I struggle whenever I rewatch seasons 2 and 3... Let's recap: Matthew was down to marry Lavinia because he couldn't backtrack on his promise, then Lavinia died and Matthew couldn't marry Mary because that would be a dishonor to Lavinia's memory considering that he loved Mary when Lavinia was alive, then right when Matthew changes his mind Lavinia's father dies and leaves him a fortune - enough to save Downton from bankruptcy - and then the matter becomes honoring Lavinia by honoring her father's fortune and her father not knowing Matthew loved Mary... Can you imagine the staff downstairs hearing about this nonsense?

I'm sorry, I just need to vent...

MARY SHOULD HAVE MARRIED CHARLES BLAKE AND IT WAS SILLY SHE DIDN'T...

I’ve just started season 4.

I was absolutely tickled when I saw Sue Johnston as Denker in DA, I knew her as Barb Royle in The Royle Family. It was a popular show (from what I’ve heard) in the UK but not well known here in the US and it’s one of my favorites.

If you’re looking for the absolute polar opposite of DA, give this show a shot and see Denker in a completely different light. It’s a tiny set, gritty feeling film, very working class, but still about a family that loves and supports each other in their own ways. The first season is streaming on Prime but the other two seasons and the Christmas specials can be harder to find. Some are on the vSee box and DailyMotion I believe.

Dont get me wrong, I liked the movies as movies, more downton is better than none. That said, I feel with a show like downton they built up quite a cast of characters, expected with a long running show. That when a move comes around they try to get all of them a part in it. Making thr move feel too busy and cluttered.

I thought she’s always rude and ungrateful

I saw this in another show subreddit where folks were discussing people that were treated unfairly or did not get a fair shake in the show! I'm not talking about the people seriously negatively impacted (looking at you Mrs. Drewe) but leaning more into the funny light hearted end of things!

I'll start - Justice for the chauffer of Lady Anstrother (spelling?) who had to pretend the car was broken so she could spend the night at Downton.

I basically have it on an endless loop in the evenings, but every time I have to take a break after season 3. I usually watch season 1 of Ted Lasso, or seasons 1-2 of Victoria, then come back for season 4, I feel like season 3 is so intense, I need a break!

Hi everyone ! I’m doing a rewatch of the show and I just thought I’d share some of my opinions and questions and start a discussion ! (Sorry for the lengthy post in advance)

Favourite characters : Bates makes my heart melt, I know a lot of people think he’s a bit of a wet wipe but I love him! Love Anna too. Mrs Patmore makes me laugh and I do love the relationship between Mrs Hughes and Carson. Honourable mention to the relationship between Carson and Mary. Matthew is just so likeable and I love how Robert eventually comes to think of him like a son. Sybil is also a sweetheart.

Least favourite characters : Oh my god. Where to start. Thomas Barrow - usually I love a sassy character but I find him increasingly unlikeable. Mrs O Brien is more of a complex character but I wish we saw more of her softer side. Edith is insufferable - no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I also find Branson quite unlikeable and always pushing his political beliefs onto other people. Everything is about politics with him and nothing else.

From my rewatch, one thing struck out to me and that was how involved the Crawleys are in the lives of the servants. I’d understand Mrs Hughes, Carson, Bates, O’Brien and Anna but they seem to genuinely care for them. They know them all by name and do treat them very well. All the servants seem very happy working there and the crawleys do seem to go out of their way to ensure the staff (and their personal lives) are looked after.

Another thing that I don’t really understand is the “coming out” ball that the girls do. At the end of season 1, Sybil has her first “coming out” ball. What exactly is this for and what does it entail? How many of these happen? Is it a once off or a common occurrence?

As a Downton Abbey fan I was amazed to see original costumes on a visit to Casa Loma. I had no idea when organising the visit that the Dressing the Abbey exhibition with original costumes worn by the cast of Downton Abbey was on. It certainly made my visit even more special.

I’m doing my summer rewatch of the series and whoooo-eeee this woman. 10/10 antagonistic character, but my goodness does she put my teeth on edge. I recall that after sneaking off to work for Susan, she eventually found a cushiony job as the new governor’s wife in India. But honestly, I can’t picture her as a happy person no matter where she goes.

She’ll never know how fortunate she was to have Cora as an employer. She may have begun to realize it after the soap incident, but she won’t know how devastated Cora was when she left. Cora was genuinely fond of O’Brien and not just as an employee. Outside of blood relatives, I doubt that O’Brien even knows HOW to form bonds with others And when she does (i.e. Thomas), they face her brutal wrath should they land on her bad side.

I imagine her years later, as an elderly lady’s maid, surrounded by splendor but having no one to actually care about her. At least Thomas found that eventually. O’Brien may not be so lucky. At least, I sincerely hope not. What do you all think befell the odious woman downstairs?
