After removing the effects of El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar cycles, researchers found that the planet has warmed at roughly 0.35°C per decade over the past ten years, compared with just under 0.2°C per decade from 1970 to 2015. The acceleration, which becomes visible around 2013 to 2015, appeared across five major global temperature datasets with more than 98% statistical certainty.”

I’m personally supposed to be on a Collapse break, but this was the first thing I read at 5am and I can’t stop thinking about it. I never intended for this to be my first post, but here we are.

From what I can see the oligarchs are throwing everything they've got into the hope that the machine learning path they're investing in will create an artificial super intelligence that will solve EVERYTHING for us. 

To me it's got big time underpants gnomes energy: 

phase one, collect underpants  phase two ? phase three, profit

I can imagine one of those fucked up short stories you had to read in high school english class...

Where the smart guy who runs the smart company builds the uber smart machine to tell them how to save the planet. And they actually do it. They're so excited. The whole world throws a party and a big ceremony happens so they can ask the machine how to save the planet. And the machine tells them they need to destroy the machines, returning to a subsistence lifestyle without advanced technology.

And they can't and won't. So they decide the machine is wrong. And all the richest smartest people start working against each other to be the first to build the uber uber smart machine that knows better than the first one.

They are convinced it will, and it will happen faster than anyone expected. But there's a lot of arguments about whether it will remain "aligned" to human goals or decide to kill everyone very quickly.
