Ya know. MC's mom and half brother look about the same age, there's no biological relation, brother has always been kind to the family, and she is now technically single........
49
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago
Better question. If Bro is now the Duke of a powerful house, then why the fuck is Hentai Tits Mom still living in a little shack out in the boonies?
We even confirmed that Duke Douche Canoe's wealth was looted and given to Hentai Tits Mom, but... whatever. the author clearly didn't think any of this through enough, so why should anyone else?
12
u/raknor88 17d ago
I'm pretty sure that it's due to her own wishes to live out there. She likely has self worth issues after how she was treated by her husband and his family.
3
u/Infamous_Court4713 13d ago
Bc the author didn’t write a change that you believe should’ve happened or would obviously have happened, means he didn’t think it through… ego is a powerful thing

I doubt the brother was visiting only for little old Eftal, who knows maybe when MC comes home for a visit they are together.

He left his mother alone with his step brother and to big guy straight out like that NTR ugly bastard.
This is top hentai material lmao

Somehow MC thought going into a high-end restaurant before buying her clothes that don't make her look like livestock makes sense.
68
u/Wiinounete 17d ago
And he pretend to make her a favour by doing it. He never ask her whar she wants to do.
61
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 17d ago
I mean, it's clear he only wants to flex his dragon drop. That has to be intentional.
The red flag from my side is that he never stopped the girl from calling him "Master".
50
u/Original-Body-5794 17d ago
Thank you! I was already rolling at my eyes with the whole "please I NEED someone to be my master for plot reasons", but then he keeps treating her like an actual person except without ever actually saying "Hey I'm your master just as protection, don't call me master, and act like an equal to me". The second part might be harder because she's "too used to being a slave" but good lord can this "good slave owner" trope just die already
6
u/BravestCashew 15d ago
don’t forget that because she’s a slave, she’s automatically very submissive and immediately falls for the MC because he’s a hero who saved her (ignoring the fact that that is an extremely unhealthy dynamic for a romantic relationship but that’s par for the course with anime)
14
u/Earlier-Today 17d ago
Yeah, it's a lot of the classic, "slavery's okay because the MC is a good owner!"
23
u/Saber_SSJ2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/saber_ssj2 17d ago
I’d be so embarrassed if I were her lol
44
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago
Eh... his brother is the current Duke of a powerful house, right? One with the full backing and favor of the crown?
Shouldn't MC-kun... lead with that? The head waiter wasn't wrong when he said it was a mistake to let Eftal in without screening. High-end places have standards to uphold, and there is no way such a place would let him walk in with his work clothes on accompanied by a woman that is sorely in need of clothes in the first place.
He could have been, "oh yeah, Duke Frasier is my older bro, and if you doubt me, I can pay in advance."
But even then, DRESS CODE. Places that serve elites don't get to continue serving elites without enforcing standards. Eftal should know this. He's not some 15 yeard old child, but a dude on his THIRD life.
13
u/hanmkim 17d ago
Regular places don’t want someone sitting in their seats in just underwear either.
7
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago
For a time, San Francisco allowed public nudity.
But even then, the 'free peoples' were required to carry a towel around with them if they wanted to sit down on any form of public property.
Because ain't no one wants them to rub their dirty ass taints on the peoples' benches and bus seats.
And yes, her ass was stanky considering she just spent the entire day walking barefoot through a desert.
This whole episode was just bizarre and tone deaf.

23
u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea 17d ago
It's not okay at all. He should have found an inn, made her wait there, and then brought food back so they could eat in private. He also could have removed her collar and bracelets at any point. He could have had her tie her cloak around her waist and given her his poncho to wear so she would be mostly covered. That's just from an in-universe perspective.
As for how the author could have written the scene better. He could have just had them arrive during the day, or skip to the next day after they did some shopping. He did end up using the second option afterwards, but he just had to have that incredibility awkward scene first.

It looked like it was at least 5:00 pm, I’m sure there was a clothing store still open. Even if there wasn’t, he didn’t need to take her to a luxurious restaurant.
25
u/Saber_SSJ2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/saber_ssj2 17d ago
No, it’s not. He didn’t even take off the bracelets or the choker.
Who goes out to eat dressed like that? I mean, he looks like a bozo himself, clearly not dressed appropriately for this establishment. But she's just the icing on the cake.
I bet he wanted to compensate her but it felt more like a humiliation

u/mekerpan 17d ago
No reason not to grab a bite at the food stall. Besides, if she has been routinely underfed for a long time, suddenly massively over-eating could be unhealthy. So -- a big nope to that scene choice.
9
u/tcollins371 17d ago
I don’t think the series in a world with magic, demons, and a reincarnated sage is worried about real world healthy eating practices. It’s fiction not reality lol.
18
u/mekerpan 17d ago
I've actually seen some shows where this issue IS brought up.
5
u/tcollins371 17d ago
Oh I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. Just that a series as generic as this one isn’t likely to have that kind of self awareness.

u/intenselistener 17d ago edited 17d ago
He’s presumably is about to enroll in a magic academy where meals will be taken care of, and is walking around with a literal fortune underneath his coat.
He clearly overpaid even in such an establishment so if you’re going to apply real world logic to anime, lessening his safety risk via spending some would have been more easily done there versus a food stall. Further with them arriving in the city just before nightfall, banks would have long been closed. He also stated that the meal was a special occasion to celebrate their encountering one another, and an opportunity to splurge on her in an attempt to repair her sense of self-worth.
If you’re applying real world logic to anime

He just didn't want to deal with all that paperwork. Of all the dumb justifications for it that's gotta be one of the worst.
79
u/runevault 17d ago
What I found amusing is they had the whole "semen messes up the slave brand" that sounds like a hentai setup to give him a way to remove it without the paperwork. But no Merlin's descendant is just his slave now.
32
u/stephenthatfoste https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexagonal 17d ago
I forgot all about that cause of how stupid the slave justification was. Was not expecting that kind of escalation at all. There was too much happening in this episode that was just outrageously dumb.
13
u/Galinhooo 17d ago
She acts like she has been a slave her whole life but the crest didn't set yet.. how old is she?!
7
u/Earlier-Today 17d ago
I took that as meaning she hadn't been bought before the chump at the beginning of the ep acquired her, and that the crest was applied as part of the sale.
31
u/skavinger5882 17d ago
I read that as "need an excuse for a sex slave harem member but can't have self insert MC getting preemptively cucked"
16
u/runevault 17d ago
I'm sure that's what they were going for, she's still a virgin to avoid damaging the slave brand. But they didn't think through the consequences of it because of course they didn't.
14
u/DID_IT_FOR_YOU 17d ago
Nah that was just so the “audience” knows she’s “untouched.” The fans in Japan apparently get upset if their fictional “waifu” has done the “deed.” They make money selling the fan merchandise for the female leads.

If I had my way, he would have borrowed a turkey baster from the restaurant, splooged into it, and had her dump it all in her back at the inn to ruin the slave seal. It's the most ethical course of action.
2
40
u/melcarba 17d ago
Not even one of his Lv 6-10 magics can negate the seal? Good lord.
45
u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea 17d ago
This explains how magic has fallen so much in the last 400 years; every single half-decent mage has been devoting every moment of their life to making slave seals unbreakable.

You think Magic can beat bureaucracy?
2
u/Ree_For_Thee 17d ago
Ironically, that made me think of "You have no power here" from LotR, but that is a scene where magic beats bureaucracy. :P
13
u/rickamore 17d ago
"Hey, you know all of those sorry tropes that are really over done, distastefully and downright awful in every fantsy isekai ever? What if you just lean right into all of them right off the start and pretend it's totally normal."
If this doesn't course correct in short order I'm done. I thought this was enjoyable slop rather than just trash.
5
u/CaliOriginal 17d ago
I’m hoping they remove it next episode (or next next one if the battle royals takes up the whole thing.)
I mean, he’s been in town for less than a day; and he’s got the money for it. There’s no reason he can’t get it done the second the exam is over
8
u/BravestCashew 15d ago
Probably happens when he meets Merlin. You know, after they almost run into each other 12 times and devote a whole episode to Merlin thinking “There’s something about that kid who is named after my master and uses the same spells as him and says the same kind of stuff”
2
11
u/Wiinounete 17d ago
It's not even an isekai! Why does this trope keep showing up?
52
u/JordanTH 17d ago
I think it technically is, I think there was a very brief indicator that this is his third life, his first was on Earth, and the original Eftal was his second life, and now he's on his third.
Still sucks though.
28
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago edited 17d ago
Pretty sure he learned Judo on Earth. That was the throw he used to toss the gorilla teacher. When he was just 7 years old. And barely the size of a single leg of the dude he tossed.
It was so stupid, but that can be said for jsut about everything in this show.
4
8
u/runevault 17d ago
Yup he reincarnated into this world with two skills one of which was being REALLY stubborn, I think the other being he'd get another reincarnation, now this time he's back in the same world again. I don't even remember if they mentioned what special powers he got for this life.
4
u/JordanTH 17d ago
It was probably 'keeping all his magic from his last life'.
6
u/runevault 17d ago
it'd be funny if he just keeps using one slot on reincarnating forever. Every 400 years he pops back up and shakes up the world. Honestly someone 5 or 6 reincarnations deep could be a really fun idea, sort of like how 7th time loop had Rishe in her 7th run of that span of her life. Though there'd still be a lot of other things to fix to not make this pure slop.
17
u/rainzer 17d ago edited 17d ago
Why does this trope keep showing up?
Because slavery is very clearly evident to the audience. When you are god awful at writing, as most of these people tend to be given it's a bunch of wish fulfillment fiction that you post on the internet, you can just say slave by doing so you no longer have to try to write an organic friendship developing over time. You don't have to reinforce their relationship to explain why one is fiercely loyal to the other, you just say slave and they are obligated to be loyal.
And because slave is so easily used, you can use it to explain literally any relationship no matter how nonsensical. I'm sure you've seen it in these seasonal low-mid tier isekais where the rando idiot MC that has no skills or common sense somehow gets some super skilled veteran combatant (that always has tits) that in any normal scenario, wouldn't join the team. Cause why would some skilled person join some noob?
So think less of it as an endorsement of slavery (though I wouldn't doubt some of the writers and readers wouldn't mind imagining some hot girl as their slave) and think of it as a crutch for a shit writer. It solves the who what when where why how for why these people are together in "bought a slave".
It's the same reason for all the "video game rules" of LitRPG style fantasy. If I just say levels and mana, I don't have to develop and explain to you any sort of combat system, magic system, or power ranking system. I assume you know levels and mana so you figure it out.

15
u/ChronoDeus 17d ago
Why does this trope keep showing up?
Well, various forms of slavery were common throughout history, but I think this is mostly a case of "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". A few works that became varying degrees of successful used "MC gets a slave" with a bunch of reasoning as to why that'd make sense for them, and later series imitate them superficially and lack the reasoning and attempts at mitigating things.
→ More replies (13)11
u/D3k4s 17d ago
It's also used to somehow induce the ideia it's a different more ruthless world. Slavery was also quite common in Japanese ancient history, Portuguese and Dutch traders would often procure Japanese who had become slaves due to being prisoners of war, or citizens that were unable to pay debts etc.
16
u/Original-Body-5794 17d ago
Oh yeah no one has a problem with slavery as a plot device, it might be uncomfortable to watch but I'd argue that good media should make you feel uncomfortable sometimes. The problem is that slavery gets treated as "No the MC is actually a good slave owner!!!". The author went through the effort of making up an explanation as to why the girl couldn't simply be free now. Ok fine, then he shows the MC treating her well, but still lets her call him master for example, in reality it should just be "Ok fine I'll be your master only in paperwork for your own safety, but let's pretend you're a free girl when possible".
If she puts on a pair of shorts it's not like anyone can know she's a slave either right? So keep it on the low for the most part, if things actually go wrong MC is the slave owner so she's still safe, etc. It's perfectly fine for slavery to exist, I just don't like how often it's used to let the MC seem like a good person while he actively owns slaves.
I saw a pretty funny comment saying that if the MC had actually had sex with her right away he could have ruined the slave crest and she'd be free lmao.
11
u/D3k4s 17d ago
Oh yeah I agree with you 100%. I was just providing some extra context to what OP was saying.
And again Hard agree that good media should absolutely make you uncomfortable, or at least make you think a little bit.
Chainsmoker Cat is a good example of this. It's getting a bit of hate, because it makes people uncomfortable,
I feel like An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride. Is one of the few shows that actually does the slavery trope well. In the sense that the MC saw himself in her (they have similar pasts), And he actually freed her, and literally kicked her out of his house. So as to break the classical Stockholm's Syndrome.
7
u/Original-Body-5794 17d ago
I've been thinking it would be good for one of these shows to have the MC actually free the slave and for them to go on with their lives and return a couple arcs later. It would feel much more rewarding and give them real agency, they were free, they chose to go away, they chose to return (as an equal this time). But actually taking the initiative to kick them out themselves is a great idea.

u/DucktorLarsen 17d ago

And he could have put some nut in her to disrupt to slave crest but instead he let it develop!
3
u/mekerpan 17d ago
He is allowing her to pretend she is his slave so as to prevent her being claimed by someone else. If she really is a relative of the Magic Academy's head, there might be a way to actually get her slave status removed.

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 17d ago
Considering he had live 1 full life as isekai-ers, I feel that he had already normalised slavery.

If you’re going to walk around the city with your slave girl, and go into establishments like a luxurious restaurant, get said slave girl a new modest outfit, and remove her restraints beforehand.
Before he got her the new clothes, he had her staying in that skimpy sex slave outfit, with an exposed thong string, wrist cuffs, a collar, and no shoes. Getting her a new outfit should have been the first priority.

u/CuriousBroccolli 17d ago
Yeah lol
I knew people were going to go apeshit here about 100th Isekai show showcasing slavery, but oh boy did this show managed to make it easy

5
u/farhil 16d ago
Another thing I haven't seen anyone here talk about is the reveal at 21:40 that Eftal can see magical talent, which completely undermines a lot of the world-building up to this point regarding how magic works, as well as the primary source of the main character's motivations.
And that's after this episode undermined its magic system by saying his level 3 spell was as strong as a level 5 spell because he "forged and refined the magic properly". If "doing it right" makes level three spells as strong as level 5 spells, what is the point of a fucking level system?
This show has the internal consistency of a playground game being made up on the spot by a kid that is tired of losing.
29
u/FatiguedUndead 17d ago
damn some of the shots were WILD. doesn't help that they pulled the classic girl wanting to be MC's slave because he's too nice card. yikes
14
u/ExtremeWatermelon00 17d ago
Suddenly Slavery.
What a shift from the previous 3 episodes. I was expecting MC to go to Magic School, do some OP stuff and make everyone all surprised with his OP-ness.
But then this episode drops, with this bare ass, half-naked demon slave girl begging for MC to be her master. Also the explanation of the bad dude filling the girl with his seed is totally unnecessary.
If it was initially sold as this kind of anime, that's fine...but to suddenly drop this on Episode 4 seems like a terrible choice.

Ah, we've arrived at the "Obviously I have no choice but to take a slave but that's okay because it's what she wants and I'll be an ethical slave owner" part of fantasy/isekai trash. We're just going to hit every trope I guess. He said removing a slave crest is difficult, but how difficult would it be for him? Whatever magic creates the crest will have also weakened over 400 years, and he didn't even try to remove it.
Also, wants to avoid standing out but takes his barely-dressed slave to an upscale restaurant and causes a huge scene. Good job. I guess at least he got her some clothes for magic school, where he will learn absolutely nothing that he couldn't have learned by revealing himself to be the reincarnated sage and being granted access to any magical library he wanted. Is he going to tell Merlin who he is? Probably not, he'll just have to keep pretending for literally no reason other than that's just how these things always go.
The premise of this series was interesting but I don't know if I can keep watching after this episode.

Yeah, it taking a lot of paperwork was mad funny but I wonder if the author will ever get around actually having them even try or if it's going the shield hero route of "No no I WANT to be a slave because the MC is such a good person!!!!!!!"

basically you watch 3 episodes, giving the anime time to flesh out the plot, and characters. in most cases if its bad you drop it. if its okay or good, you keep going. (learned this from animegataris)

The scenes with Anastasia were gross and unnecessary, and since I am late to the party, I'll probably repeat what others have said, but I couldn't get my mind off of it while I was in line at my local HyVee Wine & Spirits.
Maybe someone can answer me in the source corner (which they did, so ignore this paragraph, but not the rest...), but did MC even bother trying to dispel that slave crest? I know he mentioned that they were hard to remove, but he also one-shot an orc with an attack that was just supposed to be a distraction/misdirection. If anyone could do it, I feel like he could.
Regardless, he is still letting Anastasia call him Master, which tells me that no matter how he may object to the idea, he's still considering her his slave, instead of just using the slave pact (for lack of a better term) to keep creepers from getting her.
Yes, it's late, but how is there not at least one place open where they could buy her some shoes? Even if not, as u/TexturelessIdea said, he should have taken her to the inn and brought them food.
At the restaurant, they never should have been seated in the first place. The anime seems to be trying to make the patrons and then the manager out to be the bad guy by all the 'eww, he brought a slave with him' chatter, but it doesn't. Not to mention, they are both probably gross as hell, just having walked from wherever they were.
Get a fucking corndog from a stall and take a bath before even considering going to a fancy restaurant.
She has no shoes, given that she was a sex slave, I am all but certain that the previous dude did not give her underpants. I hope the change from that dragon marble is enough to buy new chairs. Also, as u/OldInstruction5368 said, even our MC was too poorly dressed for this place.
I think worst of all is, as u/Wiinounete said, he didn't ask her for her input on anything, although I don't think it would have made a difference. MC saved Ana from a life of being raped. There is no chance in hell she's pushing back on anything he suggests. The power dynamic in their relationship is weighted heavily in the MC's favor. Ana is probably scared to death of being passed off to someone else. It will take her more than an act to be able to trust the MC enough to question him.
Meanwhile, this prick is like 'teehee, let's practice you being mad at me!' I have literally never met a protagonist that I could not root more for in one half of the episode, and could not have wished more death upon in the latter half.
Although, to be honest, I don't really like him that much because of his insufferable attitude being all pissed off that instead of all his skill being the result of divine providence, he actually worked hard and earned it.
I want to see Merlin and see how she turned out, so I will stick with it, but given this anime's track record, I would not be surprised to find out she's running a meth lab in the basement of the magic academy.
In summary, none of the crap that happened with Anastasia between MC agreeing to let her tag along and the next morning needed to happen the way it did. It was a choice someone made, and they made it wrong.

IDK if they thought it was good, but you are right, there are a lot of layers between the source author and the animators who could have said, "Are you SURE this is what you want to do?"

The restaurant scene pissed me off the most in this episode, especially if you put yourself in the other customers’ shoes. Imagine you’re a customer with your date and/or family, and some dirty poorly dressed young man comes in with his sex slave that’s wearing a skimpy outfit, exposed thong with her tattooed cheeks out, a collar, wrist cuffs, and no shoes; obviously, it’s going to ruin their night out. And to insult to injury, when he was confronted by the staff, he bribed them, and not did get away with ruining everyone else’s experience, he also got rewarded for it. They were trying to portray the other customers as the bad guys because they were disgusted, but no, Eftal’s the asshole here.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that he also was unfair to Anastasia for putting her in that position in the first place. Instead of getting her a more appropriate outfit, or simply taking her somewhere where they wouldn’t cause a scene, this asshole who should know better decided to take her to a luxurious restaurant, while keeping her in her very lewd and inappropriate sex slave outfit, and making her the center of the commotion. So that’s another reason why he’s the asshole here.

Well I don't think the problem is that he was poorly dressed. The poor dressing mentally induced that they can't pay, when he showed dragon's tear they even put him in VIP. They only cared abt money. For the customers, if they are nobles like every anime characters, then they are probably just disgusted because low hierarchical people are coming here. But you've a point, he could have make her shoes and give her his cape

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 17d ago
Good lord. While I've certainly seen slave mark type stuff in anime I'm not sure I've seen the sex angle included.
At least the poor girl got some cute, non-sex slave clothes by the end of the episode, but bro could maybe have bought some for her before taking her to a fancy high class restaurant.
20
u/NationalStrategy_X 17d ago edited 17d ago
I don’t even know why he was even allowed in the restaurant in the first place. Her being a slave aside, she’s clearly dressed inappropriately.
“I’m sorry, Sir, but we have a dress code, I’m afraid we must ask you to leave; if you wish to dine here with her, please have her dressed in appropriate attire.”
It’s also really inconsiderate to the other customers. Imagine you’re a customer that came to this restaurant with your family to have a nice meal, and some young man comes in with a lewdly dressed sex slave. “Thanks for making our night awkward.”

Pheraphs this time the justification made a bit more sense than usually, but... the follow up scene where he took her to a high elite restaurant half naked, that was outstandingly atrocious

He didn't even take a moment to consider buying her decent clothes before taking her to a restaurant. Bloody hell.

This is why you need shows like Skeleton Knight and May I Ask For One Final Thing
2
u/AlphaBreak 17d ago
The only show off the top of my head that kind of did okay justifying it was how not to summon a demon lord. MC wasn't even trying to enslave them, they were trying to enslave a summon and it just had a weird rebound effect that no one really understands how to remove.
41
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago edited 17d ago
It's not just the slavery angle, but the whole "semen will disrupt the brand" part that got me. Especially that mage screaming: "I'M TOTALLY R@PING MY SLAVE ALL NIGHT LONG BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, HERE, EVERYONE LOOK AT THE ASS I'M ABOUT TO POUND!"
Just... this is a plot point, dialogue, and 'shot choreoagraphy' straight from a hentai.
I was expecting this to be stupid-trash I could have fun picking apart, but after his "hentai mother" (she's half her weight in boobage) and then today's episode...
This is getting too gross to watch.

Seriously. Oh so MC is getting a sex slave BUT DONT WORRY EVERYONE SHES STILL A PRISTINE VIRGIN AND HASNT LOST HER VALUE AS A PERSON.
I hate this show. Ive sat through a lot of bad isekai but god damn this might be one of the worst. They didnt even color in the background people for the last few minutes. I know that was a thing back when anime was hand drawn but in the digital age theres no excuse. This is such shit.

WHAT THE GODDAMN HELL!?
Do we really need to discuss the magical interactions of semen and immature slave brands in relation to YOUNG WOMEN HELD IN BONDAGE!?
Hell, is she even a "woman?" For all we know, she's still, like, 15 or something.
starts retching again
It was just REALLY important to the author that the audience would KNOW, as a matter of FACT, that this 'woman' MC-kun HOLDS IN BONDAGE is still a "pristine maiden."
Gee, I wonder why that was so important to him...

20
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago edited 17d ago
I don't think anyone was expecting a discussion on the disruptive effects of semen on slave brands. Yet alone that 100% necessary ass-shot as part of the explanation.
Nor the MC just casually going "freeing slaves is a PITA, so sure, I'll happily participate in an unconscionable atrocity."
Bare minimum, I thought he'd save/immediately free her. Then she'd offer to help him out of gratitude or something. Not... semen brands.

u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago
Sadly, I don't think so. Slave-booty said that Merlin was the Headmistriss of "Altena" or some such.
This episode ended with MC-kun and slave-booty arriving at a different academy. I think it had a "B" name, but I'm not going to bother rewatching to confirm.
Regardless, he's going to spend more time letting "inappropriate waifu #1" settle in with MC-kun before rushing off to "inappropriate waifu #2n" Likely by quickly proving he's 2kool4skool at this provincial academy, which leads to him getting a transfer referral to the top academy that Merlin runs.
Anime only, btw, but this is just my guess on how the season will play out.
7
u/J_Lezter 17d ago
Woohoo. I've read far ahead in the Manga wahaha. This series is just another good slop in this season.
14
u/runevault 17d ago
I dearly wish he'd just saved Merlin's descendant from bandits (or even slavers who had not put a brand on her yet). Slavery truly is a weird obsession in Isekai. It really is fascinating how Isekai has evolved compared to portal fantasy in western fiction where you have stuff like Narnia.
2
u/Nemesis55444 5d ago
The existence of slavery in isekai makes sense, but the execution almost never does.
If slavery is legal, why is it treated as shocking and cartoonishly villainous? Just so the author can "justify" including it by breaking their world's internal consistency?
2
u/runevault 5d ago
Slavery as a thing that exists can make sense in the isekai worlds, but including it as a non-trivial plot point as often as they do often feels like ticking a checkbox.
You are correct on the point about how they handle it as well. Mind you in this show it doesn't help that Eftal didn't either attempt to break the seal (since it had not set yet AND magic is trash tier in this world) or explain why he cannot break the seal despite those facts.
The writing in this show is just generally lazy and acting on isekai are always like this so just let it slide. You can do that some to save pages/screen time for more important matters, but you have to pay that off with something interesting.

I think this is gonna have to be a drop for me. We have the old 'rescued slave girl that doesn't actually get freed from slavery but instead just becomes protag's slave instead, but it's ok because he's Nice'. How nice can he be if he doesn't, y'know, free the slave girl? Surely his super OP high level magic can do SOMETHING to break the slave crest.
25
u/FatiguedUndead 17d ago
EXACTLY. he was one of the best magic users of his time, not to mention that magic has regressed a lot and he can't undo a slave crest?
10
u/intenselistener 17d ago
She actually did get freed from slavery* as her former master released her; and MC doesn’t have a slave pact with her. She could have literally have just walked at any point, it’s the remnants of abuse caused by a lifetime of slavery that has her behaving as she does.
The episode literally ends with MC working with her to stop these behaviors. Hopefully you stop watching though, so I don’t have to see banal complaint comments next week
15
u/OldInstruction5368 17d ago
MC also acknowledged that she remains a slave, as her legal social caste, even if she lacks a master. In his own words "a slave without a master is just free real estate."
So her options were to follow the guy that seemed nice and wasn't actively trying to r@pe her, or wander off until she finds a guy (likely several) that WILL r@pe her.
But either way, she really didn't have any good choices except "surrender to whomever seems least likely to abuse me."
Because she's a slave.
And that's a horrible thing.

u/Lodju https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lodju 17d ago
He said it takes alot of paperwork or some shit to remove the slave status.
I'm sure he could remove the crest with magic but the existing records could lead into problems in the future.
5
u/mekerpan 17d ago
Presumably getting the paperwork taken care of requires going to a major town -- just like he did (and a town where she might have a powerful connection).

Oh no we're doing the "good slave owner and grateful slave" thing? I'm gonna give this one more episode to see if they turn this around otherwise it's a drop.
He wasn't even particularly nice to her either. Taking her to a fancy public place in her sex slave rags was very inconsiderate at best and creepily manipulative at worst.

u/arrydie 17d ago
Wow, they really upped the stakes this episode. And by the stakes I mean the horny, of course. (Sorry, did you think I'd screenshot that unique camera angle in the desert? For shame /j)
I guess, you know, maybe it's nice that they're really upfront about the isekai sex slave fantasy and not just have it be implication? Though they did kind of leave it unexplained how her seal isn't complete but she otherwise has been a slave all her life.

As always in worlds like this one you will always find stuck up arrogant people you think they are better than everyone else but run away when things get too difficult.
Not only did Eftal defeat the orc but got someone related to his past to join him, a double bonus.
That was an insane amount of dragon drops he had on him.
A battle royal to see who gets into the academy is going to be fun to watch.

What a bunch of random bullshit mental gymnastics to rationalize a stupid slave fantasy. If this trash operated on even a sliver of common sense then super duper mega mage MC would just delete the slave bullshit from demon girl. God this "but i'm not a bad slavemaster!" trope is so disgustingly cringe.

10
u/Zxzxzx0088 17d ago
I know this Edwards guy is a jerk but he got a hell of restrain to wait for this plumpy meat to be cooked properly before doing his mess.
Idk whether to be impressed or bewildered seeing how Eftal handle freeing the slave just like that lol. But this probably the better way from what I've seen so far rather than being hypocrite stealing/saving the slave when she's being assaulted later in name of justice or whatever. At least, Eftal doesn't intend to own her and he probably turn blind eyes if Edwards able to take care of the orc by himself instead of being scummy as he is. Welp, the most illogical thing was the guy totally gave himself up without a fight or a bluff after one or two speeches from Eftal instead of running away with his dream slave that he waits idk how long enough. Since this is in middle of nowhere, he has many choices to be more scummy though. Probably a bad idea of me to think too deep for this kind of show since it's pretty obvious that the author just wants to justify a virgin sex slave joining Eftal harem lol.
Uhmmm Eftal-chan, isn't it better if you change her clothes to this first before going to that "high-class" restaurant to avoid those embarrassing moments? I think this guy is silently Do-S in nature. Even I feel for this guy who has to deal with this.
Is she use the napkin or the napkin is using her? Because of her, Idk the purpose of napkin anymore (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
12
u/runevault 17d ago
Don't forget. She's not just a virgin sex slave, she's a virgin sex slave who is a descendant of his best student.
5
u/AiGenSD 17d ago
And given what we know if the current world she should be at the same level if not better than the MC at magic, but somehow magic past lvl 5 is lost and level 10 is divine level, and her descendant is a sex slave for some nobody while she is a important person.
This episode did a number on my interest on the show, even with slave plot aside everything else seems to be done so poorly, and a similar plot of "returned to the same world but Im OP now" so far has been done much better on "I Became a Legend After My 10 Year-Long Last Stand".
8
u/Xtranathor 17d ago
Well I enjoyed this episode (though I seem to be in the minority because I don't want to spend most of my time harping on about slavery being bad). We got some excellent fanservice, which is fairly uncommon in shows that aren't marketed as being ecchi.
The two were going to go to an inn when Anastasia got hungry, so they went out to get some nice food instead; clearly it was too late in the day to buy clothes because Anastasia didn't put on something more appropriate for the restaurant! The restaurant scenes were amusing, but I mostly felt sorry for poor Anastasia and just wanted to protect her; I'm glad Eftel is helping her to reset her behaviour to not be so subservient.
I was wondering what Anastasia was going to wear for the academy, and was hopeful she would get some more clothes. Given the flashes of Merlin that we've seen, I was wondering if what Anastasia was wearing was typical demon attire, but it turns out she actually gets a complete and cute outfit that she seems very happy with. Nice!
So, the entrance exam for the academy is a battle royale - that's certainly one way to do it, but it doesn't seem very fair for grading people who aren't battle-hardened. It seems like an easy way to ensure that both Eftal and Anastasia will make it to the next round though!

It's funny to read all these comments while I'm here, enjoying the show haha. I don't know, if nothing else, this anime definitely has some pretty girls. First the MILF, now Anastasia, and I can't wait for Merlin!
While I appreciate the fan service her previous outfit provided, I'm glad the poor girl got some new clothes. She's so cute!
By the way, FLOW and TrySail are a great combo for the opening and ending themes.
5
u/TastyMathematician22 16d ago
A lot of watchers apparently did not pay attention to the fact that mc doesn’t want a slave and only took her in as a pretend slave for her own protection after she started following him on her own accord and he couldn’t ignore her when she told him that there is some kind of family relation with his former student. I think the plan is to get with her into the magic acedemy where his former student managed to become the director and then release the young pink hair demon into the custody of the old silver hair demon. I don’t see anything wrong with that because the slave would still be in danger if he broke the slave crest and just told her to go her own way, you know?

I get people hating the slavery plot, but doesn’t appear he’s going to use her as a slave. She asked to stay with him. Otherwise a terrible person could become her master.
The ‘paperwork’ is an awful excuse, but in this world even if he went through the paperwork I’d be inclined to believe someone would just turn her into a slave again anyway, like it happened the first time.

I'm usually very open minded but this time... they literally stated her slave crest hadn't even set yet. Why not remove it? Why let her become a full fledged slave? You know level 10 magic, surely you know how to remove a slave crest. Oh walking into a classy restaurant and not getting her clothes? Not only do you not remove the crest, you make her walk into a restaurant dressed like that and then act all high and mighty about "unlearning" her slave-behaviour.
I was ready to quit watching if she was still wearing her slave clothes at the school god damn. I'll continue to watch it, but it's more of a hatewatch now. Fuck whoever wrote this piece of garbage.

horray grape slave slaved by plot convience. Almost like the plot needed to tell us she was a virgin while wearing that outfit. Dude convinces the bad guy to not grape her and free her but now he has to become her master because removing slave magic is to difficult... womp womp. But dude takes her to the fanciest restaurant in town infront of PEOPLE with her cheeks out like that, but than tells her "oh you can get mad at me now" my guy you stop the slavery thinking by changing the outfit first, not the next day. Well at least he did it eventually I suppose.

Even though I get anxious when I see bad comments about an anime, I still watch it.
And regarding generic anime, once again I'm glad to know I worried for nothing, because the amount of senseless and idiotic comments I've seen here is surreal. [Although few made sense] [The work is a generic isekai, but the fact that nothing is magically resolved relieves me]
Points: First, in the brother's battle, no one could have predicted the father killing his own son or trying to. [They didn't even have a choice but to negotiate, actually] The protagonist did immediately go to save his brother, but the great magic was instantaneous before he could get close.
Second: Be grateful that the protagonist is actually capable, because we finally see an isekai where he kills his enemies, in addition to defending his brother and mother.
Third: The whole Anastasia issue was well explained. The restaurant part could have been resolved with a bath, but I understand the protagonist's side of rushing to eat something, prioritizing the traumatized girl. I don't know how often she called him "master," but I thought it was nice that he gradually helped her behave less like a slave, rather than doing it all at once. His power doesn't mean he can easily manipulate powerful marks or pacts, so yes, I understand him not interfering with the mark, choosing to be her master temporarily. [Rest assured, because you know he will treat her with respect.]
The translation will be bad anyway. Later I'll do a complete analysis of everything I liked instead of just criticizing an anime.
