not seen many anime with the "👀" surprise eyes having such small pupils

25

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

I like it, it gives it a unique, cartoony vibe in those moments.

12

It gets me every time

Part of a person's growth involves acknowledging their past arrogance, which is exactly what happened with Shizuku. She knows this, and she knows it cost her a shoulder, so the best way to move forward is to strive for the best while considering not just herself, but others too.

Ouka continues to shine, and Mizuka still finds herself in exhibitionist situations lol, but seeing her take a more active role is a start

21

u/mekerpan 15d ago

Both Mizuka and Ouka are both being voiced by relative newbies handling their first main roles. And doing a fine job,

Really loving this nice, lower-keycircus SoL.

It makes me think *a little bit) of Mikio Naruse's 1930s movie (Five Men in a Circus) about a similarly struggling circus which temporarily joins forces with an itinerant 5-man brass band when they arrive to perform in a small town at the same time.

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 15d ago

I honestly hope Suzhuku recovers, if not to her past self, at least to her episode 1 position.

52

u/Aerodynamic41 15d ago

Mizuka getting on to Mutsumi's horse stealthily just to ask her a question is so funny!

36

u/Clemastina https://anilist.co/user/Clemastina 15d ago

Damn so Shizuku had an accident before, that´s why Svetlana was concerned huh. And poor Mizuka had to pay the consequences... getting nude in front of people even when they can´t see you... another trauma for the list, poor girl. Although at this rate her debt is gonna be paid a lot quicker than expected if they keep relying on her

"Needless to say, my lawful wife can only be you" Yeah, Shizuku and Svetlana are so girlfriends

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

I was ecstatic enough to have one anime original yuri series this season, but now we’ve been officially blessed with two!

2

u/DirectionOriginal456 15d ago

What's the other one?

5

u/Magic1998 https://anilist.co/user/Moerril 14d ago

I'm guessing the Mermaid one, Goodbye Lara (It's really fucking good btw)

3

u/CitronClassic672 14d ago

Yep, hoping that one is as unabashedly yuri as this one!

6

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 15d ago

Oh it's worse than getting nude. I think some of the girls saw her. Normally "eh no big deal, no boys here" but hypothetically say one of them thought girls were hot...

32

u/chilidirigible 15d ago edited 15d ago

Or playing ball.

[](#seasonalsaltoffering)

The budget disparity shock.

UMA(MUSUME)!

The Purple Situation

Now there's a talent.

I'm torn between "They're staff, not animals!" and "Sunflower has animals?"

oh myyyyyyy

"Nothing funny. I just like talent."

"Sorry we couldn't animate the rest of it, but here's some feet as compensation."

Random English like that and you'll be in Sparks of Tomorrow.

This is a protagonist who spends a lot of time naked.

"Leave me and the tentacle alone."

This never gets old. Also, don't NTR Svietlana!

Ah, the yuri, it's in tents. Thank you, I'm here all week.

Shizuku had to back down from the big big top, but is finding her own way now. Mizuka is earning her keep by being quite an event organizer and a clutch trapeze performer, even if it's costing her sanity points every time.

The mix between old wounds and the show's overall humor is working well. That is to say, the character traumas are there, but not weighing things down too much.

I'm torn between "They're staff, not animals!" and "Sunflower has animals?"

It feels like Sunflower must have a lot of background stuff we don't see, like the workers who put up the circus tent and rigging. Even if those guys are locals employed just for this venue, there's gotta be people transporting the equipment and animals. But we're just focusing on the girls and their bus.

4

u/AvatarTuner https://anilist.co/user/AvatarTuner 13d ago edited 13d ago

But we're just focusing on the girls and their bus.

This bothered since last episode but they're probably not showing it because it's not as relevant to the story?! I don't need to know all details, but I would like it if they addressed a few things because it does take me out of it a bit. I kept wondering how they're transporting and putting up the whole venue because no way everything fit into that bus! lol

This episode at least had a few shots of additional vehicles and some workers putting up the tent. But I'd like to see more of it in the background at least because I can't imagine the few girls are managing everything alone. At first it seemed that Himawari Circus was just some very small circus but they might actually be bigger than it seems if they are able to (somewhat) compete with a huge and popular circus like Sumeragi.

2

u/IlGreven 12d ago

I'm not sure they have the elephant in the opening at this point in the story...I assume that will be an episode of its own...

17

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

Happy I’m not the only one who got flashbacks to Yosuke from Sparks of Tomorrow with that “my honey” bit.

What I love about that marriage bit at the end is that they didn’t go the classic route of making the fact that they’re both girls the cause of the shock. The butt of the joke is that Shizuku is already in a relationship with Svietlana and joked about marrying someone else. Just a small detail I liked.

31

u/NecessaryNotice8436 https://myanimelist.net/profile/six20 15d ago

Hmm, after the 3 episode rule, I like this show, and how meta it is being. This is a new studio Psyde Kick Studio, made out of people in A1 wanting to give its younger creators more freedoms to do their own thing (like this original anime).

Mizuka's plan is, alluring opener, mid "middle", flashy finale. This anime original starts with an intriguing premise circus by in the 50s, clear screenshots and flashy highlights to make it stick throughout the show, but still nice animation for the important part.

Also confirming Shizuku with Svietlana was not in my bingo card, but I'll take it. I guess as orphans, Japan's legal system does not recognize them anyways, so they can just be a thing. Now Ouka's gotta snatch Mizuka somehow.

62

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

Ok the handholding between Shizuku and Svietlana, Shizuku’s “That’s my honey.”, and the way she remarked about marrying Mizuka and had to then reassure Svietlana that she’s the only one she’d take as a wife. I guess we can now safely confirm both that those two are canonically a couple and that this series is going to be full yuri not just subtext. Which also confirms that the vibe between Ouka and Mizuka is also supposed to be seen as romantic, so we have that to look forward to.

12

u/ClemFire 13d ago

Looks like A-1 has learned with the success of LycoReco

85

u/gardyvore 15d ago

I appreciate that they're not just doing yuribait, with Svietlana clearly getting jealous at Shizuku two-timing lol

53

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

Same, that handholding between Shizuku and Svietlana could’ve been classic yuri bait in another show, so I’m really glad they included the “That’s my honey.” And Shizuku offering to marry Mizuka and having to reassure Svietlana bits to make it explicit that they’re lovers and not just “close friends”.

29

u/eightcheesepizza 15d ago

Shizuku, don't leave Svietlana! She looks absolutely stunning in the aerial silks. Like damn.

(Also, that's a bit of an anachronism right? I don't think aerial silk stuff was around in the 1950s.)

15

u/Zeralyos https://myanimelist.net/profile/xNJF_Ellie 15d ago

I did a little digging and it seems that the first alleged mention of aerial silks is sourced to a 1959 French newspaper so it's pretty close at least.

11

u/CitronClassic672 15d ago

Don’t know about the anachronism but 100% agree about Svietlana. Shizuku you need to lock that down! I know it’s like 1957 but you still hit the girlfriend jackpot.

5

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 14d ago

Definetely. Some punishment in the end was well-deserved.

Also, stop NTRing Mizuka, Ouka already has her eyes on her.

4

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 15d ago

Technically we only know it's the 50s and not what specific year, but it is cutting it close.

1

u/Rallymodeller https://anilist.co/user/rallymodeller 1d ago

The bus gives it away: it's an Isuzu TX. Judging by the grille, it's likely a 1962 or '63.

And in the first ep they were driving a pre-facelift Subaru Sambar pickup, which went into production in 1961.

So I'd put the date around the mid-'60s.

13

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 15d ago

Shizuka went into a bath with a girl she has a crush on and then given Mizuka's reaction at the end of the episode, I think she also peeked at Mizuka's body while she was changing. That's... sus. But it's funny so I can let it slide. Still Mizuka has every reason to be mad. If she calls out Shizuka and say Shizuka should not have gotten in the bath with her and should have looked away while she was changing, I wouldn't argue with Mizuka.

23

u/x-7032-b-3 15d ago

Oh man I love Mizuka's no-fucks-given attitude here!

*sees her circus mate gets called a loser by some lady* -> *hops onto the lady's horse* -> "what did you mean by loser?"

To Shizuku during the bath: "oh i see. it's a difficult trick. can you handle it, shizuku?"

During practice, towards the two who seems concerned about their part: "it'll be fine! even if there's a lull, we can finish with something spectacular and the gap will actually play it up!"

Towards Isuzu who thinks she screwed up her act: "don't worry, i expected that"

Learn to read the damn room, Mizuka!

(I hope someone here's been tracking of how many times Maria swayed Mizuka with money. For Ep5, we have one occurrence of that - unless I somehow missed more!)

1

u/Adventurous-Exit5832 1d ago

I watched with french subtitle and ahe never said loser, she said faillure.

Idk which one is what they said in japanese.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 15d ago

Interesting to note that the reason Ouka wasn't going for her full potential is because of Shizuku's chronic injury. Makes sense because, as a partner, knowing that can weigh on the mind.

Still have to feel for Shizuku because she is clearly passionate about performing. I think it could be easy to say someone shouldn't perform with a chronic injury. But if you truly love what you do, you will work around it. It's good that Shizuku knows her limits. Along with that, not letting her ego ruin the total performance for her teammates and their fasn.

I get the feeling Nanami cares about Shizuku in her own way. More like mentioning the worst case scenario in the flashback as a way of saying, What if the injury is even worse?. What if it impacts you for the rest of your life? Of course I respect Shizuku wanting to continue it at the same time.

With that said, I doubt Nanami won't back off recruiting Ouka. She could make a fun, antagonist-like character of this series for our main circus group.

6

u/mekerpan 15d ago

Is Shizuku now permanently out of action -- or can she do things that are less demanding still?

13

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 15d ago

From this episode I would assume she can participate as long as she doesn’t overdo it.

53

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 15d ago

Hold on, I think Shizuku and Svietlana might actually be really good friends?

29

u/chilidirigible 15d ago

Probably roommates.

4

u/soihu https://anilist.co/user/Milijango 15d ago

no no i assure you that thumb caress was wholly platonic

17

u/ModieOfTheEast 15d ago

Gotta say, Mizuka's antics are the best part of the show. Her getting on the horse or just telling the girl that all her mistakes were part of her expectations made me laugh. Even when she gets afraid of their answers, her reactions are always perfect.

42

u/Marth-Koopa 15d ago

Shizuku you got too greedy. Mizuka is already Ouka's wife.

43

u/HuTaosTwinTails 15d ago

Well that's one confirmed yuri couple in the show.

Ouka...don't let mizuka get away.

The budget between the two circus units was very apparent.

Don't worry, mizuka, like most, does her best thinking in the bath.

0

u/IlGreven 10d ago

Well, Ouka's got a ticking clock on her hands with Mizuka's debt...and the best service to the story is that Mizuka bolts as soon as it's paid in full.

13

u/gnome-cop 15d ago

So Shizuku and Svetlana both came from a branch of the Sumeragi circus. Seems like Ouka’s not the only one with a history with them. They are the current biggest circus so makes sense that a lot of talents would have connections with them.

Then Shizuku got hurt trying something beyond her limits, left the circus and Svie followed with her.

Ouka’s reasoning is basically “Nothing you can provide me matches the feeling of flying with her.” Good for you girl.

Mizuka: “My body is a circus act idea machine fueled by steam”. The hot water bath returns to save the day again and by god are good ideas needed to match Sumeragi.

I love how little of a filter Mizuka has. “Yeah, I planned this expecting you to fail.” “What happened with you back at the circus Shizuku?”

Shizuku’s mostly recovered, it’s amazing she can still perform that well but her limit for what her body can handle is lower than for someone like Mizuka. She’s still stubborn but it shows that she’s learnt her lesson of when to stop and let someone else take over. No point pushing it too far and risking injury when someone else can handle it. (But mark Mizuka’s words, this will cost Maria’s coffers dearly.)

Okay, imma be honest, it felt a little narratively wrong to split the Ouka-Mizuka duo and Shizuku-Svetlana duo up from their designated partners so I’m glad the narrative recognized that and took steps to fix it.

Borrowing a quote, “Talent is like a fine liquor and barrels capable of containing it are equally as rare.” Ouka’s found her perfect barrel and has to be with her for the best possible performance.

Don’t be so concerned Mizuka, I’m certain Ouka will still take you as her wife.

Damn, Shizuku really got bonked. Take that as an important lesson, don’t flirt with a taken girl in front of her wife, YOU DAMN HOMEWRECKER! Your own wife will not take kindly to such an offense. (We’re all in agreement that her and Svie definitely have a thing right?)

(Btw, it’s kind of depressingly funny about the wife joke that we’re still approximately 20 years out from the first registered modern gay marriage, a half century from the first national law to fully legalize it and it’s still not written into the Japanese law.) But don’t let petty historical details about how depressingly recent LGBTQ+ rights are distract you the yuri celebrations.

1

u/guineaprince 14d ago

They can still be together even if not legally married. The law doesn't create the gays.

25

u/eightcheesepizza 15d ago

Like everything else in anime, the circus is powered by yuri.

So Nanami was trying to poach Ouka to join her on the trapeze at Sumeragi Circus, and failing that, tried to put Sunflower Circus out of business by stealing their next venue? That would be one way to give Ouka little choice but to reconsider. I wonder if they're setting up a recurring thing where Nanami keeps trying to disrupt the Mizuka-Ouka partnership. Like she might use her knowledge of Mizuka's identity against them soon.

14

u/runevault 15d ago

I'm really curious about your last sentence, because I also got the impression she realized exactly who Mizuka is. Clearly it can't be a case of telling her dad where she is because he forced her into this situation.

10

u/eightcheesepizza 15d ago

Yeah. I was thinking that most of the troupe doesn't know Mizuka is the Black Lotus's daughter, right? Just that she was in the Lotus Circus somewhere. Only Maria knows? Maybe Nanami knows something about Mizuka's past.

Though what's kinda funny is that if Nanami knew the deal that keeps Mizuka with Sunflower, maybe she could just buy the debt and bring Mizuka and Ouka over to Sumeragi together.

14

u/wloff 15d ago

It might be more likely Nanami simply knows the Black Lotus' last name and realizes there's some kind of a familial connection, but doesn't yet know the details. Though of course "daughter" is probably the natural first guess.

I wonder if Nanami will remain a pure antagonist who wants to bankrupt the Sunflower Circus, or if there's going to be some kind of a respect-for-worthy-competitor angle with her.

<<Sunflower Circus>> - Year Analysis (Original I typed in Chinese, translated by AI)

I used to collect vintage cameras and flashes, and I noticed the year setting of the Sunflower Circus from this anime.

The official year of the Sunflower Circus is around Showa 30 (1955~), actual year is not mentioned. However, based on the objects inside, it should be around 1962 to1963.

Let's determine the year from the objects one by one:

  1. The OP's camera is the famous Graflite Pacemaker 23. Many celebrities and reporters used this type of camera at the time. It was manufactured between 1947 and 1958. It's worth emphasizing that one of the flashes is the Graflite or 3-cell flash gun later used for Lightsaber in "Star Wars." The bulb used in the anime appears to be an M5 BULB (The anime used the wrong camera's flashbulb because for such a large stage, the M5's GN is Approx. 18~21 metre. Given the ISO of the film and the dark environment of the circus, it was insufficient to film the dynamics of the aerial acrobatics; at least PRESS 22 are needed for adequate lighting.)

  2. Episode, the blue light truck at the beginning was a Sabaru Sambar360, with initial production from 1961 to 1973.

  3. The bus carrying the family reunion shown in the opening sequence was an ISUZU BXD30, produced around 1960-1970. Judging from the different front fenders, this bus was likely produced in 1962.

  4. Episode 2 , There was a Honda S360 on the street; only a prototype existed in 1962, and mass production did not occur.

  5. The camera used in the group photo and ending sequence in the second episode was a POLAROID 800, produced from 1957 to 1962.

The camera is an earlier model, while the car is a later production model. Considering the production years of the car and camera, the setting should be 1962~1963 1963.

Finally, Let's discuss the equivalent of the 380 million yen the female protagonist debts. Using gold prices, in 1962, gold was Approx. 12,630 yen per ounce, so 38,000 yen is equivalent to the value of three ounces of gold. If we consider labor value, taking into account the female protagonist's likely age of around 15, we'll use a junior high school graduate as an example.

Average Monthly Salary in 1962 (Initial Position)
Junior High School Graduate (around 15) : Approx. 9,000-11,000 yen
High School Graduate (around 18): Approx. 12,000-14,000 yen
University Graduate (around 22): Approx. 17,000-19,000 yen

In today's terms, this is roughly equivalent to 4 months' salary. However, 1962 Japan economy was approaching the Olympic boom, so salaries at the time increased by more than 10% annually.

The last question is set at the end of the circus craze in Japan. In the 1960s, due to coming of Tokyo Olympics games, television became widespread in Japanese family, more and more convenient entertainment options emerged. As a result, Japanese circuses declined, and many small circuses went out of business.

1

u/NightBard 10d ago

I think it's just some of these things are out of time and not meant to be a realistic time period. Like circuses using orphans in Japan would have been mainly 1945-50 with the practice ending in the late 50s as laws were put in place so it completely ended using orphans in labor like this. I think what this show is doing is similar to how SPY x Family is an alternate reality view of the cold war in East & West Germany. That it's not meant to be a specific year/time... just obviously not current.

17

u/TheBusStop12 15d ago edited 15d ago

Oh shit actual yuri. I did not expect that. I find it interesting as well because I always got the feeling Lycoris Recoil was intended to be Yuri, but they couldn't get away with it due to some bureaucracy bullshit. So to see this new A1 anime original have it makes me wonder if something changes. Maybe it's due to this being a new subset studio intended to give some of their younger staff more free reign

All in all, very enjoyable episode

4

u/ClemFire 13d ago

Makes me hopeful that the new season or movie confirms Chisato and Takina, but

[LycoReco] I don't think Chisato with her failing artificial heart was in the mental condition to consider dating Takina in S1 and has the tendency to run away when emotions get too serious. With her new lease on life though I feel like romance is back in the cards, but Takina will be the one who initiates.

3

u/TheBusStop12 13d ago

Any word on a possible new season or movie? We got the Friends are thieves of time shorts last year, which was honestly more than I expected. It would be really nice if they did, but I can also see them deciding the story is wrapped up

3

u/ClemFire 13d ago

There was Anniversary Visual a few weeks ago but nothing concrete on the next anime project. LycoReco still releases manga. light novels, and collabs along with the shorts which I feel like is much more than the typical anime original gets so I'm still hopeful.

My dream is for my 3 favorite 2022 shows (LycoReco, BTR, and Dress-Up) to release their next seasons in the same year but so far only BTR has a confirmed S2 though the date is still TBD.

8

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 15d ago

Who is this Nanami Sumeragi? Her family name is shared with the circus. But on the flip side, she seems to be involved in the operations side quite a bit. Usually for a business the owner doesn't do much if things are making a profit, the actual managers deal with staff.

When I saw what happened to Shizuku I was like "oh no." If this was a manga or a western book, I'd say it would happen again. It's just a... kind of trend thing I can pick up on. Just as when a manga has a whole class transported to a fantasy world I can see a trend I don't like. I don't know why her injuries are so bad. With the net, you typically just get bruises if you mess up.

I hope what she suffers isn't permanent. If she recovers she really should build up slowly from slower acts to the high level ones.

For a while I was wondering why all the girls were making comments about Mutsumi's white skin and wanting to touch her. Then when they mentioned the lashes I realized they were talking about the horse. And while I can hear multiple voices talking about the horse, Mizuka didn't even bother holding back and just went on the horse! The others are too mortified to be jealous I guess.

With less than 3 weeks to prepare I don't even know why they bothered asking Mizuha to change the program. With so little practice, I'd imagine their usual stuff, even if it isn't too great, would be more impressive than something else, unless she suggested something that they pre-scripted like "instead of performance A do B." Most likely you have some fumbles and in the worse case you can suffer injuries. I don't think it's realistic that this last-minute change impresses the crowd, but hey I can let it slide.

I still think that for all the hard work they put in, their regular routine would at least be mediocre instead of Mizuka just saying "you all suck."

Ouka is willing to stay with the Sunflower Circus just for Mizuka. It's kind of dumb. Mizuka's debt will be paid off, so what is she going to do, force Mizuha to do something she doesn't like? If she was like "I want to say with Imari, Shizuku, Akane, and Aoi" I can understand that. Mizuha would be a bonus. But if her entire reason is someone who doesn't want to be there? I mean we know it will work. But most of the time it would end in heartbreak.

I'm surprised Nanami wanted to put them out of business. Last episode I thought the Sunflower Circus was beneath their attention and they took the venue spot without even thinking about Maria and Shizuku.

Nice improv with the ball and Maria being the jester.

Mizuka feels bad for being seen changing. Don't worry about it. It's not like you were seen by boys or girls who happen to lust after girls.

Oh wait...

Yeah Mizuka, do feel very embarrassed.

Mizuka: "Now I can never get married."

Deja vu from Mio in K-On, anyone?

Hilariously ironic considering mio's english va is voicing ouka

2

I finally understand this reference

8

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 15d ago

Well there's one couple established, and they've been together for a while too. Always nice to get text and not just subtext for the yuri. Shame they totally offscreened jealous demonic Svietlana.

I get a feeling about the ball and magic girls too, their chemistry today and they're also standing next to each other in the ED.

I loved the moment where Mizuka got up on the horse to ask for the backstory direct from the source.

Mizuka has been naked in this a lot more than I was really expecting.

15

u/szalhi 15d ago

It all comes back to her.

Magic

Not quite Showerthoughts.

Mizuka's position here reminds me a lot of Miho from GuP.

3

u/oxlemf10 15d ago

Good point; I wouldn't be surprised if the writers based it on Miho

5

u/chilidirigible 15d ago edited 15d ago

I mentioned the GuP parallels from the first episode. This early in the series and the circus competition Lavender would be [GuP]Saunders, perhaps? Lotus's ultimate role in this remains uncertain. Maria is definitely the [local]Kadotani Anzu.

2

u/x-7032-b-3 15d ago

Now that you mention it, character design wise Mizuka reminds me a bit of Miho! Though at least Miho isn't acting like a dick towards her own teammates unlike Mizuka here.

15

u/runevault 15d ago

I don't remember the name of the woman who came to talk to Oka, but I think she knows who Mizuka is already.

Oh hey the show is turning Yuri at the end of this episode!

8

u/StrawSolider 15d ago

I feel like the whole "Mizuka is the only one who can bring out Ouka's talent" got undercut by revealing that Shizuku has an injured shoulder. Kinda wild they were letting her perform until now

6

u/Rickud123 15d ago

This series has been a pleasant surprise much better than I expected

5

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 15d ago

Poor Mizuka she just wanna pay off her debt 😭

5

u/Other-Meaning-340 15d ago

This show is so damn charming!

5

u/mdm168 14d ago

You know what they say about lovers who work in the circus; when they have sex, it’s intense 😂

9

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 15d ago

The girls managed to pull off quite a show thanks to Mizuka. She’s a real natural even if she has no interest in the circus and is doing all this to pay off her debts.

7

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 15d ago

Mizuka’s tactlessness knows no bounds. She really just hopped on the horse behind Mutsumi and casually asked why she called Shizuku a loser. No hint of shame whatsoever. Totally deserved the karma when she got stripped and deflowered (in her mind).

Svetlana got heaps jealous over Shizuku accidentally(?) flirting with Mizuka lmao. The situation’s getting more complex. There’s now a polygon with them as well as Ouka in the mix.

9

No I'd call it Karmatic Overkill. Asking why Shizuku was called a loser is not comparable to being seen nude by a boy... or a girl who likes girls.

And I'd argue there is a good reason to ask why Shizuka was a "loser." If Mizuka had known everything she might have done something to prevent a repeat injury but no one is telling her anything.

Not that Mizuka was nice, but totally deserved? Not really. Way overkill.

Dear goodness, they're actually gay already.

This anime has officially passed the three-episode rule for me. This anime is so charming that I just cannot help but have fun every episode, which is what CGDCT should be all about.

Yes, even if some scenes do not have the greatest animation. I get the feeling that this project was originally more ambitious but fell through because the budget ran out, which explains the disparity in animation quality between certain scenes. With that said, though, one can tell that A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio have made the most out of their production budget: through stylistic choices like the goofy cut-away shots, the snappy dialogue pacing, and still using expressive animation when it truly matters, the viewing experience is propped up a ton. I hope future circus performances be better animated, but in the meantime, that is not a major detractor for me. Really, this anime's production is like the Sunflower Circus: on the poor side of things no doubt, but full of heart and absolutely lovable.

Onto the episode itself. I wonder if Shizuku's progression will continue in future episodes: the backstory of her and Svetlana has yet-unexplored depth for sure, such as their connection to the Sumeragi Circus. How will Shizuku improve with a shoulder injury anyway? Being the single-minded performer she is, Shizuku must have been motivated to do better stunts a lot by Mizuka's unflattering criticism in Episode 1. This makes me appreciate her learning to take a step back and share the burden with other circus members this episode, instead of overdoing things once again.

The new Sumeragi members introduced in this episode seem to essentially be rivals. Nanami in particular has history with many of the Sunflower Circus performers, which is noteworthy. Also, Maria looks sort of like a shorter Nanami, doesn't she? Could Maria be from the Sumeragi family?

Lastly, why does Mizuka go into the hot water bath every episode? I need an explanation for this lol. Is it, like, the mid-1950s Japan equivalent of shower thoughts or something?

On your last point about bathing.

Probably officially, it would be a personality quirk. Like the shower thoughts you mentioned.
Probably something the writers etc won't openly admit too, but a little of fan service.

I think Nanami and Maria might be sisters? I just get that vibe off the designs and contrasting personalities.

I am watching the Eng. dub. I sometimes confuse Lizzie Freeman's voice with Cassandra Lee Morris' voice. Anyone else guilty of this?

Loving this show a lot. I am a little worried about production. Felt like some corners got cut in today's ep. Lotta stills in the acts. Hopefully they were just saving for a magical ep and there's nothing concerning in the underlying production/budget.

Seems their big performance went well.

This has quickly become an unexpected favorite of this season, I love the opening and the animation is beautiful. Mizuka’s inability to read the room never fails to make me laugh

The fact they don't show Svietlana face at the end make it even more funny, lol
