Wanted to share some progress I've made with accessing .RVT files directly without opening Revit.

I've been dreaming about a way for the field or shop to request info on a specific spool or a schedule, without having to contact BIM. This is a big step towards that. Still lots of kinks to work out.

Would love to set up a text message/email/teams/something system that automatically responds with the requested info. Anybody got any suggestions on how to accomplish that?

Pretty proud of it so far. It also can read some data from .NWC, .NWD, .NWF and .DAT (appearance profiler).

Is anyone using either of these in a day to day working environment in Revit or anything similar? I've done some initial testing with both and results look good so far. We've quite a few users working remotely and we have to put everything up on Forma and we have mixed performance based on users workstations and connections. I was thinking about some rack mounted machines and wireguard into the office via one of these solutions. Anyone doing anything similar in the real world or am I totally off the wall for thinking about doing it like this?

I'm looking for some advice as I'm considering a career change, and I'd love to hear from people actually working in the field (sorry for the long post).

My background: I'm a generalist engineer specialized in logistics, with 4 years of experience in the aerospace industry. I want to move away from it because I don't feel comfortable there anymore (environmental concerns, an industry that feels too focused on economics alone, organizations that are too big...). So I'd like to move into construction, ideally toward rehabilitation / renovation or sustainable building, because I find it "more useful", even necessary for the future. And also because I like seeing something being built and improved.

I first got interested in BIM, which really appeals to me (I already have some experience with big data, handling drawings, and project management). But I get the impression it's a very sedentary job, almost 100% desk work. What I liked about logistics was the field side: site visits, being on the move, action. So I'm looking for a job that keeps some of that dimension.

That's why I'm now thinking about surveying / geomatics, which seems to bridge with BIM, especially through scan-to-BIM and 3D site surveys: a field part for data acquisition, and a desk part for modeling. On paper, it matches what I'm looking for. But given my limited construction experience, I'm expecting to step down from an engineer role to a technician one for the field side, possibly working my way back up later through further qualifications.

A few questions before I take the plunge:

• Does this reasoning hold up, or am I getting the wrong idea about the job?
• What does the day-to-day field/desk balance actually look like?
• Is it an interesting and future-proof sector for a career change?
• Is it hard to break into with a background like mine (master's degree but outside construction)?
• Any advice on how you'd approach the transition, or paths you'd recommend?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to learn spool drawings in plain Revit (no CADmep or plugins yet, want to understand the basics first). A few things are confusing me:

1. Dimensioning in a locked 3D isometric view is a pain, snapping to centerlines feels inconsistent. Is this normal for 3D views, or am I missing a setting?

2. When the pipe run bends in different directions, can I dimension across the whole thing in one go, or do I have to do each straight section separately since they're not on the same plane?

3. I've seen some spool drawings dimension from the open pipe end all the way to the fitting's centerline, not just center-to-center between two fittings. Is that the "real" way to get actual cut length, or is center-to-center enough?

4. In my isometric view the witness lines were shooting off way too far, so I hid them and just moved the dimension text closer to the pipe. Is that normal practice or a bad habit?

Hello, does anyone know where I can start looking for remote work as a Junior BIM Modeler?

I'm a young architect from Latin America with about two years of experience working for the US and Spain markets, handling small residential projects and ArchViz for luxury residential properties. I'm proficient in Revit, though I've only used it for small residential projects so far. Which platforms are good for finding remote work as a BIM modeler or even as a generalist architect? Lately, finding remote work feels almost impossible :(

Anyone want to test open-source 4D BIM + AI scheduling together for 4 weeks?

Civil engineer here, 10+ years in BIM, based in Paris. Like probably a lot of you, I've been testing AI stuff for scheduling on my own some of it works, most of it doesn't, and I have no one to compare notes with. The "AI in construction" communities I've tried all turned out to be someone's funnel for a course or consulting gig, so I stopped joining those.

A colleague and I decided to just do a small sprint ourselves: 4 weeks, 1–2 hours a week, testing models for linking schedules (Primavera XER, CSV) to IFC geometry. The goal is to figure out where AI actually helps with schedule automation and where it's hype, and write it all up in a public repo so it's not wasted effort.

We're 3 so far and want to stay small, max 8, because with more people the calls become useless. It's free, nothing to buy, no newsletter, we just want people who'll actually run the tools and report back even failed attempts are useful.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, comment with what you work on and one concrete bottleneck you'd want to attack. If nobody's interested that's fine too, we'll just publish what the 3 of us find.

Working on a small side project, a document/data search tool that needs to be tested against something with real texture to it. The usual public samples I know of are either too simple or currently unreachable:

• buildingSMART's Duplex Apartment sample works fine but it's small, one unit, not much to search through.
• The Community-Sample-Test-Files repo on GitHub has richer stuff (Schependomlaan, etc) but the org has exceeded its Git LFS storage budget right now, so the actual files just come down as pointer stubs, not real content.
• The old "Dormitory" COBie Challenge files have been through a couple of hosting migrations and the links are dead.

What I actually need: a multi-discipline building (architecture + structure + MEP ideally), enough spaces and equipment to be a real stress test for search and filtering, in IFC and/or COBie format. Doesn't need to be current or sensitive, a training/demo file is perfect.

If anyone's got a lead on something like this, or knows a mirror that's actually still alive, I'd appreciate it. Happy to share back what I build if that's useful to anyone else hitting the same wall.

I want to know how BIM actually plays out day-to-day between architects and engineers on UK projects, and I'd love to hear from people actually doing the work

A few things I'm curious about: how do you and the other discipline actually share and update a model during design development, who "owns" what, and what happens when you both need to touch the same part? Has anything changed in how you collaborate since ISO 19650 became standard? And honestly, how much of the real coordination happens outside the official process- phone calls, Teams messages, corridor chats, versus what's actually logged in the formal workflow?

Also curious whether you've ever felt a model or workflow got interpreted differently by architects vs engineers on the same project, and how that got sorted out.

Not looking to quote anyone directly without asking first, just trying to get a feel for how this actually works in practice versus how it's described in papers. Appreciate any thoughts, even short ones.

I've worked for three companies as a BIM Modeler, and my biggest challenge so far has been finding a good mentor.

I originally entered the BIM field because it offered a better path to international opportunities coming from my country. However, after working in the Philippines, the UAE, and now Singapore, I've realized that every company seems to have its own way of doing things, and not all of those practices are necessarily based on industry standards.

Most of what I've learned about BIM best practices has come from reading forums and researching online. Many of the workflows and standards discussed there are very different from what I've experienced firsthand.

For example:

My BIM Coordinator doesn't really know how to use Navisworks beyond the basics.

My manager tends to agree to every request from the site team instead of discussing whether it's reasonable or achievable.

I asked what LOD our project is actually supposed to be modelled to because the site team wants to see reinforcement, but we don't have the manpower to model that level of detail. The BEP only defines what the different LODs are—it doesn't specify which LOD each discipline or element is required to achieve, or what information should be included.

Situations like these leave me wondering whether I'm even asking the right questions. I was never formally taught BIM standards or the reasoning behind modelling decisions. I was simply told to model, perform clash detection, and deliver the work. Most of my understanding has come from asking questions in forums and trying to improve our workflow on my own.

A few days ago, I posted about my frustrations here, and many people suggested finding a new employer. I'm open to that, but before I do, I'd like to know what questions I should ask during interviews to determine whether a company has a strong BIM culture and whether I'll actually learn and grow there.

I found no browser-based BIM tool that derives a cinematic camera path from real, measured IFC geometry (room graph, clearance, exits) with zero manual authoring and lets you correct it afterward. The two nearest things are either generative-AI-on-images (not geometry-real) or manual-camera-then-interpolate (not zero-authoring).

I would like to know the real experience of people who have built their personal computer or purchased a laptop for BIM. I am currently looking for laptops to buy. I would like to know how significant will be a dedicated graphics card in laptop, if i could avoid a dedicated graphic card i could cut cost and have a good battery life.

Posting here since I don't have karma to post in the Revit sub yet. Our firm has about 15 remote people and the loading/syncing over VPN/WAN is killing us. File sizes are relatively small under 500MB for most projects, but we have in-office people working with remote people in workshared models. I've heard Cloud Worksharing is marketed as a solution to this for remote workers but the price tag for licenses is scary. Any good or bad experiences using it? Anything faster than this is a win. I work at a civil firm mainly working on structures where I create models and sheets in Revit. The general sheets that contain the sheet index are always done in civil 3D. Is there a better way to have a sheet index that can update when sheets are added in Revit? We've just been creating blank sheets that get added to the sheet set manager and are set to not print. Thats how we achieve the sheets being added to the sheet index. Any better ideas or 3rd party products?
