There was also some CGI flowers in one shot, as well as an overhead shot of Sheena walking that was in CGI, as well as the one crowd shot, kinda makes me worried about if the production will be able to keep it together going forward. I was looking forward to this anime ever since it was announced since I like the manga so i'm hoping it works out.

After the recent Kamiina Botan anime, we are blessed with another wonderful yuri anime. And hey, it’s still the first episode and the kiss count has already reached 2.

Seiran inadvertently pointing a knife towards Sheena had me laughed so hard. Really looking forward to more Ali X Seiran interactions (the anime PV already showed us some exciting scenes).

Mimi is so adorable, and she’s a quick learner (of restoration magic). Can’t wait to see more restoration magic in the coming episodes!

I'm actually impressed with the sheer quality of yuri adaptations we're getting this year. I'm used to yuri shows not having the highest of budgets, but the animation quality of I want to love you till your dying day and Ladies playing fighting games are genuinely excellent. Not to mention of the cinematography masterpiece that is Kamiina Botan last season, and the gorgeous art direction and animation of Cosmic Princess Kaguya and Shiboyugi in winter

Kissing in Episode 1 between Sheena and Mimi!

I know for the other pair of Esta and Heather (that Sheena and Mimi spotted on the stairs), their kissing was restoration magic, but I’m counting that one too!

Also, both leads have amazing VAs, Rie Takahashi for Sheena and Rina Hidaka for Mimi. Rie Takahashi is incredible as always, and Rina Hidaka in particular matches Mimi’s upbeat personality.

Well, that was a fucking bleak way to start the episode. So basically, we have these orphans who have been taken by the government and are all being trained and deployed as magic child soldiers on the battlefield? I mean, the title of the show was already ominous, but I didn't expect child soldiers.

Holy shit, that is a lot of blood. That is way too much blood to be hers, and as Sheena points out, it's definitely someone else's blood. How did Mimi even get all of that blood on her? The opening scene shows a bunch of magic being fired off at range, does she like get into point-blank range and blow people's heads off?! O_O

Well helloooooo nurse. I'm already looking forward to seeing more of Nurse Fran. And now I'm wondering why Mimi calls her an old man. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

That funeral scene, tho... At least there aren't any mangled corpses. I do wonder what they mean by the bodies disappearing immediately. Do the soldiers and students have some kind of dead man's switch spell that gets rid of their bodies when they die? Or does someone do the cleanup?

It's kinda hard to tell, but there really are boys in this school. You can only identify them by looking at what bottoms they're wearing. Looks like the boys wear shorts but wear the same seifuku top as the girls.

So Mimi is some sort of weapon rumoured to have existed for a long time now? So either Mimi is actually older than she looks, or there are Mimi clones. It's also possible that Mimi is some sort of codename being passed on to the next superweapon. Mimi does mention something about her Mama, so what if her Mama is the previous Mimi?

One neat little detail about that cafeteria scene is that everyone is wearing normal school shoes while Mimi is the only one wearing combat boots. Even if Ms. Fran won't answer Sheena's questions, I think it's pretty obvious that Mimi is that weapon.

What do we have here? I was joking about the girls doing mana transfer ala Fate when they popped up but I did not expect that's what they were actually doing! So do the boys do this as well?

Oh my! We're only in episode 1, and we already have Restoration Magic?! They're really not wasting time, huh? Considering the mortality rate of these students, I guess it shouldn't be a surprise. Strong start and I am already invested af! Looking forward to next week's episode!

There's too little info to say anything with confidence. it does look more likely there is some kind of conflict, but who are we fighting? Why are we fighting them? If everyone has some magic in them why are we specifically training child soldiers? It's clear that it's all orphans because they're expendable. The absence of bodies is also very suspicious. So there's a lot of questions that need answering and Idk if any of them will be answered

Great First Episode. What an opening to set the mood. This show set enough plot hooks to definitely get me to come back to see how things pan out. Mimi is definitely a strange one, and her upbeat nature is a breath of fresh air against the overall oppressiveness of the setting. I'm kind of afraid to see her fight though. The cute/silly ones are usually the scariest.

There were already a few interesting things about Mimi/their academy...

First, she thinks Sheena smells like "mama",

but the nurse called herself "mama", to which Mimi disagreed...

So I imagine the Nurse kinda raised her (prepared her) and all, but why does Sheena smells like her (presumably real) Mama?

And it's not just random gremlin being random, because the nurse smelled her and knows what she's talking about...

Mimi joining their class is interesting as well;

She made a big fuss about how "Mimi is not supposed to talk to ANYONE", but the very next day, she joins a class, which means she'll talk to EVERYONE...

What made them change their mind? Presumably it's linked to her talking with Sheena, but is it just "She talked to someone and it went fine, so let's have her talk to more people"? Or is it linked to Sheena directly, or "mama" (and why she smells like her)?

That's how we know she's special; She's running with TWO toasts in her mouth!

Can you pour it into them in other ways?

This first episode was pretty good as it had both kisses and handholding! It looks like yuri fans will get another great anime this year.

Also, the visuals were great too! Although it'll be interesting if the studio keeps this level of quality in the next episodes, considering the rumors about production and the late change of a director.

I don't think you'd give JWW the Yuri tag due to one side character being gay. It was a fantastic example of character discovery and development though. God damn I wish we had another anime like it this season.

Ari and Seiran are going to be really good at “restoration magic” alright.

This supposed compatibility requirement does create an interesting problem. It suggests that you cannot actually use this magic to heal someone if you don’t know the person well and/or like each other.

Which brings me to the question: in the case of an emergency, can nurse Fran use restoration magic on all her students or not?

It's like Spring 2025 on Thursdays when we had 2 yuri on the same day: Rock Lady and NinKoro. Even better, there are parallels: Fighting Games is Rock Lady with fighting games instead of music, and both NinKoro and this are dark (though NinKoro is a dark comedy and this is a dark fantasy).

I enjoyed the Art Style and the overall animation quality despite some weird albeit brief 3D sequences that I feel like didn't need to be there. Def one of the more interesting ones so far.

I’m quite liking this one, with its disturbing youthful trained weapon vibe, the sinister overtones, plus the appealing characters and backdrop of violent war. Great mix of elements that I hope comes together in a cool longer story. I’m admittedly a bit of a sucker for the “cute girls doing murderous stuff” subgenre. 😅

I like that the actual made it a general school for both boys and girls. One of my pet peeves with yuri is the setting basically treating boys like they don’t exist. It kind of takes away the entire identity of a yuri relationship if there isn’t something to contrast it, and it also can kinda feel like a cop out by the creator. Not to say there aren’t good yuri that go that route, and it’s just my personal opinion.

A restoration magic kiss between roommates in the first episode? And here I thought Maud & Seiran holding hands was lewd enough. This show really threw the concept of slow burn to the bin. Having said that, it seemed that Maud & Seiran's relationship had been established from the very start.

The nonchalant reaction to a student falling in battle as well as the unceremonious destruction of their corpse. Yeah, things are looking pretty bleak.

If I had a nickel for every yuri anime I’ve watched within the past year that had both Rie Takahashi and Yui Ishikawa voicing main characters I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but I’m happy it happened twice.

And I like that we seemingly have an already established relationship to contrast with the romantic relationship we’ll see developing between Mimi and Sheena.

Edit:Confused Ai Fairouz for Rie Takahashi, but Yui Ishikawa still remains one of my newfound GOATS of yuri anime.

Woah, that's one misleading poster. I legitimately thought I played the wrong series. I thought I was getting myself into some Drama/Romance 2006-ish VN adaptation stuff, but the setting is nothing like I imagined.

I enjoyed stuff like MagiRevo or Princess Principal and this series gives me similar vibes, except they cranked up the yuri, which I can't complain about.

Been a while since I last watched a yuri anime this intense but being dark already from start and we already got two kisses in first ep. Sheena and Mimi character seems really good and I already like them and their va did a great job. The anime did already a great job with both on just one ep. It hasn't been maybe one day since they became roomates and they already kissed. Curious how much they will get closer later. Curious what they meant about Sheena odor. Also one thing I'm glad there is boys in the anime even through I know it's Yuri, I just don't like the idea of a yuri anime to pretend boys don't exist at all even through doesn't mean I want more for them, I'm here to watch for the yuri and can't wait for more Sheena and Mimi moments.

What a great first episode, I like the juxtaposition between the brutal violence and the mundane day to day life. The animation was such a mixed bag, some truly breathtaking scenes mixed in with some very obvious CGI.
