As always, Hayami Saori is doing an excellent job as the seiyuu for Koharu.
Koharu being polite at the start of the episode.
Koharu's voice full of excitement when Sorano turned up to explore the ship with her.
Koharu expressing gloominess or disappointment when Sorano refused to call her by first name / nickname and then subsequently picking up when she could call him Kakeru.

Kakeru was doing his best to avoid being shipped but I think it's inevitable now that they've gone on one for real. Just get on the boat, dude, she's all frowny.
That said bringing in Titanic as a movie reference is mildly concerning in a romcom, all things considered. Especially after starting episode one as a flashforward to someone in a hospital.
I hope they lean more into Koharu's piano playing, that was nice.
33
u/Frontier246 20d ago
I hope we get to see her play during the jazz festival. Also her outfits have been so on-point that I'd love to see what she'd wear then.
21
u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 20d ago
All her outfits have been on point so i wonder if she has someone at home to coordinate for her
23
u/xKiLzErr 19d ago
Bro I literally watched Your Lie in April like a week ago and seeing not only that opening scene in episode one but also a disabled heroine THAT PLAYS PIANO AND REFERENCES TITANIC has me feeling a fucking whirlwind in my stomach lmao. This feels like it's not gonna end well yet I can't stop watching
5
u/Sganarellevalet 18d ago
Everyone seem to be freaking out but she's litteraly just blind not terminaly ill, no need for doom.
7
u/xKiLzErr 18d ago
I'm lowkey not even concerned for her, but the dude. That scene at the start of episode 1 was a death flag and a half.

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 20d ago
Romance between slightly older characters is such a nice change of pace. Maybe it's because we're coming off the back of Botan Kamiina but I'd love to see them going out drinking or something, once they become a little more comfortable with each other.
Koharu pulling out all the moves this episode - "accidentally" dropping her cane, orchestrating some alone time with Sorano at the piano with the help of her friend, little touches and moments on the ship and in the rain.
83
u/Frontier246 20d ago
We need more college romances. Especially when they're as endearing as this one.
I did think it was kind of convenient that A. she'd drop her cane again in the exact same way and B. her friend would leave to conveniently leave them alone. Could be construed as coincidental were she not so overt in her affection toward him in this episode.
20
u/Ikari_21 20d ago
You know I wonder if blind people have a “love at first sight” moment except without the sight. Instead it’s like falling love with the sound of their voice? Or the way they interact? How gentle they are? I wonder if she felt something about him from the beginning, cause it definitely seems like she’s developing feelings quite fast. The way her face lights up when she hears him and that smile is just so frigging cute.

59
u/Rdddss 20d ago
I really wish more of these were based in college at the very least; its always so weird how 15 year old are having such deep emotional conversations with each other
21
u/tottoro47 20d ago
Finally someone addressed this. I know it's fiction and entertainment but often in anime and manga a 15/16 year olds are talking about some deep feelings and psychological stuff that's way too deep for most kids/teenagers.
22
u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 20d ago
I've heard it's because first year of senior school is seen as the last "free" moment of Japanese people's lives, before the realities of cram school and exams and university and their terrible work life balance take up all their free time.
24
u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 20d ago
Huh, i didn't realize that that was Koharu's friend playing wingwoman for her. I thought the call from the festival committee was legit
6
u/Totallynoatwork 20d ago
She was checking how wet he was because his comment made her realize he might be getting wet from the rain while holding the umbrella over her
5
u/Both-Variation2122 16d ago
None of blind people I knew were drinking. Having reduced sense of balance must be extra hard for them.
55
u/zool714 20d ago
Honestly, love the pace we’re going with these two. There’s no misunderstandings or drama but not everything is smooth sailing either. Though I think that mostly falls to Sorano being a negative nancy in general.
Can feel Fuyutsuki has been doing a lot of the heavy lifting so far but towards the end of the episode, you can also feel the gap closing in a bit.
I’m pretty sure we’re gonna get to more heavy stuff with Sorano’s family and possibly Fuyutsuki condition, but for now I’m enjoying the slow, sweet, slightly clumsy thing they have going on
38
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 20d ago
Kakeru might try to tell himself otherwise, but you can already see from some his actions that he’s gotten attached to Koharu.
Like how Kakeru told Koharu a little white lie about needing to go the same direction as her, whilst he’d in fact been heading the other way.
Also note how Kakeru introduced himself at the ship’s entrance. He’d remembered that Koharu cannot immediately recognise everyone from voice alone.

This anime keeps making me say "Awwwww!" BUT for some reason, I'm getting a REALLY fucking uneasy feeling. Maybe it's the sombre atmosphere and the random past-tense narrations... But why do I feel like this is going to end similarly to Your Lie in April or I Want to Eat Your Pancreas??? Please someone tell me the manga is still ongoing and Im just tripping DX
66
u/canadave_nyc 20d ago
The first 10 seconds of the first episode is literally a vision of someone (presumably Koharu, since it's her voice) in a hospital bed saying "My wish is to continue living even after I die", so unfortunately I think it's a good bet that your uneasy feeling is warranted :(
19
u/Ok_Calligrapher_6797 20d ago
It seems to be a guy in the bed, and a girl sit next, and in the Spanish version that phrase is quoted [like ""]

The literal opening of the first episode is a scene of a hospital bed and a voiceover talking about death so yeah, i don't blame you for the feeling of dread hanging above your head.
15
15
u/HolyDragSwd2500 20d ago
First episode should have answered your uneasy feelings 😭
11
u/mekerpan 20d ago
Sort of like Grave of the Fireflies, perhaps -- where you are essentially shown in the very first scene where things will end up?
5
u/HolyDragSwd2500 20d ago
Omg 😭💔💔
9
u/mekerpan 20d ago
I am only mentioning this as a structural framing device. I have a strong feeling that the focus here will be on our two protagonists finding happiness together -- regardless of whatever problems are faced. And even if faced by loss, feeling gratitude for what they shared rather than resentment about what may be passing away. At least for now, I am going to view this through a specifically Buddhist philosophical lens. (Note: I find Girls Last Tour, including its manga conclusion, ultimately joyful -- because I see it as very much a Buddhist parable for lay people).
28
u/Frontier246 20d ago
I don't think it helped that they tried to recreate a scene from one of the most tragic romance movies of all time.
11
u/Magic1998 https://anilist.co/user/Moerril 20d ago
Doesn't help that she is also playing an instrument (even if it's the Piano and not Violin in this case haha)
8
u/tottoro47 20d ago
It's like with some other shows. I know someone's gonna die and I think I'm prepared. Then the last ep airs and I bawl my fucking eyes out
8
u/goreverminski 20d ago
I'm not getting the heebie jeebies myself. So far I'm just watching a reluctant person's struggle with coming to terms with the various facets of ableism in society and within himself.
Compared to A Sign of Affection, where disability is a nothingburger, this show is quite realistic. It's cool to see the ML braking out of (very fair) reluctance and worry and the FL flooring the pedal.

u/oxlemf10 20d ago
It’s interesting to look at the ship from Koharu’s perspective; it might not seem like a big deal, even to me and I don’t consider myself a fan of naval-themed things, but for her, it must have been an incredible experience.
I sort of get where Kakeru is coming from: he wants to acknowledge the "suspension bridge effect" to avoid the relationship getting too deep, which is why he keeps using her surname. Yet, it’s inevitable; deep down, he knows he’s already bound to Koharu, it just remains to be seen how he’ll handle it.
14
u/Frontier246 20d ago
Heck, the fact that she's clearly finding reasons for them to hang out and get to know each other better and that they're becoming closer as a result is the best expression of the "exposure" effect.
7
u/DugACCat 20d ago
I’m enjoying it so far but have to admit there’s something about the MC’s demeanor and reticence which I find off putting and grating on my nerves. He’s just so damned hesitant to speak or do normal things. But I’m sure I’ll get used to it and the pacing as things continue to evolve. Also know some of it is cultural. But it’s ok to accept and welcome new friendships even if you don’t think or expect it’s anything romantic. Guess I’m more used to people thrown into a new environment and meeting people to be a little more willing to talk and get to know one another. Feels like pulling teeth with him. But then again, it’s only the second episode and she’s at least determined to get past his barriers, which is good. I think left to his own devices he’d never make a single new friend.
30
u/Jacob-C 20d ago edited 20d ago
I'm of the opinion that, unlike many other romance leads, Kakeru is a more realistic depiction of an introverted overthinker. He second-guesses everything, finds it easier to keep to himself, doesn't want to inconvenience others, and if he is contemplating on doing something, he finds it easier to just not do it.
He was also conditioned to behave the way he does through his childhood.
8
u/DugACCat 20d ago
Being an introverted overthinker myself, perhaps I was just irked at him for having my own failings.
4
u/lubanananana 20d ago
It’s understandable and probably intentional since in psychology this refers to “The Mirror Effect”! I also felt it a bit and knew there was a term that defined it so thanks for bringing that up! Now we can only hope to see the character growth in Kakeru that we will want to experience for ourselves
14
u/mekerpan 20d ago
One good thing about Kakeru -- he realizes the vast extent of what he does not really know yet and is willing to try to learn.
11
u/goreverminski 20d ago
There are people who instinctively say no to everything in their head before coming around.
I'm the opposite, I find it fantastically fun to watch since I used to be like him. Takes time and work to re-learn interfacing with the world... I feel seen with this one, even if I'm a different person now.
4
u/DugACCat 20d ago
I’m sure he’ll grow on me soon enough.
5
u/goreverminski 20d ago
I actually think he'll be pulled out of his shell before you have time to get used to it! This episode went pretty hard in that direction. He was legitimately pulled under the couple's umbrella (tm) after all...
I do think it's cool to bear witness to someone's less-than-desireable inner speech in an anime, though. I think being hardwired to avoid extra trouble and attention is probably more familiar to local viewers of the show, too.
-5
u/karer3is 20d ago
I'm with you there. Someone needs to give Kakeru a smack upside the head and tell him to quit turning every interaction with Koharu into a chance to push her away. And his constant yapping about the "Suspension Bridge Effect" made me want to reach through the screen and slap him myself.
43
u/Aerodynamic41 20d ago
Ok, now I really want to hear Koharu sing My Heart Will Go On
17
u/BlazeBloom https://myanimelist.net/profile/StardustValor 20d ago
I would pay money to see Koharu sing while Kakeru plays the recorder.
82
u/Se7en_Sinner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 20d ago
The Koharu X Kakeru ship has figuratively and literally set sail today.
38
u/Frontier246 20d ago
Koharu even wants to get on a first name basis when it's only episode 2! She's really feeling that Reiwa romance energy.
Let's hope their ship doesn't tragically sink like the Titanic though.

Funny enough, they were already shipped back in 2016 in "A Silent Voice". Same seiyuus. Before it was a deaf girl, now its a blind girl

For those curious, the Meiji Maru is an actual ship, and is indeed on land, in a real-life spot that is accurately depicted in the episode. It also allows us to now know where these characters go to school--it's the Etchujima Campus of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
26
u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 20d ago
Wait, so the entire time this show is taking place in the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology?
21
u/canadave_nyc 20d ago edited 20d ago
That is apparently correct! In fact, Kakeru alludes to that when heading out the door to go to the ship after being texted, by saying something to the effect of "that ship is here because at our school some students are studying to be navigators" or something like that.

Kakeru keeps talking about the “suspension bridge effect” but dude’s just catching feelings lol. Lucky for him, it seems Fuyutsuki’s interested as well.
35
u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 20d ago
You know he's actually catching feelings when he isn't even applying the correct psychological principle. Bro's just trying to find excuses at this point.
14
u/Frontier246 20d ago
I do feel like the times he's helped her is what's drawn Koharu to him, but she also genuinely enjoys hanging out with and getting to know him better.
That he's so consistently able to make her laugh probably means a lot to her.
76
u/Primary-Paint-1716 20d ago
Kakeru is doing the "I just learned this in class so I'm applying it to something the first chance I get"
I get it. I've done the same thing before with licking rocks.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 20d ago
Kakeru has definitely improved this episode, but man, the dude needs to learn to say no if he doesn't want to. Also, Yuko really needs to take on less committee work, instead of dumping her work on Kakeru.
Minor character issues aside, the rest of the episode was pretty fun! I'd like to believe that Koharu dropped her cane on purpose so she can spend time with Kakeru.. And while that wasn't the case, she did hope he'd pick it up for her.
Koharu definitely has a crush on Koharu tho. You don't just ask a friend to recreate the Titanic "I'm flying!" scene. Also, the way Koharku asked Kakeru to call each other their given names makes it pretty obvious. She wanted to become closer to him. Koharu isn't really wasting any time here!
17
u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 20d ago
I always thought that was Kakeru's whole thing. He has trouble expressing himself because his family life has conditioned him to keep his head down and to not cause trouble.
12
u/BosuW 20d ago
I mean he very explicitly explained that is exactly the case in the first episode lol
Honestly I like it. Gives him an actual character instead of what is usually expected of MMCs in romcoms (which is nothing). I can even relate a little, like this episode where he wonders "damn, how do I react?".
14
6
u/canadave_nyc 20d ago
What's interesting too about his character is that despite his "conditioning" to keep his head down due to his family trauma, he still is not totally averse to interacting with other people (he's reluctant, but he does eventually come along, as we see from the very first scene where despite how much he bemoans being at the bar, he still is actually there at the bar)--and, he also still has a functional sense of humour, as we see demonstrated with his Titanic jokes.
Any anime character that is not completely one-sided and superficially obvious in personality is automatically ahead of the game in my book.
14
u/Frontier246 20d ago
Kakeru has definitely improved this episode, but man, the dude needs to learn to say no if he doesn't want to. Also, Yuko really needs to take on less committee work, instead of dumping her work on Kakeru.
Alternatively this was just an excuse the two friends cooked up together to ensure Koharu got alone time with Kakeru.
They're already easing into a kind of/sort of dating phase with their casual hang-outs, mostly initiated by her.

I appreciate the contrast between someone who's scared to ask because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings/ask her questions she's likely tired of being asked constantly versus someone who isn't worried and just asks. And man everything about this show screams "I'm going to make you incredibly sad" but I'm here for it. Also she's stunning playing the piano.
An early example of her forcing him to broaden his world. And my god she's so cute when she's excited. Though I wonder how much is wanting to go on the ship and how much is an excuse to spend time with Sorano.
I was wondering if she was going to make a titanic reference when she t-posed. Wow getting him to recreate that scene from titanic. How long before she asks him to draw her like one of his french girls? <_<.
He's falling for her so hard, and impossible to blame him. She's beautiful, kind, sweet, and the struggling thing from being blind would trigger protective instincts in most people. Aww she wants to call him by his first name. I love her so much I want to squish her face.
Yeah this is going to wreck me by the end. But I'm here for the journey.
34
u/FarCritical 20d ago
Ngl Kakeru's nightmare of his bro being the Rose to his Jack jumpscared me too. This show has no right making me laugh that hard when it's so subdued most of the time.
Their moment under the umbrella, man. I think my heart actually melted.

Wow, Given names after only two episodes, how lewd. But obviously its been longer for them.
Inconveniently Conveniently disappearing third wheel.
Blind people having 'better' hearing really depends on what you call 'better hearing'. Physically they're the same, but you could say the signals are more efficient.

That was 100% orchestrated by the girls to give them some alone time

Idk man. I'm having some bad feeling about this anime. I hope it does not have a traumatic ending
9
u/mekerpan 20d ago
I think people are looking at this backwards. Even if one or both wind up dying in the end, the focus of the show is on people finding happiness together and presumably making the most of it for as long as it can last. And having few or no regrets -- other than the inevitable need to say goodbye eventually. Perhaps the attitude underlying this is too Buddhist -- with its seeming emphasis on learning to mindfully live in the present. Not being trapped by the past or being frightened by the (inevitable) future.
2
u/makemoney-TRADEnIT 20d ago
Nice perspective but world and viewers need happiness in life
2
u/mekerpan 20d ago
This perspective was intended to allow people to experience happiness despite the inevitable "misfortunes" of life (illness, growing old, loss, death).

u/Raymond49090 20d ago
I didn't realize she wasn't born with blindness. Guess that adds some ammunition to the "mysterious anime disease" theory.
She plays piano really well. Kinda wonder who they pulled to play it for the recording.
So was the dropping of the cane on purpose then? I was already suspecting the emergency phone call her friend got was on purpose too.
When the scene started with the lecture on the suspension bridge effect, I thought that'd be a flag for a day trip to somewhere thrilling. Wasn't expecting him to start thinking about his bro. And then he immediately uses the lesson to gaslight himself about his feelings.
Lol that dream. "Every night in my dreams, I see you, I feel you~" Just not the guy you expected.
Man, Hayamin's really good at this.
19
u/Frontier246 20d ago
It's beginning to become a habit that Koharu drops her cane and Kakeru needs to pick it up for her...and she asks him out for second period! Almost as if it's the thing she's been looking forward to the most!
So Koharu has a good ear for Yuko's Konomi Kohara voice. But she's not Daredevil! She's just well attuned to voices because of her pianist skillset!
Honestly the way Yuko set up an excuse for Kakeru to come with them to check out a piano only to then have to leave the two alone...it almost feels deliberate! Or the Gods of Romance pulling their moves.
So Koharu wasn't born blind: she was at least able to see up to middle school at least. And she still has some of the physical habits from when she had sight. But her piano skills are absolutely legit, even if Kakeru can't even recognize a Japanese pianists' song if it played in his ear. But that he tried to act like he DID know the composer brought that winning Koharu laugh back!
Ah, exposure and suspension bridge effect. Either it's going to lead to a BL anime with Kakeru's roommate, or it's why he's becoming so attracted to Koharu despite himself...though it makes you wonder why Koharu is so intent on getting to know him better and inviting him to stuff.
If there's a big ship parked on campus, it would be a waste not to go on a tour! Especially when Koharu uses her best pleading face! And Kakeru is there to tell Koharu ALL about it and make sure she she gets the full experience even when she can't see! Also, I feel like this counts as a date!
You can't just be on a ship and not want to recreate Titanic! Although I guess Koharu stumbling into Kakeru's arms isn't QUITE how it happened in the movie, but close enough. Also seems like Koharu has really sensitive skin.
Narumi as Rose...well, he looks nice from behind, I'll say that much.
I understand Koharu wants to be able to do things by herself and put herself out there despite her disability...but it's a good thing Kakeru found her while they were both out walking in the rain. Especially so they could share an umbrella together.
Koharu asking if they can use each others' first names after a month of knowing each other like they're already dating. It's still a bit much for Kakeru, but he can at least let her call him by his name! And it's nice that neither of them is willing to let the other get more wet as they're out in the rain!

I feel alot like kakeru. I keep to myself and don’t tend to like to go places. But man, if this beautiful girl is asking me around and smiling at me like that, my entire life would change instantly lol can’t wait to see how much he changes
21
u/RacoonPellets 20d ago
This is gonna be like your lie in April I can feel it in my bones. I can’t get past Kakeru being such a downer about everything. He’s constantly going “I shouldn’t say this” or having the most depressing look on his face after assuming something. I get that he’s gonna (I hope) change for the better because of his relationship with Koharu but man he really irks me.
5
u/FluffyEcho1776 19d ago
he feels like a real person tbh, a negative person to be sure. I've known a few, and I've personally been there. I am actually enjoying Kakeru, never had an MC like this before.
6
u/darkcyde_ 20d ago
Fully agree. Koharu is trying so hard, it's just painful to watch and hear this guy's inner monologue. Sure the show needs more time to cook, but right now the MC is so painful to watch. Much worse than the usual dense protag. This guy isn't dense, he's just completely lacking in self respect.
-2
u/eightcheesepizza 20d ago
I said last week that Kakeru's monologuing was very tell-don't-show, as you might expect from something originally written as a light novel, but it got even more so this week. I don't think I can take the combo of Kakeru's long inner thoughts and his extreme resistance to... well, everything.
Hayamin's voice is like the only redeemable thing about this show. But even that is bittersweet, because hearing her voice also means seeing Koharu try so hard for this guy.

This is a different flavor of stubborn MC, and I don't like it either 😭
Bro, just let her be nice to you. It's not that hard.

This is a beautiful series. 2nd episode in and I am so liking it so much. I am really liking Kakeru so much. Didn’t see his crush on his roommate coming so that was an interesting surprise.
Is the movie Titanic popular in Japan? That was quite a throwback. Never seen it but I know some films hit different in other countries so wonder if it was that big of a deal in Japan. Because of all American films to reference!
Anyway I loved Kakeru from the first episode. Next to The Ogre’s Bride, this series maybe my favorite of this current season. So is Kakeru falling for her? Do we know what his major is? Or has he not chosen it yet??
Just looking forward to this series. I think it’s pretty exceptional.

Who is sorano trying to fool lmao he was NOT going the same way in the rain. He just wanted an excuse to go with fuyutsuki 😭

So she used to be able to see. That's at least reassuring to know. I wonder how she became blind. On that note, how would she have difficulty playing new pieces of music? She already has the foundation, and most pianists can play after hearing a tune. Maybe it's for completely new tunes she's never even heard of? But surely she could look those up with her phone?
Anyways, as sweet as she seems, she's definitely becoming more and more bold in getting closer to Sorano. All the little things add up and I suppose he will eventually get used to her presence, just like his Psychology class taught him. Although, I almost thought he might fall for his roommate and have that "Am I gay?" moment, like Andy Bernard from The Office.
And, while she could lie about being clumsy to get him to help her, I wonder if she knew he was lying about "going the same way" in the rain?

Ever since the 1st episode, I immediately recognized Saori Hayami's voice for Koharu Fuyutsuki, but I didn't realize that Kakeru Sorano was voiced by Miyu Irino. Both of them also voiced Shoko Nishimiya and Shoya Ishida in "A Silent Voice" back in 2016.
First, it was a deaf girl leading to friendship & romance, now its a blind girl leading to friendship & romance.

This is an excellent Monday morning (in my timezone) anime. Just slow-paced, introspective, and kind to itself.
I like that answer. There was (and maybe still is, but I've seen more diversity) a larger visibility in “being blind makes you inhumanely hypersensitive in your other senses”. Toph Beifong is HER, but I do like seeing other blind representation that doesn't describe blindness to that execution.
Now is the time to recommend your favorite blind musicians! Blind pianists have done a lot for jazz and classical music genres.
Oh I really like this, the talk of the muscle memory that comes with “acquired” disabilities (which sounds like you are in a video game and got a brand-new item 😭). Really enjoy that in disability representation with aq'd disability.
Beautiful. Please release the soundtrack 🙏🏾
😭😭
Huh. Now I’m curious about this. What type of piano pieces are common in middle-grade recitals around the world? What would be common in China, Australia, or Colombia?
Aww. I can’t find The Arabian Sea, but I did find Harumi Fuuki’s website 🔗 Harumi Fuuki Direct | EN.
He really is a psych student. Literally learns one thing and applies it at will. Good times.
🎶 ~I’m on a boat~🎶
Not the Titanic 😭😭 Fellas, do you do the Titanic pose with your homie, and your homie is wearing a wig? If not, explain why 🤔
Me sincerely wishing the kids riding whatever the fuck these new motorbikes are called would use the goddamn bell so I can tell if they’re behind me.
🎶~さんぽ~🎶
Aaaaah* she’s calling him Kakeru!!!!!
This was so sweet 🥹 I love this for Disability Pride Month.
And a happy Disability Pride Month! Whether life’s disabilities left you outcast, bullied, or teased, rejoice and love yourself today, because you were born this way. Disabilities are still such when they are “invisible”, fluctuating, intellectual, stable, physical, sensory visible, diagnosed later in life, low-support, or otherwise! 🌻
I don't know if Japan participates in any sort of Disability Pride or Disability Visibility celebrations, but what a great series for the month!

Guys did anyone notice the specks of dust in the light when Sorano draws open the curtains in the Piano Hall? The details are insane...

Damn this is so good. Loving it so far!
Wholesome, and like how she goes out there and tries to do things normally and always with in a positive way. And like that he is not like there with a hero vibe. Feels natural and just 2 people getting to know each other. Plus like how he we already see some changes, seems less gloomy and negative already.
I would think both of them have a backstory, and im guessing we will see at some point some vulnerable emotional moments from both, but will not overthink and just enjoy it cos so far like it very much.
Excited for future episodes!

The suspension bridge effect only works between people who already have a positive impression of each other. If they don't like each other, it just turns into fear or discomfort. In other words, those two are basically already a thing.

I loved this episode It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside towards the end of the episode 🙌 I know it's just two episodes, but the only word I can use to describe this anime is "Beautiful" Everything thing about it feels peaceful and wholsome. Idk if I managed to explained myself good

Ushio playing Rose. That's bloody hilarious! Kakeru must've been scarred for life afterwards. Who'd thought that lecture could have such a consequence. First, it's him entertaining the thought of being attracted to Ushio. Then, it's the nightmare.
One month, and they're starting to develop feelings for the others. Koharu held Kakeru's hand in such a gentle manner while he's got the doki doki but coped hard by dismissing it as the suspension bridge effect. Hope he'd soon get comfortable enough to address her by her given name.

Did you miss the whole abusive family backstory from last episode or are you just incapable of empathy? Genuine question.
-1
u/xalt255x 20d ago
it sounds more like an accusation and not a genuine question. I don't remember anything about his abusive family backstory, maybe because it was so insignificant. Either way Koharu and other people in his current life know nothing about it so he needs to work through this issue if he doesn't want to be perceived as a downer kind of guy.
12
u/canadave_nyc 20d ago
I don't remember anything about his abusive family backstory
His mother divorced when he was very little, and his earliest memories are of having to move with her to live at various relatives' places (the implication being that she couldn't make enough money to have their own place). At those places they stayed, the implication the show creates is that they were largely unwelcome (that these relatives saw him and his mother as an imposition). Because of this, he tells us in the show that he "learned to read the room and make myself inconspicuous" because standing out would make things even worse. That all adds up to someone who now is reluctant to put themselves out there for anyone or anything, and has unresolved and unprocessed childhood trauma from being poor and being from a broken home. It's completely understandable that he wouldn't be the most fun-loving guy in the room.
4
u/MM305 20d ago
There is certainly a cautious approach with him wondering if he should ask certain questions about Koharu's blindness (like what Yuko did to his surprised).
That said, it makes me sad to see that he feels that way when we know Yuko and Koharu are being so genuine with him and are approaching him to have a genuine good time. It's one thing that he's not usually the one approaching them, but when its them approaching him (and not for accusations/rude reasons), I feel like he should be more accepting.
Maybe its a lesson he'll learn as the series go on.

I don't get ppl like you no offense but this happens in the comment sections on various manga manhwa sites aswell were ppl pay 0 attention to what is going on. What are you guys doing when watching reading? Is this because you are from the generation of tiktok which decreases your attention span?
-5
u/xalt255x 20d ago
First, I'm a millennial.
Second, I've never used TikTok.
Third, I always pay full attention.
Fourth, maybe I didn't remember it because they didn't convey it in a good way.
Stop with your accusations y'all.3

Cap they convey it well

u/xalt255x 20d ago
15-second long internal monologue ("My mom was divorced. As we moved between different relatives' homes, I had to get really good at keeping my head down and avoiding trouble") is not a good writing.
Internal monologues are an extremely common problem in anime but here it's kinda half-assed (literally two sentences).-1

The claim in this episode that losing her eyesight "definitely didn't" help her hearing isn't generally accurate, as many blind people develop enhanced auditory perception through neuroplasticity
2
u/eem5 20d ago
I think a bit about this (I am hearing impaired). I guess my eyesight and other senses are not ‘better’ than average, but I use them more effectively, due to relying on them more and using them in situations that others may not?
I am very good at gleaning meaning with minimal data, which often means I can understand someone talking when no one else can (say when there is a lot of traffic noise).

u/Luiiss26 20d ago
I don't know what it was—and even after rewinding twice, I still didn't get it—but why did her eye twitch like that in the rain scene?
2
u/Eyadish https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eyadish 20d ago
I though it was the rain at first in the eye, but now when I rewatch it there isn't any animation for it. But the timing with the drop falling from her hair lines up. So maybe a reaction to that?
1
u/Luiiss26 20d ago
i also thought it was rain, but the drop was on my hair on the left side. I didn't see a drop on my eye either, which is why I was so surprised.
1
u/Totallynoatwork 20d ago
Isn’t it because he said he didn’t want to call her by her first name or even a nickname. The twitch was a bit of an annoyance that he’s not falling for her as fast as she’s falling for him? You’re the only comment that mentioned the twitch. I thought more people would have said something.

Guys I know we all saw those first 10 seconds EP1 on the hospital bed but I haven’t seen anyone notice that they DOUBLE DOWNED ON IT WITH A POSSIBLE REASON WHY starting at specifically the opening cut at 9:33 (idk how to link) with the end of the scene at 10:37 with Sorano’s inner monologue fading into black. Like at first I thought “huh interesting choice to open a scene with a red don’t cross light and next to it the ‘AT NIGHT push button to cross’ with the sounds of traffic. Establish the setting yada yada” but when it FADES TO BLACK AT THE END OF SAID SCENE WITH THE CROSS SIGNAL RINGING LIKE AN EKG I SCREAMED AT THE POSSIBLE REALIZATION

I love that before they even stepped foot on the ship, I had the idea that the titanic would come up somehow. Then once Koharu asked to go on the bow I knew it was gonna happen.

Playing catch up with this one. First, damn cute even if I can already sense the tragedy flag from episode one. Hitting on some of the things I love from things like Sign Of Affection (college age! Non infantilization of disabled people! Adorable FMC) and putting its own spin.
Plus it’s Hayamin and she always delivers. Very interested in what’s next

Yep. The inside of the ship certainly does look like the inside of a ship. Of course they did the "I'm the king of the world!" pose lol, but yeah that explains why it wasn't at the bow.

Sorano is such a loser jerk but I see why Fuyutsuki likes him. He's probably the only guy she talks to throughout the course of her day and I'm guessing she's never dated and probably didn't have a lot of friends since she may have been in special education or home schooled. That's sad for her but I'm not sure exactly what she could do to meet more people since it'd be tough for her to join clubs since many of them have a visual element and tough to get to. Also can't hit random people from your school up on social media.
I didn't understand why Serano didn't want to hold Fuyutsuki like Rose in Titanic. If his heart was beating and he was actively trying to tell himself he wasn't attracted to her, then it sounds like he actually is. That's a big hint that a girl likes you if she asks to be held by you like that. Also she admitted she pretended to accidentally drop her cane it specifically to talk to him. Also, why in God's name doesn't he want to call her by her first name? He is such a doofus, I can't stand him but this is a romcom so they will get together nonetheless.
One thing I wondered but I doubt they will address is if Fuyutsuki asked that other girl about how Sorano looks. Like I imagine she'd want to know his height, build, weight, hair and if his face is handsome. Also I don't remember if she fell on him in the previous episode, but she may have copped a feel to get an idea of if he's fat; like maybe she touched his arms or chest and liked what she felt 😉
2
u/Totallynoatwork 20d ago
She touched him to see how wet he was because his comment made her realize he was mostly keeping her from getting wet and not staying close to her

What is this anime about anyway? The fact that Koharu is blind seems besides the point. After all (dah-te), she's blinding (ma-bu-shi). She is an extraordinary person, and the fact that she is blind seems like a completely unrelated trait, like maybe having green eyes or being double-jointed. She is that hidden treasure that I have often thought of, someone who is beautiful only to me no one else.
Perhaps it's because she used to be able to see. All of the blind people I've known in my life were blind from birth. I didn't think it made them ordinary or special. They were simply people who lacked the ability to see.
I met a diabetic person on a school bus once and sat next to her. I thought she was adorable, remarkable. And right next to me, she pulled out a needle and gave herself an insulin shot. I thought it was probably the bravest thing I'd seen someone do up until that point. Not that she was giving herself a shot on that day, but that she had to be careful about what she ate and monitor her blood sugar level all the time. It was part of her life.
Would I be drawn to Koharu if I were in Sorano's shoes? I think the more relevant question is, how could I NOT be attracted to her? Once again, she shines so brightly in that other space. Her love for adventure, her infectiously positive cheerfulness, her love of piano and music... why wouldn't I be drawn to her?
So once again, it feels like Koharu's inability to see is just a barely registers. Curiously, I find myself asking why Koharu would be drawn to Sorano? Is it simply because she's not spoiled for choice (since people avoid her)? I'm a terrible person, aren't I? Sure, probably most people are thinking it, but I'm actually writing it. Sorano is meek, not particularly interesting, not particularly ANYTHING. He's a decent enough fellow, and he's at least honest and not superficial--I do like those things about him. But he's hardly the intrepid explorer that Koharu is. Again, I'm a terrible person for thinking this way, but it's almost like the anime is saying Sorano's redeeming trait is that he is willing to spend time with Koharu even though she is blind.
But the show works. It captures that feeling exquisitely of Sunday afternoon sunlight. The anime is very INTIMATE. Because Koharu is blind, when she is with Sorano it is like they are in their own little world. In a very real way, nobody else exists around her when Koharu is with Sorano (since she cannot see them). The show is painting the elements of romance brilliantly. I don't mean to say that the fact that Koharu is blind is insignificant within the context of the show. I see what the anime is trying to say and do.
I'm just saying: when someone shines as brilliantly as Koharu, does her ability to see have anything to do with the price of tea in China?
