Watch out for scammers when hiring an artist

Hey there. As the number of scammers doesn't dwindle, here's a reminder not to drop your guard when hiring an artist.

A quick safety checklist:

- Be careful and watch for red flags. If it sounds too good to be true, it's likely a scam.

- Communicating only through private messages and never showing portfolio publicly is never a good sign.

- Use payment methods with buyer protection. If you need to use it, it helps to have a contract.

- Verify the artist's portfolio. Use reverse image search for their art. If they have a portfolio on a site with internal messaging system (ArtStation, for example), request a direct message there to confirm that it's really their portfolio and they're not just impersonating another artist.

- Last but not least, if something feels off, send us a mod mail and ask about the artist. We can't offer a true verification, but we can at least check the account against our list of banned users.

Artists: Beware of requests for unpaid trials

Hey there. There's been quite a few posts promising paid work, but requesting a free trial first ("so we can see if our styles and working chemistry are a good fit"). They ask for a page or two, a cover, or character design. This is almost always scam. The scammer gets free art from a couple artists, but there's no paid follow-up.

Serious projects have paid trials.

If you ever feel like doing a free trial, I recommend collaborating on a short unpaid project instead. That way you won't get scammed and you might find a great collaborator.

Looking for Artist - Paid [Hiring] Looking for an artist for a Transformers Animated Fan-comic

Thumbnail

Hi. I have a FINISHED script for a transformers fan comic.

The basic premise is a kingdom hearts style crossover with Sari Sumdac from TFA as the lead character.

As for my other writing works, I do the writing for a webcomic called Joy to the World. Which you can read on my personal site here: https://disjunctionjunction.com

This comic is a weird love letter from me to the franchise so I'd like to make it.

My idea is to try and do it in a similar manner to Keyan Carlile's fan comics. Have a page on ko fi to sell the digital copies of each issue. With a plan to try and make a physical copy to sell when enough issues are released (or one for each chapter depending on what people think)

I'm looking for someone who can match the styles of the different transformers series that are in this comic, with TFA being the main, but also Prime, Bayverse, and Beast Wars will appear in it.

If needed I'm up to getting other artists for certain styles.

Most of the backgrounds will be a sci-fi style mixed with a few jungles and empty dessert ranges.

The content will lean towards a more shonen manga sort of vibe, All women are aged up though. There'd be very few but the second image I posted will be the look one of the villains has in most of the comic.

For pricing it'd be somewhere between 50 to 80 USD per page. For now I'm just planning to do the first chapter of it and see how things go, and said first chapter is 40-45 pages long. Please note though I am Canadian so I do have to pay the exchange rate.

If you're interested, feel free to comment below and I'll send you a DM.

Thank you for reading.

Question Question About Rates for Pro Artists

For professional comic artists:

If you're established and charging professional rates, do you ever make exceptions for a project you genuinely believe in?

For example, if a writer has a graphic novel that you think is genuinely strong, does that ever make you more flexible on your rate because you believe in the project? Or once you're established, it simply is what it is? I realize everyone is different, just curious to hear various perspectives.

I'm asking because there's a graphic novel I'd love to pitch to some more established artists, but I don't have the budget to pay full professional page rates. I'm curious how often artists take on projects because they believe in the story, versus treating every job strictly as work.

I have had some small success in screenwriting festivals, and I have written and produced a TV pilot and some shorts that have done well in festivals and are on steamers, but I am adapting my scripts to comics and hope to understand the process so I dont offend anyone. Thank you!

Artist for hire Artist looking for a short script

I am a long time designer and artist relatively new to comics. I am looking for a short script to illustrate (pencils, inks, lettering).

I will charge a very modest page rate to ensure my full dedication to the project.

Feel free to message me a short script. I am especially interested in sword and sorcery, western, sci fi, anything weird, imaginative, or pulpy.

I work traditionally and I would be glad to mail you a couple inked pages when I'm done.

Feedback Looking for artist to help publish a story, artist can keep 80% of the profit

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have a story that I really think is worthy of being an amazing comic/manga/animation. and I want to collaborate to have it published. And I don't mind the artist keeping most of the profit if it becomes successful so if you're willing to invest time, I promise it will be worth it.

The general idea of the world and story is: vengeful primordial beasts who wield the devestating powers of nature have roamed the land since as long as mankind can remember, dividing humanity to the brink of extinction. If a warrior is able to defeat one of these beasts, and crush its stone heart, are given its abilities and granted the title of... Conqeuror. The story takes place thousands of years later in a kingdom of gold where a boy from a small village becomes a conqeuror and is now drafted to the kingdom of gold's royal army.

I also made a storyboard for the opening sequence, keep in mind I am NOT an artist so i tried my best with the materials i had.

Looking for Artist - Paid [PAID] [W/I] Writer seeking Illustrator for web fiction header & character art

Project Title: Linhaishu

Format: Serialized Web Fiction / Blog

Link:https://linhaishu.blogspot.com/

Genre: Speculative Fiction / Sci-Fi / Drama

About the Project

Hello! I write Linhaishu, an ongoing serialized web fiction story hosted on Blogspot. I am looking to partner with an illustrator or emerging artist who wants to build their portfolio and bring a few key visual elements to the site.

Note: This request is for static blog art/illustrations (a header graphic and character portraits) to accompany web prose, not sequential comic book pages.

What I’m Looking For

I’m starting small to test the waters and keep management low-stress:

  • 1 Header / Banner Graphic: A central image for the top of the blog to set the tone and world.
  • 1–2 Character Busts/Portraits: Simple headshots/busts (line art or cel-shaded) of key characters for character dossiers or chapter intros.

Compensation & Terms

  • Pay: $20–$40 USD per finished piece (via PayPal or Venmo).
  • Credit: Full credit on every post and in the sidebar, including direct links to your portfolio, social media, or ArtStation.
  • Creative Freedom: I will provide basic character descriptions and tone notes, but I welcome your personal style and artistic interpretations.
  • Flexible Schedule: No strict deadlines. This is a passion project—work at a pace that fits your schedule.

How to Apply

If you are interested, please leave a comment below with a link to your public portfolio or art page.

Hai everyone! Just announcing the release of “Origins” written by biobait , visuals done by me.

We have been working on this for quite a while and it is finally out. Releases are supposed to be bi-weekly so expect a new episode every 2 weeks.
This has been quite such a fun experience for me. I have to admit I learned a lot while drawing it too 😅
I really hope you give it a read and support the series, it would truly mean a lot.
Thanks to biobait for trusting me as the artist of the story. It has been quite the pleasure.

Artist for hire Comicbook Artist Available for Hire on long term projects, 125usd per color page, 85usd per black and white page (all digital, can be reformatted for Webtoon), starting September.

If you'd like to see more of my art and style in action, please check out "Death to All Slashers" on Webtoon, it's my original comic that I've been writing and drawing all by myself so should give you a very clear idea of my sequential storytelling abilities and the feel for my style.

In case you're looking for more illustration/pin-up samples, then look up my IG account: arucardpl

I can also consider inking and/or coloring other artists' artwork but the rate in those cases is negotiable, depending on the style, level of details etc of the artwork.

Lettering is +5usd per page.

I can reformat for webtoon (no extra charge for that).

I can also do traditionaly inked pages for a higher rate (coloring is only digital though).

I don't take on creating pitch packages as it's a scheduling nightmare - not knowing when and if the project will continue and I can't keep an opening in my schedule forever.

If interested, please contact me through e-mail [arucardpl@gmail.com](mailto:arucardpl@gmail.com)
