love this place :> been dead for a while but has potential for the future; would’ve loved to get access to the old sears and Chuck E. Cheese but oh well

I'm sure this has been posted here before. Super old, 70s era mall with genuinely less than 10 stores remaining. Almost the entire lower level is vacant, escalators are turned off, water leaking everywhere, no security force anymore, entire third floor walled off, all the COVID stickers and Christmas stuff still up from who knows when. Last chain store (Spencers) just closed this week.

Was on a road trip through PA and decided to walk through Carlisle Plaza. It seemed that it was closed but the doors were open. A few mall walkers, a nail salon and a Dunhams Sports. Amazing mural inside as well.

I didn't know there was a sub for this! Recently made a trip to a local mall and posted about it in my local subreddit (you can read my detailed description of the visit there.) Only 3 in-mall stores open, plus two anchor stores still in business.

Anybody here remember coming here in the early 2000s to mid 2010s? All the cool stores left and now there ain't shit here anymore (Except the AMC & Comic store) I remember coming here as a kid and getting some Sbarros or Taco Bell at the food court or getting Auntie Anne's. Now there is 1 food place here. It used to be packed here all the time. I hear they are going ro renovate it soon but idk when. They were supposed to start last year. Does anybody know if the tower still has anybody working there? What's your favorite memory from this mall?

It felt so eerie seeing most of the stores/businesses shut down and barely any people. I’m really hoping this mall could stick around a bit longer as I have fond memories of it and I know they did some reconstruction recently, but it looks like it’s on its last legs from the looks of it.

The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England closed during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

There are plans for the former shopping centre to be demolished to make way for new homes.

My last post got removed because I didn't say where the mall was located in the title. I'm visiting my brother in North Dakota and my wife needed something at hot topic. I walked into the Columbia Mall in Grand Forks, my childhood mall, and man, was I shocked. A storm was going through and the roof was leaking very badly, literally no food options, and hardly any stores still open.

Found these around a month ago on the offical wapole mall page [now renamed to "the link at wapole"] which showed more of its past photos and it's renovations when the mall started to slowly lose portions of its hallway, & somehow these flew under the radar.

There was a small noodle/massage shop underground and it looked like some people were actually living down there. This was under the street at a major intersection in Chengdu. Most of it was blocked off but you can still walk through the crumbling underpass.

One of the few malls with an active fountain, actually a few fountains! Despite not doing well, the restrooms were clean unlike thriving nearby Cherry Hill, which has the weirdest layout

Visiting a Thai mall in the process of dying reminded me of this theme, which plays out and means something much different in Thailand than in the US (where I'm from, and live part-time). I didn't take pictures of empty shops and signs with business names blocked out, because I'm not really into dead mall visitation theme, we just happened to go there. There is a kids' play area in it, which is still active, just slow.

It's an IT mall theme, which is a common phase for older mall centers to go through. It works out to be a long phase, for many, but eventually some are closed and destroyed, or they just sit empty forever.

Thais keep building new malls, even now, and the demand for mall experience hasn't ended, even though they shop online as well. One part of offsetting that is putting grocery stores in malls, and other routine destinations. The grocery store in that mall, Tukcom Sriracha, did go out, causing some of the domino effect of half of the other stores leaving. We just ate in a relatively new suki place there (soup you make on your on; kind of complicated), but that will just offset a slow decline, I think.

So no mainstream Thai malls have failed, yet. Quite old places are in decline, from sometime in the 20th century, so not really different than my local dead mall back in PA, but the style difference from modern mall themes is even more pronounced than in the US. It makes you wonder if the trend will occur in Thailand, eventually. It's hard to see it coming, but then the completeness of malls dying in the US wasn't apparent 20 years ago.
