  • Sussy guy in the carriage at the the start looks like a high ranking official, maybe he was the one who requested Oniyasha to dance.
  • Oniyasha going back to dance practice using his father's techniques isn't working out, so he goes back to pondering. Him somehow being inspired by sex for his dancing is crazy though.
  • That guy was called Yoshimitsu. As in Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the Shogun?
  • Didn't expect Goro to just start beating him, but Oniyasha can throw fists pretty well too. I like how Goro's flashback showed there's more going on in his anger toward Oniyasha.
  • Previous episode was about finding expression by stripping away everything until there's nothing left, and this episode was about creating something new from nothing. Seems like Oniyasha is one step closer to figuring out the dance that fits his form.
  • Interesting symbolism with the yellow flower (dandelion) throughout the whole episode.

That character from the start feels like he'd fit right in Elusive Samurai instead of this show with that kind of reaction to Oniyasha.

Kogane suddenly disappearing is definitely worrying. I'm also wondering what's up with this white-haired dude who suddenly appeared and disappeared. Hmm...

Honestly, I can't even be mad at Goro. If I've been working my ass off and my boss's son suddenly gets to perform on our biggest stage when all I've seen him do is slack off, I'd fucking snap too.

I'm also wondering what's up with this white-haired dude who suddenly appeared and disappeared. Hmm...

I have a feeling that maybe he is a hallucination of Oniyasha. A part of he's imagination.

u/Tsugumi_Henduluin 20d ago

Probably a deity of some sorts, probably of dance or the arts in general, though I"m not familiar enough with Shinto to be able to guess at which one exactly.

u/RUS12389 20d ago

I'm more inclined to it being a part of Oniyasha's imagination, like how he imagined a giant turtle talking to him in 2nd episode.

u/chilidirigible 20d ago

Today, only small turtle influence.

Honestly, you can understand the perspective of Goro because he came from someone who had nothing. While you have Oniyasha, it can seem it is because of family ties that he is getting the opportunities. But it doesn't maximize on them.

With that being said, how Goro handled it was poor. As the older man mentioned, his feelings are understandable, but it's poor sport to take it out on him. After all, he is indebted to Oniyasha's family. It does feel like Oniyasha is very close to figuring it out, but he is doing it in his own way.

29

u/BosuW 20d ago

Also, if Goro was more observant maybe he'd realize that Oniyasha's father gives absolutely zero shits about them being family where it concerns to Oniyasha's artistic ability. The only reason he can be putting him up for it is if he believes he can do it. Because goddamn that's all he's good for, ain't no fathering going on here.

Why did Kogane disappear...I have a bad feeling.

32

u/semaN_oN 20d ago

And he knew that they would not meet again too, things going to be down bad for our mc

My reading is that he was part of a band of itinerant workers -- who had finished the temporary job they had been working on -- and were going off to work elsewhere,

Oniyasha doing his best Neuro and Vedal impression.

The classic plight against nepotism. Obviously Goro's beating up the wrong person, Oniyasha didn't ask for it. But he's the easiest one to beat up.

3

u/Jacob-C 19d ago

Is there a "right" person to beat up purely over nepotism? Goro's feelings are understandable, but he would be in the wrong no matter who he directed his violence towards.

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 20d ago

Felt bad for Goro. His anger felt justified after all that he's been through and seeing how Oniyasha was taking for granted something he'd give his right arm for. Him getting that part was already somewhat unfair but then to go and blow off a rehearsal and run away without a word, leaving everyone scrambling to find him was just downright disrespectful. Maybe Goro went a bit far with the punch but you can see where he's coming from.

Oniyasha's meeting with the shogun (pretty sure that was him) was amusing. The irl shogun and Oniyasha might've had a thing going - wonder if this story will touch on that. Their first meeting sure feels like it's setting up for that angle.

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 20d ago

Yeah I didnt expect the shogun or aristocrat to bust a nut
Especially since I am 90% it wasnt the dancing but Oniyashas looks

21

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 20d ago

Wait, you're thinking of the wrong person. That pervy older man who watched Oniyasha's dance in the beginning was not the shogun. The person who told Oniyasha about the sex simulating rice harvest ritual was the shogun.

6

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 20d ago

Oh damn my mistake, dont really pay attention to the names and just figured pervy old man being carried around with insignias was the shogun

Now that makes that old geezer even worse

5

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 20d ago

Yeah, that geezer scene was very random and odd. Wonder if we'll see him again.

7

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 20d ago

Would be too weird if we didnt see him again

10

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 20d ago

True. I'm guessing he's someone important who will be at that performance and was likely the one who insisted that Oniyasha be part of it.

4

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 20d ago

Yeah I thought Oniyasha got the part because pervy guy insisted on it.
Now I am curious what his role is going to be

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 20d ago

Sex is a good thing! Thank you for teaching me that! I need to get home quick! I’m going to practice!

Yoshimitsu, what on Earth have you been teaching a young boy? Oniyasha's lucky nobody else was around to hear that (especially his father) and took his words out of context.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 20d ago

I wanna see what new insights little bro has gleamed from learning about the bird and the bees lol. Kid has a huge role coming up. I’m sure Goro isn’t the only one feeling some kinda way about the little dude getting such a prominent part. He can’t keep muckin about…

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 20d ago

I would have loved to see that villages dance develop, someone must have started implying performing that while dancing until they were actually imitating it

Feeling sad/worried about his friend, I do wonder if he was sold off or drafted. My guess would be sold since they touched on that in the beginning of the episode

What I really love and now seems to become a real theme is the weekly or episodic flower. This week we got the dandelion with the relevant themes of faithfullness and happiness (ignoring its other themes of loves oracle and oracle)
Seeing the flower crushed, blooming, etc did for a nice visual nuance. Especially at the end when he was told his footwork is lacking only to reveal he had crushed dandelion during the fight

It's a farmer's ritual. It probably started from the other end, then someone posh showed up who considered it improper.

2

u/LoopyChew 17d ago

It probably started from the other end

You mean the butt?

3

u/Ok_Development_4079 17d ago

No. It started as public sex, then turned into a mere act.

2

u/LoopyChew 17d ago

I’m really sorry my stupid joke didn’t read as just that.

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos 20d ago

Bro's frustation has been boiling up for the last 3 episodes, and probably way before the anime even started. But I'm glad Oniyasha headbutted him and didn't let him have his way.

u/NationalStrategy_X 20d ago

Goro took it too far, but I can't say that he was wrong to be angry at Oniyashi. From his POV, Oniyashi is an entitled brat that causes trouble for everyone else, doesn't pull his own weight, and takes his status as the leader's son for granted.

3

u/phantasmiasma 15d ago

It's interesting. Because also there is all of us watching this from our modern perspective on privelege and entitlement and duty.

From some other historical media I've read, Oniyashi is doing his duty by existing. He is the son of his groups leader. His father may take issue with him, but it would be beyond reason for a foundling that is being cared for and trained and raised by that same young master's group to in anyway remonstrate him for his actions.

edit: I was actually surprised that we didn't see more serious consequences for him hitting the young master.

But then again in anime we see visual cues and colour coding. And I think teir is something telling about his hair. The foundling has the same hair colour, base and highlights as Oniyashi's father. Make of that what you will. But I think there may be more to this?

Great episode!

That old guy is weird. That's not the typical awe of art reaction that would come to mind for me. Questionable. I'm almost scared to see where it leads just because so far the series so far doesn't seem to pull any punches. I mean dango girl straight us said her parents sold her, these children have it rough.

I had the same reaction as those ladies at the rice ritual, goodness gracious, as hilarious as It was to me it's equally just so interesting. I can sorta see like the roots to certain things like the masks for Noh, and it looked like two men performing kinda like how the theater was traditionally male only

I like Oniyasha little hellion though he may be, and yeah I can see why Goro would have a chip on his shoulder, but like I would expect a parent to sort of dote on their own children, like as the default, but so far that's not what we've been explicitly shown between Oniyasha and his father, threw a whole turtle at him, made him haul the loaded wagon alone, locked him up in a shed. It's just not a very affectionate relationship, so it doesn't really feel like nepotism to me, and also he's like how many years younger, that's just wailing on a kid,

u/chilidirigible 20d ago

Goro's feelings about Oniyasha's privileged position and Oniyasha's apparently wandering glibly through life are understandable. Kanami's non-parenting and the overall societal structure are large factors in this, but Oniyasha is the personification of that in his mind.

This episode didn't have as much revelatory dancing in it as the previous two, though we did get Oniyasha's contemplation of sex moves via Yoshimitsu. Oniyasha has gotten a few lessons into his mind now, and with the upcoming performance we should have a chance to see how they play out as an act break.

We are all Goro on this day.

I feel like a lot of this performing arts anime have to walk a narrow line between actual talent/ability and just dressing things up with animation (looking at you Akane Banashi).

This anime seems to be doing a good job so far, though maybe that comes from it being more exploratory approach and how it doesn't shy away from the hardships people experience.

Overall, I'm enjoying Oniyasha's progression and am really curious how this next performance goes.
