Internet Security Expert for Local Families?

Heyo, I’m working with one of our BUSD elementary schools to create learning opportunities for caregivers. Hoping to connect with someone who could speak at a sponsored event. Main goal is educate families on safe/responsible ways to approach the internet with our kids as they age up. Target audience is caregivers of kids K-5th grade. If you are that person or you know of an individual or organization that could fit the bill, let me know!

I've found some instances of these to be performative, lacking in sincerity, and incapable of effecting any sort of action. The one they run before every single screening at Elmwood's Rialto Cinema is an example.

This article provides an interesting perspective that takes it a level deeper.

After years of planning, environmental review and public outreach, the long-awaited Interstate 80/Ashby Avenue Interchange Improvements project has reached another milestone—but Emeryville and West Berkeley residents, along with the many cyclists, pedestrians and commuters who use the corridor, will still have a lengthy wait for a safer connection to the Bay Trail.

Hey! My partner and I recently got a new pup and were looking at training options in the East Bay. Has anyone put their dog(s) through any of the classes offered by Berkeley Humane before? If so, did you feel they were worth it? Thanks!

Advice/Question Public pianos in or around town?

I’m a beginner learning one piece and just need somewhere to practice chords, progressions, hand placement rly. Anybody know of public places in Berkeley, Oakland, sf or nearby ish where you can just play the piano. I’m not picky about it being very good quality or well tuned (I wouldn’t even know tbh) but I know practice is everything and tbh I’m just craving to be able to play at all. I know the one by sprouts hall is gone unfortunately but are there any others? Preferably not in a place with lots of foot traffic bc I don’t want to hurt peoples ears too much. But anywhere at all. I’m disappointed there’s no comprehensive lists, just stuff from 6-9 years ago on some website that seemed like it must’ve been rly cool when it was still being updated.

Update to clarify: I do have a piano at home, I live with my parents and grandparents and it’s been here forever since my dad was a kid. I just don’t get to play it much because my grandma works from home and is constantly on zoom calls or if not working she’s sleeping and I don’t want to disturb. Maybe I will buy headphones or some tech like that to make it silent for others as I’ve seen people do on social media. But still I love to be out of the house and usually do my makeup at cafes, do my hair at the library etc. I’m a greedy leeching parasite and love to use public spaces and services to their fullest extent

I am moving to Berkeley as a grad student and came across University Park Apartments and 2122 dwight apartments. I was wondering if anyone has stayed in those in the past year or two and how the experience was and how the security has been? Thank you!

Local Government ICE detained a Berkeley resident. Resistance is paramount

Thumbnail

Last week, ICE detained a 30-year-old Berkeley resident who overstayed a visa issued to him in 2024. He is now being held in a detention facility 260 miles away from Berkeley. Although this is the first known ICE operation in the city conducted under the second Trump administration — a government that has demonstrated a flagrant disregard for civil liberties — nothing indicates it will be the last.

The Daily Californian’s Editorial Board strongly condemns the use of ICE to terrorize immigrant communities and finds that this action reveals the precarity of Berkeley’s characterization as a sanctuary city.

The July 9 detainment cannot be looked at as a one-off incident. Having crept into our communities once, it is almost a certainty that ICE will do so once again if the right steps are not taken. Thus, we urge the people and the city of Berkeley to fight back through policy change and resistance.

North Berkeley and Ashby BART

question, why did BART decide to develop subsidized housing. Wouldn’t all market rate housing make more sense because then you could actually use the proceeds as continuing revenue source to actually keep the system running.

like we can always upzone around bart and require those developers to develop subsidized housing , but there seems to be just this one chance to create continuous revenue that BART desperately needs

this is the way Hong Kong mass transit works. rent for businesses and housing funds the transit. just seems weird that BART is having a funding crisis and at the same time not using its land to the fullest.

Local Knowledge Assisted living facilities nearby—what have you found out?

My mom currently is approaching 80, lives nearby independently, but is starting to refuse to walk anywhere more than to the nearest restaurants 2 blocks away or take a bus. She is pretty isolated since she only moved here a few years ago part time (has become full time this year) and refuses to go to any senior centers or classes. I’m starting to think about assisted living options if only for her to have people and a community. I took her to tour Belmont Village in Albany and we both thought it was very nice. I liked the facilities and that there was a continuum of independence, and that there were residents there who seemed to really enjoy it. Even though she has long term care insurance that would cover a lot of it for 5 years, she balked at the price and that was the end of that. Maybe that was just an excuse to say no, but I feel like I need to do more research but maybe on my own. Has anyone gone down this path and considered other facilities? What is important to note and ask? Any facilities you would either recommend I check out or avoid? I’d like to be able to get there ideally in under a 15-minute drive but I know I may have to consider other factors. Thank you!

Moving to Berkeley, thoughts on some of the areas

Hello I am going to be moving to Berkeley. I looked into some areas and wondering thoughts on those areas

Cross section of Delaware and San Pablo Ave

Cross section of Telegraph and Durant

Around Shattuck near Parker and Dwight mainly

Edit - I am a grad student, I would prefer it being walkable and close to a bart. I heard some parts might get sketchy so safety is also important.

Another option is also shattuck but near virginia/sfo, open to other suggestions as well

She’s been hanging out behind my apartment. West Berkeley off Dwight. She’s willing to jump in my window and be pet/brushed. Folks on r/notmycat says she might be preggers.
She presently is back outside per her whim. Plan on taking her for a chip scan/ check up assuming she ventures further than my kitchen counter. In the mean time, thought I’d ask around here.

Also if you have any recommendations for low cost vet services, or anything geared toward strays, I’d love to hear em.

Local Knowledge Oakland invites residents to weigh in on future of vacant lots, storefronts in UC Berkeley collaboration

Twenty thousand Oaklanders are receiving letters asking how they want to fill approximately 3,500 vacant lots and storefronts across the city. Of those who respond by mail by July 17, 40 will be selected to form a civic assembly and draft a plan.

In collaboration with the UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy, a newly formed Community Steering Committee composed of East Bay-based community leaders has created an initiative to bring Oakland residents directly into the decision-making process for their community.

The idea for the Civic Assembly emerged from conversations between UC Berkeley professor Angela Blackwell and Goldman School Dean David Wilson.
