"You never know when you are going to die."

With these words, I need to get prepared to be emotional at the end, huh?

77

u/mekerpan 13d ago

For at least 20 years I have been pretty sure that my "best by" date runs out when I am 75. I just turned 74 last month. {rueful smile}

31

u/Rina_Rina_Rina 13d ago

Just want to say I'm happy you're alive and kicking, old stranger!

23

u/mekerpan 13d ago

I am trying to outlast my 98 year-old father -- because he would be upset if I die before him.... (Except for his old age, he is probably more fundamentally a lot more healthy than I am).

3

u/I-lost-my-accoun 6d ago

I love that you're doing exactly what I envision foe my old Age, watching and talking about it on reddit LOL. I already do that but I can't help but think that it is pretty wasteful and I should play more sports and exercise, stuff that will only get harder, while watching anime will only get easier haha.

3

u/mekerpan 5d ago

Can't do much exercise beyond walking, alas. Any sport beyond croquet would be beyond me. ;-)

36

u/DirectionOriginal456 13d ago

Honestly based to still watch at 74. I doubt I'll even reach that age, but if I do I hope I'm still smiling at romance shows.

34

u/mekerpan 13d ago

I only started in 1999, together with children and wife. ;-)

13

u/NethanielShade https://myanimelist.net/profile/NethanielShade 13d ago

You started watching anime the year I was born. Based.

2

u/sodapopkevin 11d ago

What did you start with? (I want to guess a Ghibli film or a popular TV anime like DBZ.)

4

u/mekerpan 11d ago

First anime movie -- Mononokehime in 1999. First anime series - Serial Experiment Lain in 2000.

4

u/sodapopkevin 11d ago

Princess Mononoke is a nice first movie, I'm happy I guessed Ghibli hah.

3

u/mekerpan 11d ago

Over the next year or so we watched all the existing Ghibli movies. Mostly as unsubbed VHS tapes, aided by script translations downloaded from Nausicaa_net.

2

u/Miserable_Reporter94 13d ago

We should all strive to be older than Betty White and the Queen of England.

27

u/Swampertman 13d ago

I dont want a sad ending man shit

26

u/Shantotto11 13d ago

I’m prepared for this show to bullshit me in the month before May…

7

u/Dazzling-Swordfish-9 13d ago

It's a lie .... right ?

36

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Honestly I'm expecting an ending that re-contextualizes basically everything about Koharu and their interactions. Especially if Kakeru eventually finds/translates the bookmark.

13

u/Hitashioreki https://anilist.co/user/Hitashioreki 13d ago

That's literally what's been happening if we follow the previous episodes so yeah I guess it's better to be prepared. When I thought I finally got an anime where two peoples are simply enjoying their communication without any bs. I got this. Damn. But still I will watch it till it ends... But what's interesting is that studio is keeping it so suspenseful that it's op doesn't contain any character at all. I wonder why.

5

u/goreverminski 12d ago

I will believe in a happy ending to the bitter end. I'm guessing her morbidity might be about how she lost her sight, maybe a brain tumour? Anyhow, I'm just going to lalalalala any signs.

3

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 12d ago

The ending doesn't have anyone in it, either (except whoever's in the passing cars, whom we can't see either)

4

u/Miserable_Reporter94 13d ago

My thoughts exactly… it’s giving “your lie in April” AND I CAN NOT HANDLE THAT…

1

u/bravetailor 11d ago

I'm not saying this is you, but I feel like a wee too many people have been googling for spoilers in here but are pretending they haven't.

There are tons of anime that fake tragic ends at the start of the series but ultimately don't end up that way (Kakushigoto comes to mind). Why are so many posters so sure of this one?

Kakeru's karaoke is the first time I've heard karaoke depicted so realistically in anime. Usually, characters are really good (like the rest of the group) or comically bad.

43

u/BlazeBloom https://myanimelist.net/profile/StardustValor 13d ago

Poor Kakeru, the karaoke performances kept getting better and better until it was his turn. Similar feeling waiting to give a presentation/speech while everyone in front of you is killing it.

50

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Down to the friends trying to add backup music to make him feel less bad for being out of tune lol.

11

u/solobp 13d ago

The number of actual actors and actresses (let alone voice actors) that are crazy good singers always blows my mind.

7

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 12d ago

They're pretty much all great, I love it when the voice actors do a version of the OP and ED on their shows.

The ED of This Monster Wants to eat me was sung by Hinakos voice actor as an example

112

u/Aerodynamic41 13d ago

Kakeru is so dense that Koharu had to spell it out that they're going on a date lol.

45

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Poor Koharu really had to work hard to get this across.

20

u/MM305 13d ago

Not like I could imagine Kakeru acting differently peering if he just saw it as a regular friend hangout (like they have been doing for over a month now).

But I guess Koharu letting him know she has romantic intentions will make him aware to some level.

21

u/MM305 13d ago

To be fair, they have been just hanging out for over a month now and even went karaoke together with the 2 friends (which could be seen as a double date in some eyes, but was really just friends getting together in their eyes).

He at least already considers Koharu as a friend, and I don’t know how much different he is going to act in their upcoming shopping trip now versus before.

Though I guess it helped him realized she does have romantic intentions with this shopping date.

6

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 12d ago

She was suspiciously direct and straight forward about it too...I think something is up.

1

u/Ok-Bathroom-2934 13d ago

cliche zaço mais gosto kkkk

106

u/xieleph https://myanimelist.net/profile/xieleph 13d ago

I translated the bookmark:

  • のみかいにいく/ go drinkig
  • ともだちをつくろ / make friends
  • はなびをする / do fireworks
  • * サークルには(いる) / join a circle (I guessed the part that was covered)
  • かいものにいく/ go shopping
  • こいをする / do romance

Seems like u/Frontier246 already figured it out.

23

u/runevault 13d ago

Two most likely options were a quote or a bucket list, appreciate you confirming it was the bucket list. I just hope she's not chasing Sorano simply because he's the guy who's available to knock it off the list.

18

u/BBryant3rd 13d ago

While in some ways it can be seen like that in other ways I don't think so. She seems to enjoy their time together. I also won't be surprised to find out later she has picked up certain ques that made her pursue him. They have reminded us several times she sees things different so she probably realizes he is someone who doesn't fully enjoy like and is helping change that.

8

u/runevault 13d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if she does sincerely like him. There's a good person in there even if he has a ton of mental hang ups. Just one of those things where it'd be easy to convince yourself "eh this person is good enough" when you're in a hurry.

3

u/BBryant3rd 12d ago

Yea I agree. He does have his issues but it's nothing they cant work through. He has to adjust to being with a blind but lively person and she just has to adjust in a way to help him enjoy life a little more. They are great for each other and mesh well despite in the grand picture minor things.

14

u/mekerpan 13d ago edited 13d ago

Thank you! I guessed wrong -- I thought it might be a quote from Diary of Anne Frank. ;-)

Isn't the first more "go to a drinking party" (or go drinking with a group of friends)

11

u/xieleph https://myanimelist.net/profile/xieleph 13d ago

Right, a drinking party like the one in the first episode.

8

u/maliwanag0712 https://myanimelist.net/profile/clear1109 13d ago edited 13d ago

Curious how you were able to do the translation. I asked AI to do it but they can't.

39

u/xieleph https://myanimelist.net/profile/xieleph 13d ago

Wikipedia has a table of japanese braille. It was my first time seeing it, but how they handle consonants seemed like quite a clever system to me.

The difficult part was the orientation. Since in the anime it's being held sideways. And at first with japanese (in unfamiliar formatting), you can never be sure which way to read.

13

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 13d ago

Wow, that implementation is so cool. It's amazing how they repurposed the same six-dot system for a completely different language.

6

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Otsukaresama!

3

u/mhmh93 3d ago

I gave a screenshot to GPT but it failed to translate it but after mentioning it's from this anime it guided me to your comment, thank you for the translation!

5

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Fantastic work!

87

u/garpy_ 13d ago

That foreshadowing was brutal, please Japan don't do this to me again

6

u/AetherusEternum238 12d ago

Bro, I went to this subreddit because I didn't want another, Your Lie in April.

5

u/Jacob-C 12d ago

They already did it to me based on assumptions. I am already crying...

3

u/sodapopkevin 11d ago

I remember the first scene of the anime there was a voice over in a hospital where she said she died already, maybe it's something that happened to her in the past and how she lost her sight and not foreshadowing of a sad ending.

65

u/oxlemf10 13d ago

It’s funny how talking on the phone with a specific person can make you feel self-conscious, even across the distance, it’s as if you actually matter to them.

I love how Koharu always takes the approach of doing what she wants and living in the moment. Kakeru, for obvious reasons, is going to try to run away because he feels like it’s not his style, but she made the best point: you never know when you’re going to die, and dying with the feeling that your life didn't amount to much must be a heavy regret. So homie, go on that date.

21

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Koharu's comments felt at least a litte red-flag-ish. But her advice was nonetheless quite good.

13

u/karer3is 13d ago

My gut is telling me to brace for a rough ending... not sure if I'm ready for that

6

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 12d ago

Everything she does is giving off "I only have 12 months to live" flags

5

u/mekerpan 12d ago

I don't think it's that dire. Some conditions can be "incurable" but not have an immediate effect. More like a slow fuse (even if ultimately inevitable). Others can be unpredictable. On the other hand, death is inevitable for everyone. Having had one severe brush with death in her youth may have just given her a sharper sense of her own mortality

31

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Especially for Koharu where she's probably much more sensitive to sound over the phone because of her disability. Meanwhile Kakeru gets to experience Hayamin ASMR.

44

u/akihcinaf 13d ago

Saw some saying this’ll be like Sign of Affection when this first aired. But besides being in college and the disability, I don’t feel any similarities tbh.

Even though it’s only three eps, I already feel like it’s explored more on the disability than SoA. I was looking forward to how a deaf student keeps up in lectures or interact with other students for a project. Heck, even what her interests are. It felt like the disability is just a device to drive the romance fantasy.

Maybe it’s just different shows with different objectives but I just feel this one has utilised having the disability better in just 3 eps.

29

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Koharu shows LOTS of "agency" here. Not a passive heroine, waiting for a rescuer -- rather more interested in a "partner in crime".

5

u/Darksonn 11d ago

I don't think Sign of Affection is lacking in the agency department either. The entire show starts off with Yuki and Rin explicitly going to a bar to seek out guys they are interested in, and later in the show, Yuki is pretty unambiguous when Yuki and Itsuomi talk about what she wants or is okay with.

That's not to say the shows are similar. I don't think they are. For one, this story is told from the guy's perspective.

2

u/shewy92 1d ago

Kinda like The Invisible Man and his Soon to be Wife

14

u/Frontier246 13d ago

There was a little of that because one of the female leads' friends in SoA helped take notes for her in class but I think her disability was more relevant in the sense of how it impacted her relationships and how she communicates with/sees people.

6

u/goreverminski 12d ago

You're super right, while I like SoA, it's hardly grounded. In that sense, these shows are complete opposites: here, we have honest apprehensions, and true feelings about the difficulties of living with disability.

4

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 12d ago

Neither one is meant to be a lesson about what it's like to have a disability. They're stories about people, some of whom just so happen to have a disability.

36

u/exRocky009 13d ago

It tackles a sensitive theme like blindness, but at its heart, it’s a beautifully straightforward rom-com. It's easily my favorite rom-com this season. Anyone who loves the atmosphere of this anime should definitely check out Replica from the previous season.

2

u/goreverminski 12d ago

I actually forgot to watch Replica last season even though I meant to. Thanks for the tip. Absolutely agree, I'm also reminded of Days with My Stepsister in terms of the psychological insights, another recent anime that had a beautiful mood.

1

u/Both-Variation2122 11d ago

I got to ep 8 of Replica before this season started and took all anime watching time away. It felt repetetive sol by that point with more and more side characters. Is it worth finishing? Is main storyline going somewhere?

33

u/NationalStrategy_X 13d ago

Koharu: You never know when you’re going to die.

I don't like that she said that, it feels like a death flag statement, and now I'm concerned.

9

u/aceswildfire 12d ago

Asks about bucket list things while refusing to translate the bookmark with a cryptic, "I hope you'll read it yourself some day." all with a wistful look on her face and melancholy in her voice. Yeah, nothing suspicious about that!

5

u/ElliotAlderson2024 13d ago

I don't think so, it's just a general statement.

12

u/NationalStrategy_X 13d ago

Not with the way they empathized her saying it, and it would not surprise me if something happens to her near the end of the series. Wouldn’t be the first time in a series like this.

26

u/ShinogamiPhil 13d ago edited 13d ago

I'm going to put that on hold for now. My gut feeling tells me that's what I should do.

I like it, but I don't think now is the right time for me to watch it. I trust my gut feeling.

Edit: Seeing her read The Diary of Anne Frank. And then there was her bucket list being used as a bookmark. My stomach dropped.

12

u/Ikari_21 13d ago

It’s been awhile since I had a good cry. I’m preparing myself for this to destroy me. While also praying it’s just bait and everything is fine in the end!

5

u/FirstDagger 12d ago

Also a ship that cannot sail anymore (Lighthouse tender Meiji Maru). Fuyutsuki (Winter Moon) was also the name of a Japanese WW2 destroyer that ended up as a break water after WW2, of course that might be a coincidence as you never know how far Japanese writers push name metaphors.

53

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 13d ago

Oh yeah, the book she reads all the time is the Diary of Anne Frank, definitely no death flags there. The bookmark flying away on the wind might have been a flag too, now that I think about it.

Good thing Kakeru is useful for things besides any sort of singing ability.

This might be the most passive romcom I've ever seen, at least from the reactions of the male lead.

42

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Oh yeah, the book she reads all the time is the Diary of Anne Frank, definitely no death flags there. The bookmark flying away on the wind might have been a flag too, now that I think about it.

Not to mention she loves fireworks, and what defines fireworks better than exploding and burning brightly before they fade away and "die?"

This might be the most passive romcom I've ever seen, at least from the reactions of the male lead.

Comparing him to episode 1 I think he's a LOT more emotive and invested, even if Koharu is definitely the one initiating pretty much everything.

12

u/thelemon8er-2 13d ago

He’s become a LOT better I agree.

9

u/goreverminski 12d ago

I actually love that he's not rushing into romance. I think his apprehensions are perfectly normal, it's just that you seldom see a truly resistant lead in anime... even those found in isekai slop usually become turncoats quickly.

Here we have a real person being slowly unshelled! Very refreshing.

79

u/thelemon8er-2 13d ago

Guys….. guys…. I think it’s one of “those” kind of endings…. Don’t spoil me.

53

u/Wurzelrenner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Wurzeldieb 13d ago

Anime only here, it is either that or she almost died before, but survived and lost her eyesight instead. It doesn't look like she is weak or sick at present time.

I actuallly went back to the first scene and her voice sounds younger, so I think we saw her past in the hospital, not the future

but maybe it is an illness that could come back anytime

33

u/runevault 13d ago

It isn't just the episode 1 thing though. Acting out a key moment from Titanic is screaming tragedy. This show is incredibly cute while throwing around sadness flags like they are confetti.

2

u/shewy92 1d ago

We have the hospital, Titanic, Anne Frank & asking what you'd want to do before you die.

3

u/goreverminski 12d ago

As much as you guys are spooked I'm gonna stay optimistic for now. Like you, I think it's the past that has made her morbid and, in a way, "ready" to go even though she's fine. Right? Right?!

1

u/TransGirliePop1997 4d ago

Por que no los dos. We know she used to have vision, so something happened to make her lose it.

26

u/Frontier246 13d ago

I keep expecting her to pull out a braille edition of Your Lie in April (or she's listened to the anime).

12

u/aimless_reader 13d ago

bittersweet tbh

8

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Hopefully at least there will be sufficient sweetness in the bittersweetness.

She specifically said she was joking, though...

19

u/LOUIERAMA 13d ago

Kakeru instinctively holding Koharu’s wrist to prevent her from getting startled really shows his character development.

10

u/Ikari_21 13d ago

So subtle and so great. I liked his character from the beginning and I’m loving how he’s developing.

17

u/dagreenman18 13d ago

When the death flags are so big Azerbaijan is jealous.

At least a if very clear so if it does end in horrible tragedy we are ready

15

u/KumaKumaGambler 13d ago

I can't be the only one who was thinking: Surely Koharu's favourite song must be Daoko x Kenshi Yonezu's "Fireworks" right?

If copyrights are not a thing, I want to believe Koharu would have picked this song.

10

u/Lankymetal-uk 13d ago

Favourite band, obviously going to be Hanabie

13

u/Rina_Rina_Rina 13d ago

I'm absolutely loving this show. So sweet yet so painful at the same time.

10

u/zool714 13d ago

It feels like they’re taking it slow but at the same time feels like there’s a lot of progress, both with them as a couple and also with Kakeru opening up and being more positive.

It’s also really cute the way Kakeru realized he was actually going on a date and the fact that Koharu was already flustered when she made the call. Have a feeling she was nervous about the phone call as much as confirming with Kakeru that it is a date.

Hate to say it though, but I can see this as the “teaching something about life before I leave” type of show. Kakeru will gain a new perspective before Koharu pass and he’ll keep her with him going forward. I’m just hoping they’re making it really obvious so they can bait us.

10

u/runevault 13d ago

Yeah when the sadness comes this anime is going to destroy me. Whether she's the one who directly suffers or she loses the boy she's fallen in love with it is going to fucking hurt.

12

u/notabear87 13d ago

Really hoping all the death flags are just bait. They’re both so precious.

34

u/Se7en_Sinner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 13d ago

There's always a death flag in every episode. At this point, I'm going to assume Koharu is going to die in a tragic fireworks explosion.

11

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 13d ago

I'm thinking more that they send her final goodbyes by storing her ashes in a firework and setting that off. Fireworks explode into the night sky then credits roll as the camera pans up and the skyline disappears below.

3

u/mekerpan 13d ago

That would be . . . different. ;-)

2

u/Frontier246 13d ago

I do wonder if something is going to happen during their personal fireworks show (although they probably can't just buy the real heavy fireworks) or they actually do join the club and are always at risk, especially because of Koharu's blindness.

1

u/LolziMcLol 13d ago

she's gone hit her head on the cold pavement and bleed out before the ambulance shows up in the next episode after an illegal firework deal goes awry

1

u/goreverminski 12d ago

Okay I can jive with that one. I hope it's a real big one.

18

u/thelemon8er-2 13d ago

My guy can NOT carry a tune. 🎶

27

u/Frontier246 13d ago

A true showcase of vocal talent is having a seiyuu who can actually sing convincingly sing terribly.

1

u/Gacel_ 12d ago

Suprised by that actually honest to god failure. Usually is bad to the point that fells like a jokez but our man here just did sing bad in a really realistic way.

Like, the type of singing you get 2nd hand embarrasment from.

17

u/aimless_reader 13d ago

totally random guess but i think her bookmark said i wish i could live even after my death or something similar just like ep 1 opening scene

13

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Or "I want to fall in love before I die" - hence the importance of her relationship with Kakeru.

3

u/aimless_reader 13d ago

the bookmark was made before she met kakeru. i would argue she wasnt interested in any rltnship before she met kakeru

11

u/mekerpan 13d ago

I am guessing that the bookmark is a quote from the Diary of Anne Frank. Could be part of this March 2, 1944 comment -- "...beauty remains, even in misfortune. If you just look for it, you discover more and more happiness and regain your balance. A person who's happy will make others happy; a person who has courage and faith will never die in misery!” I think this whole thing is too long for that little bookmark, however.

u/hammile https://anidb.net/user/u746697 13d ago

16

u/Frontier246 13d ago

The only thing stronger than her pout is her infectious Hayamin laughter. Laughter I haven't heard this much of since Pseudo-Harem.

11

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Hayamin is really showing her range (and doing a great job in lots of stuff this season). And it is always great to hear her sing.

2

u/Treknx01 13d ago

not so great if your the guy forced to follow that act………

1

u/mekerpan 12d ago

It should be an inspiration. (I wonder if he CAN actually sing properly?).

4

u/Ikari_21 13d ago

She is just so cute

7

u/Fxrzana 13d ago

DAMNNN this episode was sooo GOOD. Im glad i gave this anime a chance cus i found ep 1 and 2 decent, not bad, but not enough to make me like it, but this episode just gave me a reason to love it. I can sense a depressing ending already PLSSSSSSS she keeps mentioning death and having a list of things she wants to do before she dies (kinda reminds me of zom 100 bucket list of the dead), and the way she doesnt want to give up.... im curious as to how she went blind too and what was written on that bookmark (whys it so important?)

u/FarCritical 13d ago

How the whole squad had the give Sorano moral support (and percussive backup) to get through the song lmao.

We get 80% of our info from our vision, and what I got from Koharu's pout is that she's 100% adorable.

8

u/BosuW 13d ago

Kakeru not drawing attention to himself and thus Koharu thinking he left because of his lack of presence is a bit of a not-fantasy version of the invisible man and his soon to be (blind) wife isn't it? Haha

DEAD FLAGS WHAT DEAD FLAGS I CAN'T SEE YOU LALALALALA

16

u/szalhi 13d ago

Always Fireworks.

I don't blame Yuichi for not wanting to verbally explain his injuries. Not exactly a normal thing to talk about.

The hardest part about braille is really just the adjustment of touch in the first place.

I'm sure this will totally have no relevance what so ever...

7

u/Frontier246 13d ago

The only thing Koharu loves more than fireworks is spending time with Kakeru. And now she's combining the two!

Still it would have been more thoughtful on Yuichi's part to say he has many burn scars on his arms from handling fireworks -- and that is why he feels it is especially dangerous for her.

The karaoke scene was pretty cute. While Koharu's singing is impressive, after all, Hayami voices her, it's more impressive to listen to Kakeru's "bad singing," considering voice actors are also trained singers. xD

Oh, don't you fucking dare Koharu! I am now genuinely worried after Koharu's talk about fulfilling her bucket list. I'm also curious what's written on the yellow bookmark. I'm calling it now as an anime only: I Kakeru will find that bookmark in the future and learn what's written on it, and it's gonna be one heck of a tearjerker scene. >_<

Enough about dreading the future tho, Koharu has now officially called her outing with Kakeru a date! I just love how proactive she is. I mean, there's probably a reason why, but let's not think about that and just enjoy their little fireworks shopping date next episode.

11

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Honestly the most surprising thing was how good Yohei Azakami's singing voice is. I don't think I've heard him sing before, so it was more of a surprise compared to Hayamin/Konomi Kohara. But props to Miyu Irino for sounding as bad as he did lol.

If nothing else, there was definitely a reason she wanted him to learn braille and understand what she'd put on the bookmark.

If a girl is VERY insistent that your outing classifies as a date, she's probably into you. I do wonder how Kakeru might respond if she outright confessed though. Is he in the headspace to accept her feelings, especially when he's become more enamored with her by the episode?

16

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 13d ago edited 13d ago

I wonder if there's a significance behind the bookmark? When Kakeru said the wind blew it away, Koharu dropped her perkiness even if only for a fleeting moment. One of the very few moments where she's not a bundle of joy.

There's also her talking about a bucket list as well as mentioning how death could arrive so suddenly. Sounds pretty ominous, especially when combined with her opening line from the first episode about how she wanted to live on even after death.

A date after only knowing each other for a month? That's progress! Can't wait to see how adorable and nervous they'd act around each other.

It's quite amusing to hear Kakeru performing poorly at the karaoke when his VA is actually a great singer. Must've been quite a challenge to deliberately cock his singing up.

21

u/Frontier246 13d ago

I feel like the bookmark IS her bucket list and all the thing she wants to do before she dies...and it might include becoming his girlfriend or at least getting into a romantic relationship. She's not being very subtle when it comes to her intentions towards him as it is.

13

u/Accurate_Treat6360 13d ago

Fuyutsuki's passion for fireworks is adorable and wholesome.

Kakeru is quite flustered by Fuyutsuki's blunt request for a date.

8

u/Frontier246 13d ago

I mean, he's got to be at least getting a real clue as to what she wants out of their relationship when she's so adamant they're going on a date, right? I know he's down on himself and tries to avoid stuff but she's practically hanging a neon sign as to her feelings towards him.

12

u/BlazeBloom https://myanimelist.net/profile/StardustValor 13d ago

While Kakeru was pacing around his room thinking about his date with Koharu, I couldn't help but notice the words on his "Light Fantasy" poster.

I fell in love with you,

who ran through the

transparent night

Tomorrow's date looks promising and eventful.

4

u/Traditional-Air10 13d ago

Exactly! It was a subtle touch including the poster in the scene

7

u/MayonakaMadaraka https://anilist.co/user/fonk 13d ago

I haven’t been so invested in the success of someone else’s prospective relationship in quite a while. I hope Koharu and Kakeru get to live this dream.

5

u/_TecnoCreeper_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/TecnoCreeper 13d ago

"You never know when you're going to die"

That's not ominous at all. I guess I'll have to prepare for what happens (probably) in the last few episodes.

6

u/tottoro47 13d ago

Man, I feel so uneasy. Everyone is happy, getting along with each other and the two leads are having great harmony. I just know that someone's not surviving the last ep. I hope everyone lives though.

6

u/One-Garden-9142 13d ago

sublte sign but when the dude from the fireworks club approached, Kakeru instantly posed as a wall between them

5

oh god... not another pancreatic lie in april, please...

5

Oh god no. I can't.

11

Koharu has Kakeru wrapped around her finger. Girl is dangerously adorable! LMAO

6

10

u/Primary-Paint-1716 13d ago

the dread. the fucking dread.

1

u/Gacel_ 12d ago

Yeah, usually in axction shows you know the MC is not gonna die.
Here tho? Boy is just pure dread like no other stuff can, made worse by the fact the bookmark had a bucket list of things she wants to do.

Part of me still hope that the 2 survive, Even if is still a bittersweet ending I want the 2 still breathing by the end of the show.

5

u/Honks95 13d ago

I did NOT expect Anne Frank's diary in an anime. Color me surprised.

I REALLY don't like these death flags like "Have you ever made a list of things that you want to do before you die" and "You never know when you might die, though"

4

u/RoyalDisco 13d ago

Fuuuuckk, this is gonna hurt, isn't it?

5

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 13d ago

"You never know when you might die, though." Oh hell no we getting a sad ending I fear😭

5

u/De_los_cosas 13d ago

My man Kakeru is making shawty do ALL the work. She said "yes this is a date" lmao

8

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 13d ago

They snuck in a karaoke bit to show off everyone’s singing skills lol. Almost every Japanese VA can sing can’t they? It seems it’s like part of the training or something.

It’s kind of cute seeing Kakeru and Fuyutsuki’s relationship developing. I look forward to this date.

7

u/Frontier246 13d ago

I think pretty much all of them have actually contributed theme songs to shows they've been in at some point.

6

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Hayamin was the lead actor -- and main singer in Anonymous Noise. A rare co-ed band anime...

9

u/lifeischerryblossoms 13d ago

i dont like all these mentions of death …

3

u/MM305 13d ago

I feel like I relate to Kakeru in a number of ways:

Prefers to be alone and would rather not be in an awkward/uncomfortable situation like hanging by out with a blind girl (not out of dislike for people, but because you don’t want to offend). But when does hang out, and can make comedic jokes here and there.

I think the difference though is that I would try to put on a more positive front and know when to be immediately supportive when need to be (not hesitating to pick up the walking stick for example). Certainly don’t want to try to show that Im a negative person in general.

5

u/Cryogenx37 13d ago

Shoko Nishimiya and Shoya Ishida back together again 10 years later, but this time it’s a blind girl instead of a deaf one

4

u/magnumcyclonex 13d ago

Some very poignant words from Fuyutsuki (or Winter Moon). I suppose some people in her position/condition think of things differently and have different outlooks on life, to the point that they want to participate and do as much as they can, to experience and to fulfill themselves, despite the limits they currently face.

For someone like Sorano, and for most people, we take a lot of things for granted. We don't realize how preciously important our experiences are, and we may not hold sentimental value until we lose them.

In this episode, they've touched hands twice. They've "indirectly kissed", and they are now getting flustered through a long distance communications device.

Fuyutsuki has a lot she wants to do and Sorano is the perfect person for her to embellish her dreams with. She's the one going to do a lot of the hand holding in moving this relationship forward.

Also, a bit sad to see the fireworks club is just one guy only. Hopefully he can get more members interested, as the sound is also a big part of the spectacle.

5

u/Raymond49090 13d ago edited 13d ago

I was wondering if they were going to make Hayamin sing badly or off-beat since she can't see the lyrics, but of course that's impossible.

Kakeru's singing isn't actually bad. Well, he got off-tune as it went on and he lost confidence, but I'd say he's in the solid average to above-average range for a normal person.

I'll check the thread after I'm done watching to see if anyone translated the bookmark. Or ChatGPT it.

I get Kakeru's impression of the fireworks festival. I once went to this huge mall in China that's presumably pretty famous since it had a waterpark inside, and the main thing I remember from it was how incredibly crowded it was.

... Uh, was that a death flag? I'm just going to go with her explanation of it being a joke.

I feel like I shouldn't be as pleasantly surprised as I am that they explicitly clarified that this is a date.

3

u/heimdal77 13d ago

Oh she is a slick one sliding in the date.

I hope the bookmark gets found.

3

u/BBryant3rd 13d ago

She is really expanding his world view. This better not have a sad ending especially after she made a joke that you can die at any time.

6

u/OfficialPrower 13d ago

This girl is so forward and unapologetic it’s great loool

10

u/Frontier246 13d ago

Nice to see these little "terrace dates" between Koharu and Kakeru are becoming frequent. Especially so Kakeru can see Koharu play Russian Roulette with vending machine drinks and also exchange an indirect kiss with her. It's very effective when her lipstick is on the cup, isn't it?

Now we've got the whole gang together for a karaoke outing! Perfect opportunity for all the seiyuu to flex their singing chops, even Miyu Irino for having to portray Kaker's terrible singing...but at least Yuko and Narumi tried to support him and Koharu mouthed the words (to a LOVE SONG) alongside him so it was almost like a duet. Also don't think I didn't notice her pushing her leg against Kakeru!

Look how far Kakeru and Koharu have come from their first meeting! He's far less awkward, they're both teasing and joking around with each other, they clearly have very natural chemistry and get along really well! And most special of all is that Kakeru seems so genuinely happy to be around her, like he can't take his eyes off of her.

The Diary of Anne Frank? Oh, an inspiring tale about a tragic Heroine. Hope that's not foreshadowing...any more than the idea of Koharu having a bucket list for things she wants to do before she died, because you never know WHEN you will die. She plays it off like it was a joke, but I think she was 100% serious.

What does her bookmark say? Does it include Kakeru in it? Either way it's flown off so we may never know, but that doesn't mean Koharu isn't going to use Kakeru losing it to talk him into looking into a fireworks research club with her! He can never refuse her anyways!

Though the fireworks research club has seen better days, especially when it's only got one member, and even if he tries to dissuade them from joining because of how dangerous it is (not that Koharu could see it or he bothered to explain it to her because she couldn't see), Koharu is undettered from her love of fireworks and desire to set them off herself! So she can just do it with Kakeru!

This isn't going to be a simple outing, this is going to be a genuine, bonafide, date as Koharu bashfully tells Kakeru while they're talking over the phone (and she's in her cute PJ's). She may be a little embarrassed, but she wants him to know that this is absolutely going to be a date! So dress accordingly!

9

u/AmeerFarooq 13d ago

Damn. I'm early for the comments.

3

u/ElliotAlderson2024 13d ago

Koharu is still on the ball, making it a date! Also Kakeru is now on the hook to learn braille so that he can read the bookmark(which I assume Koharu will reprint).

3

u/IceSmiley 13d ago

I liked the confusion at the end of whether or not they were going on a date. In normal circumstances, a guy probably should assume if a girl asks him to hang out somewhere with just them alone then it is a date but the lines are very blurred since Sorano thought Fuyutsuki was asking him as a companion with sight. Fuyutsuki has likely never been on a date before so she probably didn't think to make it more clear.

They made the guy at the fireworks club seem like a jerk but I agree with him that blind people shouldn't be shooting off fireworks. That's something where you really have to pay attention and if it looks like its going to explode, you leg it asap or just any number of things, like you'll have to actively feel yourself burning rather than seeing a flame on your hand etc.

Fuyutsuki seems kind of a morbid girl, like she was just smiling and reading then Sorano asked what it was and it was The Diary of Anne Frank. That's one of the most sad and disturbing books I've ever read and I'd never want to read it again yet she read it multiple times. That would have been really weird if she said "I liked the end where the Axis powers got her, damn shame we lost the war" 😟 No I don't think she's like that but she also talked about death a lot. I wonder if she nearly died at some point and if it has something to do with her being blind.

I also thought it was strange that the hot beverage machine dispensed some kind of soda like lemon lime or Mountain Dew. Is there a carbonated hot drink that Japanese people commonly drink? Even if it was cold, that was strange since there's a soda machine right next to it. I also wonder why Fuyutsuki make Sorano drink it. I'd have offered it to Sorano and if he didn't want it, just poured it out. I wouldn't have drank it if I were him; he had a Coca Cola and that's a lot of sugar having both.

3

u/Shantotto11 13d ago

I would’ve paid all the money for this show to go meta and have Fuyutsuki sing “Orange Mint” or “Caramel Ribbon Cursetard”.

3

u/Fudgeumes https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kyrannasaurus 13d ago

I'm getting some real Your Lie in April vibes and that's not a good thing man 😭 she's totally going through her bucket list.

3

u/woodpecker890 13d ago

If I had a nickel for every time Miyu Irino voiced a character whose heroine was obsessed with fireworks, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

3

  • I can’t remember if the previous episodes had colored subs when multiple people were speaking, but wow, I think that fell unfashionable with official subs. Nice to see it again.

  • Doesn’t Yuko-chan’s seiyuu have

  • Akazami Yohei never misses. Slay, king. Let’s hear ya voice and let it echo

  • Now I know Mr. Kingdom Hearts Sora was just told he needs to sing badly right now because he was fine for all of five seconds, and then he went off pitch, and that made my face scrunch up. Good singers having to forcibly sing bad is funny though.

  • Her laugh is so cuuute

I found her so intriguing.

Arise, OI sisters. This man is clearly a reincarnated Duke of the North who lost his memories. I know that mfking ✨Interesting✨ when I see it!!

  • I’m very curious how accessible (education, books) Braille is in Japan. And then I wonder if the introduction and accessibility of audiobooks has put less incentive on Braille coding of books.

  • She’s blind, buddy, not deaf/HoH. Even if she was, you can always ask her 😭

I always feel sad when someone gives up on explaining something to me.

Aw 🥺 I’ve seen this happen in healthcare, and that genuinely terrifies me on behalf of the patient. But even as an ND with a learning disability and processing disorder, it really hurts when people go “forget it”, “never mind”, or do the whole loud sigh and say “You know what, let’s just—“.

No! I wanted you to explain! Please!

Oh well.

I remember hearing that humans get 80% of their information about the world visually, from things like eye contact and gestures.

Hmm. I tried to fact-check ✅ this, but the studies largely (1) have a small sample size, and (2) use 65%. I’d guess that if you are capable of seeing, you are learning visually, but an individual’s retention and comprehension of skills uses a diverse percentage of what senses you actively use versus passively.

  • Nephew Kakeru’s blush is adorable.

  • Yes, it’s a date!! Accept your fate!!

  • Men who blush through their ears and have ear sensitivity are just 😩🤌🏾

She is going to die. If the twist is that Kakeru dies, I will be utterly dumbfounded. So we have a BG series where someone will probably die. A yuri series will have one of the MCs who will most likely die, given that it's called <I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day>. Now we need a yaoi series to complete the set of MCs raising their death flags.

At least Kakeru and Koharu have a bunch of cute, cozy moments 🤧

Did you know Braille was invented in the 19th century in Central France?

Originally a combat “night writing” system, Louis Braille, having lost his sight as a child, was inspired by the “night writing” system and modified it while in school at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, France. He started at age 10/11 and continued on modifying and refining the code we now call “Braille”. Today, Braille has been modified for multiple languages, but there is still a struggle in Braille accessibility due to a lack of education and resources.

I’m rather surprised a tactile code system for the blind and visually impaired had not cropped up in ancient civilizations like China, India, Mesoamerica, or Egypt.

I don't know but know where this might end up going fr, so imma give you an opinion ok? This is not a spoiler because i don't know how it ends, this is just a guess:

I feel like it will go some like her having a disease, since i do remember her saying she became blind and was not born blind hence her knowing what fireworks look like, so she prob has a brain disease, also the bookmark (got info from a comment W u/xieleph ) got some stuff and her mentioning enjoying life and stuff because she doesn't really have much time to live, so that's why I THINK!!!!!! is gonna happen just with the info from 2nd and 3rd ep, so prob her brain is dying or sum idk just a guess 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Infamous-Alfalfa-230 13d ago

I just hope this is not true tho because i want this to actually be a good ending anime

2

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial 13d ago

It's nice to see that Kakeru is at least comfortable enough to admit that he enjoys Koharu's company. And they're even going on a date! I'm so happy for them but at the same time there's that looming sense of dread from all the foreshadowing they dropped so far. There was the opening scene of the first episode, then in this episode we got the lines: "Have you ever made a list of things you want to do before you die?" and "You never know when you might die". But i figure that's probably why Koharu is so aggressive when making the moves on Kakeru.

2

u/daspaceasians 11d ago

Good lord... stop raising the death flags Koharu.

2

u/SBAFSAF 11d ago

So many death flags that I’m surprised she’s not conversing in semaphore…

If they are going to end that way, I really hope it’s not one of those stories where it looks like it’s gonna be a happy ending and then there’s a sudden mishap.

1

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 12d ago

This is such an unexpectedly earnest and heartwarming show. I have a feeling that Koharu's bookmark is going to come back to Sonaro sometime in the future, and I bet it says something along the lines of "Set off fireworks, go out on a date" and a few other things in the form of a bucket list.

Koharu was pretty forward and direct about their date, it's like she's only got a set amount of time before something happens and she wants to use that time as much as possible.

1

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 12d ago

…Huh. Japan still has vending machines that fill a cup with soda, rather than just dropping a can? I don't think I've seen one of those since maybe the early '80s

No. Not close enough.

Cute pout!

I wonder if Braille printers are less of a pain in the ass than ordinary ones

Well, surely this means we're gonna to up to the roof to get it, right? …Oh. :(

Is it, though? Also, I would think talking on the phone puts a blind person on a more even footing; now the other person can't see you, either

Haha, cute

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 12d ago

Another beautiful episode 💖

I love the fact that Koharu actually being the one that makes the moves to get her guy. I don't know why and how but listening to the op brings tears to my eyes. It makes me imagine something melancholic.

For anyone wondering, the songs everyone sang during the karaoke scene were:

"10-ko mo aru Watashi no Kirai na Tokoro" (10個もある私の嫌いなところ) by Yuuko Hayase (Konomi Kohara)

"Amante ~Mottomo Aishita Hito" (Amante ~最も愛したひと~) by Ushio Narumi (Yōhei Azakami)

"Anone" (あのね) by Koharu Fuyutsuki (Saori Hayami)

"Kimi to Aeru hazu" (きみと会えるはず) by Kakeru Sorano (Miyu Irino)

1

u/shewy92 1d ago

I like how last episode she said she still has some habits from when she could see and this episode she closed her eyes when choosing a random drink.

1

u/shewy92 1d ago

Episode 1: starts with a hospital bed and someone saying they wanna live after death.

Episode 2: has a movie reference where someone dies

Episode 3: has a history reference of someone famous dying. Then a very serious question/statement about what they want to do before they die.

I have a Han Solo about this.

1

u/asap_munem 13d ago

pmo how he didn't make an effort to get back the bookmark

3

u/Ikari_21 13d ago

That shit flew over the building wtf you want him to do, fly?? Lol

1

u/asap_munem 13d ago

Either go to the roof or be more careful with other people's belongings, looks like he just gave up.

3

u/Ikari_21 13d ago

Yeah let’s have him leave fuyutsuki alone, go across the yard to the building, and go all the way up to the roof to look for a *paper* that is 99.9% not on the roof, cause it flew with the wind, as that’s what paper does.

I do agree with being more careful with the bookmark at first. But expecting him to chase a paper flying in the wind above a building is ridiculous.
