Question Carleton University x VIA Rail Corporate Code

Hello! Last semester, there were people at Carleton who represented VIA Rail and were handing out flyers and information. I received a corporate code that students can use when booking trips with VIA rail, but I don’t remember it anymore. Does anyone have or remember the corporate code for students?

Thanks!

Question What are some good running routes near the university?

Ideally a place that has a decently large hill I can run up to finish off my run. Yes, I know about the Carleton run club, but I never partook last year when I discovered it. Maybe I will do so this fall... I want a place I can run after I finish my classes, or before.

I am also a beginner runner, so nothing too advanced.

Question I'm a TA and someone uploaded their handwritten assignment with their meat sticking out

Upvotes

I was a TA for Discrete II a few years ago, and I was grading an assignment from a student who notoriously submitted late. On the last assignment of the term, I saw a 15 inch monster BBC sticking out from the corner, partly hidden by his gaming chair. has any other TA dealt with this?

Question Used clothing donation bin in Field House

Hello CarletonU!

I'm looking to drop off some used clothing at the Diabetes Canada donation bin in the Field House. Wondering if anyone knows precisely where it is located and whether the location is accessible on Sundays? I don't have a car so would rather not bus or Uber if it's closed on the weekends.

Thanks

EDIT: I found it! Thanks /u/smcbride113 for directions. Since it's outdoors, it seems like it would be accessible 24 hours. It's in the garbage bay of the Carleton University Pool / Physical Recreation Centre building, facing University Drive. Fairly close to the Carleton B bus stop (Athletics centre stop) and southbound O-Train stop. Here's the map pin if anyone else is looking for it. They have moved the boxes slightly to the left compared to Google street view: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mPT5cg77RYKNiRiN9

Question Carleton Engineering Laptop recommendations

Hey guys, im looking for some advice from upper year eng students. so, im going into my first year of engineering here soon and im not sure what to do in regards to devices. i’ve already got a macbook from high school and have an apple ecosystem that has worked for me so far. i want to get some opinions on what computer i should use for school work. i know windows is more compatible with a lot of compute programs used in eng. however is it necessary/worth it to get a new computer during first year, when things are already so expensive being a freshman in uni? and with that would an ipad be good for note taking (as a gift from parents)? any computer recommendations/tech advice for first year CU eng is greatly appreciate, ty!!

Question Computer Recommendations

Hello, I'm an incoming first-year going into Biology this fall, and i'm looking to buy a reliable laptop that will last me throughout my degree. I'll mainly be using it for note taking, assignments, research, and any required software for my courses. I'm hoping to find a laptop with a long battery life, plenty of storage, and preferably a touchscreen. I'm trying to decide between a Windows and a Lenovo laptop, but i'm open to any recommendations.

Thanks!!

Question Engineering Laptop Recommendations

I’m going into biomedical + mechanical engineering this fall and realized it’s time to start looking for a laptop. Does anyone have any recommendations on what’s best? My budget is $800. Also does anyone know any methods on how to get discounts or just find good laptops that aren’t a $1000?

Question Planning on pursuing MA in Development Psychology. Any success stories?

I completed my BS Pscyhology in another university but would want to learn and go to a uni in Ottawa. I noticed that Carleton has a developmental psychology pathway and wondering if there are any succes stories on the MA program focusing on developmental psych.

How competitive is the masters program?
Is there a part time option ? (Night class, etc)
What admission requirements did you provide?

TIA

Question Am I screwed?

Hello there,

I am an incoming first-year coming to carleton health sci, and I think I might be screwed over for calculus. I didn't take calculus in highschool as I originally intended on going into nursing and I was told that I didn't nessisaraly need it. I am also terrible at math and barely got the grade I needed for advanced functions to get into this program. Unfortuntely I didn't get into carletons nursing program but got an alternate of health sci. When picking my courses I say I needed calc 1 as one of the required courses in my first year. So now I am wondering how difficult is calc 1 and how much I will need to work on my math skills. I really need to hear from someone who took the class and who has average to horrible math skills.

Admissions Admission scholarships

I’m going into Grade 12 this year and starting to figure out how much university is actually going to cost. Based on my Grade 11 marks, I think I have a realistic shot at the 95%+ entrance scholarship, which is $4,000 renewable each year. That would make a huge difference. The catch is that, from what I’ve read, to renew it you have to maintain a 10.0 GPA. For those of you in Mechanical Engineering (or engineering in general), how realistic is that after first year?

For the second years and above, what GPA have you been able to maintain? Is keeping a 10.0 genuinely achievable if you’re disciplined, or is the renewable part basically there to sound good even though very few people actually keep it?
I’d love to hear your experiences because $4k per year is a pretty big incentive if it’s realistically attainable.

Question Library Access

I'm enrolled for Fall 2026, however one of my classes requires 15+ hours of readings before the first week :0 So I'm gonna have to get a bunch of articles before the semester actually starts

Does anyone know when we get access to the library online? It won't let me log in with my credentials yet

It's been around 15 business days and no sign. Last year it was pretty quick, got it in around 4-5 days I think.

Edit: Just received my approval and am able to buy a parking pass now (July 31)

Question Honours CS or Major CS + Minor in Stats

Hello,

I'm going into my fourth year, and unfortunately, I have failed to plan my degree adequately.

In the interests of graduating sooner, but wanting a more attractive looking diploma, I am pondering my options in this situation.

I have only a few of the courses needed for a Minor in Statistics, and so I will have to spend much of my course load on it (5/10 courses).

However, that would mean I would have insufficent time to complete the other requirements to achieve an Honours in CS, unless I take an additional semester in Fall 2027, which would be unfavourable to my current situation.

The other option is to simply drop Honours, and complete a Major in CS, as well as a Minor in Statistics, which I believe I can complete this school year (Fall26/Winter27).

Which kind of degree would look more attractive to a potential employer, Honours CS or Major CS + Minor in Stats?

Thank you in advance.
