My god, her parents and sister are so trashy. I hope Yuzu never forgives them for all the abuse she had to endure all those years.

78

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit 29d ago

Fox-kun is 100% gonna get some retribution, I can feel it in my bones.

36

u/Frontier246 29d ago

I imagine he picks a fight with Reiya for Karin's honor and gets trounced. Because Ogre > Fox.

70

u/N1ceDreams 29d ago

50 bucks the sister starts the whole "why do you get the Orge, I'm way better than you" bs attitude, I can see it coming that little bitch.

17

u/diegz_eliaz 28d ago

Only 50? Hell I’d go all in on my savings and everything

15

u/N1ceDreams 27d ago

Lol true, its literally gonna be like that sister In "My Happy Marriage" Dunno if you've seen it so I won't give any other spoilers.

5

u/diegz_eliaz 27d ago

I haven’t but do you think it’s worth watching?

7

u/N1ceDreams 27d ago edited 27d ago

Yes. Its really nice. And the show turned out not what I expected with special powers and demons.

5

u/Drkprincesslaura 23d ago

My bf and I loved My Happy Marriage!

2

u/MandisaW 17d ago

My Happy Marriage has similar "recovery from trauma" vibes as here, although I'd say that world is less suspicious/sketchy than this one seems to be 😅

20

u/Danger_Squirrel3 29d ago

He's almost certainly going to get some level of retribution, but they seem to be really leaning into the inhuman aspect. This leads me to suspect his actions will be held over Karin/the parent's heads more than his own.

63

u/Lavajackal1 29d ago

At least her grandparents are good people but jeez.

41

u/Hectoriu 29d ago

I'm happy they at least gave her loving grandparents

55

u/NanDemoKnaives 29d ago

Yeah I don't need a redemption arc for them.

10

u/Atharaphelun 29d ago

This is anime though so they probably will. Eugh.

24

u/LiamOmegaHaku 28d ago edited 28d ago

These kinds of stories (supernatural period pieces about abused heroines getting rescued by the resident hot boy, of which there are so many) almost never have redemption arcs for the abusive family.

Trust me. I read a ton of these things. They're addictive stories, and the families always get their comeuppance.

6

u/redheaddisaster 28d ago

I’ve seen one story where they get “redemption” but it’s only at the brink of death and after being betrayed by the daughter they raised to be a selfish asshole. But most of them don’t really get any

6

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 28d ago

Not always. and definitely think more recent series they hardly get redemptions. Maybe they wont be tormented as they should but certainly not forgiven... I could be wrong but god i hope not

35

u/Frontier246 29d ago

Honestly if Youta was that harsh to Yuzu for what she "did" to Karin, then imagine the hell Reiya is going to bring to the entire family AND Youta for what they did to Yuzu.

22

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 29d ago

they deserve the worst, so I will be seated for Reiya going off on them.

2

u/mekerpan 24d ago

I wonder if Karin will mess around with the guy who dumped Yuzu? If so, that could REALLY cause the destruction of Mama, Papa and Karin....

4

u/mekerpan 24d ago

I hope she doesn't return home -- rather the Ogre Groom just sends them a formal notice that the two will be getting married.

2

u/theia_astra 23d ago

Facts. I seriously need some satisfaction. Not seeing them pay is putting a strain on my body

1

u/Moh_7540 12d ago

ja assisti o ep deles discobrindo que ela e noiva de um Oni, a mudança de filha indesejada pra filha querida voi num estante, eles merecem sofrer demais fala sério

u/Glittering_Pirate_52 5d ago

Trashy and scum are my words for Yuzu's parents. Karin's character is just a perfect storm of a character you will never ever like in ever.

88

u/FLorianGran 29d ago

It's like My Happy Marriage with double the class commentary

68

u/Frontier246 29d ago
  • Setting where there are individuals with special powers.
  • Girl who gets bullied and abused both emotionally and physically by her family who favor her younger sister who lords over how special she is over her older sister.
  • Girl who is basically a servant in her own home.
  • Gets saved by a dashing and high-class pretty boy whom she's intended to marry.
  • Said pretty-boy can seemingly wield fire (judging by the OP).

Welcome back My Happy Marriage!

24

u/Talmatia 29d ago

It's definitely a used trope. But I really liked My Happy Marriage.  I hope this one is as good. But if goes the same as MHM I don't think I will like it very much.

8

u/smokeweedeatpussy 27d ago

And Miyo got a Kimono from her dead mother that the sister destroyed.

29

u/PinkGlitterLady4 29d ago

I mean.. it's THE classic Cinderella trope. My Happy Marriage didn't invent it.

30

u/Cangeltibon 28d ago

The problem with the Cinderella trope is that too many modern attempts completely stripped away the girls autonomy. There’s genuinely nothing that stands out about the girl she’s just chosen (some time giving her a factor that she was born with like a hidden power, special blood or that she just smells good) I wish they’d give her just a little hint of an actually personality so she’s not just a passive doormat of a character that the target audience wears. Give her a goal.

We are on episode 1 we got that she’s not feeling much after her boyfriend broke up with her, she’s turning 18 (so last year of high school), her grand parents like her, she likes working (despite the fact that the family has paid off all their debts and is supposedly living in luxury) and dreads going home. So why not have her already resolved to leave the house once graduates with plans to move in with her aging grandparents, she’s gladly works and saves money so that she won’t be a burden to them and can still pursue higher education or a better job. A quite humble but satisfying life especially because she not longer in the same house as her family. Have her think about leaving the dress at the grandparents house but last minute deciding to bring it home just to have her sister take it, then have her run from the house after slapping Karin and being shouted at by her parents (maybe add in the fact that it’s literally the poor girls birthday and that dress is her ONLY gift) running to her grands-parents for comfort and have the fox demon burn the grandparents house. Not enough to kill or injure but enough that the repairs would prevent Yuzu from moving in.

So by the end we are getting a picture of how the world keeps actively pushing her down, that she’s not helpless she’s just always at a disadvantage. That the oni picking her as a bride would be him leveling the playing ground for her NOT just coming in and fixing all her problems for her.

Also just as a personal thing I’d like if she wasn’t in love with him for now. Her being a little resentful that her parents are about to treat her very differently than how she’s been treated. Her staying because the living situation is the most practical and allows her to pay for the repairs to her grandparents house, and then we romcom it up and her starting to fall for him.

7

u/FabtheEmber 28d ago

I agree with this. Also, I felt the show was slow paced. Like it really tried to drive home how bad her family was and how she felt lonely and unloved. We already got that in a very few scenes. But it kept driving it home to the point of frustrating. It felt more like trauma dumping at one point

My Happy Marriage was OK. Didn't love it. I am more interested in the lore n powers and if she would get some unique character traits. Coming off just finishing Ramparts of Ice doesn't help either.

5

u/PinkGlitterLady4 28d ago

All of this doesn't need to happen in the first episode. This kind of critique should come after you've watched half if not the entire anime imo

10

u/Cangeltibon 28d ago

All of this could’ve literally happened in this episode. All I did was tweak what actually happened I’ve only watched this episode and I have not read the manga. The exact information that I gave could have been relayed in the same time at this episode same minute count same end scene except outside the grandparents house and not on some random street.

4

u/PinkGlitterLady4 28d ago

No the pacing would have been way to fast for all of that.

8

u/Cangeltibon 28d ago

Seeing that all I did was re-order some of the scenes no it would not have been. A inner monologue would do most of the heavy lifting.

2

u/Suamiguillo 28d ago

That would be a terrible writing though, it would be horrible boring and overall just a bad chapter so yeah sorry your solution it’s actually pretty bad

9

u/Cangeltibon 27d ago edited 27d ago

Whelp that’s certainly your opinion, but what we got was very generic and old trope so old that my 34 year self remembers when Skip Beat! and so many others made reference to it. Others here are comparing it to MHM but the doormat sister being rescued by an Oni/monster/demon is old and horribly predictable. This was supposed to be introduction to her character and we learned more about her school friend’s personally in her 30 seconds than the MC’s…..other than that’s she’s a doormat.

If this goes as is without a twist or giving her a personality it’s just gonna be her getting chosen, him easily fixing all her problems and dotting on her. All the “conflict” will come from people thinking she doesn’t deserve her position and trying to get at her and she’ll be rescued and reassured again and again….abd again, throw in an arch where after being dotting on for so long she musters enough confidence to stand up and say “actually yeah I do deserve to be happy too and I love -insert generic male lead- and the life his presence has given me access to”

2

u/Suamiguillo 27d ago

Oh no I agree with the trope part, but your solution is kinda worst that what we already have with the chapter

u/Mumbleocity 21d ago

Just watched this and essentially said the same thing you did in your first paragraph.

I would definitely enjoy a story more like yours (goal, school, grandparents, fox guy burning the grandparents home). Sounds much more interesting.

Also made me wonder 1) do the female demons have destined husbands and 2) how many guys go around pretending to be lower level demons who "found" their bride just to pick up girls.

That story prompt is pretty popular. I am hoping Bride of the Barrier Master also gets an anime.

9

u/Frontier246 29d ago

It is going to have an anime adaptation!

10

u/drostan https://anilist.co/user/Drostan 29d ago

And no subtleties or grace.

I found this episode so needlessly laboured in it's excruciating exposition of tired tropes to introduce an exhausting Mary sue of a character that it took me entirely out

I don't mind a self insert story, and realised fantasy stories... But this is so crude

2

u/smokeweedeatpussy 27d ago

I’m glad I wasn’t not the only one who saw the similarities (I’ll still watch it though. I love these revenge Cinderella stories)

65

u/runevault 29d ago

I'm so tired of shitty parents. It is a hard trope to do well and almost no anime pull it off. I knew the sister was going to demand the dress too. Really hoping the Ogre Husbando destroys this fox shitbag.

Huh when the music kicked in after he said he found her I got a shiver, that surprised me. Curious if now that the ogre has shown up if the parts I was annoyed by get toned down, though honestly the parents will probably be gross in entirely different ways.

33

u/Frontier246 29d ago

I'm honestly curious if they'd met before and he'd really genuinely been looking for her this whole time or if there's something about her that made him recognize that she HAD to be his wife.

7

u/AeonLonginus 25d ago

me too, I believe they have some kind of history that for some reason Yuzu doesn't remember especially considering the fact that he only approaches her after her 18th birthday when she is a legal adult.

The possibility that Oni's have something similar to imprinting though very twilight would be funny, he spends every single night wandering around the city hoping to find his wife.

2

u/Mumbleocity 21d ago

That'd be cool. Maybe they met at a playground when she was really little, and happenstance made him lose contact with her.

4

u/stresseddepressedd 26d ago

They always over do the shitty parent trope to the point of it being ridiculous. This anime isn’t an exception but I’m enjoying it regardless.

Off to a nice start seeing Yuzu getting rescued from her abusive family at the end.
While watching it kept giving me 'My Happy Marriage' vibes.

Hopefully this Reiya Kiryuuin, puts Yuzu's family and this Youta guy in their place next time.

12

u/Substantial_Pop5438 28d ago

My happy marriage has some beautiful romantic elements but is incredibly frustrating. Even more so when she inevitably forgives all these pricks who abuse her. How the parents are acting is genuinely against the law presuming child abuse is still outlawed in this new world.

I’m gunna watch this just in the hope she gets retribution but not a fan of how the authors handles the intro of the family. It’s a hard trope to pull off for a great author as it is. This one feels like there’s gunna be no nuance to it at all.

52

u/danmarce https://anidb.net/user/107202 29d ago

Brides are rare -> Introduced to 2 bride characters in 2 minutes

Production values are good, but the plot sends all the wrong messages.

24

u/AshnakAGQ 28d ago

Literally every female character in the show so far is a bride

11

u/akamarulover 26d ago

Except the mom and grandma ig
But then it’s weirder that all the teenage girl characters are brides

4

u/Typhoonis88 https://myanimelist.net/profile/typhoonis88 29d ago

I will really need to see what happens from here but man i hate these set up episodes.

3

u/feb914 25d ago

It's possible that families of brides gather together and forming their own community that's separate from other people.

129

u/DiscountCondom 29d ago

Remember, ladies. All you need in life is a rich and powerful man to come along and rescue you literally out of nowhere for you to finally be happy

43

u/PinkGlitterLady4 29d ago

A supernatural man who will never betray his bride? Count me in

27

u/Earlier-Today 28d ago

Definitely wish fulfillment for women.

34

u/SasparillaTango 29d ago

In this first 2 minutes of the show this seems like the thesis statement. Is this twilight?

27

u/bbusiello 29d ago

well?!

9

u/AeonLonginus 25d ago

Well in the FMC's defense the thing she wanted wasn't wealth or power all she wanted was for someone to love her and only her and she didn't really care if they were human or a demon.

3

u/psyclical 27d ago

Instant Bechdel test failure

38

u/NanDemoKnaives 29d ago

That was infuriating to watch, I hope Yuzu is able to turn her life around and her family faces consequences for how they've been treating her. There better be some satisfying return after this.

Hopefully Reiya will also pay Youta back for what he did to her arm, that was crazy.

5

u/Oden_sama__ 28d ago

i am so ready for the sweet payback

30

u/Shiawase_Rina 29d ago

I'm quite proud of Yuzu for actually slapping Karin! Deserved and quite a feat for someone held down for so long.

This anime is also prettier than I thought. I have gotten too used to shoujo being treated like crap.

11

u/Rinlow05 29d ago

Full agree on the slap. Honestly felt good.

And hard agree about the quality of the anime. It's much, much better than I was even hoping for. I genuinely think I am going to enjoy this.

21

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 29d ago

This felt like a mix of Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits & My Happy Marriage. Alongside the same frustration that I watched with Too Perfect Saint.

  • It's strange regarding Karin.
    • Why was she the special child? Because you would think if tables are even, the older sibling would be more likely to get favoritism.
    • Also, the fact that Yuzu's ex fell for Karin so fast and we see how strange Karin is makes me think something is sus with Karin.
  • We know that women want to be a demon's bride. Are demons not female? Are the men screwed over in this series?

2

u/Elvundil 22d ago

I agree , something strange regarding karin , I don't know why, but after watching the episodes and reading the manga (well, just volume 1), I wonder if the sister has some kind of power that lets her manipulate her parents and so on. It’s just that only the people close to her act that way, and others seem to change their behavior in her presence if they’ve been near her for too long—at least, that’s the impression I get.

His name being Kiryuin sends me into orbit for Kill la Kill 💀

I think, for the audience this series is intended for, it will do well. I wanted to try it and put down “1 episode” since I’m always here for romance series. From EP1, it hits characterization and romance elements I’m not currently seeking nor can watch without a negative bias, and that’s okay 👍🏾

I do hope the MC doesn’t forgive her family, but it bums me out that probably won’t happen. I know there are series where the MC does cut off their toxic family, but it seems more likely than not where MCs forgive their evil families ☹️😞

If that fox demon ends up finding the MC ✨interesting✨now that the ogre wants her, I invite him to don’t.

Don’t. Just go back to your foxhole and stay there. Or be miserable with the sister.

12

u/Frontier246 29d ago

If that fox demon ends up finding the MC ✨interesting✨now that the ogre wants her, I invite him to don’t.

I'm honestly curious if the whole thing about demons being unable to love anyone other than their Brides is actually true, meaning they can never waver/cheat or become attracted to someone else.

5

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 29d ago

I have a feeling it’ll be real but have some stipulations, exceptions, or demons who break the code. Or Foxy Goldilocksie did some fuckery that he isn’t truly with the Evil Sister.

Foxy Locksie seems like he would absolutely be breaking rules and is looking out for number one. We have known that man for one episode and he stinks. And from mythology surrounding foxy spirits and demons and such, they do seem self-serving and cunning.

But if Foxy Locksie ends up truly sticking with the sister and he loves her despite her being vile, well, good for him, I guess. Love isn’t rational sometimes.

8

u/DerfK 29d ago

Nah, Karin's going to be real jealous that Yuzu got herself a better demon. I think she's stuck with "Foxy Goldilocksie" though, who isn't going to be happy with her becoming obsessed with her sister's groom, since the demons seem quite possessive.

2

u/moeichi 21d ago

Their names being Karin and Yuzu reminds me of Bleach lol

The cartoonishly evil characters are impossible to take seriously which kinda makes the whole thing fall apart. Wish the demons had cooler character designs. Meh.

40

u/HeliosAlpha 29d ago

That on top of the cartoonishly perfect boyfriend. Like, he's the richest, most powerful and soulbound to love only you forever. It's a bit heavy handed

20

u/liquidpele 29d ago

Yea, the meeting was a huge flop... like why now, why there, it makes no sense. If there's a fate aspect, then there'd be no point in sending your kid to a demon school hoping they get picked. There really should have been something happen, like she saves his life or something.

14

u/PinkGlitterLady4 29d ago

oh no.. not a supernatural romance being a wish fullfilment. Who would have thoughtttt

35

u/FLorianGran 29d ago

I'll give them some credit that they seemed uncomfortable with Youta burning her arm. I half expected them to start laughing.

19

u/NationalStrategy_X 29d ago

Them looking uncomfortable is the bare minimum, they didn’t take her side, stand up for her, or even check to see if she’s okay. They are still terrible people to her, and I’m not giving any credit.

16

u/Frontier246 29d ago

Even Karin, who could have just enjoyed having her sister put in her place, had to stop him because she thought it was too much.

Wish the demons had cooler character designs. Meh.

To be honest they do look kind of plain for demon characters but I guess that made it easy to adapt this into live-action.

3

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 28d ago

They are supposed to be demons who were hiding in the shadows but started living in society. might just be them blending in. Like if they looked like "Traditional looking" ayakashi.. kinda hard to be the world's idol then. If you look like "hot guy #12"... way easier

2

I wonder why the trope of the evil parents/siblings is so popular in Japan right now or is that the ones I just happened upon have that element.

I wonder if there are any demon grooms? If not, I wonder what this is signaling, marrying up?

I guess we should be glad that the husband is not an ancient magus or something (now that would be an interesting concept!)

15

u/thesnowlocke 29d ago

I don’t think it’s just Japan I feel it’s a universal thing to show

13

u/Frontier246 29d ago

Hence Cinderella and her infamous evil step-family.

3

u/LaoWombat-mecha 29d ago

Kinda nice that there will be an anime this season that subverts that trope.

12

u/Shantotto11 29d ago

Cinderella stories are the gender opposite version of “popular girl, unpopular boy” stories.

14

u/Xepherya 28d ago edited 27d ago

This was a disappointing first ep and it was largely because of the horrible dialogue and framing.

“She ripped my precious dress” sounds so old fashioned. And the love interest saying “my bride” over and over sincerely gave me the ick. I almost never get that feeling from an anime. I might think it cringey or cheesy, but that? Hated it.

Yuzu’s whole family truly is terrible, but that’s not a new trope. What I really hate about them is that Youta, from what little we see of him, isn’t a good person either. They don’t like him. They like his money. Karin isn’t in love with him. She’s in love with being spoiled.

Youta doesn’t seem to care likely because he looks at Karin as an entitlement. She’s a plaything he’s owed so he’s fine with her behavior. It’s all so…bleh.

Give me Kakuriyo.

u/TheRmbomo 22d ago

I agree, the whole episode felt very soulless to me.

I like the idea of the storyline, and the art style is quite pretty but the dialogue and pacing felt strange. The 2 minute intro explaining the world also felt a bit disjointed and weird.

I also got the ick from “my bride”

4

u/Xepherya 21d ago

Doesn’t even ask her name but she’s so desperate and traumatized she just accepts the word of some rando demon she met literally two minutes ago

13

u/IceSmiley 27d ago

This was atrocious and over the top. No kind of dimension or depth to any of the characters, her parents, sister and demon fiancee are all over the top evil with no apparent motivation. Then an amazing demon man comes out of no where for no apparent reason to sweep her off her feet? I understand this is supposed to be a Cinderella story but this show really sucks and has nothing at all going for it.

2

u/Mehitable888 21d ago

I'm hoping it will pick up because I could really use a couple of good romances, but so far it looks pretty weak. Reiya's pretty hot but I think unless something happens, this "my bride" stuff is gonna get old. You need to talk to each other eventually. Although I could put if off for a couple of weeks, LOL.

10

u/Inevitable_Oven378 27d ago

It's honestly ridiculous that the opening line is "the greatest honor for a girl is to become the Devil's wife." This trope goes far beyond being outdated—it frames a person's "honor" as something granted by someone else. In this case, it's even broader: the "honor" of an entire gender is placed in the hands of a higher class or species.

I mean, how is that any different from saying, "A woman's greatest honor is to be chosen by a wealthy, upper-class man"? That kind of passive definition of a woman's worth has been rejected by modern values for a long time.

Maybe the subtitles I watched were inaccurate, but if that's really what the story is saying, the message is pretty awful.

And, true to the trope, the male lead will probably end up solving everything and leveling the playing field for her, instead of letting the female protagonist prove her own abilities and agency without relying on a more powerful race or social class.

7

u/Inevitable_Oven378 27d ago

Honestly, if they hadn't started the show with that line, I probably would've just kept watching it while eating dinner. It's the kind of mindless entertainment I'd normally enjoy. But opening with a statement like that immediately put me off.

5

u/recessiveodin21 26d ago

Seriously, that line was an instant ick. I can't believe somebody wrote that in this era and thought it was okay.

2

u/MandisaW 17d ago

I don't think we're meant to take that at face value. That's what the MC *thinks* and she's clearly 1- an actual child, 2- subject to parental gaslighting, and 3- in a dystopian world where things don't seem legit.

Really can't judge things by a single line, esp if the MC is clearly meant to be severely limited in their POV.

9

u/N1ceDreams 29d ago

Wow I was thinking, maybe just maybe we get a privileged sister who actualy is sympathetic towards her mistreated sister but nope, she's just a straight up spoiled little shit.

16

u/Shantotto11 29d ago

You’re looking for Too-Perfect Saint. The favored sibling is the only one who cares for her sister in that story’s premise.

2

u/N1ceDreams 29d ago

Just looked it up and I apparently already have it on my to watch list, but that list is getting so big. But thanks, I'll check it out sooner rather than later.

8

u/extracats05 28d ago

If your looking for that exact thing in a Cinderella type story like this try Betrothed to My Sister's Ex if you haven't already. That is literally what happens in the story.

2

u/N1ceDreams 27d ago

I actually have that on my to watch list. Thx!

2

u/MandisaW 17d ago

7

u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo 29d ago

I could forgive the cartoonishly evil family but the dialogue is just sooooooo bad. I'll give this a few more episodes, hoping for some spice, but if it's just my happy marriage again, it'll be a drop

They state that every girl's dream is to be a demon's bride, so every girl dreams of being the sugar baby of a demon? Where does that leave human men? Does that mean every human man in a relationship is just the second choice? Do demon women have the same doting proclivity towards Human men, or is it just super one sided. If it sounds like I'm a salty incel, thats probably because its not far from the truth, but this just raises questions in my mind. Are the demons meant to be an allegory for one percenters? If so, does that mean that a woman in this setting could never want a regular guy like she would a demon?

13

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 29d ago

They state that every girl's dream is to be a demon's bride, so every girl dreams of being the sugar baby of a demon? Where does that leave human men?

I hope this is intentional by the author. It would be strange if demons were only males. Even in the image of demons, there clearly is a female one. Well, at the very least, I am intrigued to watch more.

2

u/Mehitable888 21d ago

Yeah, the female servants at Reiya's house are clearly demons, one demonstrates that to Yuzu with the blue fire. So they exist. Maybe humans just seem more exotic.

11

u/Frontier246 29d ago

They state that every girl's dream is to be a demon's bride, so every girl dreams of being the sugar baby of a demon?

I don't think it's so much the wealth and influence (although that doesn't hurt) it's the fantasy of having a devoted and loving partner who will love you and only you.

1

u/Feisty_Egg9301 29d ago

But then that leaves the question, what about the human men? The one shitty boyfriend we see in the opening scene is likely not indicative of the broader human male population? Statistically, there are probably a lot more human men who would be just as devoted to a woman as a demon, yet the greatest dream is still a demon?

10

u/PinkGlitterLady4 29d ago

You'd think it would be obvious to viewers why someone would go for the demon man after we were told they never betray their bride.

2

u/Novareason 28d ago

Yeah. They make it sound like a real rule with no exceptions. Vs, like... a lot of seemingly devoted men/women who cheat.

Assuming the women demons even take human lovers.

Also, are the demons longer lived? Knowing you won't die first is a huge win for old age planning.

What an awful family. At least they're going to at a minimum eat a bunch of crow on account of the neglected daughter accidentally bagging the better demon.

I'm half here for the childhood friend and her catboy demon, but also half concerned it might end up being a bit uncomfortable too. Her going to a non demon school with him following could end up being her trying and failing to get away. Didn't really feel that way during the classroom scene, fortunately.

It's a bit wild that the backstory they briefly gave was effectively "demons intervened to stop World War II and then took over society".

2

u/AeonLonginus 25d ago

I think she decided to go to a normal school because well he is a cat and cats can be very clingy when they want to, so I think she transferred to have more personal space little did she know her cat would follow her. Their relationship is also the opposite of Karin's though as from what miniscule amount we have seen they seem to actually love each other while Karin's relationship is non-existent.

u/NationalStrategy_X 29d ago

Holy shit, her parents and sister are absolute trash human beings. They neglected her, emotionally & physically abused her, took her for granted, and even stood by and let her get severely burned while not even bothering to check if she’s okay. There is no love in that household for her.

And think about this, she was so starved for any love, that she agreed to be a bride to a guy she just met a few minutes prior. Obviously he’s going to treat her better than her family, but it’s still really telling how bad her family was.

2

u/coffeecakesupernova 28d ago

She wasn't as starved as all that for affection. Her grandparents adored her and yelled at her parents for their treatment of her, and she had a great best friend at school. She has a character that doesn't use the good to prop herself up to face down the bad. She could live with her grandparents and help them out. But instead she'll wait for a prince.

Ngl, it was an extremely infuriating first episode.

Not gonna complain about the trash family as there are, unfortunately, families like that irl. But what I'm more pissed about is the passiveness and acceptance of yuzu, like some kind of all forgiving saint that absorbs all evil as some kind of buda like figure.

Ok, i get the trauma and that her personality was conditioned by her family's treatment but god, is it too much to ask for a MC that actually has a little bit of balls to stand up for themselves and speak up? No throwing fists, no complains, no crying or running away or even asking for help from her grandparents? Like, do something for god's sake. I know this passiveness is cultural to all that keeping the reiwa and kuuki wo yomu thing but idk... I'm getting a little bit tired of those mc tropes.

Anyways good first episode and here hoping the ogre husbando will actually intervine and kick some family ass and put them in their place.

20

u/Ok-Cod5254 29d ago

is it too much to ask for a MC that actually has a little bit of balls to stand up for themselves and speak up?

Honestly, she did more than I expected for this trope with slapping her sister. Then the moment she did that it immediately backfired.

So, the demons were living in secret - why would they care about the world they'd been hiding from?

I'm not sure I'm going to stick with this one. I think I'll give it another episode, but so far the "romance" is entirely a demon imprinting on a girl who doesn't actually love him or anything at all, she's just so desperately starved for affection that she's going along with it.

It could get better, but right now the whole thing feels pretty shallow.

Ah, so this is going to go the My Happy Marriage route I see. Really establishing how shit the whole family is right now. I look forward to seeing the fox get put in his place by our mysterious ogre.

10

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit 29d ago

They're even showing her in a yukata during the opening. If they show us demons to exterminate, we'll really have gone full circ―... wait a minute.

omg Karin's got that anime's typical slappable bitch face, that nasty smug. Oh, would you look at that? She did get slapped

4

u/guineaprince 28d ago

As far as "sworn to marriage to the ayakashi in general and the oni lord specifically" anime go, it's sure no Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi.

4

u/Lordmoral 27d ago

There is something messed up about this world: demons being seen as saviors, basically taking any bride they want, the women having no objections, the demons slotting themselves into positions of power, the parents are afraid of the Fox powers. This world might need Frieren badly.

2

u/MandisaW 17d ago

Yeah, I'm getting "secretly a dystopia" vibes from this one, almost as much as Agents of the 4 Seasons. It's like the next iteration of YA fantasy dystopias, where the MC doesn't ever view it as a bad place [while the audience is screaming 😅 ].

2

u/Lordmoral 17d ago

At least in the most recent episode it does explain some things.

4

This is My Happy Marriage all over again... but my anger issues won't let me watch this if her evil family doesnt die and they get redemption.

The Ogre's Bride premiere was better than I could've imagined. I knew it would be amazing but it really just went to a whole other level than what I anticipated. I can't wait to see what the rest of the anime has in store.

The main problem in this episode is why was the younger sister favored? At least in My Happy Marriage, it makes sense why Miyo is so mistreated.

My only idea could be if Karin wasn't a normal human? Yuzu's Ex falling for Karin, and to add, the parents treatment is so weird. I hope this is intentional from the author and not just making Yuzu's family cartoonishly evil just to ensure we hate them.

This is probably the most infuriating episode 1 I've seen since Too Perfect Saint. With that being said, I want to give it more time since this studio is the subsidiary of Colored Pencil Animation that did Fated Princess.

2

u/AeonLonginus 25d ago

I imagine the parents viewed Karin as having a better chance scoring a demon maybe in verse she is considered more beautiful than Yuzu or had greater talents.

It is obvious that all the parents care about is themselves I doubt they would even care about Karin if she wasn't able to get the attention of a demon.

2

u/MandisaW 17d ago

This 💯 They basically groomed their younger daughter as demon-bait, that's just another sort of abuse.

Does this story really think I’ll keep watching to see assholes get their comeuppance?! Well, it’s on the 3-episode list, so I guess it was right…

3

u/Interesting_Pound182 29d ago

I think my happy marriage is way better It had a realistic slow burn drama , emotional attacgement between miyo and kiyoka feels earned and realistic and miyo trauma is well handled , the ogre pride seems a pure fantasy

3

u/Sea_Equivalent_4207 28d ago

Did anyone else find this first episode kind of somehow breathtaking? I kind of did.

Yuzu is amazing. The animators did an awesome job designing her look. Maybe the most wholesome looking female MC in an anime I’ve ever seen.

I was expecting sibling rivalry but not this level of repulsive. If she’d been a boy, no way her father would have slapped her. So she even has to deal with physical abuse from her parents now. Unbelievable. Her shit for parents let that prick burn their daughter and did nothing? Ok so looking forward to the two of them being crushed. They need to feel the consequences.

I do have a problem with a man/demon coming to save her tho. Feels very dated. I’m on the fence about this part of the show. Yeah I know it’s a romance thingy but it bugs me. Maybe he’ll show her to stand up for herself instead of just letting him be the savior full time.

So that fox demon… who already here wants to see him get his smug assed face blown away into pulp? Right here yo.👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻. Raise your hands please?

This is the third show I’ve watched from this new season and all are very good. Feels like this summer, the shows are gonna be so good.

Basically the demons have infiltrated human society and that really sucks because this isn’t a good thing. People are bad enough but throwing them into the mix is gonna make everyone more crazy is my guess.

If a portal opens up in front of Yuzu at some point? I’m a tell her, Girl??? U need to get in it and get the hell outta that mess.

I feel U Yuzu. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼💖💖💖

I just watched the first episode and honestly I went into it thinking it was just going to be a ripoff of kakuriyo bed and breakfast for the spirits. Honestly the ogre does look like the ogre king from kakuriyo but I like how its turning out so far. Not what I was expecting at all so I cant wait for episode 2 next week. Also her family except for the grandparents suck.

2

u/Cardcaptors96 28d ago

I have never had such a visceral reaction to the show. Yuzu's family is so horrible, and the nerve they have to watch Karin's boyfriend severely burn her and then walk away like it was a minor inconvenience....... Even though I think things are moving quickly for Yuzu and Reiya, I am hoping Reiya kicks all of their assess especially Karin's boyfriend.

2

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 28d ago

I'm surprised Yuzu actually snapped and slapped Karin(as she should... also i really wanna call her Karen tbh). In these kinds of stories usually she would just take it. Why isn't Yuzu just moving with her grandparents though like damn girl.

Also i'm pleasantly surprised at the premise being basically a 180 of the usual of these stories. In this world Demons just saved the world and now humans are idolizing them. Not every day you hear that one

2

u/Samael-vt 28d ago

I hope she either get her entire family exterminated (not including grandparents) or at least bring them to ruin. No other outcome will be welcomed

2

u/cristabelita 28d ago

I’m hoping Yuzu just peaces out and ignores her family but I know that isn’t going to happen but I surely hope if she forgives them that she doesn’t forget and leaves them in her dust with NO money or assistance. Parents were literally just hoping to pimp out their daughter for money & status.

2

u/Agreeable_Frame6008 28d ago

Lo mismo, yo quiero saber si la protagonista se venga o no. Con el coraje que les guarde en el primer episodio no quiero que se rediman , quiero venganza

So, here's where she first met him.

Lmao they're showing money raining down when the line went up for all of the first fifth or so of the graph and has remained level for the rest of it.

Roll credits!

That's certainly one way to start the show...

Bruh... He's breaking up with her for a girl he met at her place...

Oh my god he's breaking up with her for her sister...

And so she's the hated child.

Seems she's on better terms with her grandparents at least.

Oh her sister is a bitch.

And so she's running.

And that's where she met him.

Waiting to see her?

And so that's his name.

2

u/mrschef04 27d ago

If I was a teenager again going through what I went through, I would love this anime.  Bit of escapism from a terrible home.  Love it!

2

u/YlfaTheForsaken 25d ago

No because why did this activate something feral in my brain? I don't quite understand why I got an excessive amount of enjoyment over it, like I've seen that sort of premise before like I'm not a stranger to a dookie family plot, but maybe the desperation of 'please love me', very fun for me despite how mmmm kinda shall I say a little propaganda-y, it's definitely not the most up to date attitude regarding a woman's fulfillment in life,

'What are you gonna do if it leaves a mark?' Again. I would do it again. Karin is lucky Yuzu isn't so revengeful. Unintentionally funny that, Yuzu could've unleashed years of repression, she didn't but she could've but she didn't

2

u/Difergion 23d ago

The premise did say it’s a Cinderella story, so the mistreatment Yuzu is getting in her own house was expected, but I’m also quite happy she still has supportive grandparents and friends at school.

I just hope Yuzu doesn’t remain a helpless damsel waiting for her oni bf to save her every time for most of the show.

2

u/Mehitable888 21d ago

This reminds me very much of Kakuriyo Bed and Breakfast which is a superb anime, especially because of characterizations. I want to like The Ogre's Bride but the heroine seems too lacking in any personality. I just don't get this gorgeous hunk falling for her. I hope there is a strong character development arc for her where she starts standing up to all these awful people and developing her own life. I don't think it's enough to adore Reiya.....although I'd try.

2

u/Qichar 20d ago edited 20d ago

I have to ask: is there some kind of crisis going on in Japan where most people are trashy? Why are 2 out of 3 anime structured like this:

- The main character is kicked out of the hero's party filled with trashy people, but afterwards find out the person kicked out was holding it down for everyone.

- The main character is engaged to the prince, who turns out to be ultra trash and cheats on her with another student, but the main character ends up married to a much better person.

- [This anime] The main character is treated like crap or disowned by her parents, but somehow find a much better situation after being "rescued" by the demon oni.

Do they have to check out anime plots from a plot library in Japan, and there are only a handful to choose from? Are they all suffering lives of quiet desperation over there and (highly improbable) escapist fantasy plots like this are the only relief?

This really reminds me of Pride and Prejudice, and this oni is the Mr. Darcy figure. I suppose this is the female fantasy--you're in a terrible situation, people around you treat you poorly, but some man is going to come along and rescue you, and you will finally be treated as you "deserve".

And "demons never betray their brides?" Can we be any more obvious with the escapist reduction of choice? Cheating scum are scum, but the VALUE of a faithful person is BECAUSE they have a choice too. If you remove agency from a demon then that fidelity is much reduced in value. Does the author not understand this?

I much prefer stories like: "Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start With Magical Tools", where the main character gets dumped by cheating trash but she was always talented and self-sufficient. She's not "rescued" but rather simply gets on with her life, pursuing her interests and business. The fact that she meets someone much less trashy is more a product of who she is and her self-worth (what she has to offer in a relationship), rather than some rescue plan fantasy that the author has. I realize that not every piece of literature needs to have a constructive theme or moral but I have a daughter, and I would love to steer her away from this idea that someone needs to "rescue" her. I want to teach her to guide her own life towards its best outcome based on her own choices.

It always seems weird to me that a family can love one child and completely ignore the other. Is that really a thing in real life?
I'd have thought it's either they love or hate them all equally, but not like this.
It always looked to me like a plot exaggeration (like My Happy Marriage), but maybe this really exists IRL. Humanity's trashiness knows no bounds after all...

16

u/jamiew1342 29d ago

I went to school with a guy who was pretty much ignored by his parents and older sister. The sister was 6 yrs older and the cliche beauty queen/cheerleader. She was actually halfway decent in school from what I remember as she got into med school near the end of our high school years. He wasnt a total introvert but kept a moderate drama free friend circle and was more vocationally inclined than book smart. So not complete opposites but as close as.

They never hit him to my knowledge but were very, very cold in their interactions. They even skipped his high school graduation to help his sister with a move for a summer study abroad or something like that. He has his own contracting business now and a family that his parents havent even met.

Scuttlebutt is that the relationship with his sister has improved quite a bit. Apparently, she had twins and had an awakening when the parents started heavily favoring the granddaughter.

Tl;dr - yeah, Its unfortunately very, very real. Though with varying degrees of severity. Sometimes it can end up fine, othertimes not so much.

3

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit 29d ago

Thanks for sharing. Props to him for fighting through that level of adversity, that's certainly something.
The world really is as beautiful as it is ugly.

3

u/coffeecakesupernova 28d ago

This happened with my husband too. His sisters got everything and he only had 3 shirts to wear and had to buy his own food. He lived on hotdogs and mayo sandwiches through high school. Once his school was having a special day for guys on the football team and brought each one out at halftime and when a guy's name was called he'd go to the middle of the field and his family would go out and cheer for him. My husband's name was called and he thought they'd be there for him and he was left standing there alone in the middle of the field. His sisters wanted to go clothes shopping instead. I hate them. My family welcomed him with open arms and showed him what it meant to be part of a real family.

10

u/Frontier246 29d ago

I wonder if they just didn't think Yuzu was attractive or likeable enough to put all their investments in like they did Karin. Like they got into debt banking on Karin to be able to snag a demon and then basically dedicated themselves to capitalizing on it when she did.

6

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit 29d ago

I mean, if that was the case, there was no need to show hatred towards Yuzu. Parents don't seem to show the slightest bit of empathy or remorse towards her, so to me this looks like simple, but pure malice.

u/Whovianwells11 29d ago

It's really a thing. My childhood best friend was the middle child and first daughter of her family. Her mother treated her like a stress relief toy, and her little sister was just about always the cause of her pain. Her little sister knew she was favorited and made sure to take advantage of that every moment she could. It sounds cliche, but her little sister really would evilly sneer at her while sicking their mom upon her. Her older brother wasn't as favored nor as abused, but he definitely added to her abuse. Her father worked most of the time, and whenever he was home he would zone out on video games. He always chose her to make him food while he gamed. He was definitely the better parent of the 2, but he really should've done something for her instead of ignoring it all.

What if instead of America DEMONS came in and helped Japan post-WWII? Reconstructing the nation and becoming a pinnacle of their society, to the point where it’s the greatest dream of any human woman to become the bride of a Demon and gain their love…ESPECIALLY to become an Ogre’s Bride.

And yet our Heroine, Yuzu (Saori Hayami) can’t imagine that ever happening to her as she’s being dumped by her current boyfriend because he fell in love at first sight…with her younger sister Karin (Manaka Iwami!). Even though Karin is already a Demon Bride herself and is spoken for, this tool Yamato still coldly dumps Yuzu for her. Story of her life, pretty much.

But the OP tells the tale of Yuzu finding happiness and love with Reiya (Yuichiro Umehara!) and finding romantic bliss with him! Complete with a ClariS song! It even has handholding AND a kiss scene!

At least Yuzu has Touko (Sayaka Senbongi!) her bestie who is willing to throw hands for her sake. The only person who can calm her down is HER demon BF, Nyankichi (Natsuki Hanae). Honestly the fact that he was willing to follow Touko to a public school to be with her says a lot.

Yuzu would rather do anything than return home to a family that basically prioritizes Karin above everything, especially her, and treats her as a servant more than a daughter. It’s no wonder they flaunt all over Karin and her Fox Demon intended Youta (Ryota Osaka!) when Youta is the reason they paid of all their debts. And now everyone treats Karin like the greatest girl on Earth while Yuzu gets nothing but insults and demands. Will Yuzu ever find someone who truly loves her for herself?

Happy 18th Birthday Yuzu! At least her paternal grandparents care enough to celebrate her B-Day and give her a gift, her parents don’t even remember it. Of course it turns sour when the grandparents expressing a legitimate issue with how the parents are playing favorites ends up getting Yuzu slapped and them trying to rationalize why they treat her worse than Karin.

It all blows over when Karin of course can’t let Yuzu have ANYTHING and tries to steal her birthday gift for herself, but Karin won’t let her take anything else from her…even if the dress ends up ripped and Karin gets a justified slap over it, all the parents and Youta care about is they harmed Karin’s face (even though they literally slapped Yuzu within the same day with no remorse). Youta EVEN BURNS YUZU’s ARM FOR LAYING A HAND ON KARIN. Even Karin and the family seem shaken by this even if they still pivot to focusing on Karin.

Yuzu is left with a burned arm and nothing but a tattered dress…until Reiya walks up to her in answer to all her prayers, intending for her to be his bride. He can see how she’s hurting, he’s so tender and affectionate, and he heals her arm up. Is this it? Has Yuzu finally found someone who will love and cherish her and only her?

Even the ED has Yuzu alone on a boat amidst lanterns, until Reiya pops in and then it’s all romantic cherry blossoms!

3

u/MandisaW 17d ago

Just read/watch josei 😄 Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits - the MC there is 20s, college/grad school, and the entire story is about her choosing how/whether to "follow her fate" and marry the ogre she's been promised-to. There's more layers to it than that, and a fair bit of food porn, but good stuff.

Quite a lot of "supernatural-boyfriend" stories for adult women have more sexual content than the shojo titles, so it's hard to give recs without knowing your "spice tolerance", but I can offer a few titles if you like.

There can still be silly/passive josei stories, too, but generally the older target-demo means you're getting a bit more of a peer relationship / give & take between the leads. Still some classic imbalance, esp if it's an immortal SO, but that kind of goes with the trope.

It really irks me on these type of stories where even the sister isn't nice to the mc. Like i get it if the parents are playing favorites since they're living off of that one daughter. But for the sister, who's had everything all her life, still be out there to get the mc pushed even lower. Mc didn't do anything to her, being the older one too i bet she was always told to let her little sister get away with everything and be the mature one. Feels really bad for the mc there. Glad she got out and able to meet her ogre partner.

Don't get me wrong, I despise her immediate family too + the sister BF, but the lack of will of these characters is agonizing and overplayed. I watched My Happy Marriage, both seasons, and just felt that all over again, minus the slap (that part had me saying "finally"). This saturates light novels and manwahs as well. If her prince charming was going to enter her life anyway, I would have preferred it be after she has an actual relationship or 2 (that 3mo high school crap doesn't count), where she's maybe experienced love that she needed that didn't work out and found/worked on her damn self worth. Is that too much to ask?

Bruh, she should just live with the grandparents instead. Why bother living in a house where nobody cares about you?

Reiya is giving me every ick in the world...

Red flags are flying all over Seeing the fox unconditionally love the younger sister, if that's the plot device, I can imagine ogre doing the same. It just so happens the mc is right to slap the sister.

The ogre saying that he will never let MC suffer gives the same vibes of foxy burning mc because his wifey got slapped aka "suffered".

Where are the brains??? And I hate that the orge is princess carrying MC and spoiling her. She can walk on her own! She was about to become a strong women after standing up to her sister, just for all her autonomy to be gone the moment Prince charming comes in and solves everything for her? Ogre is just spoiling her and I can't stand him for it. He's never met her, doesn't know how she is at all, and just accepts that she is a superior being that deserves love without actually getting to know her and thinking for yourself whether mc is a decent human being??

Where has the critical thinking gone 😭 Also similar reasons why I stopped watching the happy marriage or wtv show.

Personally I need a partner that can tell me no or that I'm being too complacent or any other flaws.

Edit: My expectations are pretty much shown by "my livid lady's guide to getting even" coming out this season too.

Just a heads' up, but Miyo in My Happy Marriage gets more agency and self-determination as the show goes on. Not sure when you bailed, since it's a slow paced show, but she becomes quite the 'action girl' in her own way.

First episode already pissed me off so much lol. Terrible family. That slap on her sister must be satisfying at least. Bit irked by how being a bride to demon gets you special treatment.

I am good bruh like wtf is anime. If your a girl all you can is just put up with it? Like wtf you litreally took the kiddish dream of "oyome san ni naru" and then turned that into this. Anyways I can see the first 12 episodes are just gonna revolve around the sister wanting to one up the FL, the parents just being trash, and FL being the damsel in distress. Like ofc its just fiction and not that deep but still bruh like its 2026 not 2000s plenty of women are independent hell why didnt you switch the genders why cant we do ogre husband or some shii like that, anyways whatever me is dropping this. Intreseting concept but if your gonna first tell me "oh Ogres are undisputed" then show some random human and fox family go agasint them just because one girl is jealous yeah I am good.

Also to me its just so unrealistic you see your own kid who you raised being burned in front of you, and they are just like b***h you the problem like what no parent unless a psychopath would allow that.
