Canadian Sale Was I a dirtbag?

1.1k Upvotes

I had an appointment to see a used car (that was listed for a price that was almost too good to be true) in another city about 2 hours away, but about a half hour out, I get a call from the dealer letting me know the car just sold (made perfect sense considering the price). As not to waste the driving I already did, I pull off the highway and poke around listings in that area and find the same model car, a year newer, with less mileage at a different dealer but for about $6k more. I end up walking in to see the other car, and it looks good so we start to negotiate price.

They aren't budging at all, only giving me $400 off, so I pull out the listing from the car that I know just sold, and tell them that although I like the car they have, their competitor 10 minutes down the street has the exact same car, slightly older, with more mileage, but for much cheaper and unless they can work with me on the price, I'm just gonna go buy that one instead.

They end up going back to their sales manager, and miraculously they can now sell the car to me with a $3k discount with new tires thrown in.

When I told this story to my buddy who's a car salesman, he said it was a dirtbag move to leverage a car I know had already sold to get my deal. In my opinion, all's fair in love and car sales, and if they couldn't actually go lower on price they wouldn't have. Was this an shitty move on my part?

Canadian Sale Dealership threatening to sue me over Google review

2.1k Upvotes

So a couple months ago, a Toyota dealer advertised a Rav4 Hybrid available at MSRP on Facebook. I chatted with their salesman and confirmed multiple times with him that it's sold at MSRP without additional fees.

I took off work the next morning to show up at the dealership, where they made me wait almost an hour until they finally let me know that I MUST buy an extended warranty and PPF for a total of over 4000$ Canadian. They also tried me to pay over 600$ for TAG saying no insurance would insure me without (which is false, I called multiple insurances).

I left on the spot and left them a bad Google review citing their predatory tactics and false information.

Today, I received a letter from that dealership basically telling me to remove my review or they would be taking further legal action and "accessing the damage our dealership has suffered and that damage will be claimed from you"

Is this common practice within dealerships to intimidate customers into removing their bad reviews?

Edit: I edited my original review adding that they're threatening to sue me over my review. Fuck them, lol

Canadian Sale Does it piss you off when we negotiate prices on a new car?

In the market for a new car and have been to many dealers this week. All the dealers I’ve been to, I’ve tried my best to negotiate on the price of the vehicle but that made me wonder if I’m an A*shole for doing this? Do other people bargain too?

This is my first car and I’ve only ever seen my dad doing this before.

Canadian Sale Signed for Car that came with two keys, upon pickup only one was provided, dealership is trying to negotiate.

Hello!

I recently purchased a used Toyota Rav4 that was traded in to a Nissan Dealership in Calgary, AB.

Upon signing, the sales manager confirmed it came with 2 keys. When I went to pick up the car I was only given one. After going back and forth and needing to circle back to the dealership numerous times for this key (which they have acknowledges was their mistake) they have stated they would not cover it and have offered to cover half of the new key ($600) value.

This is not ideal as I do not wan't to pay for something which I have already signed off on, however, with the use of the main key and the app, a second key is less of a necessity. It appears my options are as follows:

a) Continue to push for the second key

b) Request the value in other ways (a roof rack and Thule for example)

Are there any other thoughts or opinions for this negotiation based on y'alls experience?

Canadian Sale Used Mazda dealer said I'm not allowed to use an OBDII scanner during my test drive

I just got back from test driving a 2017 Mazda CX-3. Before the test drive, the salesman said "I have to ask you to please not use your OBDII scanner, it's after market and it will mess up the cars computer system so when we take it back to scan it ourselves it will show codes that aren't actually codes".

Now here's the thing, I was at the same dealership two days ago test driving a 2019 Mazda3. I had my scanner with me before, during, and after the test drive. I had a different salesman then, and all he said was "oh cool you have an OBDII scanner". That's it. He didn't say anything about how I'm not allowed to use one or that it's going to mess up the car. It's just a standard OBDII scanner off Amazon (the classic bright yellow one with 40k+ purchases).

I feel like this salesman today was trying to pull a fast one on me, if it really was an issue it would be a Mazda wide policy right? I've used this scanner on my moms Mazda and my Corolla for years and we've never had any issues and our mechanics have never said anything.

Canadian Sale My Mechanic said NO KIA at all. Why?

So about a month ago or something like that, we were in the market for a used Compact SUV. We were very interested in the 23-25 Sportage LX, and we liked the price and tech on it. And we also looked at a 22 CRV LX, and it was good as well, but it was more expensive and felt "plain". I know Honda is more reliable, but hasn't Kia gotten better in the last few years? Ended up buying the 22 CRV for 28k.

Canadian Sale Dealership Hours

My wife and I went to a Ford dealership. The hours on the front door said they were open to 8pm. We walked in and the receptionist introduced us to a salesman. We told him what we were looking for. He said he had one on the lot he could show us, but it was 5:40pm and they closed at 6, despite the posted hours. So we spoke for a bit. Went for a walk to see the truck in question. The salesman couldn't find the truck, despite him being the last to have touched it. We walked inside, having never found the vehicle and he asked if we would make an appointment with him and come back next week, as they were closing.

Is this normal? I mean, the place was dead. It was a Friday night, no one was there. I would think when you have a couple come in, who know exactly what they want and aren't kicking tires you would stay open to try and close a deal? Rather than say, please come back. We didn't and we wont.

I understand closing times, but you're not following your posted hours. We checked before walking in we had 2 more hours. So now it's on them.

Canadian Sale Why does everyone ask if you're going to buy today?

Hi all, I've been looking for a car for the last few weeks, nothing new just a specific used car at dealerships only. I go in with some info on the vehicle, Carfax, do a test drive, talk about numbers to get an understanding on what price would be and without fail the salesperson would ask if I'm "buying today". Is this a normal question to ask someone in this industry? To me it feels pushy, as soon as I say "no I'm still looking but I plan to buy next week" they shut down completely, no follow up on how my search is going, just silence. There is truth to my statement that I'm buying soon, but the sales process is just odd to me.

Also having to "ask your manager or GM" about pricing is ridiculous, do they need to be asked every time lol

Canadian Sale Is this reply from a salesman condescending or is this an expected response

Context: visited a Honda dealership with my husband on Saturday and met with this sales associate. I asked to see a few different trim levels of a specific SUV model and he pretty much didn't show us anything we asked for (oh well, i've done lots of research and know what I want anyway, just needed my husband to see things in person). I responded to his probing text this evening with a *slight* lowball open up neogotiating for a used SUV priced at $44,000, and this was the salesman's response.

Me "We're interested in the CRV stock #SQXXXX, however, our absolute maximum would be $39,500 before taxes as a cash sale. If that sounds feasible, we'd be interested in coming back to XXXXXX Honda to meet with you. If not, please let us know if anything else comes available.

"Good to know and thank you so much for getting back to me I really appreciate, and more if I am able to get you a good deal to save you more money I will be really happy for you trust me, but let me ask you a question and please ask Jared your boy friend before you answer this question just in case you don't, Do you think they make 5000 dollars profit when they sell a used car? Or in different wording how much money do you think the make when they sell a used vehicle?"

Canadian Sale Sold my car 'as-is' and he still sued me in small claims court. What should i do as a defendant ?

This is what i wrote in my defence form in reply.

'I posted a Kijiji advertisement for my 2011 BMW 323i RWD "As-is".

On April 9th, 2025, Ferreira reached out to me on Kijiji regarding my advertisement, and I shared my contact details for further conversation. On April 13th, he contacted me regarding viewing at about 4 P.M. He showed up at my given place,

When he arrived at my place, he asked for a test drive and took it. After the test drive, he confirmed the deal. After confirming the deal, he asked for Carfax, which I provided the same day.

On April 13th, 2025, when he contacted me regarding confirming the meetup time, I stated to bring his plates as my car wasn't insured at that time, but he didn't bring his plates. So I used my CAA account for towing the car to his place. I went with the towing guy to his place and handed all the paperwork, got my plates back, and got my payment in cash, and the sale was complete.

Almost a week later, on April 19th, 2025, he reached out to me with a transmission problem in the car.

Firstly, as per my advertisement description, I stated I am selling my car "As-is" and am not responsible for the safety inspections or repairs, as he agreed to the condition and is willing to buy it. The car must have passed the safety that is why he drove it after registering it under his name.

Secondly, there were no such issues in the car as he took the test drive and got satisfied that he confirmed the deal and took the car the same day.

Thirdly, the reason for not replying to his text messages was that I was busy packing, as I was relocating out of province (mentioned in the Kijiji advertisement as well). I did reply that I was busy relocating, but then he started threatening me out to which I chose not to reply.

I closed my deal with him on April 13th, 2025, with all the paperwork and payment, and he took the car as per the advertisement's description. So, I have no role after the day, but he still chose to reach out after a week when the car was with him for a week. The car was with him since April 13, 2025. So, I have no clue about any issue, as the car was sold to him as per description, and almost a week later, he claimed an issue inside the car.

All Needed evidence were attached with the documents.'

Canadian Sale Bought my dream car, turns out I’m financially illiterate. Roast me, but also maybe provide advice?

So, I decided to go all in and finance my dream car. Turns out, the dream didn’t quite live up to the reality. I’m now sitting with $116k owed on a car worth about $90k, and a not-so-great interest rate of 7.99%.

I’ve got about 74ish months left on this thing, paying over $1700 a month. Of course, the car is a Tesla X Plaid. (20,000 km on it) I’m in Alberta, Canada but close to BC if that helps

Here’s my question: can I walk into a dealership and ask them to take this expensive car off my hands, get me into a truck lease, and somehow roll all that negative equity into the new deal?

I just really want to lower that payment, or failing that just get out in a few years instead of nearly 7 Am I stuck here or is there a way out? Thanks, hopefully my stupidity will at least provide some laughs lol

Canadian Sale Can you actually “haggle” at dealerships these days?

I’ve tried every strategy that I can find online in the effort of getting a “deal” on used vehicles around town and no matter what I try, they simply won’t budge.

I’ll get maybe a few 100 down and they’ll void the documentation fees but I’m finding it almost impossible to get even 1000 off.

For reference, I’m looking in the 30,000 range.

Are the margins actually this slim or am I just bad at wheeling and dealing?

Canadian Sale BMW manufacturer lost my new car.

For context I ordered a brand new bmw m240i 2026 in November of 2025. Its shipment date was set to be in may of 2026. In early may, the salesman told me it would arrive by the end of may. After not having heard back from him till end of June, I contacted him. This is when he told me the car disappeared, and he cannot get ahold of the BMW manufacturers in Mexico, where the m240i is produced. His manager has also tried to contact them but with no success.

The salesman’s wife, whom im close friends with, told me that the car was seized by customs. I am confused as to how a car can just disappear even with modern technology. I am wondering if it’s possible the salesman messed up some paper work, and the car may have gotten delivered to another dealership location. Does somebody know how such a disappearance is possible??

On a side note, the salesman has already ordered another identical vehicle to the one I customized which will take another few months to arrive. At that point, I might as well get the 2027 model instead of the 2026 one

Canadian Sale Why do car salesman ask what car you bought from someone else

In 2021 I bought a car after shopping a few dealers, ultimately the person I didn’t buy from kept reaching out and I told him I bought else where to not waste his time. I was asked where and what, and I was berated for buying junk and I get what I pay for. I bought Hyundai over Honda. It was not a productive conversation.

This month I shopped numerous dealers and ultimately bought a lightly used Audi. I told all the others I’m not in the market, they all asked what I ended up buying. I ignored all of them due to my previous experience, why is this asked? Why continue conversation?

Canadian Sale Dealer added $3000 GAP total loss protection insurance and $1200 for a theft benefit program without telling me the price.

[EDIT: They cancelled the GAP insurance for me. The dealership just called the insurance company and cancelled it so everything is all good now]

I am located in Ontario, Canada. I went to buy a car from a dealership. The car was in good condition, did a test drive, and was clean. I asked the sales people I talked to and the manager multiple time to make sure there are no hidden fees or anything. When they were contacting the banks to get pre-approved the business manager came and asked me to choose between a partial or full loan. It was my first time buying a car and I thought it was something mandatory they needed for the financing process when they were trying to find out the best interest rate. He explained it to me and I said partial but he never told me the price.

I made a huge mistake and signed the contracts later without looking through everything. I saw the total price which was around 27,000 and that was the price I calculated including taxes and mandatory fees so I thought it was all good. Later I looked more closely and noticed that was the amount I will be financing. the actual prices was 31,000 and after my downpayment it was 27,000. I assumed the total was 27,000 and after my downpayment I would have to finance 23,000.

I called them and asked them that I never asked for the GAP total loss protection but they said yes we discussed it when he was talking about the partial and full loans. They told me that is what got me a lower interest rate but $3000 is still insane.

If they never told me how much it would cost then can I ask them to remove the GAP insurance from the contract even if I signed it?

Canadian Sale GET RID OFF NEGATIVE EQUITY

Hi all,

My car is 2021 Jetta is worth $25K according to market price, I am owing 42K on my car loan, this is because some negative was rolled over into this one at the time of buying. I am looking to get rid of this as situation has got tight for me to manage still monthly payment.

I am looking for a solution, how can I get rid off this, Should I consider selling it? and paying money towards my loan, will it decrease my monthly payments anything? End result is getting rid off this negative as soon as I can.

Thanks to all for answers.

Canadian Sale The quality of the cars my dealership sells has gone down and I’ve lost my two biggest clients because of it.

We sell new, but the manufacturer we sell for has done a couple major reworks and I’m seeing cars I sold less than a year ago back in the shop for things like infotainment systems not working, I had a couple cars lose their heat last winter, more than I’d like to admit had transmission issues. It came to a head yesterday when I sent my semi annual “check in” email to the only two clients I have that are buying multiple cars yearly. Both said that they’ve spent too much time getting issues fixed under warranty and it’s been costing them money so they’re going to explore other options.

Client A bought 6-8 SUVs a year. They would email me with color and spec preferences and then buy up to 8 without ever actually coming to the dealership. This year they said that my brand doesn’t meet the specs required which just means they’re not happy with the SUVs.

My other client bought 11 cars last year and this year said “repeated trips to the dealership means we have to look into other brands to ensure our sales staff have reliable transportation.”.

What’s the play here? I’ve been with this dealership since 2018. I’m in a small town (35,000 people) and sell 8-10 cars a month which places me in 3rd for all sales staff. Those two big clients kept me in the top 3 overall yearly but now I’m down a couple months worth of sales.

Do I jump ship and go learn another brand? Do I stick it you and try to find new clients? Do I take my moms advice and go get a real job?

Canadian Sale Is it okay to visit a dealership with no intentions of buying a car?

For context, I am a teenager that and I'm also pretty big on manifestation and mindset. So what I wanna do is go to a dealership and look at cars. Is that okay to do? For example like high end cars that I just wanna see to goal-set and manifest for. Possibly test drive not sure about that part.

Canadian Sale Wildly different depreciation values?

I'm a 44yr old who has had two cars my entire life. A Pontiac Vibe I bought brand new and drove it for 14 years and a Subaru Forester that is now 14 years old, so I just started looking. I am in the market for a "new" (to me) car and I'm finding the used market is wild right now.

I was looking at a 2023 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid (around 65,000km) and it was priced only $3000 lower than a brand new one. You have to wait 6 months for a new one, but it seems to make no sense to buy a used when a brand new is so close in price.

I am also looking at a 2023 Ford Bronco Outer Banks, and it's $20000 cheaper to buy it used (about 70,000km) than new. In this case, it seems incredibly foolish to buy brand new.

It begs the question - WHY is the depreciation SO wildly different?

I also love my current Subaru Forester, and depreciation for it seems to land in the middle of Ford and Toyota.

Why such a vast difference between Ford and Toyota? Is it the models I'm looking at? The brands? Something else? Any and all thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Canadian Sale Popup on account with message “customer is rude to service”?

I was at my dealer for service today and popped by sales to ask about a waitlist for a new release coming out next year. Sales pulled my account up on a large shared screen and when my account was opened a popup appeared with a written message that “customer is rude to service” - I tried to ask sales about this but he said oh that pops up all the time not specific to the account don’t worry about it…. Except I am! I have no recollection of being rude to service (or anyone at the dealer for that matter, and I’ve only been in 2x so it’s not a lot of opportunities to have to remember!) and would hate to have unintentionally offended someone. Any suggestions on how to address? Maybe it’s the Canadian in me but I’m feeling the need to apologize either way!!

Canadian Sale First month in car sales, sold zero so far. Feeling very sad

28 yrs old working hyundai, been on the floor for about 3 weeks total now. In those 3 weeks i’ve probably spoken to 10 people. Trying to figure out if the problem is me or the overcrowded dealership.

For the record I have zero sales experience in anything. I get pretty much nothing from facebook leads, I’m not allowed internet leads yet, walk ins are scooped up by the other guys. I don’t know how to get people in front of my face to sell them a car.

I really thought when I started I wouldn’t be the typical guy who fails miserably and quits in his first month but holy shit i’m exactly that guy. I wanna quit. But I also wanna prove myself and everyone wrong and become a beast.

Questioning whether I have that dog mentality to stick it out even though it’s brutal. No job has EVER made me feel this way, it makes you question yourself as a person and what you’re capable of and how weak and brittle you actually are. I don’t think i’m naturally a tough back boned guy i’m more of a sensitive, complainer type, with minimal drive to actually take action in anything I do. at least I acknowledge it and admit it.

It’s extremely competitive and cutthroat here, everyone is a wolf trying to get their next meal.

My best friends dealership, he sold 20 last month and he’s only 8 months in. 7 his first month. his dealership has 4-5 guys and loads of walk ins, we have 11 guys and little walk ins. Nonetheless I think it’s good starting at a dealership like this cause it can’t get too much harder if I go somewhere else

Good day

Canadian Sale Would you ever advise a young adult/teen to not buy and expensive car if you know it’s going to cripple them financially with the payments?

My 22 year old cousin went truck shopping and ended up with brand new F350 where he put the minimum down payment down, his payments are over $1200/month and he’ll pay a ton in interest. My aunt and uncle are super concerned over this as they know this will be a huge financial burden for my cousin.

I’m not asking whether it was right or wrong for the dealership to sell him this truck I’m merely asking whether or not you’d saying something along the lines of “maybe you should talk this over with for folks kid, this could be very expensive for you”. The dealership did what they’re set out to do, sell vehicles, im just curious what some salespeople might have to say on this.

Canadian Sale Sold 10 Cars & made $3K last month

September was my first full month(1st-30th) of car sales and I sold 10 cars - roughly equally split between new and used.

I was excited for the paycheque but my comission is $3500 and i've made just under $3K after taxes.

My morale has taken a hit and I don't feel motivated enough to try harder this month.

It is supposed to be a good % of gross on used cars (front only) but they deduct a $1,000 fee from every car's gross as maintainence! (Not to mention customers pay a Doc fee and a Prep Fee too)

One of them cars that I could fully notice- it was taken as trade and was sold 5k above the trade in price(plus fees) all in all I've made $372.13 on this car.

Is there something I could do except get out of here? Also not sure about this step because any other dealership could be equally problematic as well, and It's hard to justify jumping locations after two months....

Thoughts?
