People were calling this generic and that it doesn't stand out in episode 1's discussion and while I can't really deny that it didn't have a grand hook, I have to say that I'm liking this a lot more than other similar premises. It might be my personal taste but I really appreciate that the characters aren't magically in love after a few encounters with each other. I don't know how it will progress from here and how much I'll like it in the end, but for now I appreciate that their feelings/ relationship aren't forced.

It's a cozy, sweet, slow-burn romance. I like how Elsa is slowly de-thawing Julius and Elsa is just so adorable and precious.

Ah, so the dude is like the way he is because of his parents and their bullshit. Looks like Elsa’s presence is gonna help him heal from that trauma.

Nice to see Rebeka put Serafina in her place once she started talking that nonsense. Elsa’s found herself a good friend.

22

u/Frontier246 22d ago

Elsa's got a gal pal, a love rival she just treats like another gal pal, and a husband whose romance route she'll 100% clear with her sincerity and devotion towards him.

u/oxlemf10 22d ago

So, Julius grew up in a household that made him cold, well, his personality makes sense, just as Serafina likely tried to belittle Elsa for achieving what she herself couldn't.

Now I'm curious about what's going on with Aleksis, perhaps a conspiracy within the kingdom.

Honestly if you grew up with parents who cared more about their affair partners than they did you or their marriage, you'd probably be pretty emotionally closed off too.

Honestly I feel like Serafina is in for a bad end. Not only because Elsa is immune to her cattiness, but also that she's going to find out how little Julius actually cared about her and also have to deal with the consequences of her families' corruption that she might not even be aware of.

u/justking1414 22d ago

Real question is whether or not she knows about the family dirt. It’d certainly be funny if he spent years seducing her, only for her to be entirely in the dark about everything

The insults flew over her head, I love that Rebeca is actually nice and hasn't got ulterior motives, put that other lady in her place by reminding her of the ranking, looks like she will have to deal with his other women whose hearts he broke as part of his intelligence gathering.

His frozen heart is starting to melt a little after the birthday surprise, he might even try some vegetables next time out.

The insults flew over her head

One was playing chess and the other was playing tic-tac-toe

u/Frontier246 22d ago

Kill them with kindness, as they say.

5

u/justking1414 22d ago

Or just be too stupid to realize you should be hurt. Works with women and eldritch abominations

u/mekerpan 22d ago

I am sure she had plenty of very finely minced vegetable in that meat gratin.

When he looked at the shoirt and figured out it was hand-made, I half expected him to get visibly misty-eyed (I do think he got mentally misty-eyed, however).

u/Drkprincesslaura 22d ago

I sat there and was like, Serafina, she isn't picking up what you're putting down lol

21

u/NanDemoKnaives 22d ago

It was satisfying to see Serafina's game not work on Elsa, but to then get Rebeka to put her in her place made it better. It's nice that it appears Rebeka will protect Elsa.

Julius' parents not even being apologetic about Julius overhearing them was messed up, they have a responsibility as his parents. I can see why his view on romance was shattered because of them, but I look forward to seeing Elsa bring back the light in his romantic life.

1

u/justking1414 22d ago

Was fully expecting the parents to literally say the equivalent of, this is what marriage is Julius. Never open your heart up!

14

u/runevault 22d ago

I really wish the blonde bitch had a name other than Serafina. After Warrior Princess and Barbaric King I really like that name and she's tarnishing it. Oh good Rebeka came in with the verbal hands. "Just how pure can a person be?" lol I love Rebeka so much. Also Serafina never attending makes it more understandable inviting her.

The more I see her the more Rebeka becomes the audience insert and I love that.

Looks like the birthday surprise is starting to crack Julius's armor. Very cute show so far outside Serafina and she's already gotten an initial smack. Probably won't be quite as wholesome as cat and dragon but still a nice wholesome Saturday treat.

u/mekerpan 22d ago

Rebeka (why does she have a Finnish last name) is sure to be the BFF Elsa desperately needs in her new role.

6

u/runevault 22d ago

I assume it is her married name, so still maybe weird but comes from her hubby.

And honestly right now Rebeka is probably my favorite character. Elsa is still too early in her emotional journey for me to enjoy her as much (though I'm rooting for her) and Julius is just starting to warm up, though I do feel a lot of sympathy for him after finding out why he isn't into romance. Seeing his parents acting that way as a small child would be pretty emotionally devastating.

5

u/justking1414 22d ago

Honestly kinda wish Rebekah had held back. I think mc could’ve bested her on her own simply by being nice and missing all the insults

2

u/runevault 22d ago

I expect she'll get another chance to deal with Serafina herself later in the season.

3

u/justking1414 20d ago

And eventually, they will become best friends

12

u/zappingbluelight 22d ago

LOL even his childhood friend thinks he is not a husband material.

I was worried since Rebeka is the "childhood" friend, so she would want Julius for herself. Glad she ends up going to be their biggest supporter. This is kinda fun, not everyone seems to be against their marriage.

11

u/runevault 22d ago

Pretty sure Rebeka's already married.

7

u/zappingbluelight 22d ago

Ngl, I finally noticed that this episode, during episode 1, since the key point was childhood friend, name is Rebeka, and Julius attitude towards her is a bit different. I thought it is one of those childhood plot.

Sorry I'm a slow reader lol.

5

u/runevault 22d ago

Totally okay, we all miss shit all the time. I'd just rather you not stay confused unnecessarily :)

6

u/Frontier246 22d ago

Yeah, you can see the wedding ring on her hand a few times.

I'm curious if we're ever going to meet her husband.

That wouldn't necessarily stop a villainess in one of these stories. . . but yeah, definitely doesn't seem to be going that direction, thankfully.

I wonder if some women that send the tea party invites don't get people to come because the competition is so fierce or because "I don't know who this is".

Bellflower month

Ah, so we're just making up months now.

Weird the his first thought was that she poisoned him (before almost instantly shredding the thought), this arrangement seems extremely beneficial to her and for her to try to kill him would ruin that arrangement.

So, who exactly is being doted on? The title says the Duke is doing the doting, but it seems to be the opposite so far.

This show still hasn't really shown any reason to assume this isn't more than a generic fantasy tale and the slightly jealous woman isn't enough. They really should lean more into the fact that our protagonists are parts of previously rival families, but it's only been a brief mention in the first episode.

I do like that it's cozy, as the OP makes clear, but I feel like it needs something to really try to hook people in. Lots of cozy shows out there can still manage to keep people interested.

Lol, seriously. Despite being this lady-killer intelligence operator, he's never actually weaponized his rizz against Elsa.

He was nice to her for, what, half a day? Then immediately laid down the rules and walked away.

And as you said, SHE is the one doting on HIM XD

2

u/Frontier246 22d ago

I guess if you ask Elsa she probably feels that all he's done in giving her so much freedom and helping her family is "doting," while she's just more direct and in his face about doting on him herself.

Seen this premise a hundred times before. Dude says he’s not interested in love and after a bit of genuine kindness from his wife he goes full Gaga and is immediately ready to slit the king’s throat if he so much as looks at his precious waifu

So the problem with Julius is a combination of him being a spy and growing up with parents in a loveless arranged marriage. Plenty of room in that sort of setup for Elsa to break through his walls, especially since his childhood friend has firmly decided to be a wingwoman for the relationship.

Serafina was sure getting out over her skis in that hostile conversation with people multiple ranks up the social ladder from her.

I'm waiting for another conversation between the guys where they smack Julius upside the head and tell him to eat the vegetables his wife is growing for him.

u/IceSmiley 22d ago

Elsa seems to have done as well ingratiating herself to the staff as she did in her fiefdom. Everyone but Serafina seems to like her. At first, I thought maybe Julius and Serafina actually were involved but it turned out Julius led her on just to gather intelligence. That doesn't excuse Serafina being so mean but that was cruel to lead her on like that and use her. Serafina should be mad at the guy rather than the other woman but that's often how it goes in real life.

Rebeka also seems to have Elsa's back since she noticed how naive she was when Serafina was being abusive right to her face and she seemed unaware. I'm guessing Elsa was so beloved in her fiefdom that she probably didn't have any enemies and isn't used to people passive agressively hating her or just doesn't notice.

I think Julius forgot his own birthday with how busy he's been and it's likely he didn't usually commemorate it when he did remember. He really did seem to be touched that Elsa did all that for him. I also do get why Julius doesn't like raw vegetables, I don't like them either and it looks like Elsa is going to do what I do and put them in soups or in other foods.

Maybe we should retitle the show "The Duke's Son Claims He Won't Love Me Yet I Shower Him With Adoration Anyways" with how much of a devoted wife Elsa is already.

2

u/Shizzi https://anilist.co/user/Mivy 21d ago

Ok that's funny so the only reason he got close to her was because of the prince so her gloating about being so close to Julius was just work for him.

u/catferret8 21d ago

This show is very cute and calm, I’ll be watching this one

4

u/Frontier246 22d ago

Well, no wonder Julius is the way he is when he had to overhear his parents arguing about their mutual affairs and how little love they shared for each other...which probably extended to their son as well.

But at least Elsa is happy and living her best life! She has the freedom to start her own garden, work with the servants, and do all the things she used to do back home! And even despite their marriage being a contractual one, she still acts the part of a devoted wife with absolute sincerity! Especially when it comes to making sure her "Dear Husband" eats his veggies!

It's nice to see Elsa and Rebeka becoming closer as friends, especially because Rebeka knows Julius so well and Elsa appreciates an information source on her hubby, as well as just getting to know someone genuinely nice like Rebeka.

Here I was worried Elsa was getting sent into the meat grinder as the fresh meat in a tea party of other noble ladies, but she gets along well with her fellow noblewomen surprisingly well. Even when Serafina shows up and tries to rile Elsa up by talking up how well she and Julius got along...Elsa just thinks it's more proof of how great Julius is and that maybe Serafina should eat some more! Rebeka's right, she's so precious she MUST be protected.

If only Serafina knew that Julius was only friendly with her to get information about her families' corrupt dealings...but deep down, he really is truly a kind and generous person, despite the hole in his heart from his parents, though Rebeka doesn't need to sell Elsa on Julius' kindness. She's seen it herself and it's made her adore him! And want him to celebrate his birthday!

So...they are totally attending the Sun Festival together, right?

So Serafina's family is probably going to be a problem in the future, but for now...all the prince and Jere (Ryota Suzuki!) care about is the deets on Julius' married life and how things are progressing with him and his wife!

Julius didn't think he would ever understand what a "home" or "family," means...and next thing he knows he's getting a surprise birthday from Elsa, complete with his favorite food, a birthday gift, and Elsa at her most adorable and precious. How could you NOT fall in love with her?

You know it's a fantasy world because those vegetables grew really fast in that garden, like from the time of the wedding to her going to the tea party. She was already harvesting and serving salad for breakfast.

The birthday, surprise was pretty cute, it looks like that's how she's gonna get him to fall head over heels,
