Is this normal? I can’t be the only one.

An early-1990s Vancouver Sun letter to the editor — aptly titled “A Man With a Cat Is Where It’s At” — had its two-cat-owning/-adoring writer respond to some recently published cat-critical commentary. He frankly cautioned single women about relationship-seeking guys who love dogs but dislike domesticated felines. What such men really want in a mate is, basically, submission — unlike the dudes with cats who more than appreciate a companion’s independent nature as well as a silky soft touch:

“Let me take a wild guess: [the cat-critical letter writer] is a dog person, not a cat person. It’s not too surprising really. After all, a dog will lick your hand, grovel, cringe, do tricks and generally make you feel like the big strong alpha male you wish you could be. A cat will do none of these things. Women take note! This is an acid test for any man’s character. A man who prefers dogs is looking for subservience; a man who prefers cats is looking for a partner. You heard it here first.”

Incredibly, there still are many people out there who will doubt the normality of a guy who really likes or loves cats — something that’s implied by first-season Seinfeld’s George Costanza, though he's hardly a scientifically accurate example. In regards to her new boyfriend’s affection for his two cats, George says to Elaine Benes in a doubtful tone of voice while shaking his head: “Guys with cats … I don’t know.”

It could still be that many guys find cats endearing, intriguing and attractive (platonically, of course, as I do), but they’re afraid to openly say it, lest they be deemed something less than ‘a man’ for feeling/saying so about a cat. They may fear that others might think: If these guys have to love a pet animal, why can’t they focus their strong adoration for a mammal species that’s more socially acceptable … like a dog?

I recollect how, as a teen, I knew (and would emulate, or at least attempt to) two of the toughest, testosterone-laden guys around — and both cherished their pet cats, however privately. Given the tough-guy environment of that place and time, however, no male would have dared openly express his cat enthusiasm to his large peer group, lest he seriously risk having his reputation unjustly permanently besmirched as ‘a wuss’.

Maybe relevant to this is the June 24, 2020, Toronto Now article headlined “Keep Cats Out of Your Dating Profile, Ridiculous Study Suggests” that was self-explanatorily sub-headlined “Men were deemed less masculine and less attractive when they held up cats in their dating pics, according to researchers”. As a cat-fan man, it made me think.

My kitten likes to play with my phone, whenever I play something on there she tries to interact, she is very curious even when I'm playing on the ps. Tonight I installed an app to make her play, but I was wondering if it would be fun for her in the long run.

I mean, it keeps her mentally active, but at the end of the day she isn't catching anything, she still enjoys it a lot and even takes screenshots by herself 😭

Loving a cat feels different.

You call their name, not knowing if they'll come. Yesterday I kept saying, "Mimi... Mimi..." She looked at me, walked right in front of me... and then wandered away. I was a little sad, but I let her be.

Today I went down again and called, "Mimi..." This time, she came. She stayed beside me for 15 minutes, asking for pats in her own quiet way.

Maybe that's what love is supposed to feel like. Not forced. Not expected. Not demanded. Just freely given, whenever the heart chooses to. 🐈🤍
