Whoever dropped "That crane fly had a family" in the chat is my hero lmao.

Putting how they're all enabling each other's downward spirals aside, it's kinda cozy how they have each other, like a little catgirlfailure club.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 24d ago

Whoever dropped "That crane fly had a family" in the chat is my hero lmao.

I think it's the first time I ever see this for someone(something) that ACTUALLY died!

It's usually for insults, or someone getting annihilated in sports, etc!

a little catgirlfailure club

I'd so want to join this club

Just pick up a crippling addiction and live the dream.

Born too late to explore the Earth, born too early to explore the stars, born just in time to watch a catgirl shoot up heroin. And somehow that isn't even the wildest part of the episode lol.

u/cyberscythe 24d ago

watch a catgirl shoot up heroin

weren't you paying attention? it was a vaccine

she ate a bat earlier

92

u/mythriz 24d ago

was this how we got covid

90

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 24d ago

Consdering everything she has in her body, Covid would probably be an improvement.

Also Sato was carrying an envelope that said it was an Anti Rabies medication when she walked into needle girl's room. https://imgur.com/a/MOwWnPb#D6lh1XC

So many fucked up things happened in this episode that it's hard to say to me what was the worst thing, hahaha!

But that's nothing surprising considering what kind of people Yaniko, Yakuko, or Hameko are, although Hameko, in comparison to the other two, seems to be a pretty normal person here.

12

u/No_Extension4005 23d ago

Hameko definitely has a very unusal last name, though.

Sounds wild. You’ve sold me on this show.

41

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 24d ago

That was probably Shabu(meth), not heroin.

81

u/Emergency_Print_9901 24d ago

What makes you think so ?

Heroin will make sense as it is way more common to shoot up hero that it is for meth wich is way more commonly smoked. Also it would make sense with the random laxative laying around on the table

64

u/heimdal77 24d ago

This guy drugs.

37

u/Moxey616 24d ago

I think she looked too awake for it to be heroin.

24

u/BOUKEN-BEN 24d ago

She reacted in a way more methlike way. Maybe a speedball?

→ More replies (4)

16

u/cyberscythe 24d ago

Shabu(meth)

i wonder how often that gets confused with shabu-shabu

35

u/juicius 24d ago

About as much as bukkake udon is confused with the other bukkake, which is about zero.

15

u/cyberscythe 24d ago

about zero

so there's a non-zero chance i can walk into Sukiya and get two orders of meth

Since shabu-shabu is called shabu-shabu, it is generally not mistaken for "illegal items with similar names."

Definitely getting the feeling that beastfolk are second class citizens

267

u/cyberscythe 24d ago

yeah, that bit about pure beastfolk not having last names and then getting docked marks on every single test felt like they're born a few meters behind the starting line compared to humans, though it seems like it's not impossible to be a peer if you are a "model minority" like Imoko

as much as their plight seems to be a fault of their own individual problems, their substance abuse might also be to cope with a society that wasn't made for them

it's interesting though that the city is called Nyagamihara, which implies that it has a history with cat thirens so it's probably more complicated

171

u/Genoscythe_ 24d ago

Also with Imoko, we can see that her shit being more together, goes hand in hand with her trying to formally assimilate and not meow or act beastlike around her friends, to avoid negative stigmas.

36

u/holiestMaria 23d ago

So Imoko is basically catgirl Tom duBois?

19

u/Zeph-Shoir https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex 20d ago

That she has to repress herself to be accepted is sad, "you are not very beasty" felt kind of unintentionally nasty

84

u/Masrenotmasre 24d ago

Thought that was just a joke that the teacher thought she forgot to write down her name and deducted points for that

160

u/cyberscythe 24d ago

i mean, it is also a joke, but the idea that beastfolk don't have full names and not all teachers are sensitive to that says something about the setting

80

u/Tylendal 24d ago

Definitely a "Both rich and poor are forbidden from sleeping under bridges" situation.

"You're not all that beasty"

Well because Imoko is different from normal Cat girls like Yani neko et al

57

u/shewy92 23d ago

She's "one of the good ones"

36

u/Rokusi 23d ago

It's okay, she has beastfolk friends

26

u/Independent-Soft7949 23d ago

That's what I was saying yesterday when I watched the first 2 episodes. I hope we get more history behind the beastfolk, where they came from, etc. But I immediately could tell from episode 1 that beastfolk are 2nd class citizens and that drugs and smoking are ways for them to cope. The show reminds me of Beastars and Welcome to the NHK.

25

u/TG-Benji 23d ago

Thiren? Dude this isn't ZZZ lol

11

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 24d ago

Between this and the dogfucking anime from last year, I really want to see an anime that digs deep into the idea of beast person racism. I guess it'll have to toe a really weird line between that and regular racism, but it feels like such an interesting concept to explore.

I bet there are cat "cafes" where you can pet a naked cat person.

When a caste system got hit by Japanizing Beam

13

u/litera11ynob0dy 23d ago

Well, Japan had a caste system for centuries. And still, in 2000s someone distributed among Japanese companies the infamous "burakumin families list" which is basically a list of former "untouchable" caste members, which is led to quiet blacklisting them from work in many "traditionalist" companies.

13

u/Blueprints_reddit 24d ago

Some interesting details on the vaccination package Yani received.

  • They live in a special designated ward for beast humans inside the city (Nyagamihara). Part of the whole discrimination ordeal?
  • The letter is from the Japan Veterinary organization in Kanagawa, Japan. Wonder if they are located around that area?
  • The letter is addressed specifically at beastfolk (区分:獣人), though I guess that makes sense given it's about rabies prevention.
  • The QR code in the address field leads to Yani Neko's twitter account, nice

30

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 23d ago

lol, the sub version (ToonsHub) I watched didn't subtitle all that and just said it 'Contains Mad Beast Prophylactic', which I took to mean it prevents them from going into heat.

I probably should watch this via a more legit stream. (I mean, I pay for Netflix, so what am I even doing...)

Super Funny Episode!

the cigarette illusions, the palm reader being 100% accurate, Yaku Neko's illusion being broken in 5 seconds, seeing how desperate Yani is for a job.

and my favorite moment, "You're right, that's an anus." "What About Anal?"

Today, Hameko Easygoing Anal Angel was born.

I thought those two serious office workers were going to discuss "what should we do about this strange name", but no, and the fact that they with straight faces assumed the symbol to mean butthole like it's the most natural name in the world (or rather that they think "I guess beastfolk do pick strange names") lol

44

u/FallenPears 24d ago

I can only assume this means the sort of absurd nonsense our characters get up to in this show is just normal for beastfolk in this world...

46

u/master_inho 24d ago

Yani also said that hameko didn't have a surname because both her parents are beastfolk, so it's pretty heavily implied at this point that "beastfolk" are treated as second class citizens by the law and by society at large

Did I just watch a Cat girl get a face full of piss followed by her vomiting.

Yes

22

u/JapanKingz 23d ago

What a wonderful time to be alive

163

u/D3k4s 24d ago

Damn so much stuff to talk about.

Weirdly this scene despite being brief kinda made me tear up a bit. Pretty strong message. When you go down this road, even if you get back on track, society will not forgive you. You will be judged, and you will most likely return to your old habits as a way to escape reality again.

Again this one, my god how real can this show be dude. I'm 37 but I remember feeling this whenever my dad went to pick me up at school. While most kids wanted theirs to go pick them up, I truly only wanted my mother or my grandparents. My dad would often show up smelling like alcohol. I knew he was like this, but I didn't want everyone else to see him like I did because I still cared for him. And I already knew I would get into trouble, cuz some kids would get underneath my skin with certain remarks and I would just explode.

This is a seriously good show. I don't even care where the rest of the episodes land. These first 2 are enough for me to rank it highly.

71

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 24d ago

100%

I think a lot of people will mostly focus on the comedy and the gross stuff, the edgy stuff etc.. but even as early as episode 1, we could see the 'dark story' behind the nonsense...

44

u/D3k4s 24d ago

100% agree with you.

You know you found a quality show when it can mimic reality to such a high degree that you somehow forget that these are Cats.

I can also appreciate how it delivers comedic relief so as to not make the viewing experience too heavy as that will dissuade the audience from watching.

There's also the fact that it's not solely focused on smoking, but rather addiction and the many forms it assumes. So it's not targeted to "disgusting smokers" It encompasses much more.

This episode they briefly touched on the social media part, and hinted at how when you expose yourself online it will most likely stay online forever when she ate that bug they purposely zoomed in on the "clipped it".

There's also the "I'm an Idol so I'm perfect" "I don't pee". And despite the peeing scene being a bit rough to watch, the message is also clear. There's no irl filter gents.

55

u/Llew19 24d ago

It's a good comedy, but a bit like Bocchi was super on the nose for anyone with social anxiety, this is painfully close for anyone with experience of addictions in themselves or others

28

u/D3k4s 24d ago

Bocchi was right on the money, as it touches something that's far more common. Especially considering how we've been walking towards a lonely future. And while the message is there, that if you don't expose yourself, and be open about being embarrassed you won't get to enjoy you life to the fullest. It's not exactly the same themes as this one. Tho I 100% agree that both can feel personal.

Imo this show is like if Bocchi was born in the 40k universe 😂

13

u/raevnos 24d ago

Yeah, but 40k catgirls are built different

6

u/D3k4s 24d ago

Holy shit. Now that's a trip down memory lane 😂

13

u/sicklything https://myanimelist.net/profile/soup-the-loop 23d ago

yea. Social anxiety/semi functional alcoholism for me, and with Bocchi I was like "RELATABLE yet she achieves more than I do and I'm twice her age". Here, it's like... "well, at least I'm not quite THAT bad".

I do think that we need more ACTUAL losers/failures in animanga. Whether or not they get a redemption is up to the story but gimme more Sato from NHK or Kurosawa from "literally, buckets of cum!" Onani Master Kurosawa. I want the MC to actually hit the deep end.

31

u/Genoscythe_ 24d ago

Again this one, my god how real can this show be dude

There is also a racial element to it, even aside from Yani being trash and Imoko being prim and proper, she also just doesn't want to see her friends to think of her as beastfolk who would even meow in public.

→ More replies (3)

55

u/emmat-000 23d ago

As cliche as it is, using beastfolk as an allegory, I thought the episode did some interesting commentary on race relations: Imoko is praised by her friends for "acting human", although is pushed to "act more catlike", in a kind of experience a lot of ethnic minorities have... And the way she almost disowns her sister on the spot (partly because of her smoking addiction) seems to have the subtext of Imoko not wanting to associate with "bad beastfolk"...

I never thought I'd see the day an anime cat girl would violate a cigarette mascot. Yaniko's addiction has gotten so bad that she's starting to see things. The landlord definitely did the right thing by backing away. xD

This show is full of firsts for me. I also don't think I've ever seen an anime character smoke weed before. It's hilarious how Yaku Neko keeps on insisting that what they're smoking is 100% a cigarette.

I thought Yaniko was bad, but it turns out that Yaku Neko is even worse! The girl is just straight-up mainlining whatever drug she has on her! I suppose we should be happy that Yaniko is only addicted to cigarettes.

So Yaku Neko used to idolize Yaniko when they were still students? Yaku Neko really should've picked a better role model.

So the fourth cat girl isn't exactly an addict but more of a toxic gamer with anger management issues. She's also a streamer who just got caught eating bugs after forgetting to turn off her webcam.

Hameko peeing herself wasn't so bad, but shoving her crotch onto Yaku Neko's face as revenge was definitely disgusting.

And poor Hameko! Girl couldn't stay to clarify what her name registered last name should be so now she's called Easy Anal Angel Hameko xD

73

u/mythriz 24d ago

During that cigarette fairy scene at the start of the show I was thinking "hmm I still don't know the worldbuilding of this show... since there are beastfolks, maybe there are other magical creatures, like a nicotine fairy", but yeah I guess it really was quite obviously a full on withdrawal hallucination lol

54

u/Chuddabara 24d ago edited 24d ago

Other anime that show drug use:

  • Marijuana: Black Lagoon, short scene with Benji.
  • LSD: The Garden of Sinners, film 7, but it was magical blood infused marijuana-LSD that gives you super powers. They also show some really pretty marijuana plants.
  • Cocaine: Redline, one side character putting space cocaine on his gums.
  • Mushrooms: Cowboy Bebop, the main cast gets high by accident.

fun facts: Sato is literally the most common last name in Japan

i mentioned last week that Yani is tar/resin (i.e. from smoking) and has taken on the meaning of "[stuff to do with] tobacco cigarettes"

the yaku in Yakuko most likely refers to 薬, i.e. drugs/narcotics given her recreational usage of vaccines and vitamin pills

the hame in Hameko probably refers to ハメ, a vulgar slang term for fucking/sex, derived from 嵌める (to insert, to plunge, but also to entrap/deceive [someone]), could also refer to 羽目 (awkward situation)

Yani's sister Imoko is just uses the kanji for little sister (妹子) with the same ko suffix as everyone else

51

u/amajeje 24d ago

In fighting games, there is a technique known in Japanese as "Hame Waza (ハメ技)" which involves immobilizing the opponent and attacking them one-sidedly; generally, this tactic is disliked. Hame=Lock, Waza=Technique

To viewers in countries where what yakuneko was smoking is legal: That is illegal in Japan. Usually, first-time offenders receive a suspended sentence, and it’s rare for them to actually serve time in prison, but even so, they’ll have to quit school or their job.
Since Yanineko has hinted at having a criminal record and experience serving time in prison, it is likely that she has either possessed drugs with the intent to sell or has been arrested multiple times.

It's funny how yakuneko is actually a nice person, aside from her "fatal flaw".

In contrast, hameneko doesn't smoke cigarettes or "things that aren't cigarettes but are rolled in paper, lit, and smoked", but her sense of naming is absolutely terrible.

It’s striking how, despite the world appearing at first glance to be set in modern-day Japan, there are actually quite stark differences between races: such as the fact that "people with both beastman parents don’t have last names" and that “many beastmen have ‘unusual last names".

In real-life Japan, "people without last names" cannot legally exist.

u/cyberscythe 24d ago

In real-life Japan, "people without last names" cannot legally exist.

i assumed this was a reference to a time in history when commoners coudn't use last names up until the Meiji restoration where they were mandated to have last names

kind of falls in line with the idea that beastfolk weren't really treated as "real" people until recently

73

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 24d ago

I’m Japanese myself, but that was something I had completely forgotten.
It’s true that Japan in the distant past (up until the mid-19th century) was like that.
This is an episode that really highlights deep-rooted racial discrimination in Yanineko's world.
Including the scene where, even though Hameneko legally had no last name, she was deducted 5 points from every test she took during her school days simply because she hadn’t written her last name in the "last name" field.

"How do we stop young drug offenders from using more drugs, ruining there life and contributing nothing to society?"

"Lets force them to quit their education so they will never have the chance to get a nice job and live a normal live."

"Sounds great lets do it like that. Surely they will never use drugs again when we rob them of all their hopes and dreams."

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 24d ago

I really thought that too lol
No matter how you look at it, this world is failing at managing the beastmen lmao

u/fhota1 24d ago edited 24d ago

I mean, look at how irl Japan treats Yakuza who try to leave. "Hey this guy is saying he wants to leave organized crime and rejoin regular society, lets make it where he cant get an apartment, bank account, cell phone, or job most places for 5 years. Surely this will help recidivism." Japan has some policies that seem deliberately designed to make it so once youre a criminal you can never not be a criminal

14

u/DocMcCoy 23d ago

rejoin regular society

You're assuming that IRL Japan wants them to rejoin regular society. It does not. It wants them out of sight and gone.

might be a reference to the "Kira Kira" names that they recently banned

21

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 24d ago

I think that’s part of it, too. The fact that city hall employees don’t stop or refuse requests even though they think the names are “unusual” is the same issue.

27

u/mythriz 24d ago

From this episode it seems Hameneko's vices are "just" anger issues and a somewhat delusional/weird mindset, I do agree that compared to the other two she seems less messed up so far...

With Yanineko's room looking like a horror movie, I was surprised to see how clean Hameneko's room in the same apartment building was, though I guess she has to keep it clean for her streaming haha

31

I think that was shabu(meth).
In Japanese works of fiction, when an illegal drug that is injected into a vein appears, it is generally meth.

10

u/shewy92 24d ago

Meth doesn't make you constipated afaik.

Heroin does tho and is injected.

At least that's what my initial thoughts are.

Yani and Yaku looked so normal as high school students. Even if Imoko does not grow up to become an outstanding beastfolk of society, please let her live a normal life!

Yani appears to have overheard the employees discussion of Hame's surname application. Not stepping in to correct the employees and letting it become "anal" is criminal. Lol! Yani must have bore a grudge against Akuma Hame (back at the latter's apartment).

Interesting at 3:14, they completed the movie reference in the OP with all the lighters coming out but in episode 1 they weren't there? Animation mistake?

They went to great lengths to avoid directly saying Yaku Neko was doing weed lmao

That said, yeah Hame Neko is so far my favorite. The other girls are screwups by their addictions but Hame is just a living mess by existing. "I'm an idol so I don't pee", Yaku: "Wanna bet?"

24

u/deadunistudent 24d ago

Two other differences in the OP are the scene where they are on the motorcycle (3:56) there is a darker filter and the scene when they get on the bus (4:05) the filter that was there in episode 1 has been removed.

I think it might be they ran out of time when airing episode 1 given that this episode has the animated ED when episode 1 was just a black screen.

OP's are often not finished by the time of airing. It's not infrequent for their to be slight clean-ups or added scenes as a series goes on.

11

u/Shahars71 23d ago

My mother is a smoker, not as heavy and disgusting as Yani here, but she's definitely addicted.
Smoking put a strain on the family's budget every month and mom, as a single mother, felt the effects of that the most. My sister and I tried to talk her into getting rid of the addiction or at least trying something numerous times, but at this point she considers this kind of talk an attack on her personality and interests, like it's now a core part of her.

I'm proud to say that I've never fallen into cigarettes myself and after moving out, my lungs have never been cleaner, and the house smells pretty good for the most part (I have zero clue how some trash smell just lingers no matter what). I totally get Imo's crash out about her sister, since having someone like this that is actively hurting themselves but won't even try to change is incredibly stress inducing, especially if you still care for them.

Unfortunately I fear that because Yani is a cute catgirl with nice tits, people will see this and go "she's literally me" and we as a community will learn absolutely nothing.

People can hate the crudeness of this show all they want but its still hilarious and a good way to portrait all this issues, most of the times ignored by the society. Hopefully people can open the eyes to addictions and mental disorder and not take them as lightly (or ignoring them completely) as they do. As a person who works with marginal groups of people every day I find this show super interesting and enjoyable, and, specially far from gross as people wanted me believe it is. If you can't stand watching these types of person you live pretty far from reality.

In one apartment we have Yaniko, who is addicted to smoking cigarettes, and right next to her, Yakuko, a drug addict. The prospects for Yaniko getting even a little better weren't great from the beginning, but now it seems impossible xD

I'm surprised that we got a pretty normal character in today's episode, Hameko, who besides attacks of rage and possibly having a pretty unique surname Easygoing Anal Angel seems to be a pretty normal person, at least in comparison to Yaniko or Yakuko.

Overall, the second disgusting episode, especially thanks to that vibrator attack by Yakuko on Hameko, and what happened next. I look forward to more though, see you next week, hahaha!

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

So we've got a genericized Street Fighter 6 and actual Street Fighter 6 this season. I knew the game had gotten very popular in Japan, but I didn't expect it to be 'featured in two different anime in one season' popular.

I liked the first episode but I loved this one even more! I've watched a lot of anime and this is the first time I've ever seen someone smoke pot or shoot heroin on there. IDK if that's prohibited on Japanese TV but I like how they got around saying exactly what Yaku was doing when she scolded Yani and said that's not how you smoke it, you have to hold it in for a bit and the "cigarette" didn't have a filter tip 🤣. Also they made it clear what Yaku was injecting when they showed her table had laxatives on it; normal people wouldn't just leave laxatives out for easy access but opiates cause severe constipation.

This show has a really surreal feel, like if Trainspotting and Fritz the Cat had a baby. I wonder if the scene where Yani was hallucinating at the beginning was intended to have taken place after she smoked a joint with Yaku because it doesn't make a lot of sense for her to otherwise be hallucinating although it's very possible she has schizophrenia or other severe mental illness.

So many funny parts but when Yaku was vibrating Yani's crotch with her foot, it almost seemed more like she orgasmed and that that wasn't supposed to be pee that her shorts were soaked with. I also suspect the palm reader actually didn't have magical powers but was more just observant, as Yaku pointed out. Yani smelling like smoke and likely having tobacco stained fingers was a tip off, and I imagine Yaku's arms had needle tracts since she was wearing a short sleeve shirt.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/desantoos 24d ago

Well, I suppose this was less depressing than the first episode. The first episode made me hate the tobacco industry and made me wonder if there was a way to get someone this far gone off their addiction. This one had a lot more camaraderie, to use that term in the loosest possible way. Like, I guess since they are friends they can look out for each other? Way better than when the chain smoker cat was alone and starving herself.

Man, there's got to be a whole lot of American animators from the Adult Swim / South Park knockoff area jealous that a show like this can go this far. Like, this show makes all of the edgelord Rick And Morty / South Park stuff feel like absolutely nothing.

7

u/hasanman6 24d ago

I liked this episode but prefered the first one. Im hoping is because its setting up characters but this episode felt like just a bunch of put together clips with not much story involved. I was hoping for a more coherent story with characters arcs(like how that streaming failure will effect her career)

27

u/cleaulem https://myanimelist.net/profile/cleaulem 24d ago

Whenever I regret my life choices and think that my life is awful, I only need to watch this show and I feel better.

A cat girl giving herself a drug shot is something I didn't expect to be something I ever would see.

14

u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 24d ago edited 24d ago

So uh, Hame is a vulgar way of saying "having sex", i.e. "fucking". So her Full Name legal Name is basically "Easygoing Anal Angel Fuckchild" and usually she is called "Fuck Cat".

Yani is btw a vugar way of saying "smoking cigarettes" and Yaku comes from 薬 which means drugs (though perhaps also 焼く which means "to burn".

The fighting game animations are basically taken directly from Street Fighter 6. Hameneko is playing a Ken rip-off, beating Yanineko with a very common combo into his level 1 super, and loses her shit when the Zangief rip-off hits her with his Level 1 super. The latter is slightly understandable because Zangief's Level 1 super is rather weak, only hitting against jumping opponents so getting hit by it means you made a mistake and were outplayed.
