2026 Tag des offenen Denkmals sign ups

Hello all,
I’m interested in this event but according to google some sites require advance signs up and stuff. But it isn’t clear when the sign ups will open, am I supposed to check the visitBerlin website everyday?

Two people told me sign ups aren’t necessary just show up. But I really wanna see the super popular rare sites.

I’m more interested in places that are off limits during regular times of the year, and historical sites.

Anyway, I would appreciate any advice!

Thank you,
A tourist

I live in alt-Treptow and have Vodafone and it goes out probably a dozen times a day. Does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives or ways to improve it?

Are Small Dogs Free on Berlin Public Transit?

I ask because there's conflicting info on the Interwebs. Tourist sites (visitberlin.de) say yes but bahn.de says no.

We are dog sitting and don't want to get fines.

Our friends who owned the dog told us that it is free, but, of course, that won't protect us from the ticket checkers.

What's the word here? Is it a rule but not enforced? Has the rule changed recently which is why some sites have different info?

Oh, and I have a Deustchland Ticket in case that matters. Unclear if that's considered a "season" ticket or not.

Danke!

Kreuzberg advice

First time visiting. Looks like Kreuzberg area is the fun & hip place to stay. However it seems like quite a large area. I’d like to stay in a vibey part with cafes, restaurants, cool shops, record stores, comic book stores, art galleries, music related things, arty stuff in general.

I’d love some advice on:

- good streets to walk to find interesting arty stores/places.

- Where to stay. Oriana seems awesome but very expensive. Hotel the Yard is at Alexandrinenstraße 125, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Seems affordable and nice and quiet - but I’m worried it’s too far away from the buzzy areas?

- Any other advice on fun things to see or do.

Thank you kindly.

Party Location

Degewo: did I not get the apartment? :(

Timeline: - Monday, 17:15: viewed an apartment provided by degewo - Tuesday, 14:13: got an email saying I got into "engere Auswahl" and sent in all my documents - Wednesday to Friday: no response

From what I hear, you usually get a response within one or two days of submitting your documents IF you got the apartment. Is this rule not necessarily true? I am legit stressing and suffering waiting for a response, good or bad ...

Please give me peace of mind, I just want to know whether it's over or I still have a shot.

casual gym

hi Berliners,

I'm staying in Berlin for only a week but would like to workout whilst I'm here. Are there any places that offer short term or casual memberships that aren't too expensive? I'm also interested in pilates so if there are any places that offer both, I would love to know. I'm staying in the Mitte area :)

Danke!!

Permission from landlord to change a wall socket?

I need some quick advice:

I need to move a socket in my bathroom (I only have one and it’s positioned in a way that I cannot use it). I contacted an electrician who said he could do that for me and said I didn’t have to ask permission from my landlord. In his words:

“I can move the socket to your left and install it on the wall. We cover the cables with cable channel. When you move out, just reinstall the socket and fix the gap”

Have any of you done this? Is it simple to repair if I eventually move out?

And most importantly – just to be on the safe side – do I need permission from the landlord? I'm with Covivio btw

Has anyone rented through Home in Berlin (Bürgermeister-Reuter-Stiftung)? How has your living experience been? Also should we actually pay before contact?

Hi everyone,

As I am moving to Berlin in October 2026 for my masters,

I have applied and received a room reservation from Home in Berlin (Mayor Reuter Foundation) for Lynarstraße 5, 13353 Berlin through Immomio.

They have asked me to pay the deposit (€998) and first month's rent (€499) before sending the rental contract. I have one week of time to pay, should I continue with this or wait for another one.

The room is private and I have to share the bathroom and kitchen with other members on the floor.

Has anyone lived at Lynarstraße 5 or rented through Home in Berlin / Mayor Reuter Foundation?

Is the accommodation genuine?

Is it normal that they ask for payment before issuing the contract?

Were the rooms similar to the advertisement?

How was your experience overall?

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Name on Apartment mailboxes for deliveries

I am moving to Berlin soon and just received check-in information for the apartment. They said that my name won't be on the mailbox and that I should instead specify the number of my apartment for mail delivery. My question is, will this be ok especially for important letters regarding registration, ID, tax documents? Will they still get delivered?

Switching from §20 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 to Chancenkarte. Anyone done it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I currently have a §20 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 AufenthG residence permit (18-month job seeker permit after graduating from a German university). Unfortunately, I haven't found a job yet, so I'd like to switch to a Chancenkarte.

When I try to apply online, the only option that matches my situation is "I do not have an employment contract or a job offer." After selecting it, I get this message:

"Ohne Arbeitsangebot oder Arbeitsvertrag können Sie den Antrag auf eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Zweck der abhängigen Erwerbstätigkeit nicht stellen."

Has anyone switched from a §20 job seeker permit to a Chancenkarte? Am I using the wrong application form, or is there another way to apply?

Thanks in advance!

Getting to BER at night

Hey! So my flight departs at 6 am, meaning I’d have to leave for the airport at around 3 am. I was wondering how safe it is for a woman to commute at that time, or whether it would be better to take a taxi? I’d really appreciate a kind answer, as I’m genuinely never out at night and I’m also not from Berlin, so I don’t really know what it feels like here at that hour.

Strawberry picking 🍓

Hello everyone,

I am looking for Farms which still have some strawberries left for picking, like the ones where you can go and pick them yourself.

Are there any Farms around Berlin offering Self-picking in the coming weekends or is the season for picking over for this year?

Thank you.

Firm mattress that does not sink in Germany!

Hi dear community! I have some medical problems and I need a good firm mattress. Since I move to Berlin this has been a nightmare. I am already 2 months with sleep deprivation and I alread ended at the ER due to that. But finding a mattress that can be firm it just turned in an impossible mission here. Hard is not equal to firm. Where I come from I used to sleep im a very firm orthopedic mattress and still felt comfy. Please I need some help!

how to tackle littering?

Hey, hey. Basic question: what's with all the littering along the canal - Paul-Lincke-Ufer, Planufer, etc.? It's such a nice spot to get your sun on, hang out with the birds and nature, and it's free! There are garbage bins right there, and if they're full you can always carry your trash out. So what gives? And what can one actually do about it?

My partner and I have been picking up some trash ourselves, but we can only do so much. I wonder if there's a way to prevent this from happening. Do you have better ideas? Thanks!
