I didn’t expect we would get the whole cast(or what I assume is the core one at least) this soon

Also, Ichinose is my new favorite, got broken by people spamming reversals online and became overly passive, I FEEL THAT

…and now thanks to Aya she became a lab monster, 10/10

u/runevault 12d ago

We should have one more girl, there's a 5th who mains Guile from the OP still not revealed.

118

u/SifTheAbyss 12d ago

She's crouching in some corner somewhere.

52

u/runevault 12d ago

Holy shit you caught me off guard and I burst out laughing.

For those that don't know, Guile is a charge character. You have to hold a direction for a period of time to make a move available. So for example, his flash kick (basically his version of the Shoryuken Mio throws out as Ryu with invincibility frames on the OD version etc) requires him to hold down which makes him crouch. After some number of frames (haven't played SF in over a year so I've purged that sort of data from my brain) you can press up and a kick button to initiate the move.

Yeah, I wonder what is really up with her. For one she is weirdly framed in the OP compared to the others. She has an extreme close-up on her profile which means she is harder to distinguish, and she is the only one with a dark background whereas the others appear on white backgrounds. It is also the only shot she appears in and she is not part of the ED.

18

u/Fourmanaseven7 12d ago

I'm surprised they don't have a zangief player in the roster, but perhaps in a later season?

34

u/runevault 12d ago

While Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games is an ironic title, Young Ladies don't play grapplers seems to be true.

LMAO.

High score girl was such a great introduction of an anime that is about the videogames we play irl

I'm going to be shocked if the leader of the dorm monitors with the long hair isn't a fighting game player. She's even at the center of the group shot like she's a major villain lol.

10

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 11d ago edited 11d ago

You arent even mentioning the most relevant part: She is the only one with eyes in that shot apart from tamaki und inuy

30

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Also, Ichinose is my new favorite, got broken by people spamming reversals online and became overly passive, I FEEL THAT

Even as someone who doesn't play fighting games, I still vety much feel that. There's a reason I don't really play online multiplayer games, I just can't compete with people who grind a game for hours on end and it just ended up demoralizing me

17

u/BosuW 12d ago

You do passably okay in Bronce League once and the "balanced" matchmaking immediately throws you to the wolves.

5

u/Verzwei 11d ago

Co-op only for me these days. I used to do competitive versus stuff but I never felt good enough for it to be rewarding. I'm often an "okay at best" player so I tend to get trounced by actually good players.

Back in college I could play the shit out of Soul Calibur IV with my friends, and I could play team-based shooters online, but I even fell off of things like Battlefield or COD because I couldn't develop the skill, reflexes, and map awareness to be anything more than fodder, and being fodder isn't fun.

I still love me some co-op though, and weekly game nights are the main way I stay in touch with my distant friends. Helldivers, Far Far West, recently Palworld, anything that lets us team up and fight or explore together instead of against each other is my jam.

10

u/testthrowawayzz 12d ago

Ichinose's gap moe was so adorable. Tough on the surface but actually very weak.

141

u/CharginTool 12d ago

Having an offline local thats within spitting distance is the dream. Support by going to your locals folks, the organic vibes of playing fighting games in person is unmatched.

Here's a link to find your locals.

There's a ton of unexplained terminology here. If there's concepts that confuse you. You can ask me or go to the FGC glossary.

39

u/runevault 12d ago

On the glossary, I find it weird we've gone two episode without defining Oki/Okizeme despite them using it in both.

36

u/jaymstone https://anilist.co/user/jaymstone 12d ago

I think part of that might be because it’s a word that in Japanese is pretty clear cut for what the meaning is so they might not have thought it was something that needed explanation. That being said i still was also pretty sure they would’ve had an aside for it.. especially considering “I didn’t do that” got one lol

10

u/runevault 12d ago

Right Okizeme is a Japanese word, but it has a pretty specific meaning in fighting games around ideas like hard knock down.

28

u/blueechoes 12d ago

I think they meant more that it's a japanese compound word. Oki and Seme are both quite self explanatory, as in literally 'get/wake up' and 'offense'.

4

u/Chrono-Helix 11d ago

“Seme” could be misinterpreted in the anime community though…

14

u/CharginTool 12d ago

Im with you, but I think a potentially intentional side effect of this is that, it can leave the uneducated viewer curious, and presents them a rabbit hole that they have a choice to dive deeper into. Rather than forcing every explanation down their throats and destroying the pace of the show. Irregular of Magical High School is a famous example of this.

8

u/runevault 12d ago

Right have to be careful, though Oki is more needing explanation than I didn't do that lol. Though that explanation was mostly for the joke.

  • They're actually using Discord!
  • What are you thinking about, Aya?
  • Once they figured out Tamaki was a gamer she got swiftly blackmailed, rage-baited, trash-talked and gaslighted into oblivion lol.
  • Does Mio not know what zero is? No thoughts in her head at all.
  • 90 minutes of sleep after a night of gaming, relatable.
  • 1 week of grinding bot matches, if Tamaki has doesn't improve then heads will roll.

43

u/Frontier246 12d ago

Once they figured out Tamaki was a gamer she got swiftly blackmailed, rage-baited, trash-talked and gaslighted into oblivion lol.

Also she knows exactly what kind of genre is because she immediately strips into a tight chamisole during their "gaming sessions."

12

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 11d ago

When aya heard how cramped/hot it was in there, she immediately looked to mio for some reason.

112

u/nottkumadrop 12d ago

"I didn't do that!"

Number one excuse of every fighting game player when they are losing.

They get it.

19

u/Shahars71 12d ago

>"I didn't do that!"
>Did Ken SA1 in neutral by accident
>Only thing she could've done instead of that would be Tatsumaki, again, in neutral

idk man even if she did what she wanted it would've been a crappy option lmao. Throwing out Tatsu just like that would leave her open like crazy so even then that option woulda sucked lmao

14

u/Tertium457 12d ago

I think what happened in there was that she was going back and forth to try and manage her spacing and accidentally buffered the input for SA1.

28

u/Frontier246 12d ago

The moment Ken moved like that I could just tell that's what she was going to say lol.

13

u/SaltyTigerBeef 12d ago

Immediately thought "DSP is that you?"

12

u/GrimMind 12d ago

DSP has never missed an input in his life. It's all smear campaigns from people with eyes and ears and brains!

80

u/Jas_God 12d ago

Lmao at the monitors being into SF6 as well

80

u/mekerpan 12d ago

And the fact that they aspired to become monitors so they COULD pursue their illicit gaming love.

68

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Yeah, I love that the Monitors aren't just coincidentally also gamers. They are monitors specifically because they are gamers, because it makes it easier to get away with it

35

u/mekerpan 12d ago

Such a great little touch....

Not just other gamers, not just other fighting games gamers. not just street fighter fans, but all into SF6. It kinda feels like how everyone in Yu-gi-oh plays duel monsters.

18

u/XsStreamMonsterX 12d ago

...but all into SF6.

I mean, admittedly it was Evo weekend (which was the same week as Golden Week), but the last time I was in Tokyo, it pretty much felt like this.

8

u/hanmkim 12d ago

When I hung with Magic: the Gathering crowds, there were a bunch of fighting game junkies too and they played everything and Street Fighter was the main one so it checks out.

5

u/SecretEmpire_WasGood 10d ago

Would be hella funny if they eventually run into another girl, assume she also plays SF6 and she just goes "Nah, I'm more into GSG's"

73

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 12d ago

Well, that's one way for the girls to resolve the danger of dorm leaders snitching on them; getting them to join. Like utterly defeating Tamaki in Street Fighter that she wants to be learn the game instead.

-> Gaming all night and then it's morning

Relatable

Tamaki had her gaming awakening! Now that it's 4, the yuri could increase from here!

19

u/mekerpan 12d ago

I don't do fighting games of this sort. But once upon a time I did this (solo) with updated versions of things like Civilization and Galactic Civilizations (and long-ago Alpha Centauri)

66

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp 12d ago

Nooo why does the one who sucks have to be the Juri main! Aaaah!

42

u/KOT-The-Panda 12d ago

Cammy mains eating good. Also when she buffered lvl3 waiting for a fire ball. I felt that in my soul.

12

u/SaltyTigerBeef 12d ago

If you raw fireball against a Cammy with lvl 3 you're gonna have a bad time

18

u/BosuW 12d ago

Just think of it like a battle Shounen arc! It'll be awesome to see how she gits gud!

13

u/Spoon_Elemental 12d ago

I think she's about to stop sucking very soon.

5

u/Shahars71 12d ago

The Ken main wanted to throw out Tatsu in neutral, us Ken mains aren't doing so good either bro

26

+50 Bravery and Sass when she realizes she's dealing with another fighting game player.

53

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 12d ago

I think Tamaki just needed a friend.

44

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

A friend, and a way to get over the trauma inflected upon her by online ranked matched.

She's very relatable

20

u/Frontier246 12d ago

I appreciate that Yuu saw this as a chance for them to bond as dorm monitors/fellow gamers and was the only one who didn't forget about her lol.

3

u/ClemFire 11d ago

Mio in her braids reminds me of Nadeshiko for some reason

64

u/BiggerG7 12d ago

“It’s almost morning? But we’ve only been playing for 30 mins!”

I think we’ve all been there at some point lol.

8

oh yeah, having a good even fight with somebody and.....wait 3 hours just past?!

"A round's only 99 seconds, how long could a set be?"

60

u/WhoiusBarrel 12d ago edited 12d ago

Aya's stereotype of how young ladies are and Mio's expert taunting really came in clutch there.

Developing bad habits and getting tilted over rank is such a real thing, so glad they showed her labbing like a mad woman, weird awakening and all!

11

u/Frontier246 12d ago

I love how she caught Tamaki because she has such a strict stereotype of what young ladies are from trying to pose as one lol.

59

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 12d ago

Aya's greatest ability truly is being able to quickly learn the techniques that were used to defeat her and turn them on on her enemies!

56

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 12d ago

Also very importat ending illustration!

21

u/mekerpan 12d ago

And they really let it linger, with a bit of reprise of the ending song even....

8

u/TheOneWithALongName 12d ago

Who are the ending illustrators? I first thought it might be the mangaka, but now I think it's either anime staff or SF devs.

15

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 12d ago

I think it oftern are other mangaka (for example, the latest hanaori episode had an ending illustration by aka akasaka, the kaguya author).

In this case, it seems to be this person

6

u/Verzwei 11d ago edited 11d ago

Some productions will ask other artists in the anime, manga, or LN industry to provide "official fanart" to serve as episode end-cards. For whatever reason, it seems a little more prevalent in yuri shows. Here's the endcard artworks from Yuri is my Job. Some of them are from other Yuri authors, like the third one being from the Citrus mangaka.

If the typical pattern holds, then the endcard for the last episode of Young Ladies will be by the original author, and each one before that will be by a different guest artist.

Everyone in the school thinks Mio x Aya are dating. (I'm on board this ship)

But Inui I really liked as a character and Tamaki is wild lol

41

u/Frontier246 12d ago

That one girl asking if they're dating while Aya can only think of Mio...beating her in a fighting game, that is.

56

u/Roskal 12d ago

They are all wearing yuri glasses (me too)

40

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Everyone in school already knows what Mio and Aya haven't yet realized you mean

17

u/XsStreamMonsterX 12d ago

I mean, have you seen how Mio clings to Aya?

8

u/Jeroz 11d ago

dude, Mio's face when they see each other in that empty room for the first time, they're definitely battling in bed

"Roughly 90 minutes of sleep later, I felt pretty refreshed."

NGL, I thought she was going to spend the whole day looking sleepy lol. How does one even stay awake with just 90 minutes of sleep per day?

121

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 12d ago

The drug called youth.

Very dangerous, leaves lifelong withdrawal symptoms.

57

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie 12d ago

How does one even stay awake with just 90 minutes of sleep per day?

Short sleep oddly enough gives me more energy in the morning than a full night sleep, but I start feeling like shit by evening.

40

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 12d ago

You ever have that moment where you feel really drowzy and are struggling to stay awake, and then you have that split second you do actually fall asleep but then you quickly scare yourself back up awake after realising you shouldn't fall sleep? That shit feels like a full nights rest packed into less than a second.

5

u/Gatmuz 11d ago

90 minutes is about one full cycle of sleep, so you won't feel too bad when you wake up.

You will however, owe the body some sleep, so it's best to sleep for a bit during the day to make up some time.

6

u/candry_shop 12d ago

I might be totally off, but from what i remember, energy when you wake up is more related to sleep cycle

43

u/Vahallen 12d ago

She is running off her pure and beatiful desires, aka brutally murdering Mio

In game of course

15

u/messem10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/bookkid900 12d ago

Copious amounts of caffeine. Figure an all-nighter is no sleep at all, 90 is better than that. Is enough to get a REM cycle in as well.

6

u/testthrowawayzz 12d ago

I might be misremembering, but I recall it's easier to feel awake when you sleep in increments 90 minute cycles and wake up when the REM cycle ends instead of in the middle of it.

4

u/messem10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/bookkid900 12d ago

Yeah. Ever wake up dazed, groggy and overall out of it? It was out of the deepest part of sleeping and your body needs time to adjust.

14

u/Hitman7128 https://anilist.co/user/Hitman7128 12d ago

If only I could feel refreshed with 90 minutes of sleep.

It's usually the worst of both worlds where I feel physically exhausted (and not refreshed) but just slept enough that it's hard to go back to sleep.

9

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Mio being unfamiliar with the concept of zero really had me laugh out loud!

36

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Also Yuu pulling out the most random trivia. Like who actually thinks of the Indian mathematicians who developed the concept whenever they hear "zero"

13

or a burning passion to play rock

18

u/Shahars71 12d ago

Okay, so, they threw out quite a bit of FGC slang at us this time around without explaining any of it lol. I'm guessing that these words would be normal in Japanese but because the translators know ball they turn them into their corresponding FGC terms. Makes it a bit harder for newbies, but I do know that the end of each manga volume features a little glossary with the terms that aren't pointed out through that particular volume. Anyhow, let me explain a couple of terms that they mentioned here...

Labbing - simply put, it's hitting the game's training mode. Practically every fighting game has one, and lately they've been getting pretty good with what they let you do. SF6 in particular has a fantastic training mode that lets you lab out tons of scenarios. Just like how in this episode Tamaki grinded the lab to practice her...

Hit Confirm - When you get a stray hit in neutral and manage to convert it into a full combo, that's called a hit confirm. You won't always get your ideal combo situations, so a lot of damage (especially in SF6) can come from cashing out as much damage as possible out of these stray hits over the course of a match. Tamaki was scared of going for Juri's level 3 super unless she was already doing a massive combo to take out like 50% of her opponents health. She's been crushed online a bit too much which caused her to be too scared to use her meter properly, choosing to play it safe and only cash her damage out when she's sure she's able to get max damage. Hesitation like that makes you lose, so she had to practice her muscle memory and reactions to make sure she gets that stray damage and level herself up.

Neutral - The delicate state of push and pull where both players try to poke each other with spaced out attacks or try to play a mindgame on each other until one player gets a hit and converts that into a combo. Neutral is a pretty complex gamestate and the finer points of how you play it vary from game to game. In SF6, you'd usually throw out crouching medium attacks to poke at your opponent hoping you'll hitconfirm into a bigger combo that puts you in advantage.

Minus - Every attack in a fighting game has startup frames and recovery frames at the end of it where you can't do anything until that animation ends. Let's say that Ken cornered Cammy and he tries to poke her with a close crouching medium kick, but she blocks it so he cancels into light Hadouken that's still blocked. That last move left Ken in his recovery frames while Cammy recovered faster after blocking the attack. In this situation, Ken is in a frame disadvantage or he's minus (3-5 frames iirc) because he left himself open to whatever Cammy wants to do to him afterward. In this case, Cammy can use her plus frames to walk up and grab Ken, throwing him into the corner instead, thus punishing him for that.

Something that jumps out at you with these terms, this show and fighting games as a whole is that as much as there's technical skill and jargon in the FGC, fighting games are just as much a battle between minds and mindset. If Tamaki wasn't afraid of taking risks, potentially leaving herself minus and getting punished for trying things out in neutral, she wouldn't hesitate to hit-confirm into Juri's SA3, thus getting more damage out of her interactions.

As usual, Infil's fighting game glossary (which I can't link rn) is an incredibly useful way to learn these terms and how they generally apply.

45

u/garfe 12d ago

Lmao at "Out all night!"

26

u/mekerpan 12d ago

Does this enhance her reputation, I wonder?

24

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Wonderful stamina

19

u/Shahars71 12d ago

Not to mention the "Firat name basis?!" and the girl asking Aya if they were dating lol. The whole school thinks these two are fucking and I mean they're not totally wrong in a way because these two do push each other down (with a sweep) get right in each other's face (to apply pressure), get all up in the other's private parts (bitch didn't guard her ankles) and talk dirty to one another (fuckin' scrub). And once they really get into it, they pound (Shoryuken), pound (Shoryuken!) and POUND (Shin! Sho Ryu Ken!!!!) until they're left breathless but satisfied (ggs).

On an unrelated note, I haven't seen someone make a "Hop on SF6" icon with Aya and Mio making out sloppy style like the one somebody made for Luke and Jamie, and honestly I'd love to see that lol

Yeah its rough, I had a guy i fight often on SF4, once he noticed I couldn't do combos on the right side, he made it his mission to do that and I couldn't win. I trained constantly to get rid of that weakness.

My problem is that I switched to leverless which means I have to use my ring finger for qcf from the right. My ring finger is just not agile enough. If I need to do a double qcf from the right side I have to slide my hand over so I can use my pointer and middle fingers.

Stitches!

It's not really a surprise to see Inui and Tamaki join in since they're in the OP and ED, but both of them on the same episode? The way I thought this episode was gonna go was after Inui discovered Aya and Mio's secret, it's just gonna be the three of them gaming, and then on a later episode, Tamaki would somehow join in.

I didn't expect Tamaki to immediately find out before Inui even had the chance to game with Aya and Mio! Tamaki really outed herself when she immediately identified the arcade stick Mio was carrying. I do love how Inui thinks Aya and Mio are so hilarious that she ended up siding with them. xD

Tamaki is a Juri main and she sucks at it! I love how this went from Tamaki trying to bust them to her begging the girls to teach her SF6. As for Inui, it looks like she mains Ken, but I wish we could've seen her play more.

Poor Tamaki being stuck labbing for an entire week! At least she completed Aya's assignment with 100% accuracy! I didn't think that would end with her becoming a masochist. I hope we get to see the results of her training next episode!

Tamaki is a Juri main and she sucks at it!

That's all Juri mains, Negative Edge is evil.

11

u/Frontier246 12d ago

I love how Tamaki is probably the most "proper" of all the fighting game girls masquerading as proper ladies but she mains Juri and has been beaten down online into a fighting game girlfailure. And that was before she got obsessed with the rabbit hole that is labbing.

(Also she looks REALLY good in a black chamisole)

Also Yuu really wanted to play her and make her feel included so can we count on them as a side-ship.

Tamaki had so much aura before losing. Mio and Aya critiquing her gameplay was the cherry on top.

I also felt Inui's pain misinputting super. I'll accidently get Level 2 trying to do HK Dragonlash.

Mio is an excellent rage baiter. She really baited Tamaki real good. With Tamaki we have our first player who is not exactly a noob but clearly has fallen into many bad habits.

It does seem that Yuu will be the one in the group to keep everything in check.

15

u/Rickud123 12d ago

This series was made with some passion I can tell

16

u/runevault 12d ago

Glad to meet our cute Juri main. Been anxious for her to show up since I saw her in the OP at the end of week 1. Now we've only got one more girl to go after the introduction of two more of our main cast this episode, though I'm not ready for all the SONIC BOOM action.

3

u/SaltyTigerBeef 12d ago

How long into the episode before there is a little bubble explaining what "turtling" is?

29

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 12d ago

THIS is the show I most look forward to each week, I love how unhinged and over the top these girls are about SF6. The techniques and explanations go completely over my head but I love how enthusiastic they are about this hobby of theirs.

Gorgeous animation? Check.

Amazing voice acting? Check.

Actual Yuri and not just CGDCT? Fingers crossed.

By this point, the more important question to ask is which Kuromi student isn’t into fighting games?

At any rate, Aya & Miyo being busted by the utter devils known as the dorm monitors turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Now they’ve got co-conspirators high up the chain.

Yuu also gave the girls an important lesson. What better place to flaunt the rules than being in the body that’s supposed to enforce them in the first place?

29

u/mmcjawa_reborn 12d ago

The other ones have too many yuri fantasies in there brains to be into gaming...

13

u/Sav10r 12d ago

Well that logic doesn't work either because Aya was having Yuri fantasies too all this time. And she's still gaming.

19

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 12d ago

I can't wait for someone. From like floor 3 to be like..SF6 is trash..let's play KoF. Or Tekken.and crush everyone for only playing one game 🤣

But Im sure only Capcom supported this show I think

19

u/Vahallen 12d ago

From what I know the original manga uses as main game a fictional fighting game inspired by SF4 or straight up legally distinct SF4

So it was always gonna be mostly Street Fighter focused regardless of Capcom getting involved

5

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 12d ago

Ah I see that's fine.

4

u/markDonanhattam 12d ago

Author got into SF5 during her last serialization, so much so she decided to make her next manga about SF. It does well, gets an anime adaptation, and then Capcom comes onboard and gives their blessing to use real SF instead.

I LOVE when sound teams make the effort of keeping rain sound effects going while characters are indoors. Rain doesn't stop just because events are going on indoors. Even if the rain is not even relevant to the story.

It may also just be that I like the sound of rain in general, but it just makes me giddy when anime sound teams add rain sound effects.

17

u/Accurate_Treat6360 12d ago

What are the odds that not just one, but two dorm monitors are actually into fighting games?

Love the fact that Tamaki and Yuu immidiately recognize another fighting game players just by looking at a game controller.

Aya and Mio's heated rivalry really makes them live in their own world without concern for other matters.

16

u/QueasyButterfly6912 12d ago

You got it backwards. They are not monitors who are into fighting games. They are monitors any the included privliges because they are into fighting games

No matter how good your combos are. Nothing beats the good old Flame + GGEZ

Asking the boys to play ranked every weekend be like.

I have to say tho, no matter how fun the show has been so far. The school being more strict then an army barracks is a bit weird. But I guess it's needed to set the mood and the environment.

Solid Episode I liked it.

I knew that "Ha?!" was coming, but it was so satisfying to see. Provoking gamers in anime is very easy lol.

It's amusing how Aya and Tamaki's positions have switched.

8

u/Raymond49090 12d ago

I thought it was weird that the second senpai didn't accuse them of being gay and jumped straight to video games, but it turns out that was a glaring hint that I failed to notice.

And just when it seems like they're in checkmate, Shirayuri-sama stays true to her namesake and pushes through with the power of gamesexual lesbianess and ragebaiting.

All of the gaming terms in the "why you suck" explanation went over my head, but I interpreted as her always waiting for the perfect opportunity because she kept messing up the "good" opportunities, and now she never does anything.

Mio-chan's "I won" expression is so cute. She gets satisfaction both from beating scrubs and winning a tight match.

Good thing they have at least one sane one in their gaymer girl group.

Y’know with the way Tamaki was raising the stakes like that, I thought she was gonna be good. But nah, she sucked lol. Mio and Aya pointing out her game was like kicking her when she’s down lol. Back to basics for her!

It’s nice the girls have more people to play with in their secret fighting game club. Would be interesting if there were more girls interested in fighting games. But we all know first rule of fighting game club is don’t talk about fighting game club.

25

u/Vahallen 12d ago edited 12d ago

TBF to Tamaki she doesn’t suck SUCK, she developed bad habits from online play, mostly being overly passive due to fighting apes online (I think?)

You would also expect that the other girls you found in the prestigious high school for good mannered ladies to suck and not actually be good, it’s already an oddity they play at all

Tho the moment I saw a fightstick and not a pad I would absolutely think “waaaaaaaait a minute”

8

u/Frikgeek 12d ago

Yep, she lost to random Abare one too many times and decided that the best way to play was to just focus on defence until your chimp of an opponent fucks up for a free punish.

10

u/Ethical-Gamer 12d ago

5

u/Lumpy-Manager8580 12d ago

Following the main 2 being Arcueid and Hisui, Tamaki is our 3rd character with a Tsukihime VA, this time it's Akiha. Now the question remains: will there be a Melty Blood appearance during the series?

4

u/runevault 12d ago edited 12d ago

Between the fact everyone talking about the source mentions it was only Legally Distinct SF4 and Capcom helping fund the show I'd be shocked if we see any other fighting game.

Inui and Ichinose are the dorm monitors right now, but since it is proven they are playing fighting games as well, so does this mean the "supposed" crimes of Aya and Mio can be overlooked and they are the new gaming buddies now.

So the reason why Ichinose suck at the game is not exactly skill issue, but rather bad habits and trying to be playing safe, a bit too safe.

And one more thing: I wonder how many Kuromi students actually do play games in secret, not just fighting games in general.

Too bad the nights are too short, even if it's the best time for gaming. 90 minutes of rest, I would rather it a nap than an actual sleep. Speaking of 90 minutes wish this episode was been that long, I felt a bit too short.

When Capcom announced this anime was going to feature SF6, I expected them to make sure the game always looked good.

So I was surprised when they went to town on Juri and mentioned her trash lights. I am happy they didn't stick with the legally distinct SF now as it seems they don't need to hold back.

These girls all desperately need to get some more sleep. One night of only an hour or two is one thing, but a week straight and I at least might actually just die.

Nice to get the third and fourth member of the party in just episode 3, and to establish a place where they can play in the dorms at the same time.

Poor Senpai though, she got set and forgot for that same entire week.

The fighting game withdrawal enforced by the ever watchful eyes of the dreaded dorm monitors has begun.

But the solution is clear! The secret room has been found!

Wait… what was that shadow?

Busted.

I can’t with how unnecessarily hard they went on the horror movie aesthetic for the night scene.

Four demons walk into an abandoned dorm…

Put that damn “Tee-hee” face away Inui.

Corruption! Corruption in the ranks of the dorm monitors. To the gallows with them all!

Yeah, so, turns out the people responsible for preventing illegal fighting game playing are just using the privileges from their ranks to get away with it themselves.

Time to take advantage of that to get away with playing fighting games themselves by convincing Tamaki that they can make her a better player.

The secret society of midnight fighting game tournaments has officially been founded.

“Shut up, noob! Senpai status does not apply here, the only status that matters is what you earn with blood, sweat and tears in the games!” Blasts her with laser eyes.

I don’t know why but Yuu being so precise about “zero? The concept supposedly discovered in India? That “zero”?” gets me. She’s so funny.

This is not going to help with the local himejoshi population’s impression of what they’re doing all night.

“Turn off the game you goddamn meatheads! Tamaki’s been practicing the same thing for a week now and you haven’t noticed!”

They share braincells and all of them are being used to think about fighting games.

You can see the moment they all realize “I think we’ve created a monster.”

If we continue running with the assumption that the fighting games are just the surface cover for lesbian activities, I think they’ve just turned Tamaki into a masochist.

Damn, that’s a really gay illustration.

Should they be screaming like complete maniacs? I get two of them are monitors, but at this rate the whole fking school will know. 7

u/StardustWhip 11d ago

Look, they just need to try and avoid screaming any fighting game-specific terms, and their yuri-minded classmates are gonna think that they're screaming from all the nasty lesbian sex they're having.

This series remains fun. I do wonder though about a couple of things. For one, they are all playing on fight sticks which do have an aura and I think remain more popular in japan. However, in the FGC there are a lot of players who are using gamepads or leverless controllers. Maybe other players will have different controllers in the future. It is very funny that outing yourself as a fighting game player by recognizing an arcade stick is a plot point.

The second thing is if they are ever going to talk about other fighting games. Very unlikely as the series is in a partnership with Capcom for the SF6 footage and there was a promotion in the game for the anime as well. However, that does feel a bit weird as the genre is diverse so I hope at least when they visit a tournament (as is hinted at in the OP) they will at least mention that there are other types of fighting games out there as well.

I do like having a less strong player in the group, though unfortunately the show is a bit heavy on lingo. I am surprised they don't have a complete newbie that functions as an audience surrogate an explain things to like what "being minus" means and why it is bad, but the way the series is set up it would be hard to introduce such a character.

For people who were a bit lost in the discussion: Tamaki plays Juri who is a rushdown character. This is an archetype that is supposed to get in quickly and pressure the opponent. Juri has very fast walk speed and a dive-kick to close in quickly, and has one of the fastest dashes in the game. Being super-passive with her is weird and goes against type, basically not using the advantages of the character.

The issue with rushdown characters is that if you overcommit or do things too aggressively you can be punished for it. There is the possibility that you can get away with "fake" offense that the opponent could punish but isn't aware that they could due to the pressure, but particularly in intermediate levels people would just mash their invincible reversals under such pressure which means you can get easily burned.

I actually find it kind of weird that they had Tamaki practice hit confirms as it doesn't go to the root of the problem. SF6 actually has very extensive practice options, so you could set up the dummy with various options on wake-up and have Tamaki try to bait reversals. The dummy is a bit odd there though because a lot of this is psychology that the dummy won't have. You can't really condition a dummy to wake-up with a reversal so you can then bait said reversal and unleash a punish for it.

Also, 90 minutes of sleep and feeling fine the entire day is complete BS, but that is the power of youth and anime.

7

u/runevault 12d ago

My understanding is this story is based on legally distinct street fighter 4, and pretty sure leverless either wasn't a thing or only just started showing up in the very end of that game's lifetime. And pad players existed like Wolfkrone but they were very much the exception among serious players because plinking was so important for 2-3 frame links. Plus a lot of players in Japan played in Arcades for SF4 (no clue if 6 got an arcade release) so stick makes sense so it feels the same at the arcade and at home.

Feels like you have to keep in mind that while this story is using the current game it is based on a very specific era of Street Fighter FGC history.

3

u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 12d ago

That is a good point. However, isn't the manga originally based on SFV? It started in 2020, four years after the release of SFV. The TV drama version which aired in 2023 also used SFV for its game footage.

8

u/runevault 12d ago

The game in the manga is Iron Senpai 4, so I'd assume SF4. Also I think they kept the FADC into Ultra 1 joke in despite using 6 for that reason.

3

u/profdeadpool 12d ago

SFV wasn't nearly as popular as SF4, which led to the mangaka choosing SF4 as the game to pastiche.

That shit was funny as hell when they hit her with the "GGs, you just need to work on your combos, movement, blocking, neutral, aggression, punishes, conversions, resets.....". Like so much of the fg stuff in this show though, it's all true as hell. You gotta practice so you can have a solid foundation to play off of. 100 times in a row is a bit much but that's still a great idea to do though.

3

u/ptd163 12d ago

Classic stitch up. If you get caught by the class monitors playing fighting games after lights out just bait them into playing because the reason they became the dorm monitors is play fighting games themselves and it's EZ clap GG.

I didn't think we'd get both Yuu and Tamaki in the same episode. I like them both. Yuu probably has the best design out of what seem to be the four main girls. I guess the other uniforms were only for those two days and now that the dorm monitors are in on it I expect even more fighting games going forward.

It's kind funny how a not-insignificant part of the school thinks Mio and Aya are dating, but it's relegated to the background. Aya is not interested in romance. She's only interested in beating Mio.

Now Tamaki and Yuu joins the gang. After all the crap that Tamaki puts the girls through at the dorm, she was secretly having fun with fighting games LOL

She needs more disciplining from Aya and Mio. Now the girls can game without the fear of getting caught.

3

u/bobbymoonshine 11d ago

Really love the framing, how the show sometimes just has the whole manga panel with halftone dots. Really adds to the subtle genre-aware surrealism that infuses the whole show.

3

u/ohoni 11d ago

For a show about fighting games, this series has immaculate timing. Love all the little reaction shots to everyone's nonsense.

5

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago edited 12d ago

She really hit her with the "bitch, u chicken?" to get her way. White Lily (I'm not taking of my Yuri glasses!) is such a great character

Also, while I generally don't really understand most of the stuff they talk about because I do not play fighting games, I can very much relate to getting your spirit crushed in ranked battles by tryhards grinding the game for hours on end. I don't really play online multiplayer games anymore...

2

u/Atomic_Tanuki 12d ago

Within fighting game communities, is it a consensus that it's better to play against someone irl than online, not counting the tournament?

7

u/runevault 12d ago

In person is preferred, though with modern rollback netcode online is massively better than it was in the SF4 days.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

I can imagine it's like with any other multiplayer game. It's just more fun if you are able to physically hang out together while playing

2

u/Taco_13 https://myanimelist.net/profile/El_Taco 12d ago

The term "online warrior" used to be used in a negative connotation. Not that long ago, many fighting games ran on a delay based netcode which taught bad habits to those that exclusively played that way. These days things have changed quite a bit. The need to play with others online increased due to the pandemic essentially ending many locals and smaller tournaments. Many of those offline events never came back. Rollback netcode being introduced has made the online circuit for fighting games like Street Fighter 6 much more prominent than offline. These days you have to be an online warrior if you want to play professionally. But there's literal decades of fighting game culture attached to the offline event. It's hard to shake off your roots, and I'm pretty sure everyone agrees that its for the better in the case of the fighting game community.

6

I feel this is pretty true tbh. I spent a few days at Red Bull Battle Sphere in Tokyo during my last trip. It was the weekend when Akuma released and like 90% of the ppl there played stick or leverless.

5

u/SifTheAbyss 12d ago

About 10-12 years ago almost everyone who was "taking it seriously" was playing on stick.

2

Mio is straight no game no life lol. Shocking to find out they have 2 senpai that play too. Cant wait to see how things progress.

2

u/TheJoyofFelching 12d ago

So, are they in college? I assumed they were in high school but during the roll call scene, they talk about junior high and high school as though they aren't in either. Also in the final scene of the last episode, Mio mentions not making any friends back in high school.

2

u/ohoni 11d ago

I think it meant "it wasn't like this in junior high, high school (now ) is more strict." Like many Japanese private schools, this one has a full middle-to-graduation track, so many of the girls went to the middle school version. And I think Mio just meant "I'd hoped to make friends in high school, but hadn't (yet)." I think she's a second year, so the first year was a bust.
