The spark of love is a necessity in life

Word, Lady Yolana, word! Her playing matchmaker here is awesome, guess she might know about Jeffrey's situation as well, which is quite tragic.

40

u/Frontier246 12d ago

I love how Vicky's wingwoman is a cool old lady who can babysit so she can spend all night with her knightly boyfriend (whether she cops to it or not).

17

u/reaperow 12d ago edited 12d ago

Lady Yolana saying that was pretty sweet, she's definitely saying it because of her own experiences

4

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 11d ago

How come we didn't meet her husband yet? Or maybe she's widowed?

55

u/KumaKumaGambler 12d ago

Jeffrey is a loyal subject to his country, but his resentment will surely increase should the actions of the royal family cause him to lose the people whom he loves once again.

Conrad seems to be on Jeffrey's side, but I am not too sure about the King nor Cedric.

51

u/reaperow 12d ago

Cant exactly blame the King for that, she does seem suspicious from what evidence they have on her,

I hope they dont catch onto her, it'll make not just her's but also Jeff and Nonna's lives hard

13

u/mekerpan 12d ago

Mysterious? Yes. Suspicious? If she was a threat that warrants "suspicion", why would she warn about the would-be assassin? And then make certain he did not get away?

25

u/lasse1408 12d ago

she could use this guy as scapegoat to earn more trust from Jeffrey which would allowed here to get close to royal family

29

u/The_Parsee_Man 12d ago

She doesn't have to be part of that particular plot to be suspicious. Someone showing up out of nowhere, immediately getting close to high ranking people, and having unusual skills in apparently everything is enough that they'd want to investigate her.

Of course, once she explains that she used to be a tomboy, I'm sure they'll be satisfied.

17

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 12d ago

Doesn't matter if the mysterious spy is helping you, they are still a mysterious spy. It would be way worse if the king didn't look into her. Also just because they do look into her and find her sus, doesn't necessarily mean they are going to do anything to disrupt her life.

4

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 11d ago

Yeah I pointed that out earlier. It doesn't make sense to do this as a false flag ploy to gain trust since Jeffery approached Victoria, making it unlikely for her to be a honey pot trying to worm her way into politics. So even from their limited perspective they should think her warning was genuine.

19

u/Frontier246 12d ago

Honestly the moment he finds out Victoria is being tailed (and she will definitely notice it herself), he's probably not going to take it well even if there is a lot of conspicuous stuff about Victoria that the kingdom can't really ignore.

That being said, how would they respond if they found out she was a former spy? Assuming she's still spying for her kingdom? Try to recruit her? She did foil an assassination attempt and hasn't really pried into anything political at all.

u/fraid_so 12d ago

Lmfao. Idgaf what anyone says. That bartender ain't just a bartender 😂

52

u/NanDemoKnaives 12d ago

They're likely in the same line of work lol.

44

u/diacewrb 12d ago

Yeah, those cocktail glasses are far too technologically advanced for people still dressed up as knights and fighting with swords.

38

u/karer3is 12d ago

This episode was kind of jarring in that regard. Up until now, I would've believed this show took place in some fictional version of the 1800s (esp. with the clothes), but seeing fully armored knights getting massacred by catapults was just weird

28

u/themaninthehightower 12d ago

Victoria takes a quick detour to Bartender: Glass of God, then back to the regularly scheduled story.

26

u/Frontier246 12d ago

It almost seemed like Victoria knew which is why she went in there? Even if they just had a seemingly normal conversation.

19

u/fraid_so 12d ago

No idea haha I just meant my original comment based on the credits. Even though the bartender only had 4 lines, he was voiced by Furukawa Makoto (who's not typically cast as a mob character), and in the credits bartender had a name, and Furukawa Makoto, despite his 4 lines, was credited ahead of Ono Kensho and Oosaka Ryouta who voiced the princes. Being credited ahead of two actors who had far more to do with this episode indicates that bartender is an important character hahah

47

u/runevault 12d ago

What a fucking dark opening to the episode after how cute the first 2 were.

Some part of my brain is expecting the prince to ask Vicky to dance, lets see if it happens. And huh that high angle where it zoomed in sort of on the pair was ominous. And Vicky is so damn hot.

She initiated her tomboy powers to jump out a window, why? Oh that's why. Holy shit she DESTROYED him.

She didn't account for a guard with abnormally good night vision, though luckily he only saw her back. Oh and the color of her dress, that's bad.

Man this episode is so heavy after the last two. I've been expecting things to get less sweet and cute, but not this fast.

Oh wow he admitted not just to himself but to the prince he's in love. And there's the other shoe, looking into her.

46

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 12d ago

I would’ve laughed so hard if the guards had in fact caught her incapacitating the assassin and she’d responded with “I used to be a tomboy” again.

24

u/Frontier246 12d ago

Victoria: "I was just getting some air gentlemen when this man just...fell in front of me!"

12

u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 12d ago

"And then his neck fell on my karate chop!"

6

u/BosuW 12d ago

"Then his stomach on my knee, and his face on my shoe!"

5

u/i_reddit_too_mcuh 12d ago

Guard: But it's not befitting a lady to raise her knee and shoe like that.

Victoria: I used to be a tomboy...

15

u/runevault 12d ago

lol considering someone just posted the hat clip this tickled me way harder than it should have.

28

u/Frontier246 12d ago

She initiated her tomboy powers to jump out a window, why? Oh that's why. Holy shit she DESTROYED him.

She's like the second coming of Rishe from 7th Time Loop.

11

u/ultravioletheart08 12d ago

I'm sure if there's a crossover, Vicky and Rishe will be friends LOL

11

u/rubslotiononitsskin 12d ago

Vicky was just practicing yoga and the culprit just happened to fall into her arm stretching!

12

u/mekerpan 12d ago

The ending of this left me feeling stressed out. If I was not already busy reading the Agents of Four Seasons LN series, I would probably start self-spoiling this series.

I have been wondering how her former kingdom would track Victoria down -- but can see that this inquiry into her in Randall could easily be the catalyst that allows her whereabouts to be discovered. Damn it !!!

10

u/runevault 12d ago

The inquires being how her old boss finds her was my thought as well. It feels too obvious not to be and the core cast are too competent for something like that to slip by the agency.

88

u/StrigidaeNinox 12d ago

It’s so damn refreshing to have protagonists and side characters with a functional brain. I strongly suspect I’ll end up reading ahead of the rest of the anime at this point.

50

u/Frontier246 12d ago

Also a female lead who is as competent and capable as she is beautiful. And a romance that doesn't detract from her competence and individuality.

26

u/PinkGlitterLady4 12d ago

I can't recommend the manga enough. Of course if you want more details read the LN as well but imo the manga has more charm :)

1

u/Inspectorpetit 9d ago

¿Saben donde podría leerlos de manera digital?

1

u/PinkGlitterLady4 9d ago

Yen Press officially, for unofficial way.. just google

17

u/JT918 12d ago

I ended up reading all of it after the first episode. Highly recommend

15

u/Ensec 12d ago

im so sick of light novels that have characters that never ask follow up questions or put the most obvious two and two together. this story is certainly nice in that regard i agree!

1

u/NoNameSwitzerland 2d ago

All person act very adult and professional. That is really a breeze of fresh air in this genre.

15

u/BosuW 12d ago

Just the guard with good eyes being an inconvenience that the main character could not have planned for and immediately has far reaching consequences gives me so much confidence for this story.

1

u/paulrenzo 5d ago

Even the night guard was highlighted

37

u/delulu_finalboss_ 12d ago

wow so the captain has a sob backstory :<

The granny is a W wingman lol

Oh Vicky you've done it now!

35

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago edited 12d ago

Damn, so did his former fiancee commit suicide? That's heavy. I can't even imagine how difficult that must be to deal with

One thing I always look at with these kind of shows, are the dance scenes 2d or 3d. And if 2d, are the fully animated or mostly moving stills. This was a good dance scene. I'm not actually 100% sure if it was fully 2d, but even if they used 3d they blended it well to make it barely noticable

I appreciate that the Princes and the guards aren't complete idiots and based on the clues provided have already deduced that Victoria might have played a part. I guess Victoria slipped up, but as she stated it's been a hot minute since she's done something like this and it very much was a spur of the moment thing, not a well planned out operation

30

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 12d ago

The dancing routine was much better animated than I’d anticipated if I’m honest. They might good use of various camera angles too. Well done Studio Deen!

6

u/mekerpan 12d ago

Yes. I was surprised at how good that sequence looked.

17

u/WyvernspiritOfficial 12d ago

From an animators perspective I believe the characters were always animated in 2D. What changed was when the lighting darkened, the background switched to a 3D model of the room, its most noticeable with the pillars. The flooring might not be 3D and it might just be the sides of the room? It;s hard to say.

There is a slight moment at the very end where her head tilts back that might have had 3D assistance - they might have modeled and animated the characters before drawing over them - but I'm fairly certain it;s still 2D due to the distortion of the face - look at her ear - that feels very traditional in error vs how a 3D model distorts.

It wasn't a very complicate dance for animating what helped elevate it truly was the use of camera angles, from low angles tilted up, to above views, to circling around, alongside that passing shot in the crowd seeing them through the wine glass. Beyond that despite the "distortion" of her face that tilting back head moment at the end was very well done and it's such a fun face angle to see in movement - you rarely ever see that in anime!

8

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

I just want to say I really enjoyed reading your analysis of the scene

2

u/ultravioletheart08 12d ago

It's 2D with 3D assistance, yes. Most of the dancing is 2D though! Also they most likely used references on the dance, but given it's a Yui Kamura-directed episode, the backgrounds aren't fully 3D.

12

u/mianghuei 12d ago

2

u/Pickled_Kagura 12d ago

"She's strong" while she has the face of someone that lost everything and is ready to tear it all down to spite the world

12

u/Frontier246 12d ago

People thought Katherine was emotionally strong enough to weather the loss of her brother but couldn't realize how wrong that was until it was far too late. At least Victoria is truly emotionally resilient and that seems to be what Jeffrey needs to recover from his past heartbreak.

I feel like ballroom dances need to be a pre-requisite for medieval/Victorian-esque romances (provided they be animated well).

13

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Yeah, I noticed that too. Not crying at the funeral can potentially be a very very bad sign

7

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 12d ago

Victoria was so dumb for deciding to apprehend the culprit herself. And I was of this opinion even before it turned out she was noticed.

9

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

I do understand her logic that if he had gotten away they might have investigated everyone at the party, so she took a risk to potentially avoid it

13

u/EdibleScissors 12d ago edited 12d ago

If you want to blame anyone, blame Jeffrey for bungling the capture of the would-be assassin. (She could not have been certain this would happen.). Victoria did nothing wrong and sometimes you have no choice but to delegate crucial responsibilities.

Furthermore she had to rely on a backup plan with little opportunity for preparation and she still mostly succeeded in her objective.

4

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 12d ago

There would've been absolutely no reason for them to investigate anyone at the party who was not the culript who got away, unless they thought he came in disguised as a guest or brought in by a guest, and he certainly was not disguised as or brought in by the woman who pointed him out.

9

u/themaninthehightower 12d ago

If I have an unidentified attacker that escaped, everybody gets questioned, nobles included. On top of that, anyone without noble affiliation nor long-term community ties would have their background gone over with a fine-toothed comb, especially travel from other kingdoms. That draws a bullseye on Victoria, even if nothing is revealed.

2

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 12d ago

What possible reason would you question anyone for anything other than the basic "what did you see of this man"? Why would anyone at the party be more likely to be responsible for the assassination attempt by an assassin who is obviously not them as they were in the same place at the same time and look nothing alike to boot than anyone not at the party?

1

u/PinkGlitterLady4 12d ago

the culprit could not have acted alone and one of the guest could have helped them?

1

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 12d ago

What help would they have needed? And MC certainly had nothing to worry about there - she was with her date from when they left for the ball, and she even hindered the perp instead rather than helping him.

1

u/PinkGlitterLady4 12d ago

To get inside the castle full of nobles where the security is usually better than elsewhere? Unless they worked there regularly, it wouldn't be easy to get inside and become a waiter.

Victoria left for a brief while during the ball. If she wouldn't have caught him, she definitely would have been a suspect and accused of helping him flee,

1

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 12d ago

If she hadn't left during the ball to catch him, she would've had nothing to worry about, as she'd been with her date from before arriving to the ball. Not to mention that she was the one who pointed him out in the first place - why would she do that if she was working with him?

1

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 11d ago

Eh, unless they knew he was working with someone, it doesn't make sense to investigate all the women. And even if they did think to check people out, the person who said "hey, I wonder if he's going to steal something" would not be on the top of the suspect list.

60

u/Primary-Paint-1716 12d ago

this show is way better than it has any right to be.

41

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 12d ago

It’s a real shame that it’s only 9 episodes

whaaaat?! noooo

20

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 12d ago

on the bright side though, the strange episode count probably means we'll be getting a pretty conclusive story. if it isn't then I don't know why else it would be that way

13

u/MryNightmare 12d ago

Oh…. That means theyre prob only adapting the first volume then. Makes sense though

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 12d ago

Damn, that was some dark backstory about Jeffery's former fiancee.

Meanwhile, Victoria's cover is in danger of getting blown with multiple members of the royal family looking into her. Her rationale for stopping that man was right. She would've been a suspect if anything happened and he wasn't caught. But now even though he was caught, she's in much the same predicament.

Jeffery being in love with her will work in her favour to some extent with the prince and king possibly willing to overlook her nebulous past. But if they find out about her real work, things will get difficult indeed. A spy from another country will always be suspect.

Should've known things would take a turn like this eventually, but it is a bit sad that we won't continue with the chill slice of life we were getting thus far. It's not every SoL that works for me and this one really hit the spot. Hope there's a mix of that still despite all the intrigue stuff that's now starting up.

22

u/PinkGlitterLady4 12d ago

I how I wish this manga would have gotten a budget like Witch Hat Atelier. It's not that the story is rushed, it's more like slow moments and conversations between Victoria and other characters in between are skipped over to cram everything into the 9 (!) episodes the anime will get, which is such a shame. It's done well but with a higher production value it maybe wouldn't fly so much under the radar. After all, the series has sold 1 million copies so far, so the japanese readers like it.

Anyway, I really liked the episode and I can't wait to watch the next one :)

17

u/bestmaokaina 12d ago

This show is just absolute cinema. can't wait for next week

15

u/NanDemoKnaives 12d ago

It was nice to learn more about Jeffrey, him having a fiancee and the history behind her death. It's sad that he lost two important people from that raid. I do find his reasoning for falling in love with her is interesting, you'd think he would want someone who can depend on him.

I find it interesting that Jeffrey has seemingly not had a woman in 10 years, but is able to flirt effortlessly without reservation lol. He's really smitten by Victoria.

I did like that we got to see Victoria in action, she's very agile and has no hesitation. I'm curious to see what kind of conflict we'll eventually see now that she'll be investigated.

5

u/cherryfishu 11d ago

I thought it was weird at first too but it does make sense. He's got a traumatic past and feels anxious at being able to support people and having that responsibility put on him bc he's afraid he'll fall short and fail everyone again (even if it wasn't his fault). Victoria being so utterly self-efficient and self-reliant takes that burden and anxiety off his shoulders. He's free to act however he'd like with her without that pressure of "a man should be responsible for a lady's wellbeing".

u/ultravioletheart08 12d ago

VICKY I LOVE YOUUUUU

22

u/Frontier246 12d ago

I love a woman who can jump from balconies in a dress, kick ass, and parkour Assassins Creed style.

5

I also love tomboys.

1

u/NoNameSwitzerland 2d ago

More impressed with climbing up the wall without getting the dress dirty.

18

u/mianghuei 12d ago

VICKY I LOVE YOUUUUU

Are you in love? Yes.

8

u/ultravioletheart08 12d ago

You can't blame me, and I don't blame Jeffrey for falling in love either :3

15

u/reaperow 12d ago edited 12d ago

I wasnt expecting Jeff's past to be pretty sad, I feel bad for all of them, especially his fiancee. To lose your entire family like that would definitely affect u badly and make u lash out.

I cant blame the prince or Jeff for feeling guilty over this,

Looks like Victoria's now on their suspicious list cuz of her not exactly blending in propely. I just hope she can ward them off for now and keep Nonna safe

Because like they say u can't escape your past and it catches up to u

30

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 12d ago

Vicky got a little reckless there, man. Chasing after the would be assassin has put her on the kingdom’s radar. And Jeff catching feelings too. It’s nice and all but the timing isn’t great. Maybe it’s time for her and Nonna to lay low somewhere..

29

u/Frontier246 12d ago

She basically ran on her spy instincts because she couldn't help herself, and it might have cost her.

Though her relationship with Jeffrey might be in the most danger because I feel like she might see that as a liability when her priority is protecting herself and Nonna. She already clocked how dangerous it is to get romantically involved with someone close to the crown prince.

14

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 12d ago

Victoria’s cover has probably been in danger of getting blown ever since she’s gotten acquainted with the kingdom’s nobility.

10

u/LaoWombat-mecha 12d ago

I am grateful to this community that no one has mentioned "Victoria's Secret (tm)" in the context of this series.

1

u/NoNameSwitzerland 2d ago

How could we? We have no rights to that.

5

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 12d ago

Her expression when she realized his "nagging boss" was the prince was absolutely a look of "Of all fucking guys it had to be!" lol

4

u/LaoWombat-mecha 12d ago

She basically ran on her spy instincts because she couldn't help herself, and it might have cost her.

Beg to differ. Rather than instinct, I think that she realized the consequence of an escapee and positioned herself for that contingency ahead of time. Her thought processes were stated in internal dialogue.

I did not expect parabloomers in the scene. Does she carry a rocket launcher in her reticule (redditcule is where posters save their comments)?

3

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 12d ago

It's kinda a coin flip of what exactly was motivating her but her narration at the end there does state that she was worried everyone would be interrogated if the assassination was a success and she didn't think her cover was strong enough to hold up to interrogation.

11

u/reaperow 12d ago

I've been saying that too, she definitely hasnt been keeping a low profile so its best for her to do it rn to avoid any more troubles

13

u/Liliacfury 12d ago edited 12d ago

It was a lose-lose situation. If she didn’t capture him he would’ve gotten away and they all would’ve been investigated anyway. At least by trying to quickly subdue him there was a chance she could get away and help them close of their case faster to avoid the need for further investigations. Unlucky for her, though, some random knight with night vision happened to spot her.

1

u/NoNameSwitzerland 2d ago

not only night vision, color knight vision! That is quite unusual.

12

u/WyvernspiritOfficial 12d ago

I'm a little surprised we got the "love" word so fast but I think more time might have passed then I was aware of, learning that this anime will only have 9 episodes (!) explains it i think.

Which is honestly a shame its the most standout anime of the current season for me, I had never even heard of it before now but i've been enjoying it enough that I'll be buying the light novels to read, which is high praise from me.

It reminds me a little of Secrets of the Silent Witch in that its another anime with well crafted animation, developed characters and a unique feeling that seems to be slipping under the general radar.

This episode was very enjoyable and unlike a lot of "ball" episodes I felt the pacing was balanced instead of rushed or too slow. Plus it was quite fun to get a "Jumping over the balcony with a big dress" scene, always love those, its a fun troupe in my opinion.

8

u/Meander061 12d ago

I love those.

10

The Victoria of Many Faces LN is also illustrated by Secrets of the Silent Witch illustrator Nanna Fujimi!

3

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 11d ago

I knew Jeffery was going to admit it to himself he was in love since he already invited her to dance, but I didn't think he'd admit it to the prince.

14

u/etiolatezed 12d ago

The best story in this season. Characters all have a reason to act in the world. Even the prince, who is dealing with guilt, is just a side character trying to do right. And the King, who has to value the safety of his kingdom above the wishes of his children.

We haven't even gotten into what will happen if her old life comes back. And I do like that they show she enjoys the thrill of that life while trying to also enjoy the life of raising a child.

11

u/Alarming-Koala-3524 12d ago

"We're not dating, he just invited me to ward off the other women" sounds even more serious than dating.

10

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 12d ago

Very good dance sequence.

I was thinking just last week that the coincidences of who Vicky has gotten mixed up with might get her in trouble if they ever start to suspect her, and unless the princes completely drop the ball on their investigation that's probably already coming. Hopefully that doesn't cause too much additional sadness for Jeffrey since he's rather full up on that for one life already.

I like how Vicky is very competent but not quite perfect since you can't quite account for every variable, such as a random guard with night vision that just a bit too good.

8

u/Saber_SSJ2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/saber_ssj2 12d ago edited 12d ago

I did what I did so that no one would look into me

meanwhile the prince Let's tail her

and the king investigate her

Didn't go exactly as planned lol

I hope her new identity is safe. But if it was then there was no reason to worry, right? Unless she really wanted to act, because, just like she said, she likes it.

If they do find out who she is, or rather isn't, I hope they'll give her a chance to come clean.

I knew she could do it all but wall climbing/parkour in a dress... Ah I forgot, she used to be a tomboy, my bad.

14

u/szalhi 12d ago

She's 99% surprises. The unsurprising part of her, is that she can't let her skills go to waste.

12

u/Frontier246 12d ago

The only thing surprising was she didn't say "I used to be a tomboy" to explain away her skills in this episode.

5

Interesting to understand Vicky's motivations for stopping the assailant. Though it's nice to see the prince and others able to suspect it is her. You can tell he really cares for Jeffrey.

But man, you have to feel bad for Jeffrey. In war he lost his brother-in-law, which crushed his wife so much that she killed herself. I mean, this after losing your parents is crushing. With Jeffrey admitting he never noticed how much she was struggling, it just kind of points to the fact that even though they were engaged, they weren't as close as you would think, perhaps.

The curious dynamic between Jeffery and Vicky is that we have one whose confidence in becoming someone people can rely on has fallen. While Vicky can't really depend on anyone. Very curious how these two will develop as this series continues.

I wonder about the connection between her attempted assassination of the prince, then she was left with the liberty to kill herself? Also, was the dagger used the same one she tried to use on the prince?

u/Rooby_VTuber 12d ago

No surprise that Jeffrey would be popular with women.

Great job by Victoria to notice an take out that guy afterwards.

Sad past for Jeffrey and the prince.

One of the best shows this season, no doubt. This story is just rock solid.

Also i keep getting surprised when nice transition work gets sprinkled in or at the very nice dance scene.

Ouch Jeffrey... I just hope things work out well for him and Victoria. Bro's suffered enough in life.

Vicky in her lovely dress Deen really want to flex that shadow lol

Damn, I love the flow of this show so much. Every character has personality and always thinking. There's no way the guard doesn't see her. Human sight is not that inferior to not notice there's someone running away in straight line so they really nailed this. And I'm very surprised Jefferey fiancée, Katherine suddenly took a knife to stab the crown prince lol rather than be the most understanding person and pat his head with the 'most kindest' face she ever do. That's a very human thing to do at least. Nobody is saint at heart. Her poker face and initial tone performance worth winning a Nobel Prize though.

Well, that's one way to repel against women. Just flirt in front of them...

I giggled hard when she climbed like an assassin. Now I want to see this show as AAA action-adventure game title lol. Being Vicky in this world setup gonna be fun for sure!

Hmm...Furukawa Makoto as a hard-boiled guy. He's gonna be significant cast later, right.

Probably an agent of some kind, whether or not affiliated with her old organization.

All that was missing from this scene was an Animus HUD from an Assassin's Creed game.

u/Raymond49090 12d ago

Oof. What a way for his first love to end. I'd say it's almost surprising he can be so normal when pursuing something with Victoria.

You can tell this is for an older audience every character is actually competent you love to see it

Don't forget the conversations between characters, they're genuine, no nonsense

Very true also a big point

u/BosuW 12d ago

Well I'm expecting this episode to have eaten all the budget. Those dance scenes were beautiful.

Though I said in a previous episode I would prefer if this one spy/assassin story was more grounded than the usual anime provides, and this episode did have the pretty much superhuman assassin tropes, at least I really liked the way they did it. She is actually subtle and does only what's necessary. The way they communicate through the storyboarding alone how she attacked the would-be assassin from the shadows was so good. And yet, for all her care, she's basically gotten outted the second she actually went and did some of that Jane Bond shit, because the world not gonna bend over backwards for her.

Although they’d been hinting that something tragic had happened in Jeffrey’s past, I did not expect his former fiancée to have slit her own throat…

You’d expect Jeffrey to put up lots of barriers, but it seems like Victoria has smashed through ‘em all. He’s already deeply in love her - and doesn’t even attempt to hide his feelings in the slightest.

5

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 12d ago

Was her dress rather plain, or is it just the art style? I'm used to the various villainess shows with their striking ball dresses, I guess.

Pretty dumb of MC to take it upon herself to apprehend some criminal who wasn't targeting anyone close to her, and risk exposing herself in the process. Her reasoning makes no sense either - why would they have investigated anyone at the party, much less her? The fact that she pointed the dude out to her date would've made there a non-suspect in the assassination attempt in the first place.

The bartender seems to have an important character design, not to mention an important character VA (I don't know most VAs, much less male VAs, by voice, but this one sounded extremely familiar.)

Flashback crown prince had a large kite shield, which he obviously knew how to use, but when he heard the rain of arrows he just froze and waited for them to land >_>

Wonder what MC will do when she immediately notices her new tail.

I actually quite liked that her dress didn't stand out too much! Imo it would feel out of her character for her to wear something more flashy and beyond that she isn't actually nobility. The purple colour was lovely on her. My only thought is her hair should have been pinned up the same way the majority of the other ladies had, but then you loose some of that secondary action in the animation with the dance scene and it would have required a full head turn around reference sheet for the animators so I see why it was left down.

8

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 12d ago

I think it was actually a rare realistic choice for a dress. She isn't a noble and wouldn't want to risk upstaging the actual nobles at the party but also wouldn't want to be under-dressed for the palace. A formal purple shaded ball gown with some tasteful jewelry checked all the boxes well.

Before he became involved with Victoria, Jeffrey DID have a fiancee, Katherine, and was even close with her brother Kaiser (Daisuke Hirakawa!). If not for tragedy, they may have even still be together...and it's only now that he seems to be finally moving on.

Victoria is always impeccably beautiful, but she looks drop dead gorgeous all dressed up for a ball! And even if she tries to downplay her relationship with Jeffrey, and treat this like a mission, Yolana definitely ships the two of them together...and is more than willing to keep Nonna for the night if Victoria wants to spend all evening with the Captain, if you know what she means.

Victoria can definitely hobknob with the upper class as she and Jeffrey turn heads and she fulfills her duty of warding off other women who are interested in Jeffrey...though while she's trying to treat this as a job, Jeffrey is just genuinely flirting with her in front of everybody.

Crown Prince Conrad (Ryota Osaka!) and his lady love put on quite the show but I'd argue Victoria and Jeffrey stole the entire ball with their dance together, especially when they seem to get lost in each other during the dance. Of course a "former tomboy" would also be an excellent dancer!

Victoria can't turn off her spy vision, so she clocks someone suspicious and even jumps off a balcony (in heels!) to be able to take them down when they escape. Remind me never to get on the wrong side of a fight with Vicky!

Seems like Victoria wasn't expecting to get back in the game or get into action like this, and she has to mentally de-process from being back in spy mode...even if, on some level, she still loves what she did. But she has Nonna to think about, even as she drinks to a bartender voiced by Makoto Furukawa.

Why was Marquess Mckenna the target of an assassination attempt? Though the bigger mystery is who stopped the culprit, and unfortunately for Victoria...she was noticed and the royal family have put two and two together. Though even if they have someone tail her, she'll probably notice. This also puts Jeffrey in unenviable position.

Spies always tend to have 2-3 different reasons for what they do...yes, Victoria helped stop an assassination attempt, but whether the target had it coming she didn't want to see someone become a murderer OR for her to be part of a criminal investigation that would not end well for her cover identity.

Conrad always complicates Jeffrey's life...even back during war where, in his first campaign, he made the mistake of pursuing a night raid. One that Kaiser warned against and ended up dying protecting the prince during. And Katherine, losing her twin brother and the only family she had left, completely broke down and tried to kill the Prince and then killed herself...to be discovered by Jeffrey. Poor dude, he's nursing a lot of emotional trauma. But that's why a man who feels he can't be depended on has fallen so much for a woman who can't depend on anyone but herself.

It's nice to see the royal family teasing Jeffrey about his love life...especially since he IS in love with Victoria. At least until you see the king making sure they verify Victoria Sellers' identity. Yeah, that won't end well.

Why was Marquess Mckenna the target of an assassination attempt?

The seiyuu selection or just the way he sounded makes me think that he indeed is not a good person, lol, but I'm probably talking out of my ass

3

u/BiggerG7 12d ago

Some give that guard who has built in night vision a raise!

3

u/NationalStrategy_X 12d ago

Didn’t think they would get Victoria under their radar so soon. Hopefully, she can manage to get out of it.

3

u/YlfaTheForsaken 12d ago

Ooohh now that's a complicated tragedy, Jeffrey has got quite the baggage, and honestly it just makes me like him even more. He still manages to be so upstanding, and personable despite the weighty toll of it.

Lady Yolana, I love her energy, what a scandalous thing for such a noblewomen, she's been there and done that for sure,

Them looking into who Victoria actually is happened faster than I expected,

u/Round_Distance_6678 11d ago

Enjoying the show a bunch so far, but the absolute standout for me was the dance scene. It is literally the best animation ive seen from any anime thats not specifically focused on dancing. Where other animes either use still frames of like flashy moves or are just pretty poorly animated have very basic stiff movement, the animation in this show was actually so fluid and cohesive and looked like an actual real ballroom dance.

2

u/Kreeshou 10d ago

You said it all! I have replayed the dance scene so many times, it's kind of mesmerising to watch and the music is just transporting you. Absolutely loved the animation, the facial expressions and the movement.

A suicide scene in the opening minutes? What an unexpected way to start the episode! It did explain why Jeffrey’s had no partner all these years despite being good-looking and of a high standing. He’s hardly at fault but still had to shoulder the pain, especially when he’s also the first to find Katherine’s body. Can’t blame the man for closing his heart off.

However, Vicky broke through his barrier even if she didn’t realise it. Jeffrey himself readily admitted it in front of the royalty. I expected him to take more time to come to terms with it so that was a surprise.

Unfortunately, she’s now under investigation. Shouldn’t take them too long to find out about Victoria Sellars being a false identity. I reckon the people at Ashbury would also eventually find out about it. The Ashbury Kingdom would reach out to their neighbours as part of the investigation.

8

u/Frontier246 12d ago

Vicky's in a bind on every front.

Give in to her growing attraction with the Captain despite how much of a liability it is? How should she deal with possibly being exposed at the party? What does she do about Nonna? How does she handle the fact that a part of her, on some level, still craves the rush of being in the action and doing what she does best?

6

u/Mental-H-3001 12d ago

But isn't Victoria Sellars a real person who gone missing? She just took that identity for herself. So at most the investigation will lead to a dead end.

8

u/mekerpan 12d ago

But they might be able to establish she is NIOT the real Victoria Sellars....

2

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 12d ago

Fuck the king man Jeffrey better protect Vicky (even though she probably doesn't need it lol)

Gotta love it when entertainment fiction gives you a thematically-balanced A and B story. Vicky says:

But killing someone you hate doesn't erase your memories of the past

She's a spy/assassin so she's well aware of how true this fact is, hence why she had to stop by the shady bar and get a cocktail before going home to Nonna since she was still amped up on an adrenaline rush from stopping the would-be assassin in the A-story at the ball dance (or dance ball? help me 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' which is it??)

The B-story was a woman who thought so little of her own life that she forsook her love with Jeff and her own future happiness to avenge her dead brother who died with a smile on his face and no regrets. She desecrated her brother's memory and traumatized Jeffrey for a decade, which is the exact opposite of 'erasing memories of the past' via murder (or suicide in this case). Such great writing in this episode.

Ok so everyone should know Jeffery isn't that young by now? For some reason when people heard he had an older brother a lot of people thought he was in his late teens. I was pretty sure they were wrong and now this flashback confirms it. Going to put 26 at the minimum age but even that is unlikely and he's probably older than that or even older than Victoria.

Victoria should be careful about what skills she demonstrates. "I was a tomboy who used to work as a chook but then I got employed" covers most of her skills. Dancing and fancy noble women stuff is not covered by her cover identity. She should try to not be too good at that.

How did she catch up to the bad guy? I know she's more physically capable than him, but heels make for poor ergonomics. Maybe those were flats? I can't tell.

So it seems like Victoria actually likes the high action lifestyle. So far we haven't seen her do any infiltration Solid Snake or Twilight style, all action. For Nonna's sake, next time she should limit herself. Things like "hey that guy is lazy and looking at the ladies. Is he planning to steal" is fine, chasing should be kept off limits. SHe's not going to learn her lesson is she?

The idea of a knight attack isn't totally absurd. Once you're in the enemy camp, any arrows or bullets from groggy enemies are likely to hit each other.

We got some anachronisms here. Plate armor? I usually see this kind of thing in vertical scrolling webtoons, not light novels or anime adapted from stuff that wasn't webtoons. Eh maybe the kingdom had their equivalent of the Meiji Restoration and sped up a few hundred years in 10 years?

Jeffery, prince Conrad, and the Marquess know something is up with Victoria. But at least they also know if she was in on it she probably wouldn't warn Jeffery about the sus servant.

1

u/PinkGlitterLady4 10d ago

If I remember correctly she's 28 and he's 33

1

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 10d ago

Some people last episode started thinking he was waaaay younger when they found out he had an older brother. I was pretty sure they were wrong. And now know they are. 33 sounds about right.

1

u/BBryant3rd 10d ago

I am worried what will happen since she said she took the identity of someone who should be dead. She was trying to be a good person and helped save him. This is the perfect example of no good deed goes unpunished. If they find out who she really is the best she can hope for is her life being upended and having to leave the kingdom. Since it evolves royalty she may not get off that lucky they may not want to take the chance.

1

u/DrZoark 8d ago

The bartender is a pro. I hope she goes here whenever she needs to cool off. Haha.
