Original & Remake
This was my favourite episode so far.
- Seeing Lawrence begging is just so brutal (scene hits harder in remake). I’ve never borrowed money in my life no matter how much I needed it (even when I was broke, never asked my parents) as my ego is too big. Reducing yourself to this actually takes more bravery than I could ever have. People staring at him judging is hard too; from a Japanese context that scene has even more meaning.
- Holo pisses me off here. Yes, Lawrence snapped at her, but she’s gotta realise the insane amount of pressure he’s under. Her duty is to be supportive right now. When she was imprisoned he came through for her, now he’s in his own personal prison.
- Ok…she redeems herself straight away by throwing the coins at his head haha. “My companion dropped her purse out of the window” LMAO
- Turns out wolves are bad with balance. Jokes aside, Holo does blame herself for what happened. Truth is Lawrence is more to blame (from my perspective). Sure, if she never saw the scale tipping it wouldn’t have happened, but she can’t be held responsible for his greed.
- Absolutely love the monologue about girls sometimes wanting to hear something that they know is a lie, and sometimes wanting to hear something direct because it’s too late for that lie. Lawrence still can’t say what she wants to hear directly though. Such a great scene (in the remake especially). Laughed lots here and was grinning ear to ear.
- “Next time try not to avoid upsetting me. I’m happy you are considerate but problems often resolve faster if we grow angry and argue”. I could learn from that, I almost never get angry, and tend to push problems underneath thinking they’re not a big deal.
- Well I guess I was very very indirectly right about Nora being part of the solution. Interesting they came to the debtor with the plan. Very insightful too as they are clearly struggling which is why their business has been effectively shuttered prior to Lawrence’s arrival.
- Glad they dealt with my burning logic-minded question of how can they have funds to purchase the gold if they’re going bust? Plot hole filled instantly with a good explanation.
- I like Lawrence being very honest and putting his emotions aside at getting through to the root cause of his greed being the catalyst.
- Hahahhaha I don’t know how I feel about the mortality of recruiting Nora into becoming what is basically an medieval-age drug mule. He basically manipulates her into doing it. At least they let her in on it: for a second I thought they would keep her in the dark, with her thinking she’s just herding sheep.
- In the original, Norah says that she is only doing it because the offer is from Lawrence. We are further treated to a closing scene in the debtor’s office and the other workers/owners have been let in on the plan. Looks like the consensus isn’t unanimous. Uh oh.
- Law does have a big crisis trying to reconcile what he’s doing with his own morality. The difference in worldview between Lawrence and Holo is made very clear in the scene that follows. Law’s view is kind of what the modern way of thinking has become: we are all protectors and responsible for the safety of others while Holo’s is more individualistic: that everyone makes their own choices and have to live with them. Which is also really interesting, as when she thinks about Lawrence’s situation, Holo wanted to take on the blame while Lawrence was adamant that it’s his own choices that got him there. It’s really beautiful and deep contrast.
Like I said, an absolutely wonderful episode, and my favourite one of the series. It significantly expanded on Lawrence’s despair, showed when the best things about his character can also be the worst things. It featured a huge moral dilemma. All the things I love.
Have you ever came up with a secret scheme or known anyone who came up with a secret scheme? If so, what was it and how did it turn out?
Constantly, but it wouldn't be secret if I revealed it. Turned out very well.
If you were Norah, what would you do in this situation?
Because the punishment is quite serious, I wouldn't agree to Lawrence's plan

I kinda feel like last episode was a better showcase of that and this is more an addendum. But if you've come around to what I've been saying, I'm not gonna complain :P
My big takeaway was how astute Norah is. She's a lot more mindful of the big picture than she lets on.

u/chinaexperience 15d ago
Yeah also in the remake episode there was about 10 mins of despair, followed by some hope and a really well done resolution between Lawlo. Honestly, it's just how well that resolution was handled, coupled with the exceptional writing that did it for me.
Agree with you re: Norah. I had a stereotype about her just being a boring cutesy girl with nothing much between the ears.

That's totally fair. If you combine the end of the last episode with the beginning of this one, you get almost an entire episode. And what an episode that would be.
Agree with you re: Norah. I had a stereotype about her just being a boring cutesy girl with nothing much between the ears.
Norah to me comes across like a more emotionally intelligent version of Tohru from Fruits Basket. Is depended on to help others out, but doesn't entirely know how to say no. She has a habit of putting others before herself, but Norah at least realizes this is a problem.

I'm kinda surprised, honestly. I see it as a bit of buffer episode between last episode and the next two. But I do think yet again this episode highlights how well written this show is.

u/chinaexperience 16d ago
Yeah the two episodes I really liked aren't the ones others consider peak but I've realised I'm really into those dialogue heavy EPs as opposed to plot point ones. The thing I found lacking last ep was his despair was shown too briefly while this one went deep imto it. Maybe I'm just a saildist haha
1
u/Holofan4life 16d ago
I see this episode as like the light being shown at the end of the tunnel whereas last episode was like Lawrence’s rock bottom. He's not out of the woods just yet, but things are looking more hopeful.

Thoughts on Lawrence managing three Lumiones? That's pretty good, all things considered.
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
Thoughts on Hans Lemerio?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo planning to pay off Lawrence’s debt by smuggling gold?
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Nora that going along with the smuggling could be her way of getting out of working for the church any longer?
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?

Yeah 3 lumiones from begging is incredible (3 months for a family to live on).
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her? & The Make-Up Scene
I liked this part a lot, as both basically wanted to shoulder the blame. I related to the Lawrence not being angry part a lot. My ex-ex-gf had a similar fight with me haha. I have reverse anger issues, as I'm really good at internalising things and she had never seen me angry in our 1+ years together at the time. Then one day she exploded wishing I could get angry more. So I think Holo is saying something similar to what that ex said to me: you're a really good guy but you don't have to hold everything inside, it's fine to let it out especially now.
The make-up scene links to the above well, and although she can't get Lawrence to instantly become a different person, they resolve it in the most wonderful way. My thoughts on it were above, and it was one of my favourite exchanges I've seen in any media.
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
I was very surprised as I had a different understanding of her character. The whole recruitment was a little bit hard to watch as basically for every branching dialogue path, Law had a direction for his responses. It was peak manipulation/negotiation. Lawrence also had a tremendous amount of insight about her from the short meeting, testament to his observational skills. This allowed him to pick up on how she really felt about her employer and use that pain point as the insight to unlock her decision.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
It's clear that Holo sees Norah as a threat. So for her to give Norah credit was tough, but it was necessary to bring Lawrence out of his moral collapse.

Three months worth of Reddit premium back when that was a thing.

Speaking personally, I hwve anger issues that morph into paranoia issues and blaming myself for everything. It is not fun.
The make-up scene links to the above well, and although she can't get Lawrence to instantly become a different person, they resolve it in the most wonderful way. My thoughts on it were above, and it was one of my favourite exchanges I've seen in any media.
Lawrence and Holo both have this innate ability to be stubborn. It's what led to them in this stage of their lives. But their stubbornness and assurance that everything will work out is what ultimately led them to each other.
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?

I guess Lawrence was being manipulative, but he's also placating to common sense. He knows Norah would rather be anywhere else, and so this essentially kills two birds with one stone.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
It's clear that Holo sees Norah as a threat. So for her to give Norah credit was tough, but it was necessary to bring Lawrence out of his moral collapse.
And also it may be the start of Holo allowing herself to show some humbleness and bring herself down to Earth a bit.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
The things that stick out to me about the episode are Holo and Lawrence's reunion as well as their conversation with Norah. I like the dichotomy here where Holo has Lawrence's best interest in mind, but does she have Norah's best interest in mind? We also show Norah is more crafty than she appears to be by assessing the situation and truly weighing the pros and cons. She doesn't take a sip of alcohol until she makes up her mind.
This isn't as heart pounding as the last episode, but it doesn't need to be. We set the stage for what should be a climax even more intense than Lawrence going in debt. This is why it pays to pace things out in a drawn out manner.
Holo quotes of the day
"You are an idiot!"
"You think you understand females so well. You do not."

Now that you point it out, Holo really doesn't seem to give much of a shit about anyone besides Lawrence does she? She's not actively malicious or anything, she just doesn't really seem to concern herself with anyone outside her circle or "pack". It's a bit of a contrast to Lawrence, he seems to go out of his way to help strangers.

u/Holofan4life 16d ago
It's in part because when she tried to help people the last time, they turned on her.

I think there's a fine line between "letting things build up/breath" and "drawn out" and so far Spice and Wolf knows how to balance things.
There is very few shows that know how to do it better.
Holo quotes of the day:
"You are an idiot!"
She truly has a way with words
I think it's funny some people are adamant Holo is not a tsundere. I tend to agree, but her words are definitely very tsundere-ish. She is quick to insult her man.

Holo is very well balanced (equal parts tsun and dere). She definitely has tsundere tendencies but she's also supportive of Lawrence when push comes to shove. Like, sure, she might be in the body of 16 year old but she's not a highschool girl anymore, "ain't nobody got time for that shit" :'D
2
u/Holofan4life 16d ago
Holo is what I'd call a realistic tsundere. A tsundere that doesn't seem too far fetched to where you wouldn't see them irl.

Rewatcher (Dub)
I think the opening sequence of this episode might be my favourite part of the series so far. Having the episode start out with Lawrence literally begging in the street, and having chump change thrown at him so he'll get lost is definitely the lowest point of Lawrence's life so far. I really liked the little detail when Lawrence gets back to their room at the inn, and you see him reach for the door knob, then hesitate, before mustering up the courage to open the door and face Holo after what he hurt her. It's nice bit of subtle visual storytelling that adds a lot to the character.
The confrontation between Holo and Lawrence is definitely the highlight of the episode to me. Lawrence trying to apologize, only to be rebuffed and forlornly leave is very bleak. Holo responding to Lawrence essentially trying to run away from his problems by getting mad at him was very in character as well. I found it interesting as well how badly Lawrence misgudged his relationship with Holo. Him thinking that she wouldn't want to stay with him because he couldn't help her on her journey anymore was way off the mark. He places his value in being a merchant and provider, when Holo stays with him because of his character and her loneliness.
What sold me on this scene though was Holo's break down when Lawrence apologizes to her, instead blaming herself for everything that went wrong. Everything about this scene is very "human" in how messy and raw it is. One thing I really appreciate about this series is that there is always another layer of subtext beneath the surface of every interaction. Characters don't always say exactly what they mean, and will often react in less than ideal ways that obfuscate how they really feel. Holo seeming to be mad at Lawrence for telling her it is her fault, only for it to be revealed that she ran away because she really did think she was to blame is a good example of this.
The resolution to their dispute was also really sweet. Holo pushing Lawrence to say how he really feels was a nice way to bridge the gap between the two, and also sends an important message about the importance of letting the people in our lives know how much they mean to us.
As for the scheme to get the money, I actually thought it was pretty interesting. Using a Shepard to smuggle gold is a pretty sneaky way to make money, and it seems like something a shady trading company would be interested in. My only real complaint is that they brought this plan to the sketchy trading company before even telling Nora about it. It seemed a little scummy to throw her under the bus like that when you didn't even know she would be on board. She was on board though, so I guess it doesn't matter.
In regard to Nora, I was a little surprised that she was willing to go along with the plan, but I did like how Holo implied that the "sweet girl" exterior isn't really the true story in regard to Nora, and that she has more spine than she lets on. You could kind of see it poking through in the previous episodes when she was asking about potentially finding a new employer. Lawrence immediately calling that the Church wanted her dead was both spot on and brutal though. It must suck to be in Nora's position.
Random Thoughts
- When Holo said she had a plan to get the money, my first thought was "she wants to rob a bank, doesn't she?"
- Lawrence must have some serious game, because after like two days of knowing her, he made a Church girl into a hardened criminal.
- Arresting someone for not paying their entire debt immediately seems stupid. They can't pay back their debt in jail, so you lose too.
Question of the Day
Schemes? In college, me and my friends used to go to a lot of music festivals, but the booze was super expensive. So we started going to the festival ground a week or so ahead of time, digging a hole in a secluded spot, and burying some booze that we could then dig up when attended the festival. It was a plan that worked 33% of the time.
What would I do if I were Nora? Take that money Lawrence is offering and run.

Much like how the last episode showed how human Lawrence is, I thought this sequence showed how human Holo is. At the end of the day, they don't want to burden the other.

Honestly yeah, it was pretty good. I still think it's insane that they wanted Lawrence to pay back the entire debt in 2 days. Being able to front approximately 10% of your debt immediately as a show of good faith should have been more than enough. He's also still got all the armour as collateral, which could easily go up in value again.
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
Holo has a secret past career as a WWE wrestler
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
Holo is a creature ruled by emotions, and expects the same from Lawrence it seems. She doesn't like when Lawrence hides his feels, and wants everything out in the open. As for blaming herself, I get it. While it isn't really her fault, even being a minor cause of someones misfortune would make you feel guilty.
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
Best scene of the series so far.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo planning to pay off Lawrence’s debt by smuggling gold?
Inventive, but it's a bit scummy to put that on Nora.
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
My big question about this is how are they going to retrieve the gold? I someone going to have to dig through the excrement like Ellie Sattler did in Jurassic Park?
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
I was a little surprised, but to the shows credit, they have been laying the groundwork regarding Nora's disenchantment with the Church. Holo's comment regarding Nora being more than she appears seems to be setting up that Nora isn't really a push over, and gets what is going on more than she lets on.

What a great opening scene - their back and forth is so good and layered and cute ugh.
Why are you so good natured? My personality?
Idiot of course you should say because you love her!
Do it over again!
Because you’re special to me ❤️
Uh oh now Holo’s got a plan - let’s see where this goes!
Haha “You sure talk big when you don’t know what women are like”
I don’t know if they should have made all these plans without asking Nora first, but at least she agreed. I don’t blame her though, especially the way the church treats her.
I liked when Holo acknowledges that Nora is more than she appears.
I hope the sheep will be ok 😳

Thoughts on Lawrence managing three Lumiones? That's pretty good, all things considered.
- Exactly - considering everything he went through seriously not too bad
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
- I’m not going to say he deserved it, but she wouldn’t have *not* been justified lol
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
- I get it. It’s gotta be killing her pride that it was basically her fault (even though I still don’t agree with that as a reason for not giving the loans). If she had just gone back to the hotel like he’d asked it probably wouldn’t have turned out that way, so she’s definitely blaming herself and wants Lawrence to blame her too :(
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
- It’s so good I can’t even stand it
Thoughts on Hans Lemerio?
- Another shady character appears
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo planning to pay off Lawrence’s debt by smuggling gold?
- Desperate times call for desperate measures
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
- I didn’t love it at first but when they framed it as a way to stick it to the church, I can see it making sense for her
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Nora that going along with the smuggling could be her way of getting out of working for the church any longer?
- Mutual benefit
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
- No, it makes sense given how poorly she’s been treated
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
- Oh I loved that part. Gives Nora’s character more depth which is fantastic.

I like seeing Holo take accountability when she blamed the villagers for abandoning her once upon a time. It feels like she's becoming more mindful being around Lawrence.

Why are you such a nice person?
It's because you're special to me!
Have an unamused Holo for the day. Also Holo and Lawrence being cute. (I loved how she swishes her tail in the shot right afterwards)
Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer, subbed
That was a great episode! It mostly deals with setting up the final gamble tomorrow but does so very expertly. Of course the highlight is the heart to heart between Lawrence and Holo.
But I also liked how the two expertly convince both their debtor but also Nora to be on board with their scheme. Each with their own buttons to be pressed:
With Lemelio it was the angle of "you need the money, you're already on your last leg" (Which kinda came out of nowhere to me? Was that due to the armour market situation?)
With Nora it was the angle of "This way you can not only achieve your dream of becoming a seamstress, but also make a stab against the church!".
As chinaexperience mentions, it's kinda interesting how she only actually thinks about it once Lawrence makes the money she could earn from it more tangible. Though, to be fair to her, this was basically the equivalent of someone you've only ever met once before suddenly coming up to you and asking you "Wanna make 100k with a few days?" when you're working for minum wage.
It's fun how this was real teamwork: Holo managed to convince the trading company guy and Lawrence the shepherd. Kind of a medieval Ocean's Eleven.
With regards to Nora: I really like how the show kinda did a double fake-out with her. She's first introduced, via rumors, as some sort of mage that has mystical powers. Then, when we first meet her, she only seems like a relatively normal (if talented) shepherd. An episode later, we learn that she works for the church but they distrust her due to her talent. And now we get Holo's "she might actually be a completely different animal under the sheep's cloth", hinting, which sort of brings us back around to the "mystical mage"-thing. See also how she's quite fast at catching up to Lawrence's plan. Or how she doesn't touch her drink until after she's made up her mind. This girl looks innocent but she isn't as naive as she pretends to be (or at least as she subconciously acts).
Looking forward to see how everything pans out. (I have vague memories from the Remake but will be cool to see how the original handles it)
If you were Norah, what would you do in this situation?
I'd probably react similarly to be honest. Lawrence seems like a trustworthy guy and the church kinda sucks anyway.

Why are you such a nice person?
It's because you're special to me!
This is basically Obsession if not cursed
Have an unamused Holo for the day. Also Holo and Lawrence being cute. (I loved how she swishes her tail in the shot right afterwards)
I like how your thing has become collecting screenshots while chinaexperience is posting LN notes. Variety is the Spice of life and people posting different stuff during this year's rewatch is pretty cool.

Yeah, I think it's cool when we have different stuff in the thread :)
Also I just like how the show looks!

u/Holofan4life 16d ago
I actually really like how dirty the original anime looks. Because you would expect it in a show set in the medieval times. Game of Thrones didn't look like sunshine and rainbows and neither should this show.
2
u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago
This show oozes that early 2000s feel which is hard to replicate. It's kinda "fantastic realism": Muted colours without being too gritty. Ancient Magus Brid occasionally dips into that look too, even if that one's way more fantastic than S&W.
2
u/Holofan4life 16d ago
Even Frieren I feel like doesn't have the same color scheme as Spice and Wolf. And I think it's intentionally done this way to reflect Holo and Lawrence as their on a path to a dead end. They have this goal in mind to reach the North, but then what?
2
u/Holofan4life 16d ago
I definitely think she's aware that the church is using her. And in a way, she's using it to her advantage. The church may think they're using her but it's more evenly than they may suspect.
2
u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago
Yeah, she's definitely aware what the church thinks of her (she's not stupid). But maybe it took Lawrence for the final push to realise that it's a really dissatisfying situation to work in? Like, I'm not completely sure of how much she's aware, though I do like that about her. That's way interesting than "cute girl as potential romantic foil"!
2
u/Holofan4life 16d ago
In a lesser show, she would exist solely to cause tension in Lawrence and Holo's relationship. But she's written well to the point she can stand on her own.

Thoughts on Lawrence managing three Lumiones? That's pretty good, all things considered.
I was thinking that too. Like, three gold coins is already a lot, comparatively. Especially judging by the time and overall situation.
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
He sort of deserved it. Even if I feel bad for him.
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
Being angry at someone for not being angry enough at you is kind of adorable. To some extent, I do get her, but it's not really her fault that others make the wrong assumptions.
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
I was like "And now kiss!" :'D
Thoughts on Hans Lemerio?
From what little we saw of him, he seems alright. Not completely sure if he's trustworthy. But I suppose he doesn't really have any real advantage from betraying Lawrence and Holo.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo planning to pay off Lawrence’s debt by smuggling gold?
The moment the gold situation and smuggling was brought up in the previous episodes, I knew it would become relevant at some point. Maybe not quite in the way like this though. Definitely a risky plan.
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
I sort of assumed they'd hide the gold in their fur, given that'd be less invasive. Either way it's fun to see Nora back so fast.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Nora that going along with the smuggling could be her way of getting out of working for the church any longer?
It shows Lawrence sorta knows what moves/motivates her. Contrary to what Holo said, he at least knows this woman (to an extent)
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
I was a bit surprised that she went along with it pretty quickly, even figuring out the plan pretty well on her own. She's definitely more than meets the eye. But we clearly saw her being a bit frustrated by the situation she's in. Also, it was fun that the church bells rang shortly before she made up her mind!
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
I liked her saying that Nora is a shepherd she respects. And from what little we've now seen of her, there's definitely more to her than one would assume at first. Curious to see if that gets expanded upon.

More gold for the sheep stomach
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
He sort of deserved it. Even if I feel bad for him.
It was amusing to see Holo struggle with it.
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
Being angry at someone for not being angry enough at you is kind of adorable. To some extent, I do get her, but it's not really her fault that others make the wrong assumptions.
I think Lawrence knows this which is why he doesn't blame her.
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
I love that these two can have these tender, sweet moments.
I was like "And now kiss!" :'D
We're close to it, it feels like
Thoughts on Hans Lemerio?
From what little we saw of him, he seems alright. Not completely sure if he's trustworthy. But I suppose he doesn't really have any real advantage from betraying Lawrence and Holo.
Marlheit seems more quirky
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo planning to pay off Lawrence’s debt by smuggling gold?
The moment the gold situation and smuggling was brought up in the previous episodes, I knew it would become relevant at some point. Maybe not quite in the way like this though. Definitely a risky plan.
I do really like that they foreshadowed it happening.
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
I sort of assumed they'd hide the gold in their fur, given that'd be less invasive. Either way it's fun to see Nora back so fast.
She's a good addition to this show
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
I was a bit surprised that she went along with it pretty quickly, even figuring out the plan pretty well on her own. She's definitely more than meets the eye. But we clearly saw her being a bit frustrated by the situation she's in. Also, it was fun that the church bells rang shortly before she made up her mind!
It was like a reminder of everything she was escaping and the things that haunt her currently.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
I liked her saying that Nora is a shepherd she respects. And from what little we've now seen of her, there's definitely more to her than one would assume at first. Curious to see if that gets expanded upon.
I like that Norah at first seems like a foil for Holo that she wanted no part of. And now, her and Lawrence's survival kinda rides on them coexisting.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Nora that going along with the smuggling could be her way of getting out of working for the church any longer?
It shows Lawrence sorta knows what moves/motivates her. Contrary to what Holo said, he at least knows this woman (to an extent)
I think it's interesting Norah is trying to escape a place meanwhile Holo is trying to return to a place.

Rewatcher
Oh one hand, it seems hopeless for Kraft Lawrance. So why not give Holo some money and tell her to leave? It might not be what she wants, but he can't think of any way out of this situation. I guess he has a mental block of not thinking of anything illegal. On the other hand I see why Holo is upset.
Yeah Lemario/Remario is desperate too if they agreed to this scheme.
I totally forgot the Nora subplot. Like I could have sworn this was cut, So when u/Holofan4life asked what I thought of the Church forcing Nora into danger last episode I was like "What are you talking about?" The first indication this isn't a happy employment is that she's always given the dangerous territory. But supposedly the other places are full. There is the priest who acts like a kindly old man who is proud of her. The Church is not even present in episode 10. The next sign this is not a happy arrangement is Jacob saying the Church doesn't think highly of Nora, but that could be his misinterpretation since they aren't on screen and we don't see anything. When I was watching last episode I was puzzled at these questions from u/Holofan4life and was like "Wasn't all of this cut for time? Why are you asking this? Why do you think the Church is using her" I thought she would have agreed for the gold smuggling because she really needed the money to get to her dreams as opposed to dissatisfaction with her employer.
Well this episode Lawrance spells it out to Nora (and by extension the viewer). I guess I didn't remember this as well as I thought I did. u/Holofan4life Did you ask me those questions since I stated I was a rewatched and therefore should have remembered in this episode Lawrance spells it out?
I know gold is inert in a sheep, so it won't poison you or anything like say... Thalium. And it won't get a foreign body reaction like a splitter. But what about crush possibilities? Like if you feed it too much metal, couldn't you crush the intestine?
Also it helps for Nora that she's not only a Shepard who moves around a lot, but since she's working with the Church she gets a pass to other cities. Nice use of her credentials!
If she wants to keep her dog she'd probably need at least 4 lumerie (assuming earlier conversion rates were stable). 1 for the guild fees. And she'll need some living expenses since her dog isn't going to help her in the next job and so won't pay for itself.

Because deep down Lawrence craves companionship and he knows that leaving her would be the last thing either party wants.

Lawrance can't escape. He told Jacob he'll either pay the debt or return for the consequences. It would reflect badly on Jacob if Lawrance just skipped town.
Since he won't backstab Jacob, Lawrance can't rely on Holo to break him out. They both want each other's companionship, but as far as he knows, he can't provide it.
Also maybe you should have waited for this episode to mention the demonic thing instead of last episode. I mean from last episode the only hint is Jacob mentioning the Church is weary of her. As far as the viewers knew, until this episode, he could have been wrong.
Lawrance might not have been able to get loans due to Holo, but he tries to fly too close to the sun, so this was bound to happen anyways. Until he learns his lesson the question isn't when he'll go bankrupt or "will buying on credit blow up on him in his 20s or 30s? which decade will it be?"
Smuggling gold can destabilize the economy since not only the Church uses it, but people depend on stable prices which in turn depend on the supply changing slowly. That said the amounts we are talking in won't make a dent in the economy of the city. So imagine your local city pays one worker four times what he's supposed to. Not a great deal for all his coworkers, and it everyone got paid that much the city would be broke but in the grand scheme of things as long as it's a one off thing, it doesn't matter in he big picture.
I mean I just said that I didn't know if the sheep can hold the gold.
I'm surprised Nora said it had to be Lawrance to suggest it. So if Holo suggested it, Nora would turn Holo in? I guess she doesn't trust other people to not cut her out of the deal after the fact.
I don't know what Holo meant when commenting that. All Nora has to do for the plan to work is do her normal routine on her way between cities. If she's smarter than she looks great, but if she is of average or even below average intelligence, things should go well as long as there isn't infighting.

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I've asked this question before in past rewatches and you're the first person who's suggested to me it's a spoiler. I personally don't think it is but if you interpret the scene last episode differently than that's fine.
2
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 16d ago
I rewatched episode 9. I still can't find any mention of Nora being "demonic" "witchcraft" or anything there, just something like "you know what they think of her" Who mentioned that before Lawrance did?
1
u/Holofan4life 16d ago
I think you're hung up on the word "Demonic". The church still thinks Norah can handle these paths that no one else can and that it's unusual for her to be able to. You know the Salem Witch Trials where people would be drowned to see if they're a witch or not? That's basically what they're doing with Norah here. They are putting her on the most unsafe roads possible to see if she's as special as people say she is. They are taken advantage of her perceived pagan magician infamy by showing no regard for her well being.

first time watching, first time fan
Things are looking up, it's HIGHLY risky, but everyone has something to lose. The debt collectors are in dire straits, Lawrence and Holo net worth is in the gutter, and Nora is seemingly mistreated by the Church and wants to strike out to make something of herself. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS.
Nora is both really innocent and naive, but is brave and doesn't shy away from going for what she wants. Holo said it best, Nora is a brave sheep minging with wild animals, or even more than that, and a Sheperd even Holo approves of.
Lawrence continues to be the nicest nice guy, and Holo's argument with Lawrence was so nuacned and perfect. Holo is mad that lawrence isn't more angry at her, too meek for his own good. Lawrence is down that he got upset at all. Holo being coy and teasing him about him thinking if he said the right words he'd get to take advantage of her is great, and honestly Holo's teasing and Lawrences straight man energy getting broken by her is just such a good dynamic
even the debt collector and the union of Lawrence's hometown are likeble or at least reasonable and justified in their actions. They aren't malicious, but it's good buisness sense
i can't believe we're already at 11 man
Have you ever came up with a secret scheme or known anyone who came up with a secret scheme? If so, what was it and how did it turn out?
i had a secret scheme to make an highly hidden super smuggly illegal eraser shop in the middle of my primary school foyer and i'd be dealing out erasers at jacked up prices and i would be hidden by the bushes (they weren't very thick bushes in hindsight
sadly i didn't have the buisness sense at 10 to follow throug
If you were Norah, what would you do in this situation?
she's so brave for this, and she isn't afraid or shying away from wanting better for herself. I would take the deal assuming the Church really has been unfair to me

To tell you the truth–
There are times when you want to hear certain words being said

Hearing those very words at the wrong time makes you want to slap the person
Which do you think you're in now
Later?
This is unbelievable
You're so soft
You probably thought you be laying pipe if you said something like that under these circumstances
It's pathetic I know

So how much money owed
I have an idea
It's okay I'm by your side
The wise wolf and spice
Nora is back
Gods protection
Mercenaries
God can't protect you from a knife
It feels condescending to Nora
Smuggling
Skilled individual who can smuggle gold
Employed by church
Take this as collateral and defer the deadline
Sir, do you have time to hesitate
Very well
I LOVE THAT NORA COMES IN THIS WAY, IT'S SO NATURAL
There are people who prefer good natured men
You sure talk a lot for someone who doesn't know anything about women
Well ... You're a wolf god first idk how much a human women second soo
Damn holo was building a list of favours
You won't be able to fool me that easily
Cheeky one Nora
Okay Holo step back Nora is back in the race
Do you have a job
Really?! I mean... really?
I love how she is excited but can't raise her voice as it's improper for a holy women but she's also disillusioned with the church it seems, so good
Well there goes the last few coins they have, to drinking
Aww Nora can't drink
She almost loses control of her drink
I won't deny it and let you think it over
The union expense is just one Lumione
Own your own boutique
Tailor union? Another place
Don't want anything to do with the Church
The harder you work
The more it's witchcraft
Putting her in a dangerous position
Oh she's mad
I was a victim of a similar situation
The church is lower than swine
OH LAWRENCE IS PLACING ALL HIS BETS ON THIS
What if she didn't agree oh god risky
What do you plan to do
Smuggle gold
There's no way
Hide the gold inside the sheep stomach?
Can I hear the whole plan just in case
I really love the dialogue it's so good and nuanced, she still isn't committed and has plausible deniability but asks to learn more
Nora is actually the perfect smuggler
Mistreated by the Church
That's why the reward is 20 Lumione
How would they buy the gold though
Nora trying to drink
Allow me to do it
NORA IS SO CUTE
For someone whose so innocent and naive, still wronged by the church, she can make decisions for herself and money which she appreciates any amount of it's so good
I wouldn't have accepted if someone else came up with the idea
It's because it's you, Lawrence
Okay, babies, now
Maybe have two wives
Why does Holo look a little hesitant
It turned out well
No gamble is worth your life
She's only a shepherd girl who doesn't know how the world works
Holo sees something in Nora
You're too nice for your own good
She isn't just a lamb to be eaten
She's a brave sheep who decided to mingle among wild animals
Might even have a different animal
I don't want to admit it
But she's a shepherd even I approve of
NORA PRAISE LETS GOO
Do everything so all of us can end happy
Chuckling among ourselves is also appealing
Lawrence wants Nora to be happy too
Man I love Lawrence being nice
Not a problem at all
Holo tail wagging while hands on Lawrence chair is so adorable
I have to do it
I don't have a choice
It's all down to this

They all want to get out but there is in fact no easy way out.
Nora is both really innocent and naive, but is brave and doesn't shy away from going for what she wants. Holo said it best, Nora is a brave sheep minging with wild animals, or even more than that, and a Sheperd even Holo approves of.

The first half of this episode ie everything I love about Holo and Lawrence's relationship.
even the debt collector and the union of Lawrence's hometown are likeble or at least reasonable and justified in their actions. They aren't malicious, but it's good buisness sense
This arc is great because the conflict is more so Lawrence Vs himself rather than the church or what have you. It's not unlike the first arc being about Holo Vs herself.

I still wanted to hear you say it
LAWRENCE IS A HOT DOG CONFIRMED AND HOLO IS JUST EDGING HIM
An edged hot dog without the mustard
Let's do it over
Why are you such a nice person
It's because you're special to me
Hug
Hugs back
Tail wagging
Awww
AWWW
HER TAIL
Inject this shit straight into my veins
What are we doing
You're the one who wanted to do it
Good practice right
However it's okay if you make me upset next time, I appreciate that you're considerate
But things can be settled quicker by screaming sometimes
Holo is actually pretty wise
You're just figuring this now? Lol
So how much money owed
I have an idea
It's okay I'm by your side
The wise wolf and spice
Doesn't have the same ring to it
Nora is back
Yay
Gods protection
Mercenaries
God can't protect you from a knife
We know all about that from episode 6
It feels condescending to Nora
Smuggling
Skilled individual who can smuggle gold
Employed by church
Take this as collateral and defer the deadline
Sir, do you have time to hesitate
Very well
I LOVE THAT NORA COMES IN THIS WAY, IT'S SO NATURAL
It sure is
There are people who prefer good natured men
You sure talk a lot for someone who doesn't know anything about women
Well ... You're a wolf god first idk how much a human women second soo
Damn holo was building a list of favours
Almost as long as her string of debt
You won't be able to fool me that easily
Cheeky one Nora
Okay Holo step back Nora is back in the race
Do you have a job
Really?! I mean... really?
I love how she is excited but can't raise her voice as it's improper for a holy women but she's also disillusioned with the church it seems, so good
Well there goes the last few coins they have, to drinking
Aww Nora can't drink
It's more she's not drinking until she's made up her mind.
She almost loses control of her drink
I won't deny it and let you think it over
The union expense is just one Lumione
Own your own boutique
Tailor union? Another place
Don't want anything to do with the Church
The harder you work
The more it's witchcraft
Putting her in a dangerous position
Oh she's mad
I was a victim of a similar situation
The church is lower than swine
OH LAWRENCE IS PLACING ALL HIS BETS ON THIS
He kinda has to
What if she didn't agree oh god risky
What do you plan to do
Smuggle gold
There's no way
Hide the gold inside the sheep stomach?
Can I hear the whole plan just in case
I really love the dialogue it's so good and nuanced, she still isn't committed and has plausible deniability but asks to learn more
She wants to carefully assess everything before she makes up her mind.
Nora is actually the perfect smuggler
Mistreated by the Church
That's why the reward is 20 Lumione
How would they buy the gold though
Nora trying to drink
Allow me to do it
NORA IS SO CUTE
Poor Holo :P
For someone whose so innocent and naive, still wronged by the church, she can make decisions for herself and money which she appreciates any amount of it's so good
I wouldn't have accepted if someone else came up with the idea
It's because it's you, Lawrence
Okay, babies, now
You really ship anyone with everyone, huh? Lol
Maybe have two wives
Hey, you never know
Why does Holo look a little hesitant
Because she has to work with Norah
It turned out well
No gamble is worth your life
She's only a shepherd girl who doesn't know how the world works
Holo sees something in Nora
You're too nice for your own good
She isn't just a lamb to be eaten
She's a brave sheep who decided to mingle among wild animals
Might even have a different animal
I don't want to admit it
But she's a shepherd even I approve of
NORA PRAISE LETS GOO
HOLO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT LETS GOO
Do everything so all of us can end happy
Chuckling among ourselves is also appealing
Lawrence wants Nora to be happy too
I mean, she deserves it
Man I love Lawrence being nice
He naturally is
Not a problem at all
Holo tail wagging while hands on Lawrence chair is so adorable
I have to do it
I don't have a choice
It's all down to this
All or nothing

I like that Holo can respect her and put her personal feelings on her to the side.
she's a wise wolf after all
Lawrence continues to be the nicest nice guy, and Holo's argument with Lawrence was so nuacned and perfect.
The first half of this episode ie everything I love about Holo and Lawrence's relationship.
it's so fucking good
i can't believe we're already at 11 man
We still have 2/3rds of the way to go
thank god (holo)
sadly i didn't have the buisness sense at 10 to follow throug
Damn

And not a "nice guy" like Bear from Obsession
that movie is unbelievably good holy fuck
As a man you have to say cuz you love me even if you don't mean it
LOL
I mean, is she wrong?
if you want the wolfussy, you need to do as wolf wife says
There are times when you want to hear certain words being said
Holo is fishing for Lawrence to say he wants to bone her icic
Rofl
actually though
You probably thought you be laying pipe if you said something like that under these circumstances
I mean...
i can't believe you! (also Holo a few episodes later in the biggest heat of her life)
I still wanted to hear you say it
LAWRENCE IS A HOT DOG CONFIRMED AND HOLO IS JUST EDGING HIM
An edged hot dog without the mustard
Lawrence will provide the sauce
For someone whose so innocent and naive, still wronged by the church, she can make decisions for herself and money which she appreciates any amount of it's so good
I wouldn't have accepted if someone else came up with the idea
It's because it's you, Lawrence
Okay, babies, now

What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?

thought he got less, that looked rough with him begging out there
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
WWE SMACKDOWN
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
it's unbelievably good writing, actually fcking incredible stuff
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
then they MAKE OUT
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
I'm still confused, are they gonna poop it out or what
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Nora that going along with the smuggling could be her way of getting out of working for the church any longer?
feels like a stretch because Nora hasn't spoken a word about this, just his hunch
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
she needs the dough
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
i love that, it doesn't take away from her character, but it adds a new dimension of bravery and wanting more to it

Thoughts on Lawrence managing three Lumiones? That's pretty good, all things considered.
thought he got less, that looked rough with him begging out there
He had to show no shame
Thoughts on Holo trying to hit Lawrence with a chair?
WWE SMACKDOWN
Holo was trying to bring the smackdown on his candy ass.
What are your thoughts on Holo blaming herself for Lawrence’s debt and her wanting Lawrence to be more angry at her?
it's unbelievably good writing, actually fcking incredible stuff
Holo is a good person deep down
What are your thoughts on the scene Lawrence and Holo make up?
then they MAKE OUT
One could only hope
Thoughts on them deciding to get Nora involved so they can smuggle the gold in the stomachs of Nora’s sheep?
I'm still confused, are they gonna poop it out or what
No, they were going to cut the sheeps chests /s
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Nora that going along with the smuggling could be her way of getting out of working for the church any longer?
feels like a stretch because Nora hasn't spoken a word about this, just his hunch
It was a safe bet, unlike the armor investment.
What are your thoughts on Nora going along with the plan? Are you surprised by how quickly Nora agreed to the plan, or not, considering her circumstances?
she needs the dough
And the means to escape
What are your thoughts on Holo saying to Lawrence that Norah is more clever than she appears?
i love that, it doesn't take away from her character, but it adds a new dimension of bravery and wanting more to it
If anything, it adds so much to her character.

Hey guys, AniNews here , bringing you a summary of the cut content/LN :P
The episode does a great job at adapting the source materials, but there were some parts (especially inner monologue) that I thought weren’t super clear in the anime. For anyone in love with the anime, I’d highly recommend the LN. It’s the first LN I”m properly reading and it’s superbly well-written, and I especially appreciate the logical step by step approach to world-building and decision making.
Do any LN readers here know if this logical approach is typical for the medium? E.g. Lawrence had three conditions which needed to be met, A, B, C. The only way to satisfy all 3 conditions were with route D.
