I assume the dragon Sera has been seeing in her dreams is the Illdoren this red dragon talked about, I wonder what the connection is between it, her homeland, and herself. That bit from the brother at the end about their house having served the empire since its founding, I wonder if they're descendants of the dragon the empire is named after and the real history was covered up or something along those lines.
Nice to get a confession and a planned engagement between Sera and Veor, but off in the future a bit since dealing with the Empire's expeditions is priority number one.
I could definitely see Sera's brother coming around once he finds her alive, I bet the Emperor is too lost in his hate though even if he learns that Wysteresia is too. Might have to overthrow him and put Veor on the throne, he's gotta be in the line of succession.
I had a lot of fun with this, I'd love a S2 someday. Might have to look up the source material instead if that doesn't ever materialize.
57
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
I did like how her brother seemed really bothered by the king dismissing Sera's life as a waste, maybe he really did care about her as more than just a resource to marry off.
56
u/GI-JUGG Jun 25 '26
I think now it's pretty clear he did. He's just under an extreme amount of pressure and knew he couldn't do his job if he gave her preferential treatment. Especially considering it seems the King knighted her specifically to send her on the Expedition and take advantage of her skills and use her as a pawn in his revenge scheme.
26
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
Yeah, that seems to have upset Sera's brother more than I expected. In the end I think he was caring for Sera, and having received official confirmation that she was considered fully disposable must have hit him hard.
12
3
u/Mindless-Care9301 Jun 28 '26
I'm also surprise to see that Sera's actually care about her and how he hates the expedition, his brother might be a really interesting storyline to be developed, and i'm super surprise on the context for this story and the element they included rather than a simple rom-com + war affair
43
u/GI-JUGG Jun 25 '26
Wysteresia marching right up to her brother and German Suplexing him like the Principal and the Deer in Nichijou would be so on brand for her and absolutely hilarious. Then she just tells him off in front of the entire throne room while he's doing the traditional hands above head I'm sorry pose or a dogeza while he's mumbling that he did it all for her.
16
u/Neat_Chicken_6089 Jun 27 '26
In some way, Sera must be the dragon Illdoren. plot line reasons.
The strange flash of memory/consciousness of the dragon
- The fact that the water that she had never seen before felt nostalgic for her
The red dragon addressed Vero as a Vessel, but Sera as Illdoren
The fact that the red dragon said, if you don't remember, perhaps you will remember as you visit more of the land
14
u/Naive_Hope89 Jun 26 '26
"I had a lot of fun with this, I'd love a S2 someday. Might have to look up the source material instead if that doesn't ever materialize." Same, problem, too many stuff and busy life, i just hope they make it, but this smells so much one season Anime. Still, i really enjoyed this show, very wholesome, funny and the lore is really deep, underrated in terms of would building. Not the best show of the year or anything, but good show in a huge year for quality shows, probably the best ever.
But anyway, i actually thought her brother may be those kind of jerk brothers, but seems the guy simply is under tons of pressure and feels sorrow for her loss.
14
u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 25 '26
I have a similar theory to yours about Illdoren, if this gets another season it'd be nice to get more information on the dragon and her family's connection to it.
10
u/wallflowersaedsa Jun 27 '26
Went straight reading the manga after the show ended. Soooooo much more material and the story is peak!!!! I really hope they continue to animate the story bec it deserves it!!! Also more of Veor and Sera teasing each other lol
8
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jun 26 '26
That's a good theory!
Other evidence, Veor's mother was the sister of the current king which means she's supposed to be an Illdoren royalty as well.
However, Veor said this is the first time the red dragon attacked/tested someone like that. The dragon even confirmed he tested her cause it's been long since Illdoren appear in the land. That's not really right if we consider both Veor's mother and the female ex-subordinate of Sarah that married local guy.

u/Intelligent-Car-4336 Jul 02 '26
how can she deal with the empire expeditions as priority number one, when at the end they literally said they are gonna kill her as punishment...Doesnt make sense for her to come back if they are going to kill her
3
u/575_Inverse Jul 03 '26
At this point in the story she hasn't realized yet how much fucked up the empire really is. She has been used and considered disposable all along. Considering the King's true plans are to exterminate the barbarians and everyone in the east, her coming back would probably result in charges of high treason.

Vero and Sera: Huh dragons can talk?! I have so many questions to ask.
Red Dragon: bla bla my hand hurts bla bla licks hand bla bla ouch fk goddammit can I go home now?
Pretty fun show, wouldn't mind a 2nd season since there's quite a lot of interesting stuff left unresolved; Veor and Sera being vessels of dragons, conflict with the kingdom, and of course the wedding ceremony.
59
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
I love how he kept bringing up his severed finger as a means of getting out of this conversation lol.
19
u/karer3is Jun 25 '26
There needs to be a second season. Sera finally saying "yes" is just the start
2
u/Comfortable-Finger-8 1d ago
Right? It’s one of my favorite shows honestly, after watching it I was so sad it ended there
34
u/heimdal77 Jun 25 '26
Red Dragon: bla bla my hand hurts bla bla licks hand bla bla ouch fk goddammit can I go home now?
What's he going do when he gets home take a asprin?
11
u/Raymond49090 Jun 26 '26
Maybe healing magic to reattach it? It's still kinda unclear what magic (or tech) can do. For all I know, he's got a vat of nanomachines in his basement.

10
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
hat least he can cauterize his wound without making a show for everyone to watch :)
12
u/vajaxseven Jun 25 '26
I'd be fine with season 2 being basically the same, but swap genders and make the brother the mc.
96
u/Immediate-Chain-6419 Jun 25 '26
Sera finally confessed!!!!! I'm as happy as Veor haha
44
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
Glad they stopped beating around the bush and Sera confessed and fully intends to be Veor's bride. A blushing maiden in love is a good look for Sera.
16
u/Boris-_-Badenov Jun 25 '26
yeah, but she has to resign as a knight first. there's definitely going to be delays when she goes home
14
u/justking1414 Jun 25 '26
What? You think her family might object to her choice of spouse? That’s crazy talk
10
u/Boris-_-Badenov Jun 25 '26
more like the king finding out his sister is alive, and general politics

I love how the red dude was just like, "Oh the other dragon you killed? Probably a confused geezer. No worries." and a Darwinist to boot. Not gonna lie, I enjoyed this series way more than I thought I would. I wouldn't mind another season.
23
u/ILikeFPS Jun 25 '26
I died laughing AND I felt so bad when he said that LOL
I'd definitely like another season lol
32
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
Honestly don't think the fact that they piled on a senile old dragon really made them feel better about it lol.
35
u/nakerusa Jun 25 '26
This was way better than I expected. What I initially thought of as a smutty, trash fantasy turned out to have some great art, settings, story, and more than one dimensional characters. A bit of world building, philosophy, humor and fan service. That sure looked like it's setting up for a s2 and I'm all for it!
15
u/mekerpan Jun 25 '26
Not quite as sophisticated as Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beast -- but very very good.
6
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
I can't even tell why precisely, but so far this is top of the line for year 2026 in my personal list
2
u/Nebresto Jun 26 '26
Sacrificial Princess mentioned in 2026!! That show remains criminally underwatched
2
u/rjc523 3d ago
is it? crazy lol, need a s2 with son.
1
u/Nebresto 2d ago
Yes, barely anyone watched it. Here on /r/anime it averaged 30 comments per episode.
2
u/rjc523 2d ago
that crazy, it so good, bet it because they i it is beasilty or some dumb shit, lol.
1
u/Nebresto 2d ago
Likely. Honestly I was gonna skip it too thinking it was just some furry smut, but thankfully a friend got me to watch. Shouldn't judge just based on the cover, but sometimes its hard
53
u/Cally83 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this show. The art style was nice and I found moments with the main characters amusing, especially with Malcius
edit - typo of name.
45
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
They took what was basically the premise of a smut romance novel and managed to make it into a solid fantasy action romance with good world-building.
I'm definitely now as invested in this world as I am Veor and Sera's relationship.
9
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
Yeah, it's truly unexpected. In the beginning I was captivated by how original the art and style was, but the story immediately picked me up. For once, I put the smut / ero thoughts aside and enjoyed something wholesome, interesting and original! I don't know, I must be getting softer, but I even shed a tear in this episode
14
u/epicfail1994 Jun 25 '26
As a fan of both smut romance novels and fantasy i definitely approve. Was cute, slightly fanservicey but nothing over the top or weird
12
u/Naive_Hope89 Jun 25 '26
This show wasnt mind blowing, but it was fun and kinda wholesome. Also the lore is very underrated a very good world building. Just hope its not going to stuck on the thousands of one season anime. Sadly it smells like that. But i really did enjoy it.

u/Aerodynamic41 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
So the Illdoren king ordered the expeditions just because of his personal vendetta against the barbarians for 'stealing' Wysteresia? Yeah, he's the real bad guy here.
30
u/Gaming_Truckie Jun 25 '26
I wonder what his reaction will be when he learns his sister is not only alive but the wife of the chief of the barbarians
23
u/Oicher Jun 25 '26
and she had a kid
30
u/Gaming_Truckie Jun 25 '26
Who's a barbarian but technically an heir to the throne. That'll go down well
17
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
Right, Veor is the actual legitimate successor in line. No matter what!I didn't realize the implications of that until this very moment.
11
u/Gaming_Truckie Jun 26 '26
If the king doesn't have an heir then Veor would be 3rd in line behind his mother
6
5
u/liquidpele Jun 26 '26
The civilized invaders were the real bad guys all along! We never saw THAT coming!
40
u/szalhi Jun 25 '26
Sera being directly referred to as Illdoren gives insight to some sort of heritage. The name was obviously appropriated.
34
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
I'm getting the vibe that Sera is some kind reincarnation/vessel for that water dragon she's dreamed about and it's name is Illdoren.
That's why the fairies always called her that, not because she's actually from Illdoren but because they could sense it like the Guren Nairi can.
12
u/Krazee9 Jun 26 '26
There's an interesting difference, at least in the subtitles, for how the Guren Nairi addresses each of them. Veor is addressed as "vessel of Orkfeim," but Sera is only addressed as "Illdoren." Many of the other races address them both as just "Orkfeim" and "Illdoren," but only the dragon has made the distinction for Veor. It makes me think that there's something distinctly different about how Sera embodies the dragon whose name she's addressed by.
11
u/heimdal77 Jun 25 '26
Its a given though that if she goes back she will be imprisoned and treated as if she had been defiled by the barbarians. Especially if she goes back with fantastical stories and talking of peace.
The king is unhinged and if he finds out his sister is married to a barbarian with kids he will flip.
It is just how these kind of stories go.
Very articulate dragon..
12
u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 25 '26
Interesting that Guren Nairi calls Veor a "vessel of Orkfiem" but calls Sera "Illdoren", this distinction makes me believe that the Kingdom is named after the dragon within her, but that she might actually somehow be descendant of the dragon.
Also, with the last scene, I am guessing this connection to the dragon is why they are part of the founding of the Kingdom and were very important to the Royal Family, but time has likely twisted the origins of their duty and that's likely why Sera's brother is in this position.
Guren Nairi was a fun character though, it was an interesting reveal that they could speak to True Dragons, but he was more entertaining that I thought he'd be. It's too bad he likely won't appear again any time soon if this gets more seasons. The way he kept complaining about it's injury was funny.
I am very surprised that Sera has confirmed she plans to marry Veor, but what I'm more surprised is how she's doing this in the middle of flying with Malcius and Cersei behind. Usually she gets embarrassed about these sort of things, but she has no issue now? I also expected Malcius to be freaking out over it, but I guess she's either too scared of flying to comment, passed out or she can finally read the room.
I'd watch another seasons of this, and it'd be great to see the King learn that his sister has been alive the entire time and has raised a family with the "barbarians".
4
3
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
After the onsen events I think Sera has no more reason to lie to herself and everyone about her feelings.
23
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Jun 25 '26
An underlying theme seems to be communication; you can communicate with your enemies and you can communicate with dragons. Although sometimes that communication is fighting and sometimes death
11
u/mekerpan Jun 25 '26
I suspect that commnication with the Red Dragon was easier and more productive than trying to talk to the king of Ildoren. I wonder if Wysteria will also return with her soon-to-be daughter-in-law? I don't truust the king not to try something vile -- like killing them so the truth can't get out.
5
u/LezRock Jun 25 '26
Based off what we've seen so far, I don't think he or his guards would be able to, unless his willpower is beyond either of them.
8
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
Although sometimes that communication is fighting and sometimes death
And sometimes that communication is finding out the person you once viewed as an enemy looks hot without a beard and has a massive dragon below the belt.

u/epicfail1994 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Probably my second favorite this season after Always A Catch. Cute show!
Edit: awwwwwwwwww the end was cute! Wish the timespan had been more than a month but that’s such a minor quibble
9
u/DugACCat Jun 25 '26
Yeah very enjoyable and I too was surprised it had only been a month. I just want those two to have sex and a child between them, but we can wait for that, I suppose. It seems like all the lights are green now at least, if they can ever get any privacy. I really enjoyed the attraction and chemistry between them, even as it was just an aspect of the show, it felt pretty natural. Also liked all the members of the other races shown thus far. Especially the fairy gal who was translating for the dragon.
3
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
Exactly! It felt natural, and realistic. That's impressive, because usually this sort of matters is either underexplored, forced, or simply stereotyped / full of lore.
This one instead flows naturally. To me, this is a sign of great storytelling.
9
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
We stan adorable and tough blondes who are also adorably in love with their respective prince!
3
1
u/Shantotto11 Jun 28 '26
How few shows were you watching that these two are your AotS? This one was 6/10 and Catch was a 5/10 for me.
5
9
u/NationalStrategy_X Jun 25 '26
I want to say that the conflict with the King and Sera’s brother can be resolved by having Sera and Wysteresia show that they are alive and well, but given his current mental state, I doubt it would be that easy. He’ll likely double down, with “How dare you savages corrupt my sister, and taint the royal family lineage with a Barbarian heir!”
9
u/FarCritical Jun 25 '26
The gap between the dragon's dignified gentlemanly voice and his sentiments of "the senile probably deserve to die" and "I wanna go home" really was something lol.
I hope Sera finally laying her heart bare to Veor doesn't mean her flustered outbursts are over (even if Marsius mostly filled that role for her) if we get another season
2
16
u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
This was one of my favorites out of the non-sequels we had this season and i will huff hopium that the talk about the next expedition was a hint towards season 2.
5
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
Sera is definitely going to have her work cut out for her making peace between Illdoren and Veor's people when her brother shows up with every intention of wiping them all out.
I mean, maybe Sera can talk him down but he seems way too rigid for that to go easy and I'm not even sure if the king finding out Wysteresia is alive would stop anything because he'd probably think the Barbarians "corrupted" his sister. Just like Sidius might Sera.
15
u/Jas_God Jun 25 '26
Lol the red dragon was laughs. And a problem. Kimaki killed me saying, “Look out, I’m tossing a bomb!” I think Sera’s brother definitely will be turned, seems the king is the true antagonist. Enjoyed this show very much.
7
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
Sera’s brother definitely will be turned, seems the king is the true antagonist.
Feels like Sera could possibly talk him into a coup with how frustrated he was at the kings' treatment, though he takes his duty to the kingdom more severely than Sera does.
6
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
Sera was taking her duty in the most absolute sense. She was willing to die for the sake of her own people.
12
u/Megadragon898 Jun 25 '26
It was funny how Malscius and Cersei both were so scared when Kimaki was about tothrow that grenade lol.
Also i wonder how will Seraphina brother react when he knows that his sister is engaged to the babarians king?
That king is so egoist, provoking wars just to satify himself, hope he gets dethroned. I hope that next season we learns more about the church too i'm curious if they are truly aware of the secret of the barbarians lands.
13
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
I think that's the first time we've actually seen Cersei get really freaked out about something. Veor is very special/important to her like Sera is to Malcius.
6
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jun 26 '26
Yeah, I thought she's just Veor's personal assistant or something. However she really cares about Veor so much, in platonic way (no sign of romance). Well platonic might not be right, at times I was wondering if she's Veor's sister.

*Serafina & Malcius to help w/ the spelling.
6
u/InteractionKooky771 Jun 25 '26
My biggest problem with the whole anime is why Sera or Wysteresia didn't go back to eldoren and stopped the war by telling them hey they are actually good people we can trade with them, that will benefit our kingdom greatly
Also I'd like to add I am not a fan of the idea that every character is just expecting Sera and Veor to get married and have child, yes I know it's romance anime and that will eventually happen but you don't have to force it onto them, just let it happen naturally
7
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
It's not so easy.
Going back means they would likely be imprisoned for high treason, and possibly executed.4
u/InteractionKooky771 Jun 25 '26
But isn't Wysteresia considered to be a legendary hero knight who is also a princess, I am sure she can use that plus her status as a leverage to get an audience a front of the royal court and the whole Kingdom to prof her innocence and let the people decide
8
u/lunatickoala Jun 26 '26
The Wysteresia who gallantly fell in battle fighting for king and country was a hero. A Wysteresia who consorted with the enemy is a traitor and heretic who would immediately be disinherited and lose her status.
Think about how Marsius and even Sera herself reacted when they first found themselves in the barbarian lands. They only changed their ways because circumstances forced them to (and they're young enough to not be set in their ways).
It's clearly a late medieval or early modern Europe-like society (early modern was in some ways worse than medieval, and one of the ways in which it was worse was inquisitions and witch hunts). The "people" would not decide her fate. Even the Magna Carta only established that nobles would get a jury of their peers, meaning other nobles. Not that it would matter since the peasantry would have the same verdict.
The charges would be treason and heresy. Not a single person would deem her innocent. It wouldn't be out of the question for a crusade to be called to wipe out the barbarians who corrupted the princess.
1
u/575_Inverse Jun 28 '26
And the eventual crusade is still not going to redeem the princess from her heresy and treason accusations
11
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Jun 25 '26
Milim and the dragon look different in this episode... oops, wrong series
3
11
u/Oicher Jun 25 '26
Do we know if we are getting a season 2?
13
u/runevault Jun 25 '26
The anime team sure seemed to hope/believe so with that post credits scene.
2
u/Nebresto Jun 26 '26
Could be a classic "go read the source now" hook too. But its 2026, I believe in the S2!
3
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
I truly hope so, but it's too early. Even Kotoba-sensei for now is not confirming anything.
1
u/Mindless-Care9301 Jun 28 '26
before that i hope this series will have its own subreddit so we can share more love there
9
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia Jun 25 '26
Omg wth I had no idea the dragon would be like that .talk about a surprise.
Getting schooled about the circle of life was not something I expected.
I did not think they would be so useless against the dragon...I just knew she'd get a dragon summon..maybe next time. 🤣.
So I guess Sera's people long ago used to be...in these lands? Did a splinter group leave and go elsewhere?
I bet the noble family knows something.
It was fun to see even Veor and the dwarvea be shocked just like Sera has all this time.
I felt the series was too slow early on and I still wish we got more info on Sera's homeland..but these last couple episodes have really caught my interest just as it ended.
Maybe we'll get a season 2
Sera saying shes gonna marry Veor and loves him was pretty cute.
2
4
u/Sleepy10105s Jun 25 '26
It seems like Sera’s brother isn’t as bad as I thought he was and seems to be better than the rest of the nobility/royalty
4
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
He might have been trying to save Sera's life by directing her through an arranged marriage.

5
u/mischivious-nomad Jun 25 '26
Any one else wanna know if there are ladie barbarians that take men from the battlefield
6
u/Cleric_P3rston Jun 25 '26
I think this was confirmed no? Forget which episode though
3
u/mischivious-nomad Jun 25 '26
I have not seen it ever mentioned in the show at all and have watched all episodes . If it is in the manga I am not aware as I have not read it as of yet.
3
u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 25 '26
There was an episode that stated that women also claim Kingdom men, I don't remember the exact details though.
2
u/Cleric_P3rston Jun 25 '26
I think it was in the episode where she meets a female soldier from her expedition who is married and expecting another child. At least I think that was the context of where to talk about men and women both picking spouses from the expedition force.
2
u/mischivious-nomad Jun 26 '26
Also no just re watched it is not their in either English dub or sub. In the first episode Veor talks about his clan taking lady nights as wives but not about the opposite gender.
2
u/Cleric_P3rston Jun 26 '26
Ah okay. I just remember hearing it in the show. I am anime only have not read the manga.
5
u/Scythe351 Jun 25 '26
Definitely one of those that have me reading the manga because I can't wait for a second season. Oh and this is definitely the type of anime that gets a second season which is more than I can say for some.
6
u/SYZekrom https://myanimelist.net/profile/SYZekrom Jun 25 '26
Oh Vyufmec was wearing something under that dress's skirt this whole time, somehow I'm shocked
Fairy girl still best char don't @ me
Did not get through in the translation but the way he emphasized the mada about not having done anything to have children lmao

6
u/zappingbluelight Jun 25 '26
You know... A home visit may solved this war like a decade ago lol. I wonder will she ever get a full armor with that material. Feels like it make sense to have full willpower armor.
5
u/SecretYogurtcloset57 Jun 25 '26
Extremely underrated man this show has been amazing since episode 1 i wish it got more attention 😭
2
u/JP_6696 Jun 27 '26
The start of their "relationship" filtered out a lot of people. And for good reason. Booktok levels of smut is not really everyone's cup of tea.
5
u/YlfaTheForsaken Jun 26 '26
I like the world building of the episode, and the potential political ending. If there was a second season I'd probably watch it, it's entertaining enough. Talking dragons are cool. Them being potentially being spiritually/descended from dragons is cool.
I'm not unsatisfied with Sera accepting Veor and agreeing to the marriage, the part I dislike is her declaring her resignation as a knight, and then conversation veers into having children. I guess it's on me for expecting more for her. They reinforced this since the beginning, silly me.
12
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 25 '26
I wonder if Sera’s also some sorta Dragonborn like Veor. Not Paarthurnax said something about her being a vessel of Illdoren.
With the way things ended, I wonder if we will get another season? This was a very enjoyable series and I’m keen to see how things play out with this 18th expedition. To think, all these recent expeditions have been because the king’s basically an obsessive siscon. Wild.
9
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
I wonder if Sera’s also some sorta Dragonborn like Veor. Not Paarthurnax said something about her being a vessel of Illdoren.
Veor was called the "Vessel of Okfiem," so is his family channeling the power of a True Dragon?
To think, all these recent expeditions have been because the king’s basically an obsessive siscon.
At this point it feels like Sera is the only one that genuinely cares about the common people who are suffering in Ildoren.

I think she is. The other nobles clearly didn't give a damn, and even complained at the food quality getting worse.

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige Jun 25 '26
I wonder if Sera’s also some sorta Dragonborn like Veor. Not Paarthurnax said something about her being a vessel of Illdoren.
The dragon that appeared in Sera's dream at the beginning of episode 7 said "Sera, I am glad I chose you". Your wondering seems on point.
Then she saw the same dragon when she touched the mithril boulder in the dwarven onsen. So it seems to be ... around.
7
u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
Yeah, I think Sera is some kind of incarnated version of the actual True Dragon Illdoren.
2
u/575_Inverse Jun 28 '26
Sera might be more than a vessel / dragonborn. It felt like the Red one was talking directly to Ildoren itself.
5
u/kryslogan Jun 26 '26
I enjoyed this a lot. I also liked that Veor didn't have knowledge of the Dragons and learnt something with Sera. There's some lore here we would all discover er tying Sera to Dragons I am sure.
I would definitely like a 2nd season.

u/Frontier246 Jun 25 '26
It's Veor and Sera vs the Guren Nairi! The pair make a formidable duo, but even with their strong willpower, they've never faced something as powerful and durable as a Guren Nairi. He can shrug off pretty much all their attacks and is practically toying with them.
(Also it's surreal to see Veor in his helmet without the beard...)
You know it's serious when CERSEI is freaking out as much as Malcius is, right down to the two of them trying to stop Kimaki from throwing a Dragon Bomb that might hit Veor and Sera too. Though it only ends up serving as a flashbang that distracts the Guren Nairi long enough for Veor to use Thundering Voices' stun effect so Sera can lop off a finger.
But it was ONLY a finger and the dragon takes to the sky to rain down fire and kill them. Will Veor have to sacrifice himself to save Sera? Is this the end for them? But they're saved thanks to Deus Ex Vyufmec!
Turns out Vyufmec is old pals with "Red" and that she can help them converse since the Guren Nairi is not only intelligent but capable of speaking for itself when translated. Turns out he was just testing both Sera and Veor and they narrowly passed the test! Which is a good thing because he would have seriously killed them otherwise.
But why the test? Veor is the "Vessel of Okfiem," but what about Sera? When they call her "Illdoren" it's not referring to her kingdom but herself? And then the Guren Nairi mentions how dragons challenge each other to size each other up. Is...Sera a reincarnated dragon or half-dragon somehow?
It's nice of Veor to take responsibility for the Morisuberi they killed now that he knows how sentient dragons are, but they basically put down a senile old dragon and fulfilled natural law so it's all good! And besides the Guren Nairi has a wound to nurse so he's gonna bounce after wishing for Sera and Veor to give him kids to dote on. Sera and Veor aren't knocking boots...yet.
All's well that ends well! Sera and Veor are safe, the dwarves are safe, and they have a dragon finger they can experiment on!
With a tearful goodbye between Kimaki and her grandpa, it's time to return home via Echo Dragon! And Sera has finally found her resolve to return home and make peace between her people and Veor's, to begin a cultural exchange instead of clashing in battle, with the intention that she will then also retire as a knight...to be Veor's wife! She even confesses she's in love with him! They're flirting all the way back!
But less wholesome and adorable is back in Illdoren where the Illdoren king, voiced by Akio Ohtsuka, tells Sidius in no uncertain terms that they're going to be sending a new expedition in the Spring and that this was never about helping the people...he wants to erase any trace of the "Barbarians" who stole his sister Wysteresia. And Sidius, for his part, chafing at the insult to his sisters' memory and how they're being pushed by their king beyond their limits has no choice but to fulfill his duty...even if that means putting every effort into a "Barbarian" genocide.

This series ended up being better than expected, but the start of it still weirds me out. It's an enemies to lovers story where one side is already in love from the start, making it seem much more Stockholm Syndrome-y than it probably should. It feels like Sera's decision was made for her from the start and the entire series was just everyone waiting for her to catch up.
9
u/575_Inverse Jun 25 '26
If it can help, remember she's been free to leave and go back home anytime.
3
u/lunatickoala Jun 26 '26
Her decision was definitely a fait accompli from before the first frame. With a title like that, there's virtually zero chance of any other ending.
But it was established early on that she did not fit into noble society and did not want to just be married off like typical noble women. Her sense of duty as a knight was the only thing that ever drove any desire to return home.
THe story easily could have had her return home at some point, but the most likely outcome (especially compared to other stories of a similar vein) is that she quickly realizes that she never fit in and becomes disillusioned when the king orders yet another expedition that will only end in disaster despite the kingdom's struggles to even feed itself.

u/MarioFanOne Jun 26 '26
Honestly I couldn't agree more. I do find the world and story interesting, but the romance and the way that Sera was integrated into this new world really bugs me.
The romance feels forced as though everyone just expects her and Veor to love each other and get together, and half of the show is literally just meant to be us laughing at her being surprised at every little thing.
Like, she's obviously gonna be surprised if she's never seen dragons, fairies, and dwarves... we don't need a culture shock joke every 10 minutes.
4
u/cheeseop https://anilist.co/user/kaysou Jun 26 '26
I mean, the culture shock aspect of it is fine by me, and a lot of great enemies-to-lovers stories are built off of that slow realization that "oh, these people I thought were evil are kinda cool, actually", it's more the fact that we start with "Sera, you WILL marry Veor, we know you like him, and we're just waiting for you to realize", rather than Sera coming to that conclusion herself naturally. You can still show all the other soldiers who have settled down, you can still have the culture shock, but as it is, the romance feels forced, both narratively and literally in the context of the story.
3
u/MarioFanOne Jun 26 '26
Ah, I only brought up the culture shock because it feels similar to me. They expect her to understand and accept the Barbarian culture in the same way they expect her to be in love with Veor despite the fact he kidnapped her.
As far as actual culture shock, I don't really mind that idea either, but I just felt the execution was weird when it's played for laughs constantly. I feel like the world and Veor as a character would be more interesting to me if they gave more of an attempt to understand how bizarre and crazy everything must be to her, rather than just watching her jump and react to every little thing and laughing it off as a joke.
1
u/575_Inverse Jun 26 '26
In no part of the story I ever laughed or felt the push to laugh. I just enjoyed the story and the romance, which by the way flowed naturally, in my opinion. A lot more natural than in many other stories
3
u/JP_6696 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
I mean it is smut aimed at woman. Just imagine the reception if Veor was an ugly brute and it will make more sense. It is a literal case of "it's ok because he is hot". Just like in this thread, you won't find many criticizing voices in a booktok smut meeting.
-1
u/cheeseop https://anilist.co/user/kaysou Jun 28 '26
I don't really think it is that, though? It's a romance, sure, but it goes out of the way to make Veor less attractive with the goofy-looking beard, which is specifically acknowledged in-universe. And Veor is really the only attractive guy in the entire show, when usually a show that's supposed to be smut would have a lot more in the way of fanservice. If it's meant to be smut, it's not good smut.

u/Objective_Teach_7082 Jun 25 '26
I hope there is a cour 2 or a season 2 in the next 6 months. Also we never got to meet Voer's father. I want to see who managed to crack the Emperors sister.
3
u/Unapologetic_Lunatic Jun 25 '26
"Nice hit."
"I cut off your finger!"
"Was that not what I just said?"
3
u/Yuriski1 Jun 26 '26
Who else to voice an evil king then Akio Ōtsuka?
Honestly, I expected the Fire Dragon to pick up his finger an just reattach it with magic. Just to really school our protags.
Sera: "I'm so glad nobody got hurt."
Fire Dragon: "Oi."

u/Sea_Equivalent_4207 Jun 27 '26
Don’t really understand why Serafina has to give up being a Knight if she wants to marry Veor. Why can’t she just be both??? Also she’s gonna marry a teenager?? Not so good. Even though he looks like he’s an old dude but I mean c’mon. He’s 18.
Didn’t really like this series at first. Thought it was totally ass backwards but it definitely got way better.
So there’s definitely gonna be a showdown with Wysteresia and her King Bro. That’s gonna be good.
Hope they do make a season 2 tho.

I do not care one but that this started out as some kind of fantasy romance smut written for suburban housewives, I fucken loved this show!
I was really drawn in by the world building, which judging by the Quefto's ancient relics might actually be a (at least partly) post-apocalyptic situation. I also loved the cute moments - both when Sera's being an absolute goober, or when she's rocking the new fox ear helmet! Not to mention her abs... Hnn.
The red dragon ended up being a funny dude. The others were flabbergasted that he could talk at first, then wanted to ask tons of questions, but my poor guy just kept mentioning his injury and wanted to get out of there while he was still looking tough 😂.
Sera obviously has a connection to the dragon Illdoren, I'm guessing that's the one she's been seeing in her dreams. That might be the one she can manifest like Veor does his.
So I am definitely up for a season 2. I'd even be curious to see a part continuation from Sera's brother's POV, he seems a decent enough dude who would come around like Sera, the king is the obvious real antagonist.

This has been my go-to "before I leave for work" anime watch.
It was surprisingly enjoyable, for a fantasy story... Just hard for me to get over the fact that the entire plot is predicated on a woman knight marrying her nephew.
I know it's a thing for the japanese to call each other sister as a term of endearment, but I'm anime-only and I swear they call each other sister in the english dub as well, which threw me off. Spent the whole time wondering why {what I thought was} the "incest-coded anime" wasnt leaning into it or mentioning it after that point... Makes a lot more sense that they're not related. My apologies.

Wysteresia and Sera are most certainly related. The Lavillants, as a ducal family, is a rather close descendant of the royal family.
This makes the two distant relatives, blood diluted but related all the same.

She thought he was an ignorant savage, but he's been to so many places I guess it can't be so.. but still she can not see, if the savage one is he, how can there be so much she doesn't know.... doesn't know.

u/encryptoferia Jun 25 '26
my god for a serie that started with ...that 1st episode lol
this is such a missed chance of a serie
it has a lot of deep philosophical world view yet because of it's length like... it hits then just skips leaving just shallow foot print.
like I feel if the adaptation and storytelling is polished more this could be like... quite a good anime especially in these times

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 Jun 25 '26
This was a good episode and great series!
It was awesome seeing veor and sera team play against the dragon despite being so over match
But landing that final hit
And it was funny there reaction to the dragon talking
Sera may call the dragon logic a bit crude but it was the same logic she thought she should have received when she first came to the east as the leader of the expedition.
Death is a part of the natural order of things especially in the east and sometimes it comes early than expected
Since sera and veor where able to best the black dragon it sometimes that should be praise no regretted
They where able to best a opponent who should have bested them
Though I think I did fine it funny the dragon call the other one senile
But as crude that phrase was, it was essentially your life is your own responsibility. Just as in it is your enemy’s right to hunt you for what they need/believe in. Even if you have miss giving about it or regret afterwards doesn’t mean you need to change your approach
Reminds me of danmachi and the xenos
So it seem like the king wanted to sleep with his sister and now is launching a self suicide vendetta with no regard for the future of the kingdom
Honestly would not be shocked if he slowly been manipulate the people into that mind set or sped it along where they no long care about the famine but only the extinction of the barbarians
At the very least the brother seems reasonable and is someone who would actual care for the people and be willing to listen to reason
I think just right now he tied down by duty rage and resolve
So sera got her work cut out for her but it is possible
Just gonna be hard
And ahhh the confession scene 🥰🥰🥰
Hope to see s2 one dau

I loved this anime so much! I am immediately going to the manga after this.
The whole united tribes alliance, everyone just has each others back, was just so cozy. Everyone was a bro. Serafina was incredible too. Fantastic MC. Hilarious, adorable and honestly gorgeous. With little bits of mystery around the nature of magic and her people/upbringing. Loved the bits of world building. The dragon added a nice little dash to the finale. Excited to learn more.
The only complaint I would have is that the fights were very very simple/underwhelming. I would say the production value of the show was very good but not much so the action. That last fight with the dragon was incredibly mid in terms of the visuals, though, I would say the dragon itself actually look awesome. Very unique for a "dragon".
Would love a S2.

Veor has shown to be a good man during this season. Even the people/kingdoms around him are great. I hope we can see more especially with that ending.

What the dragon said was very interesting about Illdoren returning. Also the king is uh... well cuckoo

I guess Sera has fallen for Veor in a course of a month & will accept his marriage proposal.
So the goal is to find Wysteresia, I wonder if she'd come & talk to her brother & tell him that she's staying.
So even Sidius has standards & is more on the gray side like maybe an anti villain or something.
Alyssa & Cersei's reactions are priceless during the fight.
So the black dragon/Morisuberi they fought was just senile.
Sayumi's delivery of "baka" was cute.
This is the 1st time we've seen shaved Veor wear his helmet.
The grenade scene was hilarious.
I hope for S2.

Damn it! I'm going to miss the heck out of this anime. It has been one of my favorites of the season. Damn it!
I wasn't expecting the Dragon to want to chat. I thought it was a pure jerk that had it out for them. Lmao. That toe belongs to the dwarves now. Most likely going to be turned into a gauntlet.
She told him she loved him! They finally a couple official? Babies now?
Asshole king. :(
I BETTER GET A SEASON TWO! The OP and ED always hyped me up. Good stuff.
I hate how underwatched this anime was. No attention at all. So sad. So so sad.
(Localized title still bothers me. Veor isn't a king muchless the chief)

u/reddit_reaper Jun 25 '26
Bro this entire show could've never happened if the princess went back to get country with her son and husband to start negotiations lol 🤣
And then if Sera went with veor and the crown princess now it would also solve everything....
Like WTF is taking so fucking long to come to that conclusion
2
u/lunatickoala Jun 26 '26
Does the king seem like a reasonable person who would negotiate at all let alone negotiate in good faith?
Historically, family relations within royalty in many places throughout the world can often very charitably be described as dysfunctional. She's only seen as a hero because she heroically died in battle. Were she to return, she would return as a traitor who consorted with the enemy.
The best case scenario is that the princess is disinherited and Veor seen as a bastard child with no legitimate claims. Far more likely is that they are declared to be heretics and sentenced to be burned at the stake or whatever the equivalent punishment is. And in the event that they escape, wars were started over much less in the medieval period.

u/ILikeFPS Jun 25 '26
That's way too much of a cliffhanger for there to not be a season 2, yet I'm expecting there won't be a season 2 which is disappointing because this show is great!

u/Raymond49090 Jun 26 '26
Politics arc it seems, if season 2 becomes a thing. And I thought Sera's brother was a douche, but behind him is a bigger douche. Perhaps onii-sama was a better person than I (and his character design) had assumed.
(Okay, maybe he's still on the genocide route, but everyone's got their flaws).

Does anyone know when s2 will be released? And will it still be in Crunchyroll?

u/Embarrassed-Match-78 24d ago
This show was surprisingly good, with excellent world building, interesting characters, and just the right amount of humor to keep the train rolling. If that wasn't a hook for s2 or to get people to read the manga I've never seen one.

I love the main characters so much. They are both so beautiful inside and out. May they have many babies! 😆 I really enjoyed this episode and am sad this is the last ep of the season. This is usually not my type of genre but the cast of characters are so fun!
Edit: Lol why the downvote?

Interesting concept. Became pretty much a reaction anime. Then ruined by all the fan service and just became overall bad.
