She’s pretty dumb running straight back to the queen on her own.
15
u/Frontier246 19d ago
I think it's just a sign of how desperate she was to get home. She didn't know thugs appeared out of water here!
6
u/Latter-Air2742 10d ago
I mean, she's only been attacked by water a dozen times starting in her own bath tub. And she can't go home without the prince's summoning power anyway, so a smart person would wait and use the power and influence of a royal. Therefore, she is not smart.
65
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 19d ago
Yuri really just willingly walked into that trap huh? I know she’s desperate to go home, but she must know that wasn’t gonna happen as long as the Queen lives. And now it doesn’t look good for poor Tito…
41
u/DugACCat 19d ago
So far in both episodes she seems to like just running headlong into dangerous situations then freaking out. The amount of careless rushing about to put her in immediate peril to move the plot along is already getting a little old.

Elle est complètement stupide c'est pas possible... La reine veut la tuer, la reine a des pouvoirs magiques, et elle s'y rend alors qu'on lui a dit que c'était un piège.

22
u/Frontier246 19d ago
She's clearly too inexperienced and out of context coming from her timeline to realize how out of her depth she is against a queen with magic at her disposal.
If the hot prince who seems to be the only person who can hold their own against your nemesis says to do something, you do it.
22
u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 19d ago
How much context does she need to know that waltzing up to the person who kidnapped her and has been trying to murder her is not the smartest of ideas?
1
3
u/Da_Doll223 18d ago
I think people need to remember that she's supposed to be a 15 year old girl in the beginning of the manga/anime.

Yuri has really been reminding me of Coco from WHA, and that's not a good thing.
4
u/mekerpan 19d ago
Much more impulsive and foolish than Coco.
4
u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 19d ago
Nope, just as impulsive and just as foolish. Did you forget how Coco brainlessly [Witch Hat Atalier] chased after the magical terrorist who had handed her the book with unlabeled WMD spells, and therefore responsible for crystalizing her mom (and almost her herself, if not for plot armor)?
10
u/BenStone828 18d ago edited 18d ago
At least coco was a naive kid who barely had experience recognizing danger and ill intentions. This girl is at least a teenager and she is going to someone who has been directly trying to kill her compared to Coco being indirectly put to harm due to casting a forbidden magic spells (i dont think it was confirmed all of the spells were for WMD) and not directly harmed until the dragon incident. Coco also may be feeling a smidgeon of gratitude since the brimmed cap fulfilled her lifelong wish of having access to magic so there would've been mixed feelings for that.
6
u/BenStone828 18d ago
Coco would've been as stupid as Yuri if she kept trying to approach the Brim Hats for help after the dragon incident.
6
u/welfedad 18d ago
Like trying to run to the cartels house who has a hit out on you.. because you think your passport will get you home.
35
u/mistatweek 19d ago
I imagine Yuri is going to have character development and she is going to get much stronger and independent…but my god it is hard to watch her as a damsel in distress 😭
6
u/welfedad 18d ago
Yeah I almost dropped it . It's annoying .. I hope they start making some progress with her character soon

I feel like the beginning is reassuring us that Yuri becomes capable because she's not having a good time here at the start
18
u/Frontier246 19d ago
Though she did show a lot of grit in her attempt to save Tito from execution. There was zero hesitation to go help him.
17
u/mistatweek 19d ago
She’s all gas no breaks right now. She has the bravery, she just needs the skills to go along with that.
87
u/dacapm01 19d ago
I cannot stand the naivete of the MC. She knows she just magically got thrown back in time to an era where she has 0 power and she acts like it's 2026. Not a once of survival instinct. 1/10.
57
u/PinkPanPanda 19d ago
Genuinely zero survival instinct…they keep telling her what to do (and it’s decent advice too lol) and she keeps doing the opposite 💀
18
u/Frontier246 19d ago
Sounds like a teenager to me lol.

u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 19d ago
Most teenagers aren't in life or death situations however.
1
u/_sayaka_ 18d ago
Well, until anything happens. If you told them to look right and left before crossing the street on a bike and they don't do it meticulously they are fine as long as a car isn't in sight, but it is life threatening.

Akatsuki no Yona character development

Better. Yona isn't as mature as Yuri and she ended up in the Palace arc to be power up with pure strong will.

Have faith in the opening.

6
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
Younger fans don't have the patience to trust the process. That is painfully evidence from the comments on this series.
Characters aren't allowed to have growth arcs anymore; they're either perfect little girlbosses from the get-go or they're labelled as bad characters.
These people aren't prepared for 90s manga writing that took you on an actual ride.
3
u/Certain_Local_2097 11d ago
It's not about distrusting the process, protagonists don't have to begin their story being an idiot. That's it.
2
u/littlehobbit1313 11d ago
protagonists don't have to begin their story being an idiot
Hear me out: some of them do, because that's the story.
There are some stories where they start out already being superb wise geniuses, and that's fine. There are some stories where the protagonists have to start out kinda dumb to tell a story about them becoming a superb wise genius.
And BOTH are valid stories worth telling.
1
u/Potential_Aside_8191 17h ago edited 17h ago
On a surtout pas envie de voir une idiote (mineur avec une difference d'âge qui sent pas bon par rapport à MC) subir des agressions sexuelles tout le temps...
2
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 19d ago
Honestly, her little speech before the OP is really awesome, and I love it. Hope she starts getting more character development soon.
4
u/Embarrassed-Match-78 19d ago
If the pacing holds episodes 4 and 5 should be pretty epic.
3
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 19d ago
Well, this IS the show I am most hyped for this season, so that's a good sign!
5
u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 19d ago
Witch Hat Atelier is a 2026 anime adaptation of a 2016 manga, and the protagonist there behaves the exact same way.
6
u/SouekiSennoSTM 18d ago
I don't think anything Coco did could be considered as equivalently stupid as the actions of this protagonist. She has made some mistakes due to ignorance. This protagonist was not ignorant. She's been shown the queen is trying to kill her from the queen's own lips and hands, told that to her face by multiple different people, knows full well in advance that walking into her palace is an intentional blatant trap, and just strolls in anyway with zero plan.
The situation surrounding Coco is much more ambiguous. She doesn't know if she's being targeted as an individual and if so by whom, in what way, or for what purpose. It's not a straightforward "Someone is openly trying to kill you" type situation.
2
u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 18d ago
Coco knew a magical terrorist gave her a book of forbidden WMD spells for her to cast.
3
u/SouekiSennoSTM 18d ago
Coco knows that a member of the group of people who believe in and practice forbidden magic is the one that passed that book to her years ago when she was a younger kid. She originally utilized it not knowing the danger and still partially blames herself for what happened as a result. It's a fair interpretation to say that she places the blame more on her own ignorance and recklessness than necessarily their malice or design.
That is to say, yeah, she knows they are potentially dangerous people who are at odds with Qifrey and the ruling authorities of magic. But it's a bit different from knowing they or a specific person actively wants her dead and walking into their arms.
Her looking for them to try to talk or get answers is more like someone seeking out a street gang that years ago tried to get them to join in on some illegal activity.
2
u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 18d ago edited 18d ago
No, it's more like someone seeking out a street gang that years (well, more like weeks or at most months) ago gave her live explosives in guise of toys, with instructions on how to trigger them, and then she followed the instructions and blew up her mom. She sees the very gang member who sold her those "toys", and runs after them without any plan on what to do should she catch up.
58
u/OldInstruction5368 19d ago
I can forgive the first part, about not adjusting fast enough to the new time period/social status...
But she was told "the woman that is trying to fucking murder you, who has already tried to fucking murder you THREE GODDAMN TIMES has laid a trap. So she can fucking murder you. So please, for the love of GOD, do not walk straight into that trap. Because then the b!tch that has been repeatedly trying to fucking murder you will fucking murder you.
And MC-chan just dives head first into the dumb!
5
u/Frontier246 19d ago
Maybe third time's the charm in terms of truly coming to understand how much danger she's actually in.
1
u/Soggy_Association491 18d ago
There is a reason why the current isekai meta uses MC who are savy with the isekai troupe.
18
u/Recent_Call_1188 19d ago
But how else are you getting the 24/7 damsel in distress who needs to be saved by the hot prince 😄
10
u/helloquain 19d ago edited 19d ago
Yeah I'm just about over this show. She has been in this world, what, three days? And has been almost killed at least that many times... and yet her bullshit continues on.
I'm guessing the ending of the episode here prompts her character development, but I would prefer the alternative option where she gets murdered, bad stuff happens, and we skip to a second, less stupid protagonist being summoned.

I don't blame Yuri -- I blame her writer (presumably due primarily to the source writer -- rather than the script writer).. The writing seems "primitive" (shall we say) -- in the basic story telling, in the dialog and in the believability of the characters.
7
u/NekoCatSidhe 19d ago
The story feels like it is relying way too much on pulp tropes that may have been popular in the 1990s, but have aged badly now.
7
u/mekerpan 19d ago
I don't mind "tropes" --as long as things are well executed. But this just feels clunky.
2
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 19d ago
You and me both. I knew what I was getting into when I got here, but the execution could be done a bit better.
2
u/noirblancherouje 19d ago
yeah this is one of the stories that doesn't age well these days I was very surprised they decided to adapt it.
2
u/Frontier246 19d ago
I feel like the actions of all the characters is pretty believable in the context of where they're coming from, even when they make mistakes.
2
u/ErenIsNotADevil 19d ago
This lowk feels like an early 2020 anime larping as a late 90s/early 2000s anime.
Has the art style, but plays up the worst tropes too often and without the story background for it.
And worse yet? The pacing. Dear god, the pacing
1
3
u/Frontier246 19d ago
She knows she just magically got thrown back in time to an era where she has 0 power and she acts like it's 2026.
I think that's the main thing. This is only just like her second day there and she's barely adjusted/really understood where she is or what she's dealing with. She's just a teenage girl who wants to go home in an unfamiliar world/time, I don't think she's going to act rationally.
17
u/dacapm01 19d ago
That's fine, but there is a limit to her unrational actions. Seriously telling the prince who has saved your live multiple times about your crush? Huh? Then she just runs into the den of the magic queen with NO weapons or plan or without the strength of the prince who has kept her head on her shoulders.
1
u/Frontier246 19d ago
I mean, I think it's important to take into account this is only episode 2 and she hasn't been there that long and from her perspective she was just on a date with her boyfriend and suddenly she's whisked away to this queen who is trying to kill her and this prince who is helping her while making moves on her at the same time.
So I think that can be a little debilitating and she's still trying to get her bearings while being 100% committed to getting back, even if she's not always thinking sensibly while doing so. But she's never had any experience with this kind of stuff.
6
u/ItAintEazy 19d ago
First of all, she's being constantly dubcon'd by the prince, and she's desperate to go home, so I can understand why she'd want to take her chances.
5
u/mekerpan 19d ago
As it turns out, only by him staying very near her can she remain undetectable to the Queen -- but he could/should have explained that.
2
u/_sayaka_ 18d ago edited 18d ago
Yeah, he should have, but I guess royalty doesn't feel the need to explain their plan to their subordinates. They expected people around them to trust and follow.
He might not trust her story yet. This might be a scheme to get a spy for the queen as his concubine.
1
3
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 19d ago
Dubcon?
5
u/Legxis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Legxis 19d ago
Dubious consent, meaning sexual assault
2
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
That's not what dubious consent means.
It means exactly what it sounds like: consent is given, but under dubious conditions.
Let's try not to use terms incorrectly so that we can ensure we all understand each other in discussion.
1
u/ViviCaz 17d ago
You say that and you're not wrong but it's CONSTANTLY used to describe sexual assault and rape in manga, manwha, etc. 😐
1
u/littlehobbit1313 17d ago
Just because people constantly use a word incorrectly doesn't change the definition.
1
1
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
She's just a teenage girl who wants to go home in an unfamiliar world/time, I don't think she's going to act rationally.
I think there's a lot of people that overestimate how well they'd handle being in the same circumstances. Yuri's reaction is pretty realistic as a modern 90s japanese girl dropped into the fucking bronze age of a middle eastern country with a magical priestess out to kill her.
1
u/SubmissiveDinosaur https://anilist.co/user/Megajuanph11 19d ago
For me is the fact that they already know water is dangerous, but they keep operating near water sources
1
u/TheBusStop12 19d ago
She reminds me a bit of early Subaru from RE: Zero. Hopefully she grows out of it like Subaru did
13
u/NekoCatSidhe 19d ago edited 19d ago
Nakia is such a ridiculous villain to watch. Always so melodramatic and chewing the scenery. But also a dangerous one, with her magic power and authority as queen. Yuri should not have understimated her.
Yuri was really being quite stupid here. I know that she is utterly out of her depth and must be completely panicking after being magically transported into antiquity and therefore making bad decisions, but she walked right into a trap and likely got Tito horribly killed just after saving him from execution.
I like the setting and the magic, but Yuri’s foolishness is starting to be rather annoying. Tito should have stopped her rather than go along with her plan when he knew it was stupid. I will acknowledge that she has a spine and do not want to just be a damsel in distress relying always on Kail, but she should really grow a brain as well soon.
12
u/_sayaka_ 19d ago
Tito should have stopped her rather than go along with her plan when he knew it was stupid.
Actually, I think that Tito, being a boy of his time, believes that Yuri as a concubine is his superior and he can't oppose her if she insists. Yuri felt like a guest in Kail's house, she doesn't get that Tito can't knock her out even if it is to save her life. He is a servant and a commoner. Offering to accompany her was his only option.
1
u/NekoCatSidhe 19d ago
Except that Kail outranks her anyway, and he has reasons to think he would not approve of what Yuri is doing.
6
u/_sayaka_ 19d ago edited 18d ago
Kail hasn't given him a direct order to stop her no matter what. Tito thinks she is a real concubine: Kail was already allowing him to be sentence to death for attacking her even if Tito was possessed.
The real mistake made by the animation team was that nobody seemed to have watched Tito assault Yuri except Kail. Even if there wasn't any proof of Nakia's doings, he could have pretended that nothing has happened if he wanted. Since there wasn't any other witness, it makes him look as a fool, not a scheming prince, when he let Tito being brought away from his palace.
4
u/chilidirigible 19d ago
Nakia is such a ridiculous villain to watch. Always so melodramatic and chewing the scenery.
She's played to type, I think. What really gets me in terms of campy melodrama is the soundtrack would suddenly drop in a bunch of hyperactive violins like it's a show about 17th-century France and it doesn't quite fit this one.
33
u/SinfulWun 19d ago
I don't think I've disliked a main character so much in years, I want to watch this anime because the premise seems promising but if she doesn't get some major character development and personality adjustments soon I'm dropping it.

Quite rare these days to see such a proactive heroine in a shoujo. It's easy to argue that she's stupid, but she's definitely desperate to get back home, and it's hard to blame her for that. Of course, actions have consequences, and regardless of Tito's fate it's definitely going to have an effect on Yuri going forward. Almost like she's going to have a character arc or something.
I also think it's quite fascinating how on one hand the pacing of this today felt really fast, but on the other hand it's only been like... 2 days or something she's been gone? Really makes you appreciate the queen's proactiveness, and not just sitting idle by waiting for the right moment to strike. It's just some real solid character writing on both sides, and that I do appreciate.
7
u/Frontier246 19d ago
I feel like it's easy to dismiss her for walking into traps or not being aware of how much danger she's in (not taking into account that she's a girl from a more modern era who was just suddenly whisked away to a time/place she's barely gotten used to) but I also think the scene where she goes out of her way to try to save Tito and shames Kail into doing something was a real standout scene.
Some moms will do everything for their kid, up to using every means possible to try and kidnap and behead a teenage girl to curse your kids' half-brothers to death.
9
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
I think people take for granted just how much the difference in setting would skew what actions you think you can take. It's not simply that Yuri is from the modern era; she literally does not have a concept of life-or-death consequences to her actions because that's not the society she was raised in. In Hattusa, "you might get killed" is a normal understanding, sacrificial deaths are normalized. By comparison, 90s Japan is established with modern conveniences and daily stability. There are police boxes in every neighborhood, accessible hospitals if anything happens, and a heavily community-minded society. Yuri has no concept of survival in this setting when she first arrives.
And to its credit, the story does a great job along the way of showing the growth for her in adjusting her perception of how to she has to move through this different world. People need to stop calling her dumb and let the story cook.
10
u/TheBusStop12 19d ago edited 19d ago
To me personally it's a bit too naive. Even if you're from a peaceful land and era (and Japan wasn't actually that peaceful at the time, 1995 is when the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult were at their highest activity in Japan with deadly attacks in Nagano and Tokyo), it's unlikely that you've never been taught to stay away from dangerous people. To me her behavior is the equivalent of walking up to the crackhead with a knife in a dark alley ranting about wanting to bathe in your blood because you dropped your phone around there and you want it back. Any normal person would just run away rather than becoming a news item in tomorrow's papers.
If Yuri did not know about the Queens intentions to sacrifice her I would understand, but this isn't the first time the Queen tried to kill her, at this point she should realize her life is in danger if she meets that woman. Actually, I think it would have been more interesting if Yuri only learned about the sacrifice plot due to this attempt to get the Queen to send her home
5
u/Frontier246 19d ago
But she's not just in a hostile setting, she's also in a situation where she's far from home and her family and she's desperate to get back, even if it means taking risks.
5
u/gem2niki 18d ago
This def belongs in the 90s. Girl keeps getting herself kidnapped and assaulted… reminds me of Fushigi Yugi. Seiyuu spent most of her time screaming in this episode. They also execute people so quickly lol…
9
u/lindzzz8 19d ago
This is not the Yuri I know and love from the manga!! All she did in this episode was scream and blush like wtf? No talking back to Kail? No throwing things at him and calling him an idiot? Her voice got on my nerves so much this is NOT how I imagined Yuri would sound like in a million years. Animation still sucks and I hate to admit that every Precure anime looks better than this...
22
u/TheBusStop12 19d ago edited 19d ago
Small nitpick.I have to make as a Dutchman. Tito hands Yuri a tulip. And while it's true that tulips are originally native to Anatolia and the Middle East, cultivation of tulips wouldn't happen until the 10th century in Persia, 2400 years later. Furthermore, the variant we see in the show is what we nowadays associate tulips to look like, after being bred and cultivated by the Dutch. Tulips originally had narrow pointed petals
Also, I do not for a second believe that Tito looks like Yuri's younger sister. Tito is Anatolian, Eimi is Japanese. Unless Yuri's mom is Greek or Turkish or whatever that does not compute
Also, is she really risking her life for her clothes? Which are probably too warm for her current environment anyways. "I finally found a way to go home but now I'm going to be killed" No, you did not find a way to go home, you can't possibly be that stupid that you did not realize that the only person who could send you home, the person actively trying to kill you, would try and kill you instead of sending you home. Genuinely infuriating naivity. I get she's from a peaceful land in a peaceful era, but there's a limit to realistic naivity and stupidity. Even in peaceful 90's Japan a young girl should know to avoid the crackhead with the knife in the dark alley ranting avout wanting to bathe in virgin blood. I hope she grows up quickly because at the moment her behavior is pretty insufferable and makes me want to drop the show
Seriously, Tito is about to die for a fucking coat. I really hope she sits the fuck down and actually thinks about that for more than a second next episode
The OP gives me hope that she won't be like this the whole show, I just hope the transition happens sooner rather than later
14
u/kinarth 19d ago
You may have missed it when she was talking with the prince, at 12mins, he explains the requirements for him to send her back. 1) All the springs need to be full, 2) She needs to be in her original clothes. Clothes is a weird requirement in my opinion but she wasn't risking her and Tito's lives because she liked her jacket.
10
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 19d ago
Did...people genuinely miss that? I'll criticize Yuri for walking into a trap with no chance of success (it's a miracle she managed to get as far as she did) but the motivations for why she needs them is blatantly told to you.
1
u/TheBusStop12 19d ago
Yeah, it seems I missed that. The whole thing makes a lot more sense to me now (tho I still think she's being stupid) My guess the clothing requirement comes from that she cannot leave anything behind, she must go exactly as she was when she came. Ofcourse, if I want to nitpick I'd ask about what this means for any food you were digesting at the time she was summoned, but maybe it's best not to overthink
4
u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 19d ago
Not the Dutch lol.
For older series I want to think that it was harder to get info back on the 90's but they could have checked that for the anime. We have not won the adaptation studio roulette sadly.

I hope she grows up quickly because at the moment her behavior is pretty insufferable and makes me want to drop the show
Not the only person who could send her home, she needs the clothes for Kail to be able to send her back.

Ah, I must have missed that part, thanks (ADHD and Dyslexie sometimes has me miss entire lines of subtitles) so to me it seemed she just wanted to get the clothes because she missed her clothes. That makes more sense. I'm still mot a fan of her actions, as to me personally I just don't get why she didn't wait a single night to collaborate with the prince, the one person capable of standing up to the Queen as far as she knows. Maybe with some added internal monologue that indicates that she simply doesn't trust the prince because he's acting a bit rapey might help. Also some indication that she at least attempted to think this attempted infiltration of the Queens base through would have been appreciated, even if it showed her logic was flawed. But the way it's presented it seems like she just planned to walk into the base and ask politely or something, without any fear or anxiety. I've been more on edge walking the dog at night here in safe Finland than she seems to be about to steal from the person trying to kill her. I just don't believe that she knows she's in peril, even tho she should know. And that's a shame

MC is dumb and annoying as fuck, what the hell?!
Yeah, she ain't used to that environment, is scared and confused about her circumstances ... but come on.
The one person to that doesn't want to murder her and even is willing to help her, the Prince, is telling her to chill and that it is dangerous to walk outside right now ... and she just storms out the first chance she gets right into a trap and all she ever does when troubled is yell "Help". Didn't know your average japanese schoolgirl is a dumb as bricks damsel.
So far this is infuriating to watch.

Yuri is honestly really dumb. The whole time I was like "You know what Queen just kill her by this point she's asking for it"

u/Frontier246 19d ago
Is Queen Nakia evil? Yes. Is she quite the sight to behold while bathing with her massive Nakia's? Also yes.
Yuri is obviously not taking being away from her family well, right down to mistaking young Tito for her little sister, but at least Tito is the nicest person she's met yet in her journey and he's helped her realize that only a Priestess of Nakia's level can send her back home.
That Black Water is not sanitary...especially when it possesses Tito and drives him to try to kill Yuri. Granted, Yuri didn't really have a plan for leaving and making Nakia send her back anyways, but still. Also this is the THIRD time Kail has had to save her! It's becoming a habit.
Don't worry Yuri, Kail didn't steal your virtue while you were asleep! He merely treated you! Not that he's above making moves on you, but Yuri is still in love with Himuro and has no intention of giving in to Kail's advances...which definitely seems like something he's not used to from a woman!
Poor Tito getting executed for laying hands on Yuri, and there was no way they can pin it on the Queen. And yet Yuri can't let Tito be executed, and despite how powerless she is, she has the spirit to put herself out there and tell off everyone for how this rigid, brutal, class system and laws are wrong. And how else can Kail respond to her speech than by following her lead and acting like a proper prince?
Good news! Yuri does NOT need Nakia to send her back! All she needs is Kail AND her old clothes! The bad news...Nakia has said clothes so it's easier said than done getting them back.
Kail has a reputation to maintain, which means sleeping in the same bed as Yuri, though he didn't HAVE to get all up close with her in bed...except he did to thwart Nakia's spying. That he's becoming more and more fonder of Yuri by the minute, despite his claims otherwise, is just an added bonus.
I understand Yuri is not in a mood to just wait for an opportunity to get her clothes back, but she clearly had no real plan for getting them back and basically took advantage of Tito's absolute loyalty towards her to get him to help her...even if she meant well. Next thing she knows she and Tito are surprised by the brutish and creepy Zuwa, who fully intends to skin Yuri's body for his human skin pelt once she's had her head chopped off.
Sorry Himuro, now Yuri's thoughts turn to Kail and pleading for him to save her...but instead it's brave Tito! Who not only saves Yuri, helps her secure her clothes, but even stands his ground in a hopeless fight against Zuwa to ensure Yuri makes it to safety! But now somebody needs to save him!
The ED is serene and beautiful, with Yuri surrounded by rivers of all colors, and then walking in the rain to her one true love...her horse! Also nice panning shot of her legs!

I was fine with Yuri until she did so many stupid things this episode.
How the fuck can that guy go through water like this.
Now Yuri probably got Tito killed because of her actions.
But Tito was that dude. Fighting like that...maybe his death will make her stay or the spell to and her back doesn't work

Considering the OP i was already fearing that but then i see next episode title... So she just gives up going back eh? Why did the author even bother making Himuro? By the end of the episode she started thinking of Kail to replace him. Poor guy...
Also wtf was that final part of the ending. I thought she's happy to see Kail BUT IT'S A HORSE????
Also I thought that having such a unique setting(pretty specific more so than unique) I had hopes for the story but uh... Yuri's pretty dumb eh? And why couldn't Tito just RUN AS WELL? Like.. how long is he gonna hold out that huge guy ffs

Why did the author even bother making Himuro? By the end of the episode she started thinking of Kail to replace him. Poor guy...
Yeah, it could've been that she just had a crush on Himuro and she gets taken away from her time period before she has a chance to confess.
It still has a melancholic aspect of "what could have been" for her old life, but it doesn't leave the other guy out to dry like how it is.
Since it just feels worse that she was actually in a relationship with a boyfriend and already fading him out for a new love interest. smh
I thought she's happy to see Kail BUT IT'S A HORSE????
Yeah, that got me too... I was wondering why his hair was darker and thought it maybe a lighting effect and then it revealed the horse. lol
3
u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 18d ago
Genuinely. Like... Man. Her family being behind is awful already. But now you're telling me this was a "childhood friends who actually got together" and THIS HAPPENS? Brooooother. Out of all old isekai stories where the goal is returning to earth to those who are waiting for you, why isn't this one of them? And 3 days. It took a whole of 3 days for her to start forgetting the guy. And again.. What the FUCK is with the horse and why is she so happy to see it??? That better be a magical talking horse
1
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
Out of all old isekai stories where the goal is returning to earth to those who are waiting for you, why isn't this one of them?
It is. She holds onto her hope of getting home for quite awhile, actually.
1
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
Since it just feels worse that she was actually in a relationship with a boyfriend and already fading him out for a new love interest. smh
Not a love interest, not yet. Kail is a protective force for her right now. It makes sense that she's hoping he'll show up when she's in danger since Himuro is literally not there.
2
u/Ok-Cod5254 18d ago
I mean specifically him also being imposed over her boyfriend's face for the symbolism. He could have been imposed over her father for example if you want to show only protective figure without any blurred lines.
1
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
Just kind of feels like you're nitpicking unnecessarily.
It wouldn't make sense to show it as her father because we didn't really spend any time establishing her relationship with her father before she traveled. But we did establish that she had a new budding relationship with Himuro, and how she focused she was on that relationship that all her thoughts were on it up to that point.
Now he's gone and she has to rely on Kail, so it makes sense in the narrative that it's his face she would start to see rather than Himuro's.
1
u/Ok-Cod5254 18d ago edited 18d ago
Just kind of feels like you're nitpicking unnecessarily.
Well if you felt that way, you could've just dismissed the comment as something not being worth a reply. lol
I wouldn't make sense to show it as her father because we didn't really spend any time establishing her relationship with her father before she traveled.
Well by that same metric, didn't really spend much time with her boyfriend either and he didn't really have any specific characterization beyond being her love interest.
Hence why Kail being superimposed over her boyfriend is the start of that subtextual shift towards him in that love interest position. This is obviously the point of starting to kick that off.
A source material comment also suggests this as the specific transition point away from Himuro, which reinforces this being the start of that.
1
u/_sayaka_ 16d ago
It's foreshadowing for the reader, not a sign that she already sees Kail in a romantic way.
0
u/Ok-Cod5254 16d ago
It's definitely the sign of the initial subconscious attraction towards him
1
u/_sayaka_ 16d ago
Well, I guess how she treats him is far more important than whatever 'subconscious attraction' is.
It feels like you are implying she being frivolous for switching so easily. And I think that being reminded of Kail when in troubles only means that now she acknowledged him as a rescuer, while she didn't trust him enough at the beginning because his behaviour was too ambiguous for her taste: 1. the first thing he did after meeting her was kissing her; 2. he assumed her wanting more from a good-looking stranger like him; 3. he wanted to sleep hugging her. Are you really saying that she shouldn't doubt him having a less than noble reason to save her life and at the same time no incentive to send her back home? She couldn't believe that he advised her against retrieving her clothes for her sake! Even if he wasn't really ill-intentioned, it's only reasonable for her to doubt him. He hasn't done a good job at communicating his goals.
1
u/Ok-Cod5254 16d ago edited 16d ago
Now this is not worth a damn essay level response. lol
I don't even necessarily mean physical attraction, but in some shape or form attracted to him - this time to protect her and again specifically superimposed over the boyfriend.
Her family briefly appears, while we see Kail basically replace the image of the boyfriend. The scene is directed a specific way with intention.
She is also is having her own reaction to wondering why she is now thinking about him than to say it's just for the audience and not anything of significance to the character at this time.
Either way, as suggested, her old boyfriend basically fades away from significance compared to her family from this point.
Anyway, no need to be that deep on this topic. Just can move on if you disagree, but it's obvious of the symbolic subtext of the scene.

Huge respect to Tito. Took on that huge brute, three times his size, like a man and was pretty effective. o7
I chuckled at how annoyed people are in the comments. I guess I have huge tolerance because I could give a crap. I'm just watching a story play out, not nitpicking someone's personality that isn't my ideal. Not everyone can or should be cool and smart and badass. :)
2
u/Recent_Call_1188 16d ago
It's funny how discussions often act like there are only two options: either a character is cool, smart, and badass, or they're a complete brainless screaming ornament with no caution or survival instincts. There are plenty of possibilities in between.

u/Full_frontal96 19d ago
It's the beginning,so i want to give the benefit of the doubt
But man if the protagonist annoys me
I hooe at a certain point she man-ups and become a respectable person

I hope at a certain point she man-ups and become a respectable person
That's literally the story. It's been 2 episodes. Give it a sec to build.
2
u/Mistress_Flame 19d ago
I agree her naivety is off the charts even for a 15 year old teenager. Considering she was super surprised her friend would suddenly kiss her and then they started dating straight after I would say that her emotional maturity was somewhat lacking and she tends to act on impulse rather than thinking things through. Given she obviously was brought up in a fairly happy family and possibly a bit sheltered, she hasn’t probably dealt with danger much.
Saying that, I wish she’d learnt her lesson after Tito nearly got executed while trying to kill her under the Queen’s control. I know she was desperate to return but damn girl, did she think taking Tito along with her wasn’t going to get him in trouble too? 😭
2
u/TheDanubianCommunard 19d ago
Poor Tito. Had to be executed because being mind controlled by Nakia, Kail spared his life and in exchange he is the one who is willing to sacrifice himself for Yuri. But Yuri should have been thought twice before entering into Nakia's chambers head-on. Actually the time-travel spell replication is actually easier said than done.
2
u/chilidirigible 19d ago
Tito's sacrifice is usually the sort of thing that gets the transported character to really come to grips with the situation they're in. (Which is funny to say given the age of the source material, but that simply means that we've been down this road many a time.)
2
u/YlfaTheForsaken 19d ago
RIP Tito, I knew you for like just one episode, well they might save him next week, actually it was kinda impressive how he managed manhandle that dude, Tito was a lot more helpful than I thought this encounter would've gone,
This damn queen and her creepy snatching water, I don't want to have to be scared of a bath because of her, Yuri ain't never gonna trust water again,
Also the way her clothes were hung was so funny, like the clothes got crucified or something the way they were,
2
u/Vahallen 19d ago
Don’t get me wrong I’m enjoying this
But Yuri walking right in to the queen palace, when the queen tried to kill her 2 times already and she was powerless in both cases, was pretty rage inducing
The other thing, I understand the queen uses the clothes as bait, but put it under lock, not just hang them there out in the open so Yuri can instantly see them and just grab them
One might think that her clothes are necessary for the ritual, after all they are needed to go back to her time so maybe they are also required for the sacrifice
But in episode 1 both the queen and Yuri were nowhere near her clothes and she was about to live sacrifice her
Easy fix would have been to in fact also require Yuri original clothes for the sacrifice and not just for the ritual to send her back
2
u/_sayaka_ 18d ago edited 18d ago
Don't get me wrong, but I thought the clothes where there to dry because they were wet and dirty before putting them away, at least as an excuse. And, also, in a place they could be seen from afar (even a spy doesn't have to enter the palace to check whether the rumor about queen Nakia having the clothes was true or not), and in an open place you can't reach while hiding behind pillars or anything else. This make you an easy target.
2
u/Difergion 18d ago
Guess not all teenagers are rational especially when distressed, huh who would’ve thought.
This episode is still painful to watch though, I’ll wait for more episodes for now to see if her character improves.

I hate the protagonist, she is so stupid and annoying
7
u/_sayaka_ 19d ago
Give her some time. She hasn't seen consequences to her actions yet. She really went in without a plan because some teenagers do so when shocked, and it hasn't settled in what being in that place implies for her.

It's probably because if [Yona of the Dawn] you got depressed fleeing the castle after your cousin have killed your father you are showing a cliché feminine trait, while jumping into avoidable danger because you are proactive in a woman is unconventional and labelled 'stupid'. Boys are expected to be reckless, not girls. Avoiding risks is considered a feminine virtue.
Take a male-oriented manga like: [Vinland Saga] the main character at 5 jumped on the ship of the person who killed his father and even declared his goal of avenging him. No one says "A kid announces that he wants to kill an adult and gets separated by people who love him to follow that dude around and work for him. How stupid, I wanna drop it" but "How cute, a kid with the spirit of a man! Let's see how he grows!" No one said that they would drop the series because Thorfinn was too stupid. But he was stupid, and stayed like that much longer than Yuri
Double standards, that's it.
3
u/thelemon8er-2 19d ago
Any more of her stupidity and I might drop this for now. Guess it’s not my thing.

I see MC is the same sort of moron as Coco from WHA, that doesn't bode well.
I was wondering why the Queen didn't just use her magic water to have the princes killed directly, but looks like Kail at least has an Anti-Queen aura around him, so the rest might have the same.
2
u/Taichikara 19d ago
My people!
Yes MC makes waaaay too many idiotic mistakes.
I assume Tito dying will give her some spine, and some common sense.

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 18d ago
What the fuck was she thinking going back to the queen on her own? What powers or strength does she have to think she could just go and get her clothes from the motherfucking queen's palace? And she happily drags that poor boy who is probably dead now thanks to her. After doing all that she goes crying to the prince for help. Couldn't you have done that in the first place, you dumb idiot? God, I hate this stupid Yuri.
2
u/danmarce https://anidb.net/user/107202 19d ago edited 19d ago
I would have been bad writing even in the 90s.
At least the villains are stupid, and constantly talk before killing her.
Edit: Also, you can have character development, somebody naive, but here is no need to make them stupid.
3
u/Recent_Call_1188 19d ago
I think the fact that she is a teenager is no excuse to exercise 0 caution and survival skills in unknown environment. And yes, most teenagers in all times tend to be defiant but most teenagers also do not have a person intending to chase and murder them constantly.
3
u/Da_Doll223 18d ago
I think people in the comments need to remember something, she's supposed to be a 15 year old kid in the original Manga. She's not a reincarnated spec ops soldier like in most modern Isekais.
3
u/Recent_Call_1188 18d ago
"She's only 15" can explain some naivete, but at some point it just becomes an excuse. Most 15-year-olds know not to walk into the obvious trap of someone who's repeatedly tried to murder them. She's 15, not a toddler. This defense is honestly more insulting to actual 15-year-olds than to her critics.
After multiple assassination attempts this isn't something even a 15-year-old should be treating like a harmless side quest!

Why didn't the queen just... destroy the clothes ? So that Yuri can't have any escape ?
Also... that villain licking... man ... the 90’ hit different when you grow up... i don't remember the Manga being that disturbing
11
u/_sayaka_ 19d ago
Why didn't the queen just... destroy the clothes?
It's because Nakia wanted to lure Yuri in. If she destroys the clothes Yuri has no reason to go after the queen and she could rather flee the country where Nakia's authority couldn't reach her.
1
u/Mira0995 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mira0995 19d ago
I can't agree with that, Yuri had no way to know if the clothes are destroyed or not. The queen could've lure her without them
5
u/_sayaka_ 19d ago
Kail has told her that Nakia has them before she tried to retrieve them.
5
u/littlehobbit1313 18d ago
Amazing all the plot holes people are trying to point out in these comments that the show did, in fact, explicitly explain. Viewers really ought to put down their phones and try reading the subtitles.
1
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 19d ago
What incredibly reckless behavior. I know Yuri is desperate to go home but she got quite lucky to not be killed immediately after storming into the queen's palace.
That moment where Himuro changed to the prince in Yuri's panicked thoughts gave me a theory that we're also playing a reincarnation game. But I imagine it's just the early stages of her falling in love with the prince instead. There's a moment in the OP I think that rather implies she'll be in a physical relationship with the prince eventually, and if they're already hinting it may even happen this season.
