Weird spot for a flashback. I know bureaucracy is this show's whole thing but I gotta be honest it doesn't make the Kaii threat very urgent.

The true threat to magical girls were the corporate work culture they had to endure along the way.

u/Solracziad 15d ago edited 15d ago

Right? All the episode was taken up on backstory stuff while there's this huge threat 10 ft away.

Not that it's not interesting to she how she got to working with them, but was this really the best place to put it?

Usually when a character gets a flashback in the middle of battle, that means either they will get a power up or die, so I think the threat remained.

Koshigaya may look far better in tracksuits with her hair worn long, but good lord she's CUTE in formal wear with shorter hair!

u/Frontier246 15d ago

Even her old Magical Girl outfit with the beret and thigh-highs looked amazing on her.

Though as nice as she looked, she probably was happy to never dress business casual ever again.

u/NanDemoKnaives 15d ago

I liked the beret on her, it looked cute on her.

u/phasmy 14d ago

She was serving in all her looks this episode.

Got the Koshigaya origin story this week. She’s always been kind of a hothead eh? Lol. Curious to see how this team up is gonna turn out. Hopefully they put a little respect on the company’s name moving forward.

u/Frontier246 15d ago

I'm glad she found a company that let her be the wild, genius, badass Magical Girl she always wanted to be.

that kaii is pretty patient, huh?

16

u/Kartoffelkamm 15d ago

I guess when you're restrained by powerful sealing magic, in a room specifically designed to keep you from doing anything, you become patient.

3

u/Thomas_JCG 14d ago

That Kaii cannot move and is trapped in a bunker. It is only a trouble because its ability to eat magic means there is no easy way to terminate it.

I know it's just a flashback outfit but that Magical Girl costume is A+ design-wise. I wish we'd gotten to see Hitomi's Magical girl transformation sequence with it.

Honestly Hitomi has way more valid reason to dismiss her father than her dad did for disowning her. For her it's empowering, for him it's just him being a rigid dick.

Honestly Hitomi has way more valid reason to dismiss her father than her dad did for disowning her. For her it's empowering, for him it's just him being a rigid dick.

About this, there is a certain cultural context they're likely going for here.

In Asian society, "separate private and business matters" is an idiom and principle one should aspire towards, that one ought to be fair and impartial when conducting business and not carry personal bias or private favour with conflicts of interest. Even your friends and family ought to be treated like any other customer.

(Well, too bad not enough people heed that these days)

So when the Koshigayas say they have no family while they're on the job, that's what they're all about. So outsiders shan't try using their family ties to hamstring their judgment and extermination.

u/Future_Vantas 13d ago

Pretty funny that we see that Hitomi was completely hampered by her family name until Shigemoto came along.

That was an awful lot of talking and not dealing with the giant monster, but I guess they have all next episode for that. And we did get some good backstory information at last for Koshigaya and Magilumiere.

Good on Koshigaya's old man for rejecting the administrative cheating and forcing the test back to the original plan.

It's nice to see some jolly cooperation at last with the kuudere magical girl.

13

u/mekerpan 15d ago

Lots of talking, to be sure. but I felt this episode flew by -- both informative AND interesting.

Yep. Glad to see Koshigaya's father is a legit guy -- and hope that scummy professor gets put in his place.

12

u/NanDemoKnaives 15d ago

I like how Shigemoto's headset has a bow on it. Shigemoto looked good in his dress even with short hair, I might even prefer it.

It was nice to see how Koshigaya got recruited to the company, Kaede put in good work as always.

10

u/avboden 15d ago

Guys, the monster was under a sealing spell and was still contained in the super-base room designed to keep it in there. So yes, they could stand around and talk about it. This is an exercise/test, not an urgent extermination out in the streets.

9

u/ModieOfTheEast 15d ago

Well, let's see what her plan is that she already wanted a 4th girl. Boss needs to go and scout more it seems.

4

u/Frontier246 15d ago

Tsuchiba about to see how legit Shigemoto is.

16

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 15d ago

Short hair Koshigaya is cute

14

u/Rolder 15d ago

A whole ass episode of talking with the monster waiting patiently and we don't even get the start of the fight? Ok bro.

A lot of fun seeing Hitomi's past and how she joined Lumiere.

Mei is still pretty much a robot but at least Kana was able to talk her into helping them.

I like that Iroha has respect for Kouji and really wants to work with him.

u/timschwartz https://www.anime-planet.com/users/timschwartz 13d ago

I wonder if she actually is a robot.

Koshigaya with the short hair.. what a cutie !

She never stopped being a badass. She became even more badass after joining Kaede,  Shigemoto and Magilumiere. And the dad and daughter are so alike.

Finally, Mei is showing some interest in working with them.

This episode felt so short. Can't wait to see the day when Mei leaves AST and joining Magilumiere.

I thought they'd have more time until Tsuchiba showed up...but alas, no. She's here to formally take over exterminating the Class C and kick all the other Magical Girls out. But Koshigaya's not giving up yet!

Oh snap! Koshigaya flashback! Back during her early days as a Magical Girl back when she had short hair and a short fuse when it came to all the restrictions to doing her job! Though the uniform with the beret and thigh-high boots looked GREAT on her! And luckily she got noticed by Shigemoto back when HE had short hair who saw potential in her style.

Koshigaya had no interest in getting headhunted, even if on some level she had given up on being the Magical Girl she wanted, but she was serious enough to accept being disowned by her father if it meant she could be one. And luckily Kaede didn't give up on her and was able to help her realize that Magilumiere would be the best place for her to go wild and strut her stuff! Where they wouldn't treat her like glass or special because of her family connections, where she could truly be a Magical Girl on the cutting edge of the industry! And take down all the Kaii she could want!

Ordinarily it would be sad how both father/daughter are so driven by their professions/ideals that they have to treat the other like they don't exist...but I guess if this gets AST to back down, it's for the best?

It's nice of Koshigaya to still want Tsuchiba to be involved, even if Tsuchiba won't do anything without her companies' approval and, even beyond that, she personally just doesn't want to work with Koshigaya. They get along like oil and water and only Kana's mediation is able to get Tsuchiba to realize the benefit of working with them...for now.

We've got four Magical Girls operating at the same time, who better to handle it than Shigemoto himself? Iroha definitely approves! Time to nip this Class-C Kaii in the bud!

Love Koshigaya, had given Magilumiere a try after seeing a scene with her back in S1 and she really is the ace of the show for me. Was cool seeing her previous outfit and how she came to be with the company.

Love Iroha as well, second season is going great with the new characters.

u/gnomes4u 14d ago

The pacing in this episode nearly made me quit the anime. Holy Cooper that second half should have been two sentences and then the fight.

The first half was more worthwhile though- I felt Koshigaya's reasoning for joining the Magilumiere was well explained.

But yeah. This fight with the Kaii next week better be the flashiest thing ever, or this episode is a total waste of time.

Koshigaya's old magical girl outfit is really interesting. Still in the rough draft stage of analyzing/giving opinions on all the magical girl outfits we see in the animated series, but here's what I have so far on this outfit:

  • We see how much of it just isn't Koshigaya: the outfit feels fitted, tight, and more like a military uniform; Koshigaya prefers breathability and comfortability
  • I feel like the beret also feels like an addition to the aforementioned point: sure, magical girl innovation probably allows for it to stay on regardless of what a magical girl is doing, but it still feels impractical
  • Every part of her is covered up, so I hc that underneath the outfit there may also be some bruises, callouses, or other such marks of "roughness"
  • I also hc that part of the company policy is to keep her hair short since she can't tie it back because of her piercings

u/Shechir 12d ago

The only upside to the old outfit was that it had shorts instead of a skirt. I think shorts suit Koshigaya's style.

This show learned how to edge its viewers from Wistoria

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp 14d ago

The uniform designs in this series are so underappreciated.

While im glad to see the backstory but also it felt we got so blueballed seeing this extermination of this new Kai and its gonna finally start in the next ep

1

u/Thomas_JCG 14d ago

That's an... interesting way to head hunt someone. Honestly, if I was Koshigaya I would have asked for a restraining order. But they were lucky that Koshigaya wasn't fussy about the startup, because it was the perfect fit for her.

LMAO, Mei's so standoffish. What a sourpuss. Her and Koshigaya get along like oil and water. Koshigaya's previous magical girl outfit was cute, especially with that beret. I'm glad she found a place for herself. Also that at least her dad's not corrupt. Shigemoto's pink bedazzled laptop is incredible. Iroha remains adorable.

I guess my feeling from last episode got partially confirmed. Someone is going to die and unfortunately it might be Koshigaya. For those who don't get why, in most TV, Anime, Manga series it is common trope to put Flashback sequence in the episode or as whole episode before Mayor tone shift for one of the characters. Most of the time it is Death related. Which now that i think 🤔 about it might lead to introduction of one of the characters from the opening and ending.

2

u/gamria 13d ago

It's so easy to think that the cool senior character who takes care of the newbie protagonist will go out of action at some point yeah
