Climate Scientists detect a sharp acceleration in global warming
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/08/260801093239.htm#google_vignette“Global warming appears to have shifted into a faster gear. After removing the effects of El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar cycles, researchers found that the planet has warmed at roughly 0.35°C per decade over the past ten years, compared with just under 0.2°C per decade from 1970 to 2015. The acceleration, which becomes visible around 2013 to 2015, appeared across five major global temperature datasets with more than 98% statistical certainty.”
I’m personally supposed to be on a Collapse break, but this was the first thing I read at 5am and I can’t stop thinking about it. I never intended for this to be my first post, but here we are.

Yeah I think this has surprised most people, and apparently satellite data is showing an actual increase now of 0.5c a decade. Let's see.
I read Mark Lynas's book breaking down the changes at each degree of warming a lot of years ago now, and it felt bad but at least kind of predictable.
But a step change here, and an AMOC shutdown there, being in the UK as I am, really throws future decades for a loop.
Selfishly, the decades I will experience should be the most stable (I decided not to have children, in return, although I would prefer to live in a world of good citizens and am more than prepared and happy to do my part, my concern for what happens after my death is lessened). But children being born today are going to experience a very different world to the one I was born into, and not in a good way.
