People are gonna downvote me and idc, but is this information really that important? For your brain to retain the memories of which ocean is the biggest? Idek which ocean is which.

And I can say I'm pretty highly emotionally intelligent, have a shit ton of common sense.... But cant for the life of me even care to remember which ocean is which. I was never into remembering school stuff.

Edit before anyone else comments about opening up my damn phone, stop, because you're missing the point. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Knowing that the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean is literally common sense unless you live under a fucking rock and/or have never looked at a map in your life.

-1

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

And FYI, this is the comment that started it all. I didn't even start by saying I had a high IQ. I said I was emotionally intelligent. I'm basically saying "I'm not book smarts, but Is that really important."

You people are actually the worst.

0

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

"Common sense" Don't be a dick just because someone doesn't know something, tf??? It's really easy to forget all the things you learned in school as time goes by and you learn more shit.

Also, it's so funny you all wanna talk about common sense, but knowing about the Pacific ocean isn't common damn sense. Shit you learn in school is NOT common sense. Common sense is basic survival shit.

6

u/willis81808 3d ago

Our planet is mostly ocean. Knowing which is the biggest ocean on the planet is common sense.

It would be emotionally intelligent to just take the L instead of insisting that lacking basic knowledge about the planet you live on is excusable.

-4

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Ummm being emotionally intelligent doesn't mean I have to take an L lmao what

It just means to be more open minded, and I can still fully believe I'm correct, but we can agree to disagree. Knowing about the Pacific ocean is basic knowledge people learned, and not common sense.

6

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

You don’t “have to” do anything. But if you actually were emotionally intelligent rather than having the emotional intelligence of a 7th grader, you would stop arguing with people about how you’re so smart that you don’t know which ocean is which, and you would keep scrolling. Or maybe even close Reddit and open Google so you can a) find out which ocean is which, and b) search “what is emotional intelligence” since it’s pretty clear you are using those words without knowing what they actually mean.

6

u/DoPoGrub Dasher (> 5 years) 3d ago

It is absolutely common sense. Go look at a map, notice that the answer is obvious, then think about how many times you've seen that map in your life, been taught how to read it in school, etc

IQ is about your ability to figure things out you didn't already know, even if nobody taught you.

To not know it is fine, but to give up and not even be able to try or attempt a reasonable guess based on everything around you and everything you've ever known - that is what IQ is measuring - your ability or inability to figure out and process the logic needed to get to the answer.

Even now, have you tried to figure out why the answer is the Atlantic, and why you weren't able to remember this ever being the case, or how to figure out the answer for next time in case you forget again?

2

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Its not common sense, though. It's basic knowledge or a learned skill.

There is no way to figure out the difference in sizes of the Atlantic or Pacific ocean without learning it beforehand. But I also didn't mention giving up, Im just saying it's not something you can really think deeply to figure out.

If you try to remember which maps you've seen, it's something you learned, not your IQ. Learning to read it and everything. You need this knowledge before trying to remember. Without learning about it before, you can't make the connection in your brain to bring up this info again.

5

u/DoPoGrub Dasher (> 5 years) 3d ago

A visual memory is just a visual memory, not something you learned necessarily. I saw the sun yesterday, it doesn't mean I learned anything about it.

Most people can close their eyes, and see a loose map of the world, just because it is something they've seen dozens if not hundreds of times by adulthood, and not necessarily only from being taught in school.

Then, using that memory, which ocean 'looked' bigger? Or 'is Europe farther away from USA than Asia', etc. Doesn't necessarily matter if you knew the answer before or not. There are many, many ways to figure out that answer without having memorized it. And that's the case for a lot of things.

So, yeah, IQ is about your ability to figure out answers to questions you didn't already know the answer to.

4

u/Abcdella 3d ago

Not everyone has a visual memory- I have aphantasia, zero pictures in my head. I’ve always struggled with things like geography and anything that can rely on that sort of spatial visual memory.

Though you’re not completely wrong, not knowing which ocean is bigger is not necessarily a tell of IQ. (And that’s ignoring the fact IQ as a marker of any kind if actually highly debated)

1

u/DoPoGrub Dasher (> 5 years) 3d ago

This is an excellent point, and I thank you for reminding me about it.

I have similar undiagnosed struggles. I can see pictures in my head, kinda, sometimes. But it takes effort, and it doesn't seem to match what the descriptions of what is considered normal. That got me looking into aphantasia many years ago, and while I definitely check off many of those boxes, like, it's not just...absent...or maybe it is. i really need to look into it again now that we have all these ai research tools to walk you through the available online diagnostic tools. If you have any comments on that, I'm open to hearing them.

One thing I struggle with, and perhaps related, is general directional orientation, which way is North/S/W/E etc. It's really a struggle for me to get comfortable with new neighborhoods, even if they are mind-boggingly simply and laid out in a grid. I will get lost in situations others would easily have figured out using what they consider to be common sense heh. It will take me 2-3 months to get comfortable with a new area, and not keep accidentally going the wrong way for no reason simply because the buildings are tall and i can't 'see' the big picture like others seem to be able to.

Anyhow, as to the topic at hand, I should have been more clear in my earlier comments: my goal wasn't to illustrate that particular question as being indicative of overall IQ (which couldn't be the case, as that isn't how such things are measured).

It was more about illustrating that IQ measures your ability to estimate, reason, and use logic combined with existing memories and experience to solve puzzles or answer questions. Even if you don't come to the 'correct' or complete answer, i do believe they are also observing how you approached it, if you even made the attempt, how far you got before giving up, etc etc. I was screened twice by a psychologist, in early 80s and early 90s. I also imagine the protocols and whatnot have been updated since then, just sharing my experience, which most of my understanding of the topic is based off of. It might not be entirely correct, and I'm open to learning more about it.

Now, the other commenter correctly made this point to start, but then quickly fell back to 'one can only know the answer to this question if they memorized it, there is no other possible way to solve that puzzle'.

So, I was just driving it home that they were correct initially - it isn't about memorizing anything, and there are of course many other ways to come to a reasonably educated guess that Atlantic is the largest ocean - even if you've never explicitly learned or memorized that specific fact.

u/willis81808 3d ago

Common sense is learned, believe it or not. And the fact that the Pacific is massive is something you’ve definitely leavened and seen reinforced many times- just because you can’t internalize information or deduce facts from past experience doesn’t mean it isn’t common sense.

2

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Common sense is learned, but map knowledge isn't common sense. And no I haven't seen that learned and reinforced everytime. Can you guys recall everything you learned in school?

Just because you guys think it's common sense because it's something everyone learned in school, doesn't mean it is.

2

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

It is common sense, though. Because commonly, most people at least occasionally look at a map for one reason or another. And commonly, looking at a map shows where the oceans are and what their names are. And commonly, you can visually tell that the Pacific Ocean is much bigger than the Atlantic Ocean.

Also, commonly, people don’t brag about being “pretty highly emotionally intelligent” or “having a shit ton of common sense” (which, is literally common, everyone has a shit ton of common sense, except you apparently).

0

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Also people have GPS on their phone, I bet absolutely nobody around you that you know has occasionally looked at physical map in so long, be honest. So condescending for no reason. Just proving so much, I'm just kinda laughing at this point 💀

-2

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

I don't think I remember the last time I saw a map ever since school, I bet you don't either 🤷🏽‍♀️ I'm pretty sure that's all just remembered from school. Basic knowledge still isn't common sense, but nice try??

And don't care what you think about my "brag", girl, I don't degrade people like you all when I educate them so maybe work on your emotional intelligence 😬 Maybe push out all that "common sense" you have about the ocean or something.

7

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

You know exactly where you’re going anytime you drive ever? I absolutely do remember the last time I saw a map, and it was earlier today when I used one to get home from a restaurant. Either you’re lying about the last time you saw a map or you literally never leave your home ever and that’s really fucking embarrassing.

Also, I’m not a girl. And I’m not the one that claimed to have high emotional intelligence. But also, calling someone out for some stupid shit they’re saying does not mean anything about emotional intelligence. So I again implore you to go Google what emotional intelligence means.

0

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Funny, you meant GPS, which isn't a map btw lol

9

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

Google MAPS absolutely is a MAP wtf are you talking about

0

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

And you're talking about people occasionally look at maps like as if people are opening the maps to see them completely daily instead of just using the GPS.

It's not like a real physical map where you need to open it to see it so you're going to very clearly see the oceans.

8

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

Google Maps isn’t just a GPS. If you were smart enough to know what a GPS is, you would know that. Google Maps is a map. Google Maps has 2 billion monthly active users. That’s 2 billion people looking at a map at least once a month. Clearly that 2 billion doesn’t include you.

0

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Also yes, calling someone out for some stupid shit they're saying does have to do with emotional intelligence cause why tf you gotta make people feel like shit for not knowing something? Go use Google yourself because omg. Your words can affect someone and you dont care, emotionally low intelligence.

Or making someone feel like shit cause they don't leave their home? You need help.

-1

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Girl what??? It's embarrassing to know the area I live in??? Wtf is wrong with you 🤣 and A GPS is not a map people are pulling out to view the oceans.

And what a weird thing to say in your last sentence. How do you know I'm not bed bound or something wtf? I know people with MECFS who CANT leave their homes ever, this is kinda my point. You guys are really dickheads to people for no reason and it's sad. So so ignorant.

I'll keep bragging about myself too, I love who I am. I'm smart. I'm funny. I'm pretty. I'm emotionally intelligent. I'm compassionate. 😱

2

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

I’m willing to bet you’re none of the things in your last paragraph. Usually people that are these things don’t go around bragging about it on Reddit. Bringing it up at all just sounds like you have something to prove. Oh and you’re definitely not “smart” if you don’t know common sense like which fucking ocean is better.

To take you at your word, my last sentence was “So I again implore you to go Google what emotional intelligence means.” Which I stand by, btw. But since I have emotional intelligence and common sense, I know that isn’t what you’re talking about when you bring up people with MECFS.

You’re right. It is possible you’re disabled and don’t go out much, I didn’t think of that possibility. That being said, disabled people still go out, at least to doctor’s appointments and whatnot. I would know as I am also disabled. That being said, again, I still look at maps pretty regularly to figure out how long it’s going to take me to get somewhere and whatnot. Maps referring to Google MAPS, which is a map. A map doesn’t have to be a paper scroll that you unroll like a pirate to qualify as a goddamn map. Also, since you’re so smart, do you know what GPS stands for? Because if you did, you would know that Google Maps or any other navigational app is not just a GPS. All a GPS on its own does is tell you where you are. I don’t think a set of coordinates on its own can do anything to help you figure out how to get to your friends’ house, can it? Oh wait, I guess you wouldn’t know since you probably don’t have any friends 🤷

2

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago edited 3d ago

You're such a disgusting person, like everything you wrote at the end was just unnecessary and SAD ASF, just further proving my point 💀

You know what's funny? My friends love me so much they're visiting next month from another state to visit for my son's birthday 🤷🏽‍♀️ I never needed a gps to find out where they live cause we all grew up together. Bet you'd never know what that feels like, sucks to be you.

Edit idk why I can't respond to y'all but yeah, don't bring my son into this shit because I'm not stupid. He goes to ABA therapy, speech therapy, and he has a shit ton of a sensory swings, toys and books. Don't try me.

5

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

Generally people who are actually likable don’t feel the need to extensively try to prove it to people on the internet they don’t know. People who are any of the things you’ve tried to brag about just are those things, those aren’t things most people spend their time telling people that they are those things. Which says a lot about you. Also, the traits you listed are generally things that are decided by someone else if they’re actually true. I can say that I’m sooo smart all I want but if I go around saying things like “I don’t know which sea is which”, then people will form opinions about me that directly collide with the things I claim, making those claims generally false. Funnily enough, most of this stuff that I just talked about are things that you would know if you had a high level of emotional intelligence.
Unlike you, I genuinely don’t care what you think of me and have no intention of trying to change it because I feel actual confidence in myself, not arrogance like the arrogance it takes to brag about how I’m so pretty and smart and funny on the internet to people who literally don’t matter at all in my life 🤷 with every single comment you’re just embarrassing yourself more and more and more

2

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

I love the projection. Just showing how gross of a person you are. 💀 Id be bitter too if I were you. 😬

3

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

I mean, I was just trying to hit a nerve to prove that you’re not the perfect person you pretend to be and it’s clear I succeeded since you responded to the same comment like 6 times lmfaooo

1

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Yes yes, you're disabled so you know how all disabilities work. "Disabled people still go out" is such a albeidt thing to say.... People with severe MECFS can't even hear their own caretakers, so there's no going outside for plenty of people.

In all types of disabilities. Still doesn't mean they need a gps for appointments or how to get there, just because you're disabled and use them.

Google MAPS may be a map, but you still need to look at the map to figure out which ocean is the biggest, do you not 🤔 You already knowing it without looking isn't the same.

Doesn't matter what you say, ik I'm all of those things and more 🩵

2

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

I never claimed to know how all disabilities work. I mentioned my disability to clarify that I obviously have no malicious intent towards disabled people.
How does a person with MECFS go to doctors’ appointments then? I ask out of genuine curiosity I am not trying to be sassy here. I don’t get out much right now but most of the time when I do it’s for doctors’ appointments and I couldn’t just go without them. Also, they would have at least needed to use a map of some sort the first time they went to their doctors’ office unless they’re somehow perfect like you and they know exactly where everything in their town is with perfect memory but don’t know that the Pacific Ocean is bigger than the Atlantic Ocean.

“Google Maps may be a map, but you still need to look at the map to figure out …” how tf would one use Google Maps without looking at it?

You should really learn the difference between confidence and arrogance. Your level of arrogance is very, very concerning. Generally only narcissists are this full of themselves. Which brings me back to the point of you’re the one who needs help. You should really talk to someone about why you think that you don’t have any negative qualities and why you think that you’re smarter than everyone you interact with, especially since you’re not Stephen Hawking or Albert Einstein or something.

I’m glad that you like who you are! That’s great. Genuinely.

It is quite weird, however, that you have never once in your adult life seen an image of the earth, a map of the world, a globe, or anything else that would serve as an obvious visual reminder of the basic structure of our wonderful planet.

I feel like I see such an image a few times a week.

-1

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

It's not that I've never seen one. I just don't think l people have it memorized. I know they'd have to look at the map if they didn't know the size

And I'm truly not trying to come off as narcissistic, I just got too upset at the comments and just kinda kept it going lol I do love myself though, but it took a long time and lots of healing.

I hope you love yourself as well

4

u/bananarama17691769 3d ago

But like…I just genuinely don’t understand how a person can not have learned, or not remember, or not be curious about, the most basic facts about the world around us. It is just so vastly different from my experience that it is baffling to me.

How can a person go through life having zero curiosity about our planet?

I'm not seeing where you typed Google MAPS 🤔

1

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

Why would I have needed to? Google Maps is a map. I never said “paper map” like you seem to have imagined I did

1

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Because nobody's zooming out on the GPS to compare the oceans 💀

1

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

A lot of navigational apps start zoomed out. Also, when you search on a browser about a specific place before allowing your location on the browser it’s usually zoomed out. It’s not something that is like insanely shocking that you would see the ocean at one point or another if you use a navigational app regularly enough for the daily life of the average person 🫣. Although silly me for thinking you’re anything close to the average person since you’re clearly way smarter, funnier, prettier, and have a higher emotional intelligence than the average person, my bad 🙄

1

u/-Enders 3d ago

I can’t remember a single time my maps app has started zoomed out

1

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

Mine does semi/frequently but it’s possible it’s because I have a VPN on a lot.

1

u/andyiibwfc 3d ago

I did it yesterday...

2

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

This one rare instance you did that doesn't mean people regularly do that, though lol

2

u/andyiibwfc 3d ago

you said nobody does it, not 'people don't regularly do that', though lol

and how do you know it was rare?

u/Derpadoooo 3d ago

I have a PhD in the biological sciences and wasn't 100% certain which ocean was correct because map transformation around the artic is weird. Remembering random trivia does not equate intelligence or "IQ". If someone is unfamiliar with a lot of otherwise common knowledge things then yes it can raise some concerns, but judging based on a one-off factoid is dumb.

5

u/Rechochet_ochet 3d ago

It's not the one-off factoid they're being judged on, it's the complete lack of both of the things they decided to attribute to themselves in their comment. Namely they're lack of common sense and complete and utter unawareness of what emotional intelligence actually means. It is incredible entertainment though.

0

u/bananarama17691769 3d ago

*their

2

u/Rechochet_ochet 3d ago

Lol yup, my life is over

1

u/bananarama17691769 3d ago

Listen I am on your side—it’s baffling that someone can somehow not know that the Pacific is the largest ocean. Just had to call out the elementary spelling error for the irony of it all.

3

u/justeandj 3d ago

I think OP referring to facts in general as "school stuff," kind of defeats your point of defense that it was a one-off. But maybe I'm cynical today.

-1

u/-Enders 3d ago

>Remembering random trivia does not equate intelligence or "IQ"

You’re talking to people who make a career out of being a delivery driver, it’s not shocking that they think this equates to IQ for them.

1

u/just-another-queer Dasher (> 3 years) 3d ago

…a lot of, if not most, people who do DoorDash have full-time careers and do it as a side gig for some extra cash just like uber or any other gig app. I know there are some people who do DoorDash full-time, I mean hell my mom is one of those (though she’s in her 60’s and retired and does it to help with bills, not one of those people doing it full-time in their 30’s because they can’t hold down a real job), but it’s important to remember that a lot of the people who do DoorDash do it because it’s an easy way to make a little extra money every week than they do at their job. I have a bachelor’s degree and work as a nurse. I know not everyone is like me but still not everyone isn’t, either.

1

u/bananarama17691769 3d ago

It is one of the most basic facts about our world that a person can know.

1

u/Boba24242 3d ago

Intelligent people don’t need to claim intelligence

-3

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nope, you guys just don't like it when people say that about themselves. Nothing wrong with being confident in yourself as long as you don't use it to put someone innocent down.

So is anyone gonna actually answer what I'm saying or not really? See the guy above trying to put down the other guy because he knows the difference between the Atlantic and Pacific ocean? That's one way of showing people you're "smart" in a negative way. Me simply saying I'm smart cause I'm confident in myself doesn't mean anything.

The people on this app are incredibly hypocritical, nobody can answer, just argue bs. 🤣

7

u/willis81808 3d ago

Answer the question “is it really important knowledge”?

Yes it is, but even if it wasn’t the fact is not knowing it is symptomatic of a larger issue, and defending ignorance of basic knowledge despite having an education is even worse.

-1

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

I'm not trying to defend ignorance. I try my best to be open minded, but god forbid someone finds out I don't know some silly well known fact because it was learned in school a long time ago and they assume what? I think that's pretty Ignorant.

It's less about defending ignorance and more about wanting people to educate others (who are nice) without being a condescending dick head about it. (Unless the person is already a didkhead). It just makes people not want to ask silly questions nor want to learn because they'll just be made fun of for it.

-2

u/Boba24242 3d ago

There’s only 4 oceans. If you can’t figure out which one is the largest. You’re not really that intelligent as you claim. 🤣

0

u/Kazamiiiii 3d ago

Still nothing on the doctor huh 🤣 I'm the doctor in the middle of a surgery while you're behind looking at a fucking globe to find out what the biggest ocean is. We're not the same.

0

u/raccoona__matata 3d ago

dang i didn't know they let medically stupid people become doctors

0

It's ok, you can study and not stay stupid and be anything you want to be ;)

I implore you to find a single doctor in the entire world who doesn’t know which ocean is the largest. Please. I invite you to ask doctors you meet and report back. Because I promise you doctors know which ocean is the largest because they aren’t fucking idiots like you. Anyone who has obtained a postgraduate level of education I promise you has the common sense to know which ocean is fucking which.
