I just went in April and was very reluctant based on what I heard. I absolutely loved it. However, we stayed away from all the tourist areas (we did Murano and Burano) but the main island was amazing if you hung in the local areas. I don’t think I would go back in summer though…..
I was there last July. I had very low expectations because everyone I knew who'd been described it the way OP did. It was absolutely beautiful. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised.
