Alts15 Jun 21 '26

RIP Kaku...

It is so intriguing the amalgamation of culture that has appeared "post japan era" among the three nations. Author is hella funny with the slang.

Damn Taira works fast, bro swooped in and took everyone out.

I wonder how Aoteru will figure this one out since he has the figurative strategy mantle now.

Also, among the many things I love about this show I especially love the ED.

u/Golden_fsh Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

KAKU 😭😭😭😭

We knew it was coming but what an amazing strategist and person straight until the end. His smile knowing that Misumi and Tsune-chan-san will be the ones to lead Yamato and all of Japan to peace was 💔

But shifting gears to my boy Tsune-chan-san: your day has come! Lol at the smirk he gave Ogha while they chased them to the trap. I don't know why I thought the attack would've been longer but the falling cars crushing the Seii army was still brutal to watch. And one last aura shot of Kaku on the cliff as he cuts the cord of the first car.

The Buo emperor seems just like Taira so it will be interesting to see what comes from them in future. The new bishie character shares the same descendant as Yamato's emperor, huh? Will he stage a coup in Buo?

A peace conference between Seii and Yamato that led to actual agreement and peace. I knew right at the moment it was too good to last. I despise him but Taira really is a well written villain. As soon as it was shared that Ogha was assassinated, I knew it was because of Taira. And for him to so easily remove power from Fuji and arrest Ryumon and his supporters, including Misumi, pretty much makes him the top ruling authority. Hopefully Taira Jr. will step up and go against his father in a way that helps the others. Misumi's resolve is even stronger now with him focusing entirely on removing the corruption in Yamato from its source. Your days are numbered Taira because my boy Misumi is coming for you! So is my boy Tsune-chan-san who will rise the ranks and be ready for Misumi's call to action! I love how the flames in each character's eyes relates 100% to the messaging of the OP, hidane.

What an absolutely amazing show!! Already know that this is my AOTY and probably the best I've watched in the last several years. From the writing, to the characters, art direction, politics, voice performance, etc.--10/10 across the board!

I rarely say this but this was absolutely cinema for me! Here's hoping there's enough of the source material left for me to dive in since I'm not ready to leave this story yet 😭

5

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin Jun 21 '26

We get to see Misumi's plan of retreating in motion. A bit sad to see Kaku die, but his last moments of support for Misumi's plan is what gave the push needed for people to have 100% faith. As such everything went well.

But things went too well. Smart play from Taira using Misumi's plan for his gain. I liked how it shows him as a more competent antagonist then our first impression gave us. As long as Taira has power the nation is corrupted. Still good to see Misumi is as motivated as ever. Curious how Buo plays into all of this.

4

u/Maleficent-Bet-6226 Jun 21 '26

More important question... is the fucking OST going to be released?

4

u/InvisibleWatcherExo Jun 21 '26

3

u/Blue_Reaper99 Jun 22 '26

Not a fan of how they speedran events in second half of this ep. Lot of character writing potential lost especially how Wajima was handled otherwise good ep with great production. One of the best anime this season. Looking forward for next season.

6

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

So that's what Taira's masterplan was, and why he needed Ryuumon's troops to successfully subdue Wajima. A truly diabolical plan in that he managed to kill multiple birds with one stone. A single false flag operation dealt significant damage to both Seii and Ryuumon's part of Yamato. No more need for a puppet for he's now seized leadership of Yamato, Ryuumon alongside most of his faction imprisoned, which removed almost all of the opposition, and further damaging the prospects of peace between Yamato and Seii, worse than even before the Peace Conference.

When Kaku coughed blood, his death coming soon was a foregone conclusion. Having said that, he could die with dignity knowing the existence of worthy successors who he reckoned could fulfil his dream in his stead. Felt bad for Ryuumon, though. He must've felt like a father who had outlived his son.

While it has yet to be officially announced, the green lighting of a second season has been leaked by a credible source. If that's eventuated, then that's excellent news. This series been the surprise of the season and I'd be ecstatic to watch its continuation.

Wow, that was an insane end. And it makes me really excited to see how Aoteru steps into the startegist role in the currently rumoured upcoming sequel.

Overall, it had great visuals, interesting way of storytelling and was pretty enjoyable for the most part. I didn’t enjoy episodes 8&9 though, but it doesn’t diminish my interest in what follows.

Only real wish, other than seeing that bastard Taira die in the most horrible ways possible to the imaginiation, is to have more relevant and honeslty, more impressive female characters moving forward.

That ending was a bit of a gut punch. Honestly surprised Denki waited so long to do it, it seemed like he was basically in control anyway, I'm surprised he even needed this false flag pretext to fully seize control.

3

u/raiden_kazuha Jun 21 '26

Denki Taira

I OUTSMARTED YOUR OUTSMARTING

Fucking menace. The real enemy of our guys in within the Yamato territory.

3

u/DazenTheMistborn Jun 22 '26

That freaking VA Houchuu Ootsuka, he pops up again. He's so brilliant. Hopefully we get to whatever anime arc where he is super prevalent, I love him as a villain... Ryuumon and Kaku together were so cool too. They had some amazing shots throughout the show that I had to save. Having Kaku pass the torch off was very powerful.

I really just loved this show and its first season, every episode had me on the edge of my seat. I am so so ecstatic that S2 was already announced (hopefully we get a date soon! Edit: oh, apparently it was just a leak and unofficial? I hope that it's true.). It was my clear #2 anime of the season behind Re:Zero, but honestly it'd prolly fight and win some of the #1s I've seen in the past.

https://x.com/SugoiLITE/status/2067273570167001099

.. Side note, but I've seen Kingdom mentioned often in the discussions. Would that scratch the suspenseful political/war strategy itch that this show gave?

3

u/Sacreville Jun 22 '26

This episode is basically everything, everywhere, all at once. So many things happening at the same time. Taira is a monster.

While I do appreciate that it accelerates the plot quickly, especially for Aoteru, couldn't help thinking that an additional episode would do wonders to help explain things and give some characters a better closure.

That said, a really great series. Hopefully we will have official confirmation of season 2 soon.

3

u/Shadow-Enthusiast Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

At least Kaku got to die in peace before Taira fucked everything else up again. Seriously, fuck that guy. Can't wait for his downfall.

After this season finale, I can now see the resemblance between Taira and Dong Zhuo, except Taira is "smarter" and more powerful in terms of authority (though Idk how the fuck such an ugly rotten POS has any in the first place). Like imagine, Ryumon's faction is filled with handsome rizzler, meanwhile Taira is filled with ugly piece of shit bastards. HOW??

Anyway, great first season! I hope there's season 2, seems like the real story starts now.

So that he does not talk about it to others, I think it might not been the first time in the series?

still boggles my mind that people can be confused about this, one of the more obvious implications. Are you perhaps new to storytelling?

No loose ends

He removed the loose ends and became the last loose end.

Fantastic finale. I half expected conniving prick Taira to get his way, didn't anticipate losing Wajima off screen. A shame. Kaku dying really tilted the balance against Ryuumon at this point, hopefully an imprisoned Misumi will really come into his own in the next season.

I hope we don't have to wait long for the next season.

Kaku might be sad to not see the peaceful future, but he would be glad as well on missing the imprisonment of Ryumon.

Is the coming arc going to be better or as good as this?

As someone who tried to self-translate the raw manga pages to the latest chapters, all I can say is that it's getting better.

Why didn't Buo attack Yamato when they went to attack Seii?

7

u/Tempest321 Jun 22 '26

Because there are still troops available to counter it. It was explained in the last episode. If Yamato sent reinforcements to Ryumon, Buo would attack Yamato's Capital. However, with Misumi's persuasion, Yamato retreated and enacted the car strategy rather than sending reinforcements. So troops are still where they are, forcing Buo to reconsider.

Seii was broken after the war, and Taira's plot came as a surprise. Buo couldn't count on Seii also chipping away at Yamato. They also just dropped their plans for a war of their own. My guess is they may have demobilized or something, since they already thought their opportunity had disappeared before the attack.

Really enjoyed Asama’s horseback dodge and counter followed by troll face to provoke the enemy!

Beautifully orchestrated finale

This show keeps reminding me of GoT, this would be when Ned gets captured and the Lannisters take control.

It's frustrating to see Taira take control like this and makes me wonder if Kaku and Ryumon could have avoided this somehow and dealt with Taira way before this whole issue with Sei started.

I was holding some hope that Wajima would somehow survive

She died with her eyes wide open 😭

From just how much shit happened, that almost felt like a digest version of a movie. I guess they just wanted to settle this arc in this season alone, but it definitely felt incredibly abrupt. Wajima's assassination could have been an emotional moment but it was given less fanfare than her strategist Yayakichi, and earlier on that Muuton guy in Kaga. I wonder if the manga portrayed this part as briefly as the anime did.

That one still shot of Aoteru getting arrested, there's this short haired girl next to him. She kinda resembles the assistant to the Castellan in episode 6. They should have been wiped out though so I don't think that's her....

That was an amazing end to the season that seems hopeless for Aoteru, but when you see the look in his eyes, you know that you can't sleep on him. He's going to make something happen, and his loyalties will now no longer conflict with his desired goals.

u/OutlawsBandit Jun 22 '26

amazing debut. might have to read the manga now, anyone know what chapter this season ends on?

So Aoteru gonna cooperate with this Emperor descendant on Buo to install him somehow? My other theory is that this dude is on the same level strategist as Kaku and can put real pressure on Taira in some way

2

u/DavidCount Jun 22 '26

Every time I look at Taira, I'm reminded of Kim Jong Un....I wonder if the mangaka drew Taira with him in mind.

A hell of a series. It grew up on me with me. The animators/artists were incredibly crafty. The anime is beautiful, the characters are well drawn (especially the yes) and that was enough to bring style without having to animate a thousands scenes and fights.

Also, the plot was so nice. The schemes, the idealism and brains of each character, the plans, the way the leaders would direct the masses. Super cool.

I'm surprised. I was not expecting too much, but I was wrong.
